Dog lover or not, how can you resist Cadbury the chocolate Labrador’s sweet face on this week’s cover?! About 62% of Australian households own a pet – dogs being the most common (38%) – so I thought it was high time we gave the people what they wanted: an edition dedicated to pets. This week’s magazine was inspired by local Year 3 student Poppy, whose class I visited last term to talk about Newcastle Weekly. Among some rather comical questions (“Are you on YouTube?” and “Do you have to work on your birthday?”), were a few helpful suggestions. Poppy (an animal lover) politely pointed out that Newcastle Weekly contained not nearly enough critter content. Given the opportunity to work at a magazine when she grows up, Poppy thought she might like to write a regular animal care column. Anywho, perhaps I should listen to my fans more often? You tell me. news Fires devastate habitat Chad Beranek wants better education and a greater police presence on Kooragang Island, Hexham, after a deliberately-lit fire tore through more than 100 hectares and destroyed wildlife. The University of Newcastle student has studied the effect of habitat restoration on a threatened species – the Green and Golden Bell Frog – on the island as part of his PhD for the past three years. He says there’s been a significant increase in fires, particularly car burnings, during that time. “In my first season, I probably only saw one or two burnt out cars but, just in the last few months, since August, I’ve recorded eight,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “Where the [latest] fire occurred, it swept through a whole bunch of habitats, which are used as a corridor for the endangered Green

and Golden Bell Frog. “That is particularly worrying because fragments of the population on the island and the population [in general] are at a high risk of extinction.” Mr Beranek says firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the blaze, only for it to reignite in hot conditions and spread to areas inhabited by snakes, lizards, eastern long-necked turtles, sheoak skinks, and birds. He believes hundreds of animals may have died in the fire. “We’ve so far found one bell frog, which has died due to the fire, and it’s probably likely that there’s a lot more,” he says. “We found the bell frog under a tyre that was in quite deep, burnt-out vegetation, so there is no easy way you can survey all of this charcoal for frogs.”

Mr Beranek hopes there will be more awareness on the devastating impact that a minority has caused to a susceptible ecosystem. He wants to see the persistent perpetrators caught and a serious investigation under way. “There could perhaps be more

of a police presence on the island and maybe gating off certain areas where there’s more activity would be an option,” he says. “But, obviously there are other stakeholders involved that might not like the idea.” - Ben Murphy

Safety first as light rail nears From running red lights to jaywalking across tram tracks: drivers and pedestrians have been urged to use more caution around the Newcastle Light Rail. With the new system set to open to the public next month, Newcastle Transport Light Rail driver Corey Moore said he and other drivers had encountered some careless and reckless behaviour since daytime testing started in November.

“It makes sense that people need some time to adjust to the new conditions, however, our drivers are seeing some repeated dangerous behaviours, which are putting people at risk,” he said. “One of the most common issues we’ve seen is drivers running red lights at the light rail crossings, particularly at Stewart Avenue. “Another regular sight is pedestrians jaywalking across

the tram tracks, often not paying attention and looking at their phones.” Newcastle Transport operators, Keolis Downer, released a list of the top five safety issues last week ahead of the system’s official opening. The list included running red lights at rail crossings, vehicles queuing over tracks at crossings, pedestrians jaywalking, using the tramway for walking, running and cycling, and vehicles performing illegal U-turns over light rail tracks. Keolis Downer Hunter general manager, Mark Dunlop, said following the road rules and being aware around Newcastle Light Rail would not just keep people safe, but help the system operate to its potential. “We’re asking the community to not let some of the recent issues we’ve seen turn into long-term habits that will put people at risk and be a detriment to the service,” he said.

Police station set for upgrade A new $1.5 million police station is promised for Lemon Tree Passage. Funding will be rolled out over three years, with consultation already under way and community engagement expected to take place in the coming months. The planned upgrade was announced on Monday morning. The state government stated the current site at Lemon Tree Passage did not allow for the expansion and modernisation of the existing facility. “I can assure the community that we will continue to ensure our men and women in blue are properly resourced to continue their work,” NSW Police Minister, Troy Grant, said. Other police stations to undergo an upgrade in the region include Tea Gardens and Karuah.

news Club drives school donations A Hunter-based club has completed another successful back-to-school drive to support women’s refuges across the region as the summer holidays quickly disappear in the rear-view mirror. Backpacks, stationery items and lunchboxes are often on many families’ shopping lists, but not everyone can afford such essentials. This is where the Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle chips in. The organisation works to empower women and girls through service and advocacy, both locally and internationally. Each December, its back-toschool drive is a vital part of the club’s activities. Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle president, Karen Wilson, says the 2018-19 collection has been a great success, providing enough backpacks, stationery, lunchboxes,

drink bottles and other items to service all six women’s refuge centres across Newcastle, Maitland and Lake Macquarie. “When women and children flee domestic violence situations and seek refuge in these valued facilities, they often arrive with not [much] more than the clothes they are wearing,” she says. “This creates extreme difficulty for the children returning to school in January.” Apart from the back-to-school drive, the club collects nonperishable food and linen, while it also creates amenities bags that contain toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, and more. The club has a strong membership of professional women and undertakes projects across many sectors, including the assembly of birthing kits, breast

Plan to grow live music More opportunities to break into the all-age music industry, improvements to night-time transport and online promotion are part of Newcastle council’s live-music strategy. The Live Music Strategy 2019-23, which is on public exhibition until 25 February, has set out key targets to achieve a safe and sustainable live music scene. “Live music is an invaluable part of our city’s cultural make-up, and we’ve undertaken a significant body of research and community engagement to develop an action

plan that will help grow this important industry in Newcastle,” lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said. “This document, together with other important strategies, such as the After Dark Strategy, seeks to strengthen our night time economy by making live music as viable for musicians and their audiences as possible.” Cr Nelmes said the plan also aimed to strike a balance between promoting a vibrant night-time economy and responding to the needs of those calling the city home.

The University of Newcastle is one of 19 major employers to have agreed to a limited waiver of non-disclosure agreements for the National Workplace Sexual Harassment Inquiry. In November, Australian Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Kate Jenkins, called on Australian employers to make a partial waiver of Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) so parties to NDAs were able to make confidential submissions to the national inquiry.

Inclusive events that range from bellydancing and theatre workshops to croquet and healthy cooking classes will be on offer in Lake Macquarie during this year’s Me2 program. Launched in 2017, the program aims to build the networks and skills of people of all abilities and ages. “Me2 aims to be a meaningful addition to the lives of participants, to support them and include them in our community,” Lake Macquarie council’s ageing and disability officer, Peta McGrath, said. More than 11,500 people in Lake

Macquarie – comprising over 6% of the population – need assistance with self-care, mobility or communication. Ms McGrath said that was above the NSW average. “Thankfully, attitudes and behaviour towards people with disability have changed significantly in recent years, and programs like Me2 help continue this positive trend,” she said. The first few months will include healthy cooking classes in February, croquet in March, an Easter picnic in April, and bellydancing and drumming classes in May.

A new mural at a Cameron Park aged care facility has coloured the residents’ world. Former signwriter and TAFE art teacher of 18 years, Allan Baxter, painted a picture of a parrot and toucan nestled amongst flowers and ferns to help disguise a door separating two wards, where residents often congregate, at Opal

Macquarie Place. The retired Speers Point man was visiting his friend, Michael Costello, in the dementia ward one day when he struck up a conversation with one of the nurses, who suggested a mural could help pleasantly distract residents. He jumped at the chance to dust off his painting skills, whilst also

spending quality time with Michael, with whom he used to play in an acoustic band called Alive ‘n’ Kickin, alongside other men over 60 who had all survived cancer or heart surgery. “[Michael] doesn’t know me anymore, but the important thing is, I know him,” Allan said. “While I was there, he got to know me as the new Allan – the mural painter – and that’s one of the reasons I did it.” Allan painted each Thursday over the course of three weeks, for a total of 20 hours’ free labour. Inspirations Paint Warners Bay donated the materials. “I feel great [about the project] because I’ve been going to aged care homes and playing music but this was totally different to what I’d been doing,” he said. - Georgia Osland

Hunter land values rise Hunter land values have risen across the board to 1 July 2018, the Acting NSW Valuer General’s report shows. Residential land value increases varied from slight, in Singleton and the Upper Hunter, to strong on the Mid Coast and the Central Coast. Moderate increases of between 6% and 10% were recorded in the Upper Hunter, Port Stephens, Newcastle, Singleton and Cessnock. The Muswellbrook local government area was the only one that recorded steady residential values (0.4%). Revenue NSW uses these figures – which only reflect the value of the land, not a home or other structure – to calculate land tax for registered land tax clients. Property sales are the most influential factor on land values.

news Camping trial to test the waters at Stockton Beach When Novocastrians and visitors step onto Stockton Beach, they stand on the “Worimi equivalent of Uluru”. Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council (WLALC) chief executive, Andrew Smith, said a camping trial at the southern end of the 4,200-hectare Worimi Conservation Lands would be closely monitored. Camping on the beach was banned in 2012 after a series of major storms caused significant damage to the dune system. More than 1,500 campers once flocked to the landscape each day, resulting in about 10 tonnes of rubbish being collected annually. From next month, an initial 15 remote campsites will be opened as part of the Ganyamalbaa Camping Trial. Ganyamalbaa means ‘a place to camp’ in Gathang language, spoken by the Worimi. Mr Smith said the Worimi people had heard the community’s call for camping to return. “There are limitations with what we can and can’t provide, but we’ve come up with what we think is the best possible option and hope with

all our heart that it will work,” he told Newcastle Weekly. The unique camping experience has been co-designed by the Worimi Conservation Lands (WCL) Board of Management, as well as four-wheel-drive, fishing and conservation representatives. The WCL is managed by a board of 13 people, eight of whom are registered Worimi Aboriginal owners, in accordance with the National Parks and Wildlife Service Act 1974. The park aims to protect the natural and cultural values of the Stockton Bight landscape, while also providing public access and promoting safe and sustainable recreational and commercial use. Online bookings for the trial will open on Friday 1 February, with camping to start two weeks later. Fees are $33 (base site fee, two adults); $16.50 (extra adult); $8 (child, 5-12); and free for infants aged 0-4. Beach permit fees also changed on New Year’s Day for four-wheel-drive and recreational vehicle

The disease can be highly debilitating for those who gain minimal relief from conventional inhaled therapies, escalating chronic risk factors associated with physical inactivity. As a natural, non-pharmaceutical approach, the new study, called NAMASTE (Novel Activity

Management in severe ASthma – Tailored Exercise) aims to increase the amount of activity that asthma sufferers can tolerate. The team has started recruitment for a clinical trial that will compare 16 weeks of yoga and mindfulness classes with a minimal, telephone-based, goal-setting control group. The military sabre is on public display at Speers Point Library.

Sabre a reminder of lake’s history A rare, 200-year-old military sabre that once belonged to one of the pioneers of European settlement in Lake Macquarie has gone on public display for the first time. The Pattern 1796 light cavalry sabre was once owned by Jonathan Warner, after whom Warners Bay was named. Mr Warner fought the French as a British officer in the Napoleonic Wars – where he likely obtained and used the sabre – before emigrating

to Australia in 1826. He settled several years later in what is now known as Warners Bay, establishing a farm and orange orchard on the hill above the presentday Warners Bay Public School. Lake Macquarie City Council Community Historian, Ann Crump, said the Pattern 1796 sabre was one of the most fearsome battlefield weapons of its time. “It was designed to be a slashing weapon

and is recognised as one of the deadliest cutting swords ever manufactured in large quantities,” Ms Crump said. Warner died in 1843, aged 57, but the sabre was passed down to his granddaughter, Rosa Ellen Warner. It sat for decades wrapped in calico on top of a cupboard on a property in Tamworth. Ms Crump said the relatively dry environment during that period helped preserve the weapon. Its original scabbard is also largely intact. “Warner is a significant character in the history of European settlement in Lake Macquarie, yet very few artefacts relating to him remain,” Ms Crump said. “That makes this sabre such an important heritage item.” A descendant of Warner, Margaret Brown, kindly donated the sabre and other family items to Lake Macquarie council last year. The sabre, an epaulette worn by Warner as part of his military uniform, letters he wrote during his time in Lake Macquarie, and a historical photo of Warner’s home, known as Biddaba, are on display until March at Speers Point Library.

Season launch to dazzle Cessnock Performing Arts Centre will launch its 2019 season in spectacular style with The Maestro and the Diva on Saturday 9 February. Brian Castles-Onion, opera conductor, pianist and famous Cessnock son; and Geraldine Turner, musical theatre star, will take the stage in this celebration of composers, from Porter to Gershwin, Sondheim to Weill, Berlin to Lloyd Webber. Expect to laugh and be enthralled, surprised, even touched, by the talents and tales of these two celebrated Australian artists. They will reflect and reminisce, regaling the audience with stories from behind and in front of the lights. Both are multi-award winners and true legends of the stage, and together they shine brightly. Guests will be treated to a pre-show stroll down the red carpet, where the paparazzi will greet them, followed by canapés and sparkling wine. The Maestro and the Diva kicks off what promises to be a full-throttle performing arts season, packed with epic confessions, hilariously mad entanglements, outrageous comedy, stunning music and beautiful consequences. Patrons can expect some big names to cross

the stage this year, with many of the country’s premier artists and companies touring regionally. Among them will be Australian tenor and soprano powerhouses, David Hobson and Marina Prior, together on stage for The 2 of Us – Up Close and Personal. Jonathan Biggins will also perform as Paul Keating (The Gospel According to Paul), while The Sapphires present a funny, heartwarming tale about four young Yorta Yorta women, who sing Motown soul hits and find themselves in the hell that is the Vietnam War. Run away with the circus Webers Circus With a Touch of the Wild West is fi lled with wonderful acts from around the world that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The other feature act is the Russian Swing, with the three Weber sisters somersaulting through the air, only to be caught by a catcher seven metres off the ground. Keeping pets safe According to RSPCA NSW, more pets go missing during storms and fireworks than at any other time. There are many reasons our pets might become anxious during a storm, including the fear of loud noises, especially given that a dog can hear 10 times better than we can. Pets often injure themselves trying to escape the noise: some dogs will jump over or dig under fences, while others find their way onto busy roads and can be struck by vehicles. If possible, it’s best to stay home with your pet, particularly if they are prone to panic. Provide a comfortable area or den they can retreat to and engage them in normal activities. If you know a storm is coming, or fireworks are planned, ensure your pets are exercised and well fed before the noise starts. It’s a good idea also to ensure your pet’s microchip details are up-to-date and they are wearing an ID tag. PETstock vet Dr Hay In Chung says some dogs are predisposed to a fear of loud noises. “[This] most often occurs in breeds that are genetically more sensitive to all noises (e.g. Border Collies), or dogs that perhaps weren’t exposed to loud noises when young and had a bad experience during their first time exposed to thunder,” Dr Hay says. 30

“Moreover, if a dog had a particularly bad experience with noise, then it may become sensitised to the noise, even if it was OK to begin with. “A consultation with your vet could provide light sedatives to relax your pet in stressful situations. Alternatively, crate training and even Thundershirts can help.” Thundershirts are anti-anxiety shirts that work by giving your cat or dog a ‘hug’ as they fit snugly while targeting various pressure points on the body. Yearly overview: July – December A great month for pruning – not spring-flowering trees and shrubs. Roses should be pruned this month (frost-prone areas can wait until August). Stone fruit that suffer from leaf curl should be sprayed with Copper Oxychloride during the last two weeks of July, then again during early August. Crepe Myrtles should be cut back to within several centimetres of last year’s growth – don’t prune back to the same spot as ugly calluses will appear.

August Fertilise citrus this month; only use slow-release on potted plants. Feed ground-grown plants with poultry manure, followed several weeks later with citrus food. Hydrangeas that have been pruned back to two plump eyes should be fertilised, giving consideration to colour. Once camellias have fi nished flowering, deadhead and trim to shape, fertilise and mulch with peat moss. Early tomatoes can be planted in well-manured soil. Eradicate weeds before lawns are fertilised.

My favourite things CYCLING A great passion of mine is cycle racing and training. Cycling helps me stay fit and feeds my competitive juices when I race and teaches me to suffer when the pace is on, which feels like high-altitude climbing.

TENTS I love sleeping in tents and, some years, spend over 100 nights in them in the wilderness or at many basecamps around the world. The secret to comfort is a good mattress and pillow, warm sleeping bag and lots of movies on the tablet.

Gavin Vickers

EXPEDITION LEADER & THE UMBRELLA FOUNDATION AUSTRALIA PATRON

Growing up in Cessnock, Gavin Vickers spent his childhood exploring an old, abandoned open cut coal mine that was bordered by a national park. Always active and loving the outdoors, he went to New Zealand to do a mountaineering course in the Southern Alps and then summited Mt Cook, which would be the first of many summits. From there, the mountains and goals got bigger, climbing the world’s sixth-highest peak, Cho Oyu, without oxygen, then leading an expedition to the summit of Mt Everest from the Tibet side in 2010. Gavin then led a successful expedition on the Nepal side of Everest and summited the fourth-highest peak, Lhotse, in 2011. Gavin has continued climbing despite some setbacks, which included falling after his rope broke in Pakistan and getting a lung infection last year on Makalu in Nepal. 54

Any time I spend in the mountains is a joy and, although it gets very hard physically, at times, it makes me feel alive and really value what a beautiful environment I am in, way above the tree line where the oxygen is thin and the terrain is difficult.

COFFEE I really enjoy my coffee any time, but it is a must first thing in the morning. I have many devices to make the perfect coffee, whether I am at home, travelling or at base camp. I seem to be very popular on each expedition.

GIVING BACK Nepal has become my second home and I got the chance to help by becoming the patron of The Umbrella Foundation Australia. We are building a school, educating children and providing funds and sewing machines to set up micro businesses for women in the villages.
