news Lake Macquarie loses long-running boatie festival The Lakemac Heritage Festival has folded after 23 years as a community institution in Toronto. Its organising association, the Lakemac Heritage Festival Inc, made the “difficult” decision to pull the pin on the event at its annual general meeting. The association cited several reasons for its disbandment, including a lack of volunteers and council funding, a dwindling number of entries in the classic boat display, and competition from other events, including Float Your Boat, the Superboat Championships and monthly markets. President Michael Flanagan joined the association about four years ago, when the event was renamed from Lake Macquarie

Classic Boatfest to the Lakemac Heritage Festival. It’s only in the past year, during his tenure as president, that Mr Flanagan has faced the challenging task of closing the festival’s chapter in history. “It is a sad passing,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “Although it does say something about how people feel about boating these days, with large cruisers, modern yachts and offshore power boats becoming popular. “Heritage boating, today, does not have quite the same meaning as it did to the people who started [Boatfest] originally.” Aside from its drawcard classic boat display, the event featured market stalls, food and family-

friendly activities over the Easter long weekend at Toronto foreshore. Mr Flanagan said the festival drew fewer patrons last year than in previous years, but among the most crippling factors contributing to its demise was reduced funding from Lake Macquarie council. “The funding had almost dried up; over the past two to three years it had gotten smaller and smaller until it almost matched what we had to pay in fees,” he said.

Despite this, there were no hard feelings, with Mr Flanagan admitting many events were competing for funding. “It is what it is,” he said. “The event folded for a number of reasons, not just funding.” Piece by piece, the association will be dismantled over the coming weeks, including the removal of the event’s website, Facebook page and email address. - Georgia Osland

news Petition leads to tougher sentences The state government is set to introduce the toughest sentences in Australia for the concealment of child abuse in a move that will make “everyone a mandatory reporter”. Attorney General Mark Speakman announced last week a planned amendment to section 316A of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW), which would deliver staggered penalties for concealment. The highest penalty applies to the concealment of child abuse offences. It will carry a maximum sentence of at least five years in prison, or seven years if the crime is hidden for a benefit. The proposed reforms came in the wake of a petition led by Hunter-based survivor Paul Gray and Maitland Christian Church pastor Bob Cotton. The petition, which gathered more than 13,000 signatures, called for an increase in the maximum penalty for those who conceal child sexual abuse from two years to at least five. Mr Gray said the reforms would make every individual responsible for the safety and care of all children. “Fundamentally, this makes every citizen a

mandatory reporter,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “It’s unfortunate that we need these laws, but the impact of abuse on children is so great that we have no choice but to protect them if we do not want the catastrophic effects to be felt in their life and throughout society. “I want to thank the Attorney General and the [state] government for having the courage and compassion to introduce this law. “I’d also like to thank Bill Cummins, Luke Smith, Don Grant and Alan White – these guys helped us collect signatures – and all the people who signed the petition as, without them, nothing would’ve changed.” Mr Gray said he was proud to be an advocate, not only for sufferers of childhood sexual abuse, but also those with no voice in society: the children. “In Australia, one in four women and one in six men are sexually abused before they turn 18 years of age,” he said. “This is an intolerable situation and the personal cost, and the cost to our society, is enormous. “This law will go a long way to reducing the number of children being abused and I believe it

will have a profound effect on the number of people suffering mental illness.” NSW and Victoria are the only states in Australia with a concealment offence specifically related to child abuse (NSW) or child sexual abuse (Victoria). In Victoria, the maximum penalty is three years’ imprisonment. Apart from child abuse, the state government will also introduce a staggered penalty regime in NSW for concealing serious indictable offences. This means anyone who hides an offence that carries a maximum sentence of more than 20 years’ imprisonment can be jailed for five years, instead of the current two, or seven years, an increase from five, if they solicited or received a benefit. - Ben Murphy

news Region rates in air pollution report A new report has put a Hunter postcode among its top five most polluted areas amid claims Australia needs nationally-consistent air quality standards. The Australian Conservation Foundation’s report, titled The dirty truth: Australia’s most polluted postcodes, identified Newman and Collie in Western Australia, Mount Isa in Queensland, the Hunter Region, and Latrobe Valley, Victoria, as the worst affected via emissions data from the National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The sole postcode in NSW to make the top five, 2333, takes in suburbs such as Muswellbrook, Bengalla, Sandy Hollow and Gungal. The report claims it emits more than 83 million kilograms of sulfur dioxide and about 56 million kilograms of oxides of nitrogen each year. Bayswater Power Station, near Muswellbrook, is reportedly responsible for 51.91% of emissions in this postcode. The report also shows 90% of polluting facilities recorded in the NPI are in postcodes with low-tomiddle weekly household incomes, while 0.1% have been found in high household income areas.

“It’s no surprise that you’ve got a situation where the lowest income group is living adjacent to where the air quality is diminished,” Upper Hunter Air Quality Advisory Committee chair, John Tate, says. “You can say the same about things like motoring; the lowest income [earners] often drive the oldest cars, which bring the most pollution.” Mr Tate adds the report’s annual figures do not cater for the impact of pollution on a more regular basis. “You could have a factory that pollutes badly in February and March, then be fine for the rest of the year,” he says. “So, the daily and weekly effect can be quite different – don’t accept that it’s like this every day of the year, because it’s not.” However, Mr Tate agrees with the report’s calls for a crackdown on air quality standards and an independent body to regulate and enforce the rules. It states that, unlike most other countries, Australia has no binding national air pollution standards. This is despite an estimated 3,000 people dying prematurely from urban air pollution each year,

But, until we move away from burning fossil fuel, you’re going to have what it creates. “I call for a national policy, which is what [the report] is calling for. Work starts on solar farm Construction on the Hunter Region’s biggest solar farm has begun. Newcastle council says the five-megawatt solar farm will increase the city’s renewable energy generation capacity tenfold and save ratepayers around $9 million over its 25-year lifespan. Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes turned the first sod on a disused landfill site at the Summerhill Waste Management Centre last week. “The solar farm will produce enough energy to run the equivalent of all the City of Newcastle’s facilities during the day, which represents significant environmental returns for ratepayers and millions of dollars in savings,” she said. news Skate park under watch Security cameras have been installed at Charlestown Skate Park to improve public safety. Lake Macquarie council opted to install CCTV cameras after consulting with NSW Police on how best to deter antisocial activity. The council’s community planning manager, Andrew Bryant, said the $1 million skate park had been widely embraced since it opened in September. “This new facility is proving to be even more popular than we expected, and I want to thank the vast majority for doing the right thing,” he said. “Unfortunately, a small number of people are creating issues. The site has been the target of occasional vandalism and antisocial behaviour. “Our priority is to create

a safe and fun environment for all skate park users and surrounding community, and we will continue to take measures to ensure this is the case.” Lake Macquarie Local Area Commander, Superintendent Daniel Sullivan, said police would not tolerate antisocial behaviour. “The addition of CCTV to safety measures at Charlestown Skate Park will help to minimise this,” Supt Sullivan said. “Lake Macquarie Police District values its relationship with council, and will continue to work closely with them to ensure the safety of the community.” The council stated footage captured by the skate park security cameras would be accessed and viewed in the event of a problem incident.

Cruise terminal still on radar Port of Newcastle says it remains committed to the delivery of a new cruise terminal as it chases extra funds for the project. In November 2017, the state government unveiled the proposed $12.7 million terminal’s design. Armed with passenger dropoff and pick-up facilities, as well as coach parking and vessel provisioning, it would provide a professional transit experience and a positive first impression of the city. “Unveiling the design is a significant step and it is only going to get more exciting from here,” the port’s former chief executive, Geoff Crowe, said at the time. “Construction will commence in early 2018 and Novocastrians will have a cruise terminal to call their own by the end of next year.” Fast forward 12 months and, just weeks before the deadline, the project has stalled. However, the port’s executive manager of projects and infrastructure, Trent Gearside, said it was working hard to deliver the terminal. Cruise ship visits inject an estimated $11 million per year into the local economy. This includes direct and indirect flow-on benefits from passenger spend, as well as an increase in foot traffic and patronage during visits. Mr Gearside said the port was

aware of its importance. “In terms of the port’s overall shipping, cruise shipping is small, but we realise its economic contribution and value to the region and it is part of our diversification strategy,” he said. “There has been some delay with regards to securing additional funding for the development of the cruise terminal. “Once this is confirmed, works will commence on the site.” Parliamentary secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, stated the $12.7 million was still on the table. He added Infrastructure NSW awaited a proposal on either a plan to proceed within that figure, or whether the port intended to raise funds itself for an expanded project. Newcastle state MP Tim Crakanthorp addressed the issue in parliament last week. He questioned why the project had not received more funding. “It is 2018, the cruise ship season has begun, and, yet again, tourists are disembarking to a vacant car park and a temporary marquee as the entrance to our magnificent city of Newcastle,” Mr Crakanthorp said. The 2018-19 cruise season is set to be one of the biggest yet for the Port of Newcastle, with 16 vessels to bring an estimated 28,000 visitors to the region. - Ben Murphy

news Light rail completes transformation Novocastrians and visitors alike will notice vast changes to Hunter Street when compared to this time last year. The state government is now testing and commissioning a fleet of six light rail vehicles as it prepares to open the city’s light rail network early in the new year. Another two vehicles are expected to arrive within a fortnight, while daytime testing will start in the coming weeks. Construction started in September 2017. news Garden sings once more for Carrington green thumbs A group of residents have done the hard yards to wake Carrington Community Garden from a fiveyear slumber. Thirty locals lent a hand at a recent working bee to revive the garden, which had sat dormant after its originators moved away. Coordinator Gwenaelle Levasseur founded the garden about seven years ago with her neighbours, who later moved to Dudley. Gwenaelle and her family also spent some time in France before returning to Carrington, only to find the garden had fallen by the wayside. “I was surprised,” she told Newcastle Weekly. “A lot of the houses [in Carrington] have no garden at all,

so it makes sense to use the public space.” With the help of posters she designed, pinned around the neighbourhood, and social media, Gwenaelle spread the word about the garden’s revival. Soon enough, more than two dozen residents had joined as members to pitch in and get the initiative back up and running. Together, the young and old planted a wide variety of vegetables and herbs in raised garden beds, including lettuce, tomatoes, beans, peas, beetroot and capsicum. Weeds were eradicated and garden beds fertilised, and, before long, the garden was restored to its former glory. “It’s important for people to be

news Trial to support young veterans An online research trial is set to investigate how best to support young Australian veterans who drink alcohol and experience depressive symptoms. Led by University of Newcastle associate professor Frances Kay-Lambkin, the Veteran Self-Help for Alcohol and Depression (vSHADE) study will target veterans under 45 years of age. It will trial an evidence-based online program and examine the impact of a social network support group on participants’ mood and alcohol use. Participants will receive free access to a series of 10 online modules covering topics such as mindfulness, mood management, positive thought patterns and tips for making positive changes. Some will also gain access to an online community called BreathingSpace, which allows interaction with people experiencing similar situations, as well as trained psychologists and social workers, in a safe and supportive environment. Associate professor Kay-Lambkin said the

mental health and wellbeing of ex-serving Australian Defence Force personnel was paramount. “Our online research project is designed for young Australian veterans who are feeling down or lost, and who tend to drink a bit to help cope with some of these feelings,” she said. “We want people to know that, if this sounds familiar, help is available without having to leave the house. “The purpose of this research study will be to test how effective this online support package is for ex-serving Australian Defence Force personnel in the 18-to-45 age bracket. “We will offer all study participants free and anonymous access to the SHADE program, which has been tested in the civilian population and shown to reduce depression and hazardous alcohol use.” Funded by the Defence Health Foundation, the randomised, controlled trial is also supported by partners Aspen Medical, Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), the Centre for Brain and Mental Health Research, and NHMRC

Luka-Angel Cairns has always been passionate about dance. However, she suffered from restrictive cardiomyopathy, a rare form of heart muscle disease, and was unable to dance at all until a few years ago. After receiving a life-changing heart transplant, the 15-year-old from Newcastle now dances twice a week and performed in her first group concert at the weekend. Luka-Angel’s mother, Angela, says she is so grateful for her daughter’s donor and is hoping her husband, Lucas, and son, Jazziah, can one day tell a similar story. Jazziah suffers from the same devastating genetic condition, while Lucas has a similar illness called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Drivers have been reminded to put their phones away this Christmas or run the risk of losing 10 points if caught over the double-demerit holiday period. It will be the first time drivers stand to lose 10 points in one go, after tougher penalties for illegal phone use were introduced in September. The NRMA issued the reminder in the same week NRMA Insurance launched its Christmas Road Safety campaign, Don’t Drive Naughty, which drives home the message of not using your phone illegally through the adventures of a young girl and her animated bunny. NRMA spokesperson, Peter Khoury, said the campaign provided a timely reminder of the role loved ones, both real and stuffed, could play in keeping us

safe this Christmas. “15% of people who use their phones illegally think they won’t get caught, and not every driver will have the presence of a watchful child and her talking rabbit in the car, so the onus must be on all of us to put our phones away,” he said. Drivers caught doing the wrong thing will also be fined $337. Around one in 10 fatalities involve illegal phone use. The NRMA states the number of people caught using their phones has grown 18% since 2014/15, despite the number of demerit points rising from three to four in January 2016, and again this year. Double demerits will be in effect from Friday 21 December 2018 to Tuesday 1 January 2019, inclusive.

cover story McLaughlin in front, primed for maiden Supercars championship He was pipped at the post last year, but Scott McLaughlin knows the 2018 Supercars Championship is anyone’s game. The 25-year-old Ford driver is leading the pack for the Shell V-Power Racing Team and stands a good chance of clinching his maiden championship, after an eleventh-hour penalty cost him the title in 2017. “There are lots of variables that can affect performance on the day,” McLaughlin tells Newcastle Weekly. “It’s so close between me and Shane [van Gisbergen]; we’re sitting on roughly the same points. It could be anyone’s championship.” Hot on McLaughlin’s heels, just 14 points adrift, fellow Kiwi van Gisbergen says he feels cool, calm and collected in the lead-up to the Newcastle 500, taking place in the city’s east end from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 November. “It’s a testing track: 250 kilometres in tight streets, and it can reach 50°C inside the car, but I’m certainly a lot more relaxed now [compared to

earlier in his career],” he says. Van Gisbergen finished second last year, behind fellow Red Bull Racing teammate and Holden driver Jamie Whincup. But it was an earlier incident, just moments before in the final lap, that opened the door to Whincup’s seventh championship. McLaughlin had just secured 11th place – the position he needed to win, regardless of where Whincup stood. As they rounded the corner onto Watt Street, McLaughlin took the turn a little wide, allowing Craig Lowndes to sneak up on the inside. McLaughlin (who had lost his left mirror) clipped the outside of Lowndes, squeezing him against the barricade before overtaking him. The collision sent Lowndes into a tailspin, and, with its front left wheel knocked out of alignment, the car limped back to the Triple Eight garage, robbing the veteran driver of a finish. McLaughlin incurred a 25-second penalty, relegating him to 18th position and dashing his

hopes of a win. “Unfortunately, it was just one of those things where we were both fighting for the same piece of road and the championship,” McLaughlin says. Nevertheless, all bets are off this weekend, as all 26 drivers vie for a championship finale to remember; particularly Lowndes, who is retiring. One thing McLaughlin and van Gisbergen can agree on, however, is the city’s scenic track. “There’s not many in the world that have the street race undulation of Newcastle,” McLaughlin adds. Roasted Brussels sprouts with dynamite sauce

Man food made easy

Serves: 4 (as a side) 600g Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved 3 Tbsp coconut oil or good-quality animal fat, melted Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 350ml chicken bone broth or vegetable stock, plus extra if needed ½ spring onion, thinly sliced 170g Dynamite sauce 1-2 Tbsp Furikake seasoning

4 skinless chicken breasts with wings attached Plain flour, seasoned with salt and pepper, for dusting 4 eggs, lightly whisked 240g (4 cups) panko (Japanese) breadcrumbs Vegetable oil, for shallowfrying For the herb and garlic butter 150g butter, at room temperature 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1/3 cup finely chopped mixed herbs, such as flat-leaf (Italian) parsley, tarragon and chives Finely-grated zest of 1 lemon To serve Mashed potato, steamed peas and extra chopped chives.

To make the herb and garlic butter, beat the ingredients together in a small bowl to combine and season with salt and pepper. To prepare the chicken, make an incision along one side of each breast, creating a deep pocket. Spoon a quarter of the butter mixture into each pocket, pushing to the back of the pocket. Brush edges of the pocket with a little of the egg, dust with a little flour and press together to seal. Refrigerate until butter is firm (1 hour). Put the seasoned flour, remaining egg and the breadcrumbs in separate bowls. Dip each piece of chicken in flour, then egg, shaking off excess. Dip into the breadcrumbs, pressing so the breadcrumbs stick to the chicken, coating it completely. Dip once again into the egg and breadcrumbs to double coat. Lay the crumbed pieces on a tray and refrigerate for 30 minutes to set the coating. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Heat 3cm of the vegetable oil in a large, deep frying pan over medium–high heat to 160°C, or until a cube of bread dropped into the oil browns in 30 seconds. Shallow-fry the chicken pieces in two batches, turning occasionally for 5–6 minutes until golden brown (be careful, the hot oil will spit). Transfer to a wire rack on a baking tray and bake for 10–12 minutes until cooked through. Set aside to rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fanforced). Place the Brussels sprouts in a bowl, add the oil or fat, season with salt and pepper and mix well. Transfer the Brussels sprouts to a roasting tin, spread out to form a single layer and roast, tossing from time to time so they colour evenly, for 20 minutes, or until golden and charred. Pour in the broth or stock, stir with a spatula and cook for a further 10 minutes, or until the sprouts are tender. Add more broth or stock if it starts to dry out too quickly. Meanwhile, stir the spring onion into the dynamite sauce, then pour into a small bowl and set aside until ready to use. To serve, place the roasted Brussels sprouts on a serving platter, spoon over some dynamite sauce and sprinkle on the furikake seasoning. Serve the remaining dynamite sauce on the side.

After a two-year hiatus, the Variety Santa Fun Run makes its triumphant return to Newcastle on Saturday 2 December. Organisers have revamped the event to include, for the first time, a 10-kilometre run – dubbed the Speedy Santa – for those serious about setting personal bests. The new route will start at Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Club and take in some of Newcastle’s most iconic landmarks, including King Edward Park (twice), Dixon and Bar beaches, the Anzac Memorial Walk, Newcastle Beach, Pacific Park and Market Street Lawn. As usual, there will also be a 5km walk (plus a 2.5km option on flat terrain, starting at the Newcastle Beach skate park) this year called the

Santa Surf to City. This route has also undergone a shake-up from the usual path along Honeysuckle to Nobbys Beach, to include some of the aforementioned race markers, with the same start and finish points. Variety – The Children’s Charity head of regional development, Jason Bourke, says, while the new routes have a greater undulation than the old one, the organisation has ensured all three routes are accessible by everyone, making it a fun, inclusive event. “We know everyone is busy at this time of year, but it’s a fun event to kick off the festive season,” he says. “It’s the first weekend in December – by then, the Christmas tree is up and everyone is in the spirit.

It’s shaping up to be another thrilling finale to the Supercars season in Newcastle. More than 150,000 people are expected to attend the three days of racing from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 November. Here’s all you need to know about the 2018 Newcastle 500. When and where is it? The Newcastle Street Circuit is in the city’s east end, near the foreshore. Gates open at 8am on Friday; 8.15am on Saturday; and 7.30am on Sunday. What are the highlights? The finale will include two, 250-kilometre races to determine the 2018 Supercars championship winner. This year’s main event features a battle between New Zealand duo Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen, who are separated by just 14 points. Race 30

in the Supercars championship will take place from 3.45pm to 5.50pm on Saturday. The action will continue off the track from 6pm. Scottish stars Simple Minds and Australian rockers Birds of Tokyo will perform at the No.1 Sportsground. Race 31 then starts at 3.40pm on Sunday. Apart from deciding the championship, it will also be Supercars legend Craig Lowndes’ final race as a full-time driver. How do I get there? 1. Train. From the Hunter to Newcastle Interchange: extra trains will run from Maitland on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. From Newcastle Interchange to Sydney and the Central Coast: extra trains will run to Central and Gosford on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons/nights. From Newcastle Interchange to

A glass act One might consider glass a rigid, fragile material for an artist to work with. But that’s not so, according to Newcastle-based glass artist Lee Howes. “I’ve been working with glass since 1988 and I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface,” Howes tells Newcastle Weekly. “There is so much scope; it’s surprising.” Howes particularly enjoys casting, screen-printing, fusing and leadlighting. She also makes glass awards, most recently for the CONDAs. But perhaps one of Howes’ most well-known signature creations is the glass macrocarpa gumnut blossom. These are among some of her

Howes and her husband, Tim, bought the former bank building a few years ago after they sold

their family home in Waratah, and worked tirelessly to transform it into the shop and residential quarters. MY BOYS Meet my boys, Oliver, who is 7, and Austin, 5. I have spent a lot of time with them. We have had many great experiences together and they have become my best mates. We travel as a racing family as much as possible; they are my biggest supporters.

My favourite things AMALFI COAST I really love to travel and explore different parts of the world and experience different cultures. This is Positano on the Amalfi Coast. I was there with my wife, Renee, and boys, Oliver and Austin, in June this year. What a beautiful, picturesque place.

Born in Doonside, in Sydney’s west, Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom is a Supercars superstar. One of the most consistent drivers in the Supercars championship, he has finished in the top six every year since joining Ford Performance Racing in 2006. A Ford driver for his entire Supercars career, Frosty’s loyalty has endeared him to his fans and has seen him amass 38 race wins, 117 podium finishes and 36 pole positions, as well as taking out the 2013 Bathurst 1000 and the 2015 Supercars championship after 11 years on the circuit. The 37-year-old will make his final appearance for his current team, Tickford Racing, at the Newcastle 500 this weekend and will be hoping to end on a high after 13 years with the team. GOLF Chasing a white ball around a golf course is good for the soul. I enjoy a game of golf, and now my boys like it too. I look forward to playing with them more regularly as they grow up.

MALIBU BOAT Being a racing car driver is a high-pressure job, so switching off over summer in our off-season is very important. I enjoy taking my Malibu boat to the Murray River with my family, hitting the wake surfing, and water-skiing. There is something so peaceful about fresh air and water.
