Spotlight on cold case Gordana Kotevski had just finished shopping at Charlestown Square when she set off on the short walk to her aunt’s house. It was about 8.45pm on 24 November 1994. Gordana, aged 16 at the time, made it to within 50 metres of the house in Powell Street when witnesses heard screams and saw

a white Toyota Hilux 4WD speed from the scene towards the Pacific Highway. She was never seen again. Despite repeated awareness campaigns and an ongoing police investigation, nothing is known of her fate. Now, one of the Hunter Region’s highest-profile billboards has

been temporarily emblazoned with Gordana’s face in the latest bid to shed new light on the 24-year-old cold case. The Newcastle Jets endorsed the use of the digital billboard outside McDonald Jones Stadium for two weeks from last Thursday. Gordana’s brother, Damien, who was 11 years old when she disappeared, spoke publicly about the case for the first time. “They say that scars heal with time, but I know that, until I have answers about what happened to my sister, my scars will only get bigger and deeper,” he said. “The things I had to witness from such a young age have affected me throughout my whole life. “I have been quiet for a long time but it’s time to stand up and make some noise, not only for my family, but for every family that has been dealt this horrible card.” Damien appealed to the public to come forward with any information

that may help find his sister. “We are all hoping the billboard triggers conversation in the community, and that someone may remember something, or someone who knows something of relevance to the case comes forward with information,” he said. “The whole family misses her greatly and it’s important that we get the answers we deserve.” Damien added the family received tremendous support over the past few months from Loren O’Keeffe, the founder and chief executive of the Missing Persons Advocacy Network (MPAN), as well as Jets chief executive Lawrie McKinna. At the time of her disappearance, Gordana was approximately 157 centimetres tall, of slim build, with dark brown hair and brown eyes. She would now be 40 years old. Group keeps dads afloat It won’t teach fathers to swim, but might just save them from drowning. Dads in Distress Newcastle lead facilitator, Dave Harris, says the group, which encourages men to

sit down and “pour their hearts out”, acts as a suicide prevention strategy. “Most of the guys who come to our group are in high-conflict situations,” he says.

“They are having conflict with the mother of their children and they are having trouble getting access to their children. “They’re negotiating the family law system, which is challenging in itself, or they are feeling lost and without hope.” Dads in Distress was founded in 1999 by Tony Miller, who received an Order of the Medal of Australia (OAM) for his hard work and sacrifice in June 2010. Mr Harris says the “safe haven” enables fathers to share their experiences with people who truly understand. He believes it has helped save many lives over the years. “One of the first things I do with guys, particularly new dads, is say: ‘Look, I understand what it’s like not to be able to tuck your kids into bed at night or to have them there when you wake up in the morning,’” he says. “When you say that to someone

who is a complete stranger, he quickly connects with you and understands that ‘Hey, this guy knows a bit about what I’m going through.’” Mr Harris adds many fathers can become caught up in the “emotional war” and struggle to handle the sense of grief and loss that comes with it. He says the group helps them to make better life choices and accept responsibility for their actions. “We teach them how to raise their kids’ needs before their own and to be child-focused, as well as respect the mother of their children, because they have to coparent,” he says. “We’re not experts; when you have people in the group with other issues, whether it’s anger management, domestic violence, mental health, or drug and alcohol, that’s where we refer [to other services], and they listen to us.” Continued page 12

news Unearthing new solutions to soil pollution challenge Soil remediation technology being trialled at the University of Newcastle could change the way toxins are filtered and contained. Speaking to Newcastle Weekly from Seoul, South Korea, where he gave a keynote address on World Soil Day (5 December), the university’s Global Centre for Environmental Remediation director, Professor Ravi Naidu, said researchers had developed innovative solutions to strip groundwater of toxic materials to prevent them from leeching into crops on farmland. The idea is to be left with a byproduct that can be safely absorbed by both the environment, and, by association, humans. “Chemical contamination of our environment is one of humanity’s

gravest challenges, which I truly believe is as great, if not greater, than climate change,” Professor Naidu said. “Soil pollution is particularly insidious. It harms us when we eat food grown in contaminated soil, and people working with soil – or children playing in it – can be exposed directly.” The new technology was voted one of the top 30 innovations by Engineers Australia in 2018, and has already been trialled at several sites in the Hunter Region. Professor Naidu said it could prove useful at Williamtown, where the prolonged use of firefighting foam at the RAAF base had contaminated the land with per-and-poly-fluoroalkyl (PFAS) substances.

However, the research centre would have to be invited by the Department of Defence to do so. Wearing his other hat, Professor Naidu leads the Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CRC CARE).

With this knowledge, a unique small business in Lake Macquarie jumped on board to offer support. Crackdown on illegal dumping Lighting has been installed at an illegal dumping hotspot in Lake Macquarie in the latest bid to crack down on the environmentally destructive practice. Lake Macquarie council installed the 20 metretall, solar-powered light to illuminate a known dumping ground off Reservoir Road at Glendale. The Hunter/Central Coast Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) Squad – a joint project of the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and local councils – has investigated almost 1,100 incidents in the past year alone across Lake Macquarie and eight other local government areas. “The RID Squad is committed to detecting offenders who illegally dump, and this involves a range of strategies, including covert cameras, forensic analysis of dumped materials, and surveillance operations,” RID Squad coordinator, Rob Robertson, said. Lake Macquarie council has also extended a guard rail on George Booth Drive, Seahampton, to prevent access to illegal dumpers, and installed a gate and fencing at Bay Vista Road, Brightwaters.

news Watchdog pursues port deal Australia’s competition watchdog has labelled a deal between NSW Ports and the state government as “anti-competitive and illegal”. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announced on Monday it had instituted proceedings in Federal Court against NSW Ports and its subsidiaries, Port Kembla and Port Botany. The ACCC alleged NSW Ports made agreements with the state government that had an anticompetitive purpose and effect on the Port of Newcastle. “We are alleging that making these agreements containing provisions, which would effectively compensate Port Kembla and Port Botany if the Port of Newcastle developed a container terminal, is anti-competitive and illegal,” ACCC chairman Rod Sims said.

The ACCC stated that, in May 2013, the state government privatised Port Kembla and Port Botany under agreements known as the Port Commitment Deeds. It obliges the state government to compensate the two ports if container traffic at the Port of Newcastle is above a minimal specified cap. Another 50-year deed, signed in May 2014 when the Port of Newcastle was privatised for $1.75 billion, then, in turn, required it to reimburse the state government for any compensation paid. In a statement, Port of Newcastle said it had a clear plan to build a world-class container terminal and protect “Australia’s competitiveness in a global market where container ships were getting bigger”. “Containerisation is booming around the world,” a spokesperson told Newcastle Weekly.

“At a time when Australia risks being left behind, Newcastle is uniquely placed as a deep-water port with mature road and rail connections to handle the ships now managing much of the task. “It is in the interests of the NSW and Australian economies that a world-class container terminal be built in Newcastle.” The ACCC alleged the compensation and reimbursement provisions financially punished the Port of Newcastle and made the development of a container terminal in the Hunter Region “uneconomic”. Mr Sims claimed it was taking

legal action to remove a barrier to competition in an important market. “If a competing container terminal cannot be developed at the Port of Newcastle, NSW Ports will remain the only major supplier of port services for container cargo in NSW for 50 years,” he said. The ACCC stated it would pursue declarations that the compensation provisions in the 2013 Port Commitment Deeds contravened the Competition and Consumer Act 2010. The state government was not party to the proceedings and the ACCC did not seek orders against it. - Ben Murphy

A once-in-a-lifetime Christmas It’s all single mum of two Nicole Harris could have wished for this Christmas. A tree, presents, and enough food to last the entire festive season. The Elermore Vale woman was the lucky winner of The Healthy Mummy’s Gift of Christmas competition. Thanks to the post-pregnancy weightloss program, she and her children Abigail, 4, and Kayzen, 2,

won’t have to go without. “It’s so hard to explain [how I feel],” Miss Harris told Newcastle Weekly. “It just means I’m able to provide the Christmas for [the children] that I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to.” As part of its donation, The Healthy Mummy team spent the day at Miss Harris’ house last week, assembling and decorating a

Christmas tree, wrapping gifts for the children, and demonstrating practical meal prep skills in the kitchen – something that will come in handy for the family. Abigail has an autoimmune disease, while Kayzen is anaphylactic, meaning the trio often spend extended periods in hospital. “We can be in hospital for up to a week at a time, and the last thing I feel like doing is coming home and cooking,” she said. “I’m so grateful for the skills I’ve been shown; now we have healthy meals ready for Christmas that the kids will actually eat.” Miss Harris joined The Healthy Mummy in 2016, and, since then, has lost a whopping 30 kilograms with the support of its online community. “I’d like to thank The Healthy Mummy for supporting mums in achieving their goals.” - Georgia Osland

Rescue Ball brought forward One of the Hunter Region’s largest and most-loved community celebrations will move to a new season in 2019. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service’s annual Rescue Ball, which attracts a crowd of 1,400 people, will move from September to Friday 3 May. Chief executive officer, Richard Jones, said the decision to bring the event forward aligned it with other events held throughout Northern NSW. Until the Pasha Bulker storm of 2007, the ball was traditionally held in winter. Following the storm, it was pushed back because most of the region was still recovering from storm damage. Tickets to next year’s ball will go on sale on Friday 1 February.

Zoo thrilled by baby boom School children and families will be in for a treat these holidays after a baby boom at Hunter Valley Zoo. The Nulkaba site set a new record, with the arrivals of two black-handed spider monkeys, born 11 days apart, four Bolivian squirrel monkeys, twin ring-tailed lemurs and five marmosets since the start of October.

Primate keeper Daisy Murphy says the new additions have thrilled visitors and staff. “With the black-handed spider monkeys, it was the first time they’ve been born at the zoo, so it’s really awesome,” she says. “They are endangered species, so it’s very important to keep their

bloodline strong. “The squirrel monkeys were also the first born at the zoo – four different females had four babies in the same week. “They’re growing very quickly; they hold onto their mum’s back instead of the belly, so they are very easy to spot.” The black-handed spider monkey, which is commonly found in Central America, depends on large areas of tall forest. It’s been classified as endangered, largely due to habitat destruction through deforestation and conversion to agricultural lands. The squirrel monkeys, while listed as least concern, are most at risk from the loss of their natural rainforest habitat in South America. Hunter Valley Zoo offers daily keeper talks. Runners take a stand You may have seen an invasion of matching Lycra-wearing women around Newcastle in recent weeks. But you may not know why. Newcastle women’s running group, The Night Striders, took to the streets during White Ribbon’s 16 Days of Activism, starting with White Ribbon Day on Friday 23 November. The international campaign aims to stamp out gender-based violence. The Night Striders challenged its members to run for every

woman killed at the hands of a man this year – 66, according to Destroy the Joint. That’s 12 more than 2017 in its entirety. Established in 2010, the running group’s mission was to run safely together, with the cornerstone being power in numbers. The group has since grown from six to more than 700 members, who use running as a platform for friendship, encouragement and self-improvement.

First fighters arrive

NSW Labor has pledged to provide free public transport for all school children across the state. Shadow Minister for Transport, Jodi McKay, joined Newcastle state MP Tim Crakanthorp, Charlestown MP Jodie Harrison and Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery at Charlestown on Monday to discuss the Fair Fares policy. The policy claims it will restore fairness and ease the pressure on Hunter family budgets. In September 2017, Newcastle Weekly spoke to Eleebana resident Jason Brown about how the current student travel system had impacted on him. Under the state government’s School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS), children between Year 3 and 6 are eligible for free travel to and from school if the walking distance is 2.3 kilometres or further. Mr Brown was bewildered that his eight-yearold daughter had to walk a dangerous route to get to school – the same path his son had been granted a pass to avoid three years earlier. “You’d have to be a mountain goat to walk there; it’s physically impossible,” he said at the time. The 2019 state election is set to take place in March.

Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison has launched her annual Christmas Toy Drive to ensure children in need have a great Christmas. The gifts collected as part of this year’s toy drive will be donated to the Maitland Neighbourhood Centre and will support its annual Christmas Hamper Collection. The centre is often the first port of call for many families and individuals in the community seeking support and assistance throughout the year. Centre representative, Jenny Fullford, said many families were finding it tough at this time of year. “People are really struggling just to put a roof over their head and keep their utilities connected, so to put food on their tables and a smile on their children’s faces is what we really aim to do through our hampers,” she said. “Over a year, we may see anywhere from 10 to 15,000 families through our services. “We aim to do what we can to ease the burden. “It doesn't take much to make a big difference.” Unwrapped presents can be dropped off to the electorate office at 2/12 Elgin Street Maitland during business hours until Monday 17 December for inclusion in the hampers.

Two Joint Strike Fighter F-35As roared into their permanent new home at RAAF Williamtown this week. The arrival is part of Australia’s current $15.3 billion commitment to 72 F-35As, which are expected to be fully operational by 2023. The F-35A, the Australian Defence Force’s first fifth-generation air combat capability, is a highly advanced, multi-role, supersonic stealth fighter. “The regional economic contribution of Defence to the Hunter is $1.31 billion, employing 4,620 people,” Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said. “Approximately $1 billion of Commonwealth investment has occurred at RAAF Williamtown to prepare for the permanent stationing of the Joint Strike Fighter, including accommodation and runway upgrades, storage and workshop facilities.” The state government said it was committed to securing opportunities for businesses and had zeroed in on several initiatives in the Hunter. These included growing the region as a support facility in the Southern Pacific for the Joint Strike Fighter, as well as supporting strong industry networks.

news Drone racer’s flying high Newcastle’s Daniel Ayre only started drone racing a year ago, but he has already managed to defeat a world champion on his way to a national title. Ayre travelled to Western Australia for the 2018 Drone Nationals, Australia’s premier FirstPerson View (FPV) event, to compete against more than 60 pilots. Melbourne-based teen sensation, Thomas Bitmatta, qualified fastest with a time of 63.4 seconds, while Ayre nipped at his heels, coming third in 65.7 seconds. Ayre then shocked Bitmatta and the drone racing world, knocking out his highly-fancied opponent before going on to claim his first major title. “[Bitmatta] became the world champion last year, so I was up against him and this is the first big event I’ve done,” Ayre said. “I ended up knocking him out

before the finals and then I won it. “It was a big run, and no one sort of knew who I was [beforehand].” A new kind of motorsport, drone racing is on the rise. Pilots fly their drones around a track but, instead of controlling from the sidelines, competitors are immersed in the race through a firstperson headset, which livestreams a feed from the drone. Ayre quickly saw its potential. He built his first drone for $100 and practiced regularly in his spare time before he came across the Lake Macquarie Miniature Aircraft Club at Teralba. “I was always looking for a place that was closed off and it gave me somewhere to train,” he said. “I raced for about a month and then went to New York to try out to be a professional. “[The event] was broadcast live

There may be a long-running debate over the humble pavlova’s Australian or Kiwi origins, but we can probably all agree that Christmas wouldn’t be the same without this quintessential dessert.

Golden crown pavlova Pavlova 6 egg whites 1½ cups (330g) caster sugar 1 Tbsp cornflour

Method Heat your oven to 110°C. Whisk the egg whites to soft peaks in the bowl of a stand mixer. Sprinkle in the caster sugar a tablespoon at a time and continue to beat until glossy. About halfway through adding the sugar, stir the cornflour, cream of tartar and salt into the sugar, then continue adding to the egg white mixture. Beat for a further 10 minutes after all the sugar has been added. The whole process should take about 15–20 minutes, and you should not be able to feel any grains of sugar when you rub the mixture between your fingers.

a pinch of salt 300ml thickened cream ½ tsp natural vanilla extract 150g thick coconut yoghurt an assortment of chopped or sliced golden and yellow fruits to top the pavlova, such as feijoa, yellow nectarine, banana, mango, papaya and passionfruit Spun sugar 1 cup (220 g) sugar

The cheat's way!

Line a baking tray with a sheet of baking paper and spread the meringue on the baking paper in a rough cake shape. If you keep adding meringue to the centre and pushing it down, the pavlova will form an attractive natural edge. Place in the oven and bake for 90 minutes, then turn off the oven, allowing the pavlova to cool without opening the door for at least 3 hours, but preferably overnight.

For the spun sugar, place the sugar in a small saucepan with 2 tablespoons of cold water and swirl the pan to mix. Place over medium–high heat and swirl occasionally until the mixture forms a dark golden caramel. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Dip two forks into the caramel and draw the forks away. As the mixture cools it will form long threads as the forks are drawn away; at this point the sugar is ready to be spun. Repeatedly ‘cast’ the sugar over a large metal bowl to form long threads supported by the edges of the bowl. Gather the threads together into a crown shape. Whip the cream to soft peaks with the vanilla, then mix the yoghurt through. Dollop the cream and yoghurt mixture onto the pavlova and top with your assortment of fruits. Top with the crown of spun sugar. Tip: Some people warn about over-whipping the meringue but, in reality, once the sugar has been added, that is very difficult to do. However, the sugar stabilises the meringue, so you need to ensure it has been fully dissolved when whipping the egg whites.

The show reinvents itself The Newcastle Show continues to reinvent itself as organisers look to host a bigger, better and bolder event in 2019. The board’s new members, including Hunter Workers secretary Daniel Wallace, local businesswoman Jeanne Walls, and vignerons Brian McGuigan and Joss De Iuliis, have combined with local agencies to give the longrunning show a fresh, new look. Next year’s show, from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 March, will feature an energised program of activities and highlights to keep families and visitors enthralled and captured in the show’s celebration of local talent, agriculture and carnival favourites. Behind the scenes, the board has been negotiating with the state government for months to take on the management of Newcastle Showground to establish an urban entertainment precinct that will contribute to the

Exhibition captures stories A lifelong criminal who picked pockets under the watchful eye of her husband on Newcastle’s colonial streets features in a new exhibition about NSW lawbreakers of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Sarah Clifford, a former convict and known pickpocket in both Tasmania and NSW, committed her earliest crimes in Newcastle. Twelve years after arriving in Hobart from Ireland in 1852, Clifford, her husband and children were living in the Hunter Region when she was caught pickpocketing. However, she was discharged on the presumption of law ‘where a woman committed a felony in the presence of her husband that she was acting under coercion’. Clifford’s crimes continued for the next four decades until her last conviction in 1910 at the age of 76. By this time, she had spent more than 36 years in gaol. Her story is among those being featured at Newcastle library until Saturday 16 February. Captured: Portraits of Crime 1870 – 1930 shines a light on the men, women and children caught

on the wrong side of the NSW criminal justice system, whether by choice or circumstance. Newcastle council’s manager of libraries and learning, Suzie Gately, said the exhibition told extraordinary stories of ordinary people. “Captured highlights the untold stories of individuals in the historic NSW justice system,” she said. “It also sheds light on the practice of photographing prisoners, which was introduced in NSW in 1871, and about two decades earlier in France and Britain. “These photographic portraits give us a glimpse into the lives of criminals in Australia that we would not otherwise have.” Developed by NSW State Archives, the exhibition features a wide selection of records and images sourced from 46,000 inmate records contained in 199 gaol photographic-description books. NSW State Archives undertook a project in 2016 to digitise items in the Collection of Gaol Photographic Description Books, many of which were at risk of being lost to physical deterioration or because they were kept on obsolete technology.

My favourite things TOY MAKING While it’s not a part of my job exactly, I still step onto the production floor when the toyshop’s workload ramps up. An oldie but a goodie, wooden cars have long been my favourites to make.

THE COLD Having lived in the North Pole since at least the dark ages, you learn to love the year-round snow. Nothing brings me more pleasure than waking up to a hot shower and a warm cup of cocoa before rugging up and walking to work!

Alabaster Snowball ONE OF SANTA’S HEAD ELVES

Most businesses start small and Santa’s magical workshop is no exception. It’s said that Santa launched his toy workshop with just six elves, one of whom was our man Alabaster Snowball. Friendly and good-hearted, he is entrusted with one of the most important jobs – the administrator of the “Naughty or Nice List”, so you definitely want to be on his good side. Having been in charge of the list since before the invention of the printing press, the advancement of technology has aided Alabaster; he’s developed an elaborate computer system that updates each child’s Naughty or Nice rating five times a minute, all year round. 54

THE NORTH POLE

SKIING I took it up after being captivated by the 1952 Olso Winter Olympics. I am the North Pole ultra-long distance cross-country ski champion for the last 65 years running.

Back when Santa first tapped me on the shoulder, it took a bit of convincing to get my wife, Helga, to agree to move to the North Pole from our home in the Black Forest in Germany. But it’s home to us and our four children, aged 457, 333, 321 and the 101-year-old baby.
