This week... From the editor Well, my Christmas tree is up! I know, I know; it’s early. But I have a good excuse. You see, this weekend, when it would have ordinarily been dragged from storage, I’ll be preoccupied with something else. A cuddly, eight-week-old Beagle puppy is joining my family. Wesley is already very loved, and we can’t wait to take him to puppy preschool, on beach adventures, and for walks around our new neighbourhood. And, yes, before you ask: he’s already booked in for Santa Paws photos. Any suggestions on how to keep our curious pup away from our newlyplanted gardens are greatly appreciated. I want to take a moment to talk about White Ribbon. In reality, White Ribbon Day – this year brought forward from 25 to 23 November – probably got a bit lost amongst all the Supercars hype, which took place in Newcastle at the same time. The global campaign to end male violence against women and girls is an important reminder that we all have the power to stand up and speak out when something is wrong. Our cover star, this week, knows all too well the sheer heartbreak of losing a loved one to domestic violence. Rachelle Yeo was not only a daughter, but a sister, colleague, and a friend to many. cover story Societal change starts with youth Two shark attacks happen in as many weeks in Queensland and the state government debates culling them. “Oh, give me a break,” White Ribbon ambassador Roger Yeo says. “Eleven women died [due to domestic violence] in the last month, and yet nobody bats an eyelid.” The Nelson Bay retiree is the father of Rachelle Yeo, the 31-year-old woman who was murdered by her ex-partner in her Sydney apartment in 2012. The perpetrator, Paul Mulvihill, stabbed Ms Yeo in the neck and chest; he claimed, in selfdefence. When Ms Yeo found out Mr Mulvihill had a wife and three children, she broke the relationship off. Unable to accept this, Mr Mulvihill stalked Ms Yeo and accosted her at her home, where he would ultimately claim her life. He was sentenced to 29 years’ imprisonment. White Ribbon Day (this year brought forward from 25 to 23 November) is a particularly difficult time for Roger, as 24 November was also Rachelle’s birthday. But losing his daughter ignited a fire within

him, to raise as much awareness of violence against women as one man could. “It was born out of grief and anger and I suppose a bit of guilt, but that’s morphed over the years into something entirely different,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “The reason I continue to do it is to effect change. “It’s going to take social and cultural change to bring about some sort of solution, and that starts with teaching younger generations about gender inequality so it becomes the norm. “It’s not going to happen in my lifetime, but I’m going to make sure I contribute [to it] so that it happens in the next lifetime.” Roger regularly coordinates and participates in events in Port Stephens and Sydney to heighten the profile of the insidious issue. Most recently, he has been involved in Reclaim the Run and a walk and clean-up at Birubi Beach. He also gave a talk at Tomaree High School. Tomorrow (Friday 30 November), on the eighth day of 16 Days of Activism following White Ribbon Day, he will appear as a panelist at the

annual White Ribbon Day Breakfast at Wests New Lambton. The event aims to break the silence and encourage everyone to stand up and speak out about male violence towards women. news Companions ready for work Matt McLaren knows firsthand the positive impact Guide Dogs can have on one’s life. The renowned musician and motivational speaker for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT touched on the importance of his trusty companion, Indy, at a special ceremony in Newcastle last week. “When I met Indy for the first time, he jumped out of the car and was straight away ready to work,” Mr McLaren said. “He was so active and so keen to get going; it was a really good feeling. “It reminded me of my first walk with Stamford [his first Guide Dog] – that sense of freedom, it’s truly empowering.” During the ceremony, six upand-coming Guide Dogs were presented with their first harness, which marked the end of five

months of intensive training at the Guide Dogs Centre in Sydney. The group consisted of two black dogs named Tippy and Hope, as well as four yellow dogs called Gracie, Gilroy, Gizmo and Hannah. Prior to undergoing the course, each Guide Dog-in-training is cared for by volunteer puppy raisers from eight weeks of age until they are 14 months old, taught basic obedience, and showered with love and affection. They will soon be matched with a person who is blind or vision impaired. “Once they are matched, we spend several weeks working closely with the person and their Guide Dog to ensure they form a strong bond of trust, and the handler has the knowledge and skills to work with, and care, for the dog,” Guide Dogs NSW/ACT’s

Training and Dog Supply Manager, Eddie Sullivan, said. He added it took $50,000 to breed, raise and train each Guide Dog up until they reached the allimportant working stage of their life. who will become blind. “With the demand for Guide Dogs’ services increasing due to growing numbers of people having trouble getting around as a result of sight loss, we’re incredibly grateful for the support we receive from the community,” Mr Sullivan said. Firefighters aided by new aircraft’s first operation Firefighters were “very stretched” as they battled horrific conditions in a bid to control a bushfire that raced through Port Stephens. NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) district officer Bert Pipan said the blaze, which started in Campvale last Thursday, travelled nearly six kilometres in just a few hours. Despite the conditions, NSW RFS stated no homes or lives were lost in the fire. However, three sheds and a number of cars had been destroyed. “[The fire] went into Salt Ash and along Richardson Road,” Mr Pipan said. “Thursday and Friday was the worst of it in regards to high temperatures and strong winds. “Firefighters were in position to save lives and property and minimise the fire to the best of our ability. “It was a sterling effort by NSW RFS, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Fire & Rescue NSW in horrendous conditions, with winds gusting above what the bureau had predicted of about 100 kilometres per hour.” In a world first, a Boeing 737 waterbomber, known as Gaia, was called in to support fire crews on the ground. One of four Large Air Tankers

(LATs) being used this bushfire season, it can carry more than 15,000 litres of fire retardant in a single load. Gaia will be permanently based in NSW. The LAT was purchased, along with two fixed-wing scanning aircraft, by the NSW RFS after the state government provided $26.3 million in funding this month to bolster its firefighting fleet. “It was the Boeing 737’s first drop ever in the world during the fire, and other large air tankers were used, as well as helicopters,” Mr Pipan said. He added crews would monitor and patrol the area “significantly” until the end of the week. Gaia was also sent to fight a blaze that started on Hospital Road, Weston, last Thursday. It moved past Kurri Kurri Hospital and raced towards Pelaw Main, reportedly burning through more than 60 hectares of land before firefighters and aircraft brought it under control. news Getting to the heart of the matter A medication commonly prescribed to prevent heart attacks and stroke is the cornerstone of a joint University of Newcastle and Monash University study. The STAREE Clinical Trial, short for STAtins in Reducing Events in the Elderly, is investigating the use of statins in prolonging and preventing not only heart disease, but dementia and disability in healthy older people, who have previously often been excluded from clinical trials. The world-first study is seeking people aged 70 years and older who are living independently and are free from diabetes, dementia, heart attack and stroke, and who are not currently taking statin therapy. Participants will be randomly selected to receive either a statin or a placebo tablet and will be followed for an average of three to five years. Follow-up is in conjunction with your regular GP and involves a yearly health check by the STAREE team. The government-funded study has ethics

approval and is not sponsored by or affiliated with any pharmaceutical company. The results are expected to provide strong evidence to guide GPs in prescribing statin therapy to the most appropriate recipients. Registered nurses and Hunter Medical Research Institute researchers, Rachel Wilks and Jodie Lynch, agree that “STAREE is an exciting study as we are focusing on prolonging good health for our participants into their senior years. Many of our participants who have joined the study are particularly interested in dementia/Alzheimer’s research and maintaining their quality of life.” There are currently more than 4,000 participants Australia-wide, and the research team’s aim is to recruit about 10,000 by the end of next year. news Vandals target memorial, schools A spate of vandalism across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie at the weekend has renewed calls for a greater police presence. In Wallsend, vandals targeted a new memorial garden, with plants, turf, concrete edging and mulch removed, crushed and broken by motorbikes tearing through the area. The garden, in Wallsend Park, surrounded an original WWI War Memorial and had only been unveiled before Remembrance Day. It took 18 months to complete and was paid for by members of the community and a grant from Newcastle council. Wallsend Heritage Group president, Kavil Martin, said its members had worked hard to improve the area. “There are plaques installed on two benches, one commemorating ‘All those who served’ and another ‘In memory of a local ex-serviceman, LAC Ronald Bower,” she said. “We’ve planted Gallipoli Rosemary right the way around [the garden] and want it to flower in the next 12 months. “Out of the men on the memorial, two were

More than 100 pupils planted native vegetation in the fragile dune system during a working bee on Friday. The students donated their time as part of Lake Macquarie’s CityServe initiative, which links church groups and other volunteers with local organisations that need help getting various jobs done. Hunter Christian School Faculty Head and CityServe Coordinator, Chriss Halyburton, said the activity was mutually beneficial for students and the environment.

The Heart Foundation says concerning new data about women’s heart health in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter regions has prompted it to host a free public forum about the issue. Statistics from the foundation’s updated Australian Heart Maps show that 39.6 in every 10,000 women in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie are hospitalised for a heart condition – higher than the state average of 35.2. It’s even worse elsewhere in the Hunter, with figures sitting at 44.9 in 10,000, which is the third-highest hospitalisation rate in the state. Heart Foundation regional health promotion coordinator (Hunter), Deborah Moore, says statistics like these, along with a general lack of awareness about heart disease in women, are among the key reasons for hosting the forum.

“It is of immense concern to the Heart Foundation that hospital admissions and deaths from heart disease are higher among women in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter areas, compared with NSW overall,” she says. “One way we can start to improve these statistics is to raise awareness of heart disease among women and the steps they can take to lower their risk, because many people still assume it is a problem that only affects men.” The Heart Foundation’s women and heart disease forum will include speakers from the Heart Foundation, John Hunter Hospital and the University of Newcastle, as well as local women living with heart disease. It will take place from 10am to 4pm tomorrow (Friday 30 November) at Club Macquarie, Argenton.

Ferry returns to service after major makeover One of the region’s long-serving ferries has received a muchneeded makeover after an estimated 400,000 trips across Newcastle harbour over the past three decades. The Hunter ferry returned to action in time to carry thousands of fans to the Newcastle 500 Supercars finale last week. Some of the key features include four onboard wheelchair spaces, four surfboard racks to match those on the new light rail vehicles, four spaces for bikes, outdoor seating on the back deck, and new internal seating. “Floors, ceilings, windows and lighting have been replaced in the facelift, the bike racks have been improved, and new surfboard racks added,” Keolis Downer director of corporate affairs, Andrew Fletcher, said.

“The new seating and colour palette give the ferry a much more modern look, and the changes to the interior have opened up more space for passengers. “The refurbished ferry is part of efforts to provide a truly multimodal transport network for Newcastle.” Mr Fletcher added it would provide better accessibility for people travelling between Stockton and Queens Wharf. He encouraged Novocastrians to use the ferry service during the summer period. “We have also installed new electronic gangways at both wharves to allow easier and quicker passenger loading and unloading, while also making it safer for our staff,” he said. “During summer, a trip across on the ferry is a great

news Student’s passion lives on through scholarship Newcastle High School student Isaac Lourie left a musical legacy that has now gained new life. The 17-year-old, a keen guitarist and fan of Sydney indie band Lime Cordiale, was tragically killed in January in a water-skiing accident near Raymond Terrace. On Friday, Lime Cordiale paid tribute to the popular teen with a special performance at the school, before the launch of the Isaac Lourie Scholarship. Set up by Isaac’s family, the scholarship includes a guitar and an annual 12 months’ tuition, which is open to Newcastle High students. Principal Nathan Towney said the memory of Isaac’s spirit and zest for life had been a great comfort for his friends in their HSC year. “[Isaac’s family] were really keen

to share his love of music and allow students to engage in music like he did,” Mr Towney said. “They thought that this [scholarship] was a really good way to do that in his memory. “Obviously it’s been tough, but Isaac was such a positive person, and his family have been so generous in sharing his memory, that the school community has gained strength from his example. “Having his favourite band play at the school and meet Isaac’s friends [reinforced] that, and we thank them wholeheartedly for their support.” Mr Towney added Isaac was a bright student, who studied a high level of mathematics and science. “He was a character, he loved a challenge, was very loyal to his family and friends, and loved his

Smart system targets a reduction in drownings Lake Macquarie will look to make its mark on the global stage through world-first smart beaches technology. The system’s main goal is to reduce the risk of coastal drownings and increase awareness among beachgoers. According to Surf Life Saving Australia’s annual National Coastal Safety Report, a total of 173 coastal fatalities were recorded for 201718, with 110 of these reported as drowning deaths. The remaining 63 were due to other causes. The report also stated that the 2017-18 summer period, from December to February, recorded 52 coastal drowning deaths, making it the worst summer for coastal drownings since 2004. In a timely announcement, the federal government has awarded

Lake Macquarie council a $910,000 grant to implement the new smart technology, alongside Northern Beaches council and the University of Technology Sydney. It will be designed to collect and transmit real-time information about beach conditions, public amenities, and services. These details are then made available to the community via smartphone apps and interactive digital displays. Sensors installed at the beach will monitor wave and swell movement, while others will screen beach activity to gauge when they hit peak periods. It’s expected to be developed and trialled over the next 12 months, with the hope to roll it out at the end of the 18-month project. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said the technology would

McLaughlin’s maiden title Scott McLaughlin took out his maiden Supercars championship after finishing second to David Reynolds in the final race of the season in Newcastle on Sunday. The 25-year-old Shell V-Power Racing driver, who only had to place inside the top six to clinch the title, led for most of the contest. However, with just five laps to go,

a conservative McLaughlin opted to let Reynolds through rather than fight the Penrite Erebus driver for the win. While McLaughlin seemingly cruised to the championship, he was given a major boost as the final day began in dramatic fashion. Chief rival and fellow New Zealander, Shane van Gisbergen,

thought he had set up a thrilling showdown after winning Saturday’s race ahead of McLaughlin in second and Reynolds, third. But it was not to be. On Sunday morning, officials penalised van Gisbergen for a pitstop infringement, taking him from first to fifth. That saw McLaughlin’s lead balloon to 53 points before the final race, and he didn’t look back. The 2017 champion, Jamie Whincup, placed third, while van Gisbergen finished in fourth. Retiring Supercars legend Craig Lowndes had a quiet day on the track, qualifying 12th and ending in 11th position, 50 seconds shy of race winner Reynolds. It drew the curtain on Lowndes’ 22-season stint as a full-time driver, with the 44-year-old set to move into a co-driver only role next year. Supercars announced a crowd figure of more than 162,000 for the three days of racing.

To make the bubbles, mix together 600ml of the strawberry consommé with the Champagne. Add the lecithin powder and blend with a handheld blender until the lecithin is completely dissolved. When ready to assemble the dessert, use a handheld stick blender to create bubbles in the strawberry and Champagne mixture: do this by holding the blender sideways and slightly above the surface to introduce air and produce bubbles. Place a strawberry on the rim of each cocktail glass then add the bubble mixture.

Songs for the masses

It’s a small world singer-songwriter Perry Keyes writes about: a few suburbs, a handful of lives, and, on his new album, a single family. But, wherever you live, whatever you’ve endured, you’ll recognise these stories and these people. Like they say in the old country song: it’s three chords and the truth. And the truth in Keyes’ latest album, Jim Salmon’s Lament, is that when troubles come in one generation, they can stick around and wreak havoc on the next. The spark for the album was ignited by the loss of Keyes’ father three years ago. “There was a song on 2010’s Johnny Ray’s Downtown called Queen of Everyone’s Heart and there is a verse in there where I describe the family: a guy in his railway shirt, the mum with

the bruises on her face, and I got the spark of an idea from that,” Keyes says. “There’s a family there, and it’s a fleeting glimpse of them, but what if I go a bit deeper?” So, Keyes wrote about a family grew up with in the James Cook Housing Commission flats. “I thought I would write about the dad, because I was pissed off with narcissistic blokes where everything they do is fueled by self-interest, but every time it got to mentioning the kids, I would start writing a song about them,” he says. “So, I realised that the centre of it was the brother and sister.” Keyes knew plenty of kids just like Jimmy and Iris in inner-city Redfern and Waterloo, where he grew up and where he still lives and writes. “It’s always felt very dramatic, where I grew up; literal life-and-death things where we’d think, wow, I can’t believe that just happened,” he says. “You absorb it all and it comes out in the songs and I don’t see any reason for them not to be as compelling as any other stories.” Keyes will play a double bill with The Whitlams frontman Tim Freedman at 48 Watt Street, Newcastle on Friday 7 December. The duo will perform songs from Keyes’ new album as well as The Whitlams’ catalogue. Tickets are available via perrykeyes.com

Poppy hits a winner with new table

What could be more fitting for a foreshore with a burgeoning café culture than a vibrant piece of functional public art? Nine-year-old Poppy Lane is the artist behind the new ping pong table that doubles as an art installation at the newly-revamped Warners Bay foreshore. Poppy’s design was chosen from dozens of entries in a competition earlier this year, and features bright colours and items emblematic of foreshore activities, such as ice cream and sailboats. The table even features her beloved pet cavoodle, Happy. Poppy said she drew inspiration from her visits to Warners Bay. “I love to play at the park, eat fish and chips and ice cream and watch the boats on the lake sailing past,” she said. “Being at the lake makes me feel happy, and I tried to show this in my design.”

Arts design shines Young artist Poppy Lane shows off her new ping pong table design.

Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said Poppy’s design captured the foreshore’s vibrancy. Ping pong bats and balls will be offered to the public during a three-month honour system trial. The equipment will be available, free of charge, from Ground Control Chippery, opposite the new table. Lake Macquarie council has injected $3.5 million into the Warners Bay foreshore precinct, with recent upgrades including new landscaping, tree planting, seating, a shared pathway and a new plaza.

Judges have chosen the winning design for a $2 million waterfront multi-arts space, to be built at Speers Point Park. University of Newcastle undergraduate student Samantha Bailey’s concept design was selected from a shortlist of five entries. The brief given to the university’s School of Architecture and Built Environment was to create a visually-striking building that pushed the boundaries of exhibiting art and staging cultural events. Ms Bailey’s design ticked those boxes, envisioning a flexible arts space that allowed people to view the lake in a different light. A development application will be lodged next year, with the arts space expected to open in 2010.

MENTOR SUPPORT NETWORK My work with such a talented committee supporting people doing such great work to make the lives of young people better is so rewarding. Some people just need a ‘leg up’. I have learned so much.

AUSTRALIA AND NEWCASTLE I unashamedly love this country, even though I was initially almost kicked out! It is not perfect, but we are punching above our weight. I feel so lucky to be an Aussie and to live in this great city. I hold my passport with pride.

YOUNG PEOPLE There are so many talented, hard-working, creative young people in our region. Working with young refugees at Northern Settlement is so rewarding. Our young people energise me. We have a bright future. Jon with his wife Leng and grandchildren

RETIRED BUSINESSMAN AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER

People who want something done to help the community or funds raised for a good cause often turn to Jon Chin. Jon came to Australia from Malaysia as a young man and, at one stage, was given seven days to leave. After a rally, “Dinky Di” Jon has now celebrated living here for 60 years. He turned 80 last month, but shows no sign of slowing down. This month, he was elected as chairman of refuge support organisation, Northern Settlement Services, and celebrated 30 years as a Justice of the Peace. He is a White Ribbon ambassador and chair of the Hunter White Ribbon Day Breakfast Committee. Two years ago, Jon became chair of the Mentor Support Network, which supports organisations mentoring the region’s marginalised and disadvantaged youth. He also brought us Ossie the Mossie as part of his 24-year long role as secretary manager of Hexham Bowling Club. 62

It is nice to get away with Leng. It doesn’t have to be an exotic location, but I especially loved our trips to Japan and New Zealand. When I stood on the Great Wall of China, I was overcome with emotion. Travel always makes me appreciate home.

MY FAMILY My favourite thing. When I arrived in Australia, I had no family with me. My wife Leng, children and grandchildren mean everything to me. They bring me so much joy.
