This week... From the editor Some of my favourite days of the year are nestled between that precious period from Christmas to New Year, where time is no object. Is it morning or afternoon? Tuesday or Saturday? Will you have fresh fruit for dinner or bickies and cheese? The world is your oyster. If, like me, you’re lucky enough to enjoy time off over the holidays, then you’ll know this tranquil state of mind all too well. It’s a time to release the shackles of the daily grind and truly recharge – no planning, no doing, no running around, just soaking up the present moment. Of course, not everyone is this lucky; some don’t get to take a break, and my sincere gratitude to those doctors, nurses, police, paramedics, hospitality and retail workers who keep our communities ticking while the rest of us switch off. Wishing all our readers and clients a safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Our magazine is only as strong as it is with your support, and we hope you join us again in 2019, for what should be another successful year of growth. news Skate bowl proposal “irresponsible” A proposal to build a skate bowl on South Newcastle Beach might help to put the city on the map, but surfer Bernie Wilson questions if it will be for the right reasons. Newcastle council has wrapped up its community drop-in sessions for the ambitious $11 million project, which aims to transform the public domain between Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club and King Edward Park. Key features include a wider shared pathway, new stairs and seating, a kiosk, exercise equipment and improved public amenities, as well as a new intermediate-level skate bowl and renewed skate park. However, community concern arose over a plan for the skate bowl and bleach stairs to protrude more than 20 metres into the active beach zone. Mr Wilson, who has surfed at South Newcastle since the 1980s, attended the final drop-in session at Adamstown last week. “[Council] is trying to gauge the community perception and vibe – they keep saying that it is just a concept,” he says. “It is great that they want to do up South

Newcastle Beach, but don’t put a skate bowl on the beach. “There’s an attitude of ‘Don’t worry about the environment, as long as it looks good,’ sort of thing. “The idea is that it’ll put Newcastle on the map, but will it be for all the wrong reasons? “All of the coastal experts I’ve been talking to say it’ll be a disaster.” Newcastle council stated in October that its coastal engineering report was prepared during the initial stages of design for South Newcastle Beach to determine the level of risk involved in placing infrastructure east of the seawall. It considered the impacts on sand and wave movement, compounding impacts of coastal processes on adjoining infrastructure, the maximum foreseeable water level, and wave impact forces. The council added the report used wave data collected over 25 years and included storm surge factors, tides, wave run-up and predicted sea-level rise in its assessment. Continued on page 17

news Think ahead, police urge Newcastle City Police District acting commander Steve Laksa has urged the Hunter community to think ahead as another busy festive period approaches. Acting commander Laksa says people have to consider the consequences of their actions. “Whether it’s jumping in a car or having an argument – [people] could end up getting hurt or in gaol,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “The biggest thing is for the community to ensure they are safe in terms of alcohol consumption when driving and in public spaces. “Road safety is very important; we found there were no great issues with the large crowd at the V8 Supercars [in November], everyone was well-behaved. “But we just want people to be cautious as there will be a lot of pedestrian traffic around at this

busy time of the year.” Double demerits will take place across NSW from Friday 21 December until Tuesday 1 January. The state government has introduced sweeping reforms this month as it targets a reduction in alcohol and drug-related accidents. Under the changes, an alcohol interlock program has been expanded to include all mid-range drink drivers. Offenders will be ordered to spend at least three months off the road and will have an interlock installed in their vehicles for a minimum of 12 months. An interlock is an electronic breath-testing device connected to the ignition of a vehicle, which prevents it from starting if alcohol is detected. Police will also have the power to seize number plates or a vehicle

on the spot from repeat or high-risk offenders. In a further crackdown, from mid-2019, any driver who commits a low-range drink driving offence will be hit with a $561 fine and lose their licence for three months. This penalty also applies to first-time drug presence offences detected via the roadside mobile drug testing (MDT) program. Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey, says the message to the community is

powerful. “[In 2017], 55 people lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes and 81 people died in crashes involving someone with illicit drugs in their system,” she says. “The 0.05 limit has been in place in NSW for almost 38 years. “It is about driving home to the community that there are no more excuses. “Have a Plan B. Because if you drink drive, you will be caught, and you will lose your licence.” - Ben Murphy

news Detailed study for Maitland

Farewell to flood historian He was a man on a mission when it came to stories on the 1955 flood and the need to be prepared. Well-known historian, Peter Bogan, has left a lasting legacy, with his guided Walk and Talk flood tours preserved on DVD and YouTube for future generations. Mr Bogan sadly passed away this month at the age of 82 after a short battle with cancer. His popular flood education tours were first developed in 2009, with five guided tours in the series, covering Horseshoe Bend, to the business district, courthouse precinct, and Oakhampton floodway. The tours were conducted 30 times over a seven-year period. In May 2018, the Maitland Flood History Walks were released on DVD. They included two tours, led by Mr Bogan, with one covering

Mount Pleasant Street and the Long Bridge precinct, and the other tracing around the Maitland Station precinct. $ Amanda Hyde, who worked alongside Mr Bogan on the flood education projects, tribute to Breastpaid Schnitzels his enthusiasm and generosity. “It was a privilege to work with you, my community volunteer at the Hunter-Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority and the NSW SES Hunter Region, for the past 10 years,” she said. “I’m so grateful to have worked with you to develop the five Walk and Talk flood tours that we took over 700 people on, a self-guided walking tour app, Memories Come Flooding Back DVD with 1955 flood survivors’ stories, the research for the Maitland flood book, and your appearance on SBS Insight as Maitland’s historic flood expert.

The state government has awarded Maitland council a $100,000 grant to help it construct a detailed study for a potential high-level evacuation route for Central Maitland and Lorn. “Our city has a unique relationship with the Hunter River and flooding, so this feasibility study is welcome news, particularly for residents in Central Maitland and Lorn,” Maitland mayor Loretta Baker said. “It will mean that our evacuation response to larger floods will be improved and that the serious risk to lives during severe flooding is lowered.” The state government committed to provide $1.8 million in 201819 to fund a number of projects, including the plans for Maitland council, as part of a Floodplain Grants Scheme.

news Sale hailed as win for tourism Newcastle council’s current administrative headquarters will be transformed into a luxury hotel known as the Kingsley. The distinctive ‘roundhouse’ building on King Street was purchased by Ghassan Aboud, a Syrian billionaire and owner of hospitality group Crystalbrook Collection. The five-star hotel will feature 136 luxury rooms, a lobby bar, café with outdoor terrace, and a new rooftop restaurant, swimming pool and gymnasium. Construction will start once council staff relocate to a new office on Stewart Avenue, Newcastle West. Crystalbrook Collection expects to be operational by November 2020. Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes believes the hotel will reinvent the Civic Precinct overnight. “Guests staying in the luxury hotel will now be within just 100 metres walk of the Civic Theatre, the Newcastle Art Gallery, the Newcastle Museum, and the Civic Playhouse,” she said.

“The existence of a five-star hotel, complete with a light rail station immediately across from it, will finally create the thriving cultural precinct our city has longed for. “[The sale] is also a win for tourism, the university’s inner-city expansion plans, and the neighbouring justice precinct and nearby Darby Street businesses.” The council announced in December 2017 it would move 400 administrative staff west in a one-off cost of $7 million. Chief executive Jeremy Bath claimed the decision compared favourably to a “poor $6 million investment should we choose to stay and update inefficient buildings with a combined age of over 140 years”. “After analysing the best way forward, it became clear that we needed to centralise and move to a new facility for the benefit of both ratepayers and staff,” he said at the time. Prior to the building’s sale, it was also suggested that the City Administration Centre (CAC) could make suitable student or academic accommodation, which would support the

Thank you and stay safe The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service has launched its holiday campaign, issuing a message of “Thank you and stay safe” to its supporters and the community. Reflecting on the year that was, chief executive officer Richard Jones said the holidays were a time to reflect, thank those who supported the service, contemplate its success and review opportunities. “The service is extremely grateful for the support received in 2018, and, with the year coming to an end and another about to begin, I would like to acknowledge our passionate team of people who contribute to keeping the helicopters flying,” he said. “To our volunteers, board of directors, Regional Advisory Committees, administration staff, engineers, pilots, aircrew officers,

Swimming and fishing spots throughout Lake Macquarie have received top marks in the first round of the council’s summer water quality monitoring program. Of the 14 sites tested, 12 received the highest four-star rating. The others – at Wangi Wangi and Sunshine – received three stars. While the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage has its own Beachwatch program, Lake Macquarie council’s monitoring covers areas not tested under the government’s regime. Results can be negatively affected by wet weather, particularly due to the lake’s enclosed nature, meaning there is limited natural dilution of stormwater. The council recommends people avoid swimming in the lake for at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall.

Rail trail momentum grows Billy Metcalfe is behind the push to convert a disused rail line into a shared pathway that will “feed the entire region”. But, first, the Richmond Vale Rail Trail committee president

patiently waits for “all the boxes to be ticked” on the proposed 32-kilometre cycling and walking track. The trail, estimated to cost more than $30 million, will sprawl along

the former Richmond Vale rail line, between Kurri Kurri and Hexham; the former Chichester to Newcastle water pipeline between Shortland and Tarro; and within the western section of the Hunter Wetlands National Park. It will pass through three old railway tunnels, over bridges, amongst wildlife habitat, and link to the Hunter Wetlands Centre. The project aims to provide key growth in the areas of transport, tourism, recreation, heritage, and economic and social development. Mr Metcalfe has spearheaded it since October 2012. He believes the trail can eventually turn into a “huge regional development”, potentially connecting the beach, the lake and the vineyards, before considering further expansion. “We’re slowly ticking boxes and the momentum is growing,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “The health benefits outweigh

any other factor in all of this. “It has the potential, going through [Kurri Kurri], to connect a lot of schools so kids can ride there safely. “Representatives from Port Stephens Council also didn’t realise that it’s not far across the highway to connect to the rail trail, and I’ve heard that Muswellbrook would also like a connection. “If we got that, then it could go to Denman and further up and has the potential to be a huge regional development for this area. “But we need to get this artery done first and then try to expand on it.” The proposal has been put forward by Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Cessnock councils, with support from the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Donaldson Conservation Trust, and the Mindaribba and Awabakal Local Aboriginal Land councils. It is divided into two sections:

Shortland to Tarro, and Hexham to Kurri Kurri. According to Newcastle council, the Shortland to Tarro stretch is in stage two. This involves a complete detailed design and preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) prior to a review by the three councils. Stage one for the Hexham to Kurri Kurri section will be completed in the near future. It includes the concept design and Review of Environmental Factors (REF). At Newcastle council’s December meeting, lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes called for the establishment of a working party to deliver a “truly iconic infrastructure project” for the Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Area. The working party will potentially consist of councillors, officers and community members

from within the three local government areas. Mr Metcalfe says the rail trail committee aims to maintain a push for more funding to help kickstart the highly sought-after project. “I’ve been involved now for so many years,” he says. “We haven’t expanded the committee much because we’ve been waiting on all the boxes to get ticked. “The idea of our committee is that we’re a community-based organisation that is there to communicate with the councillors and let everyone know how we’re going. “What we need is people in high positions to talk to politicians about funding.” Visit the ‘Richmond Vale Rail Trail’ Facebook page for more information or to keep in touch with updates on the project. - Ben Murphy

Luckily for Croudace Bay’s Cerebral Palsy Alliance, the self-professed “Mr Fix-its” of Valentine Lions Club are never too far away. The club is all too happy to lend a hand; most recently with the alliance’s new inclusive playground. Project on track Final works on the $3.3 million Fishery Point Road and Macquarie Street intersection at Morisset will be completed in January – a month ahead of schedule. Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper said the new traffic lights, expected to be switched on today (Thursday 20 December), would improve traffic flow and safety in the area. “I’m very grateful that the state government and RMS are delivering this important upgrade to cater for the needs of the growing local community,” he said. “While it’s on budget and ahead of schedule, we’re also getting a quality job, with sandstone retaining walls already completed.” Mr Piper said the project also included building raised concrete islands and changing line marking to provide clearer guidance for motorists at the busy intersection. “An additional right-turn lane will be added from Macquarie Street into Fishery Point Road, and road widening will be carried out to provide a second southbound lane on Fishery Point Road,” he said.

From page 4 This helped determine the structural design required to withstand wave impact in severe weather events, as well as the final shape to minimise impacts on the beach, maximise safety, amenity and structural integrity, and minimise maintenance. However, Peter Evans, a Newcastle resident and retired coastal engineer with almost 40 years’ experience, believes the “irresponsible and ill-conceived” proposal needs to be abandoned. “It is a well-established principle in coastal management that any structure on a beach will adversely affect it and, the more seaward, the worse the impact,” he says. “Newcastle Beach is more sensitive than most and is frequently narrow and has, in the past, been completely stripped of sand.” Mr Evans adds the waves will be reflected by the structure, which has the potential to scour sand from in front of the structure and make the beach slower to recover; cause erosion of the adjacent beach, north and south; and create hazardous swimming conditions and adversely affect surfing conditions. “Council is relying on the coastal engineering

review prepared by Advisian/WorleyParsons in 2017 to counter objections such as these,” he says. “That review was a first-pass assessment based on simple generic methods – it is not of the required standard to assess the environmental impact of the proposal.” Mr Evans also believes the cost of building the bowl to withstand the massive forces associated with breaking waves will be huge and questions how the development gained consent. “The Coastal Management Act 2016 aims to protect and preserve beaches and the coast, including public access to, and along, beaches,” he says. “Given its provisions, it is hard to see how a legitimate consent could be granted to this development. “The sooner council abandons this irresponsible and ill-conceived proposal, the better.” On its website, Newcastle council stated it expected to complete documentation for stage one of the Bathers Way project, which included the skate bowl and plaza, by early 2019 and hoped to begin construction around July. - Ben Murphy

Hunt for artefacts Plans are underway to dig deeper into Lake Macquarie’s rich history and the artefacts that help bring it to life. Lake Macquarie council has sought to appoint a heritage expert to work with local historical groups, auditing significant items in their collections. The council’s cultural services manager, Jacqui Hemsley, said there had never been a citywide survey to gauge the breadth and depth of historic items held. “We’ve got some wonderful historical societies with some amazing collections but, in order to make those collections more accessible to the community and to use them in public programs, we need to know exactly what they are,” she said. “We need someone to work with these groups and council’s cultural services staff to find out what we have and how significant these items are.” The successful applicant will work with three historical groups: the Teralba Miners Museum, the West Wallsend Mining Museum, and the Rathmines Catalina Cultural Association. 2018 has been another year of important work by our local team here at Lifeline in the Hunter and Central Coast region. Working alongside many other local organisations, we continued to serve you, our community, with the aim of one day seeing our vision of An Australia Free of Suicide become a reality. On behalf of our local team, I’d like to thank our supporters, both corporate and in community without who, our work would not be possible. I’d also like to sincerely thank all our team, including volunteers and our paid staff, who’s tireless work means so much to many in our community. We are local people helping local people.

Lifeline thanks our many local community partners and supporters including both organisations, individuals and the many families who have kindly provided financial and other support for our activities here locally in the Hunter and Central Coast region. This included community events such as the Port Waratah Coal Services/Pacific National and Hunter Young Professionals Trivia Nights and the Belmont 16’s Melbourne Cup Day. We were also fortunate to benefit from the NSW Club Grants program, with local clubs Belmont 16s, Wests Group, South Newcastle Leagues Club Wallsend Diggers, Wyong Rugby League Club, Ettalong Beach Memorial Club and The Entrance Leagues Club all providing valuable financial support for our important suicide prevention work in the region. Importantly, individual donations from the community, from those either impacted by suicide directly or an awareness of the issue, have been vital in the continued delivery of our services.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS Our Dine With Dylan lunch, supported by ANZ, saw more than $40,000 raised when Paralympic Gold Medallist Dylan Alcott visited town for our sold out function at Wests Newcastle. A 100 Club raffle supported by many of Newcastle’s leading businesses who offered prizes, raised $10,000 and further funds were raised through an auction of artworks produced by TAFE Art School students as part of the ANZ Face of Newcastle art prize. Whilst World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, saw over 500 people walk to raise awareness of suicide in our community. Supported by Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group and the local PHN, local and state MP’s, Council representatives, families and friends impacted by suicide, first responders as well as the Newcastle Jets men’s and women’s teams walked from Dixon Park to Merewether and return in a great show of local community support for each other.

Riding waves for a worthy cause Competitive surfers Jake Sylvester, James McMorland, Jake Ingle and Byron Howarth will line up for Lake Macquarie council in a charity Surfest contest. The foursome are part of a team of beach lifeguards that will compete in the Surfest Evolution Charity Cup at Dixon Park Beach in March. Team Lake Mac will be up against 20 other corporate squads in a tag-team surfing event that aims to raise $120,000 for the Mark Hughes Foundation, supporting brain cancer research and those affected by the disease. Lake Macquarie is the only local council entered in the corporate challenge event. Its acting professional beach lifeguard team leader, Lucas Samways, said hopes were high the team would take home the trophy in 2019 after making it to the semi-finals in 2018. “The boys will no doubt show off some of their skills in the water, but equally important is the money they’ll raise for the Mark Hughes

Unbeaten A-League leaders, Perth, pounced to pick up a 2-0 win against Newcastle at the weekend, despite the Jets dominating for large periods. Newcastle had 60% of possession and recorded 22 shots to the Glory’s four, but Perth proved to be the more clinical side. Nectarine & apricot chia puddings Prep: 25 mins

Method

Serves: 4

Place coconut milk, chia seeds and vanilla into a bowl and stir until well combined. Set aside for 15 minutes to thicken.

Ingredients 2x 270ml cans coconut milk

Spoon half the chia mixture into the base of 4x 1-cup capacity glasses or glass bowls. Top with half the peaches and apricots.

3/4 cup white chia seeds 1 tsp vanilla extract 4 yellow nectarines, stone removed, cut into thin wedges

Spoon remaining chia seed mixture over fruit. Place remaining fruit onto chia seed mixture. Place in refrigerator for 1 hour or until cold. Drizzle maple syrup over fruit. Sprinkle with coconut and serve.

Nectarine, rocket & artichoke pizza Prep: 25 mins + proving time Cook: 15 mins Ingredients ¾ cup hot water 2 tsp instant yeast 1 tsp caster sugar 2 cups pizza flour 1 tsp sea salt flakes 1/3 cup olive oil 280g jar whole artichoke hearts, drained 1/2 cup finely grated parmesan 3 firm yellow nectarines, cut into thin wedges (approx. 180g each)

Method Whisk water, yeast and sugar in a jug and set aside for 10 minutes or until mixture is frothy. Place flour and salt into a large bowl. Add yeast mixture and 1 tablespoon oil. Stir until well combined and a soft dough forms. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes or until a smooth dough forms. Place into an oiled bowl and set aside in a warm place for 30 minutes or until well risen.

Spread artichoke paste onto pizzas. Top with nectarine wedges and bake for 10-15 minutes or until pizza is golden and crisp. Top with shaved parmesan and rocket. Drizzle with balsamic glaze and serve immediately.

Elvis has left the station Few graced the stage with as much style and charisma as Elvis Presley, something long-time fan Mitch Capone strives to emulate. The Adamstown Heights vocalist will board a train bound for the Parkes Elvis Festival from 9 to 13 January to compete in the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest. He’ll be battling it out for the opportunity to

represent the festival in the semi-fi nals of the 2019 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist in Memphis during Elvis Week in August. It’s Capone’s fi rst foray into the iconic celebration of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, held annually to coincide with Elvis’ birthday – but it’s not his fi rst rodeo. He’s been singing Elvis songs for about 12

years, performing tribute shows up and down the east coast. “I’m a fan from way back,” Capone says. “He had a way with music, Elvis.” In 2014, Capone released his debut album, Bad Blood, which was inspired by Elvis’ early career. This year, he launched his second album, titled Elvis in New Orleans. It features Elvis hits rearranged in New Orleans style, so much so that Capone says listeners might not recognise them. In Parkes, he’ll be performing hits such as Heartbreak Hotel, If I Can Dream and His Latest Flame. And, of course, he’ll be dressing up to complete the look. Capone will don a replica of Elvis’ 1950s gold lamé suit, pictured here. “A lot of people also ask who does my hair; I do it myself,” the fastidious fan quips. Beyond the festival, Capone has set his sights on performing Elvis in New Orleans on cruise ships this year, building on his prior success with The Michael Bublé Experience and Mitch Capone Swings Frank Sinatra stage shows. Party a welcome distraction It was a day to remember for sick children set to spend their holidays in hospital. Starlight Children’s Foundation, in its 30th year, and John Hunter Children’s Hospital hosted an annual Christmas Party in the Starlight Express Room (SER) this month. Special guests included Newcastle Knights players, Olympians Tom Burton, Scott Westcott and Lachlan Reidy, as well as cuddly visitors from Hunter Valley Zoo, Superheroes and, of course, Santa Claus. The SER is a treatment-free haven for sick kids, providing a welcome distraction from the challenges of illness and hospitalisation. There’s an SER in every major children’s hospital in Australia, and more than 13,000 monthly visits by ill children and their families to the SERs nationally. This December, about 44,000 sick kids are expected to be admitted to childrens hospitals across Australia.

At John Hunter Children’s Hospital, Starlight will deliver 2,000 positive experiences during the festive season through SER visits and Captain Starlight Rocket Rounds for kids too sick to leave their ward beds. It will also use a Livewire program, which helps teens navigate life with a serious illness and support each other. By day, Livewire delivers workshops and activities on the wards, while, at night, the SER becomes a teen-only hang out. It’s a chill-out zone where young people with a serious illness or disability can be social, build friendships, feel independent, and connect with others who know what they are going through. The SER at John Hunter Children’s Hospital will remain open seven days a week over the Christmas period, excluding Christmas Day. Starlight relies solely on the community for support. Nostalgia tourism is set to boom this summer, research reveals. The HomeAway 2018 Holiday Report surveyed 1,250 Australians over the age of 18 and revealed 80% of them have revisited, or want to revisit, a holiday destination for sentimental reasons. Three-quarters of respondents said a family holiday was one of their favourite childhood memories. Surprisingly, millennials are driving the nostalgia tourism trend over Baby Boomers and Gen X-ers, with 84% wanting to relive holiday memories. Plans for an explosion of colour on New Year’s Eve Novocastrian families are invited to roll up their sleeves and unleash their DIY home renovation skills this New Year’s Eve. A giant cardboard pop-up funhouse on Market Street Lawn, provided by Newcastle council and event partner, Port of Newcastle, will form the centrepiece of a fun, family-friendly evening. The evening will also feature a colourful cast of roving characters and local makers, while foreshore revellers can enjoy a free outdoor concert headlined by legendary rockers Dragon. An epic 15-minute fireworks display will follow, with an explosion of colour launched from Stockton’s Griffiths Park, offering uninterrupted views from the harbour’s southern shore. A line-up of live music, including Bowie Unzipped, will drive the party beat as market stalls and food vans round out the list of attractions. “Our New Year’s Eve event will see families celebrate with a hands-on creative collaboration for the whole community and a fantastic line-up of entertainment throughout the evening, before enjoying our fireworks display,” Newcastle Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, said. In keeping with the night’s DIY vibe, eventgoers can let their creativity run wild across

a number of maker stations, designing and decorating their own colourful cardboard costumes before taking part in a giant musical parade led by professional performers. Working with a team of experienced local makers and artists, all comers will be provided with fun materials to decorate the multi-roomed funhouse. Inflatable slides and jumping castles will be on offer in the family-friendly zone, while local artist Bliss Cavanagh of Happy Senses creates a safe and magical sensory experience harbourside for people with disabilities and their families. Meanwhile, Maitland will farewell 2018 with a celebration on the banks of the Hunter River in Central Maitland. Along with live music from the likes of The Autumn Hearts and The Rehab Brass Band, the event will feature a range of free family-friendly activities including amusement rides, a kid’s disco, craft activity, face painting, and a photo booth. The highlight – a spectacular fireworks display – will take place at 9pm. There are no council-organised events in Lake Macquarie, but Wangi RSL is expected to set off fireworks at 9pm, which can be seen from around the lake.

Happy holidays in the garden The recent rain was a great Christmas present, but if you dig down, I’m sure it is still quite dry underneath, which brings me to hints for holidaymakers. Soak lawns and gardens heavily before leaving and make sure gardens are well mulched with sugar cane. Surface-rooted plants such as azaleas and camellias, or newlyplanted shrubs, will benefit from an application of Saturaid. Key words for the Christmas break are mulching, watering systems, tap timers, moistureretention aids, and helpful neighbours and family, who, I find, are willing helpers if you provide them with the necessary equipment to make their job easier, keeping in mind that they also have their own gardens to maintain.

If your garden doesn’t have a watering system, make sure there is a hose, nozzle and sprinkler left on each tap. A simple, economically-priced timer is also useful. It means just one visit a day to turn the tap on, then the timer turns it off. If you have an automatic system, check the batteries are working. Today, many gardens are smaller and filled with containers and hanging baskets – group these plants together in a shady spot, especially the baskets, which will dry out quickly. Apply Saturaid and peat moss and soak just before leaving, hoping it rains occasionally whilst you are away or too busy having fun to worry about the garden. Houseplants should be collected

Originally from Guyra in Northern NSW, Brad moved to the Hunter in 2004 and instantly fell in love with the region and its communities. Brad spent 11 years in leadership roles with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and regards HMRI as a visible testament to the power of the community when it works together and challenges the status quo. Brad’s appointment as chief executive of Samaritans sees him following his passion for ensuring that all members of the community, particularly those excluded or marginalised, are given an opportunity to live fulfilling lives. This means not only supporting direct service delivery, but also promoting public debate about social justice and how to change the structures that drive disadvantage. Every day, he pinches himself that he has the chance to follow this passion while living in one of the most dynamic and beautiful places in Australia. 62
