This week... From the editor The Hunter Region is full of interesting, inspiring people; so much so, I don’t think we’ll ever run out of stories to tell. Everyone has a story (whether they believe so or not), but some leave a longer-lasting impression than others. This week’s cover story is one of them. Four-year-old Halle Lambert has a chromosomal disorder so rare, it’s known only as 5q14.3. This deletion is characterised by cognitive and developmental delay, inability to communicate through speech, and difficulties swallowing, among other things.

As is often the case when sharing stories about seriously-ill children (and adults), I’m left wondering how their loved ones manage to put on a brave face each day and tackle the seemingly insurmountable. With little other choice, I suppose. It certainly puts my bad days into perspective. Halle’s family is strong and supportive, but they need your help to make a real difference. news Council wins quarry case but issue far from over Paterson resident James Ashton is hopeful an historic NSW Land and Environment Court decision over unlawful operations at Martins Creek Quarry will attract more visitors to the village. In October, Dungog council won a case against the quarry’s lessee, Daracon, after years of community concern around existing operations and expansion plans. The judgement – the lengthiest in the court’s history – confirmed Daracon had largely acted unlawfully since its operatorship began in 2012 and ordered it to pay the council’s legal costs. Daracon was also required to operate under an interim environmental management plan for the next three months, limiting start times and the number of

trucks loaded from the site. From mid-January, the hard rock mining facility will then be expected to operate in accordance with original consent conditions issued by Dungog councillors in 1991, which reportedly approved a 300,000-tonne-per-annum, or 24 trucks per day, limit. At the peak of its operatorship in 2014/15, Daracon’s extraction rates were believed to surpass 1.1 million. Mr Ashton, who is secretary of the Martins Creek Quarry Action Group (MCQAG), believes the court decision will drastically improve village and rural amenity. “Thanks to [this], Paterson is an even more beautiful day trip destination, owing to reduced heavy vehicle traffic,” he says.

news Treacherous trek raises thousands They scrambled through some “horrendous” conditions in one of their toughest challenges yet. A group of more than 30 adventurers faced temperatures ranging from 0 to 45 degrees, as well as 90% humidity, during a 12-day Borneo Coast to Coast for the Mark Hughes Foundation. The trek saw participants follow in the footsteps of Australian prisoners of war (POWs) on the Sandakan Death March before tackling Mount Kinabalu – one of south-east Asia’s greatest mountains at 4,095 metres. The Borneo Coast to Coast, led by a bunch of former Newcastle Knights players, including Paul Harragon, Bill Peden and Steve Crowe, has so far raised more than $340,000 for the Mark Hughes Foundation. Hughes, who formed the foundation in 2014, said the trek proved to be a real challenge. “The conditions were something you couldn’t train for – they were horrendous,” Hughes told Newcastle Weekly. “But we traced the footsteps of soldiers who did the [Sandakan] march and we enjoyed paying our respect because of what they endured.

“There was a lot of teamwork and a great spirit in the group. “Each person had their own everydayhero fundraising account to get people to donate towards the cause.” In 1945, as World War II drew to a close, the Japanese forced Allied prisoners into a series of marches from Sandakan to Ranau. The marches resulted in the deaths of about 2,500 POWs, with only six Australian servicemen managing to escape. It’s known as one of Australia’s greatest military tragedies. The Borneo Coast to Coast trek followed last year’s hike up Mount Everest, which raised more than $500,000 for the Mark Hughes Foundation. Funds support vital research for, and increases awareness in, brain cancer – the biggest killer of children under 10 and adults under 40 years of age in Australia. The nib foundation and The Man Shake, owned and operated by Adam MacDougall, were once again on board as major sponsors of the trek.

Plastic pollution is a global issue, so Callaghan College students have taken an international approach to raise awareness and create potential solutions. A total of 75 pupils from Callaghan and De La Salle Lipa, a school in the Philippines, made up 16 mixed teams that worked for six

pc for Lambert, said the initiative was extremely beneficial. “Single-use plastics are a huge problem in the Philippines, and the publicity around single-use supermarket shopping bags here meant we were very aware of the issue locally,” she said. “So, it made sense to link up with the school in Lipa. “The technology allows us to do this and, as well as the very practical side of coming up with answers to the problem, the process is enriching as it exposes students to other cultures and values. “No matter which team wins, some great ideas about plastic pollution have emerged, and the students have developed skills in all sorts of curriculum areas to put their final projects together. “Not least of these has been teamwork, and we’re expecting the connections with the Philippines to continue.”

Earlier this month, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) unveiled its latest Living Planet Report 2018, which claimed that global wildlife populations had fallen by 60% in just 40 years, driven largely by human activities. The report highlighted the impact of plastic debris on the marine environment. A decade-long study on the loggerhead sea turtle showed that 35% of the specimens analysed had ingested debris, which was almost all plastic, while another study, conducted in the Mediterranean, found 18% of tuna and swordfish had plastic in their stomachs. A mixture of literature surveys, oceanographic and ecological models also indicated that about 90% of the world’s seabirds had fragments of plastic in their stomachs, compared to just 5% in 1960. Duo takes swing at cancer One in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, but some families receive more than their fair share of bad luck. Despite their family’s odds, Elizabeth McGovern and her 12-year-old daughter, Tahni, decided to do something about that. The duo made a pact to shave their hair at the 2018 Newcastle/ Lake Macquarie Relay for Life to raise much-needed funds for the Cancer Council, and, earlier this month, they did just that. Liz has captained the Super Heroes 4 a Cure Relay team since 2015, when her mum, Maryann, was diagnosed with cancer in her jaw bone. “All of our lives were tipped upside down,” Liz said. Maryann underwent surgery and returned to work within six months, but the effects of the diagnosis were long-lasting. Having had part of her jaw bone, tongue and the floor of her mouth removed, she can still only eat pureed foods. That year, Super Heroes 4 a Cure raised $2,000 for the Cancer Council – one of Maryann’s postsurgery wishes. But it would prove not to be the family’s last brush with cancer.

In June 2016, Liz’s grandmother and uncle were both diagnosed with lung cancer, two weeks apart. Sadly, they lost their battle only a few months later – 16 days apart. “During the 2017 Relay for Life, whilst Tahni and I walked the track [at Hunter Sports Centre] over and over again to pay tribute to all of the wonderful people that have lost their fight to cancer, and to also pay tribute to the many people who are still fighting their battle, are newly diagnosed, or who have beaten this horrible illness; Tahni turned to me and asked if I would let her raise money and shave her head at the 2018 Relay for Life,” Liz said. “Of course, I said yes. Tahni asked if I would shave my head with her, and I agreed, as long as she reached her fundraising goal.” That goal was $4,000, and, true to her word, Tahni smashed it by another $1,000 – the same day she was discharged from hospital after emergency surgery, no less. “We are extremely proud of her and all that she has achieved,” Liz said. news Inaugural lecture to honour legacy The legacy of well-known Hunter psychologist, educator and leader, professor Trevor Waring AM, will be honoured at a special free public lecture in Newcastle. Mental health and suicide prevention institute, Everymind, has partnered with Hunter New England Local Health District and the University of Newcastle for the inaugural event tonight (Thursday 15 November). Everymind director, Jaelea Skehan, said the late professor Waring, who served as the institute’s founding director, was highly-regarded not only for his work nationally, but also the significant contribution he made to the health service, university and Hunter community. “The Trevor Waring Memorial Lecture acknowledges the significant roles Trevor Waring played in mental health and suicide prevention, and the enduring contribution he made to the partnering of organisations and the broader community across the Hunter,” Ms Skehan said. “Trevor was a mentor to me and many others across our region. “He was someone who invested in people,

sharing his knowledge with clinicians, researchers, health and community works, workplaces, families, and members of the community.” The memorial lecture is part of an annual Expert in Residence Series, which brings an international expert to the Hunter Region for a range of workshops, talks and meetings aimed at building capacity among health professionals, researchers, businesses and the public. Ms Skehan said this year’s series, from 12 to 16 November, featured renowned suicide prevention researcher and psychologist, professor Rory O’Connor, from the University of Glasgow. “Professor Rory O’Connor is a wellrespected researcher, clinician and suicide prevention advocate and has demonstrated a keen commitment to sharing his knowledge, collaborating with others and building the next generation of suicidologists,” she said. “This makes him an excellent choice for our inaugural Trevor Waring Expert in Residence. “Local health agencies, government departments, NGO providers, those with lived

news Full steam ahead for special anniversaries in Maitland One of the last rail networks in Australia to continue to use steam locomotives will celebrate dual 100 and 125-year anniversaries next month. South Maitland Railways, which operated steam locomotives until they were replaced in the 1980s by diesel-electric engines, is set to open up its East Greta Junction yard in Telarah on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 December. The event will commemorate 100 years of incorporation and 125 years since the running of its first train. Visitors will have the chance to ride the historic No.18 steam locomotive between Maitland Rally Ground and East Greta Junction, while they can also explore the No.10 steam locomotive and speak to retired drivers.

The No.10 locomotive will be on display at the yard, along with a collection of other past and present locomotives and wagons, as well as a variety of rail track machines and equipment. South Maitland Railways manager, Warren Hedley, said the decision to use steam locomotives for so long was largely due to commercial factors. “Back then [in the 1980s], Coal & Allied owned the rolling stock, coalmines and the railway,” he said. “It was cheaper to allow them to run because all the infrastructure was there anyway, so why go out and buy new locomotives? “But it got to a point where it was too expensive and they had to change over to the modern locomotives.”

Proceeds from the anniversary event will go towards the ongoing repair and running of the No.10 and No.18 locomotives, which are currently owned by the Hunter Valley Training Company. Mr Hedley said the cost, and work, involved in their upkeep was extensive. “Give their age – one is 107 years old (the No.10) and the other is 103 years old (the No.18) – there are a lot of parts that need to be

Despite the court’s decision, Mr Ashton knows the fight is far from over. Daracon aims to pull together a new State Significant Development Application, which is independent of the judgement, after several project refinements. Some of these include a reduction in total production, a maximum of 900,000 tonnes per annum transported via road, a maximum of 140 laden truck movements per day from the quarry, and no loading of product onto trucks before 7am. Mr Ashton says the MCQAG has never called for the quarry’s closure, but wanted the site to coexist with the local community. A Daracon spokesperson stated its employees, customers and the

community all struggled to make sense of uncertainty that resulted from multiple legacy arrangements around the quarry’s operations. “All of these pre-date Daracon’s operation [of the quarry],” the spokesperson says. “That the decision on this matter has taken 18 months to be delivered is a reflection of how complex the issues involved are. “This decision does not provide a new consent, it addresses confusion from legacy arrangements. “We will continue to seek clarity for all parties via a new consent, a process Daracon has been leading for nearly three years with key stakeholders – including Dungog council – to pull together a new development application that would give clarity and certainty to all parties. “Daracon still feels that this is the right way forward.” - Ben Murphy

Their four-year-old girl, Halle, has no life expectancy, minimal head control, faces difficulties when it comes to mealtime, and suffers from major seizures. Despite being diagnosed with a rare chromosomal disorder, of which there are less than 500 cases reported worldwide, Halle is putting up a fight. The condition – so rare it’s known only as 5q14.3 – is a deletion characterised by severe and early hypotonia, or low muscle tone, as well as severe cognitive delay, global development delay, low visual contact, limited hearing response, delayed speech or inability to communicate through speech, and difficulties swallowing. The first few years of Halle’s life were spent in and out of hospital as

she battled respiratory infections and numerous seizures. She remains wheelchair-bound, communicates through small cries, and continues to be fed 16 hours each day through a port in her stomach. However, Halle’s family is determined to improve her quality of life. Their goals for next year include Halle being able to independently hold her head and trunk in an upright position, purposefully communicate her needs and wants, and eat small, pureed meals regularly enough to satisfy her nutritional needs. In an effort to help her progress, Halle has been offered a place at the Neurological and Physical Abilitation (NAPA) Centre in Sydney. The centre provides specific and unique therapy programs for children with neurological and physical disabilities, delivered by registered

physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists. However, the three-week program will cost about $10,500. “We’ve raised $27,000 so far,” Halle’s stepmum, Danielle Lambert, says. “At the moment, 2019 is covered but we’re not sure where the therapy will go from there. “Obviously, spending $10,000 for

three weeks’ therapy isn’t something we can maintain for the rest of Halle’s life. “So, we’re aiming to get to [the centre] and see how she responds to it, because it is very intensive.” Halle’s family has set up a GoFundMe page. news Dale rides for men’s health Once a man of few words when it came to his health, Dale McLean’s irregular GP visits and laid-back attitude kept him worry-free and away from the doctor. These days, things are a little different. At 49, the Newcastle resident was urged to get a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test by his daughters, Jamie and Elisha. His doctor then delivered the bad news – that Dale’s high PSA levels and the subsequent tests revealed he had aggressive prostate cancer. However, it was caught in the nick of time, with the cancer just one millimetre away from spreading and being untreatable. After 10 hours on the operating table to remove his prostate, as well as blood tests and endless appointments, Dale received the

all-clear and was officially in remission three years later. The push from his daughters had potentially saved his life. Ever since the diagnosis, Dale has been on a mission to educate and raise awareness for the Movember Foundation – a men’s health charity. He helps start conversations through his annual Movember Motorcycle Ride around Lake Macquarie. “My favourite thing about Movember is the camaraderie and fun we have trying to raise funds and awareness for men’s health,” he said. “My goal for the motorcycle ride is to encourage men to have a chat and go see a doctor.” This year’s ride, which took place at the weekend, raised $2,162.

A new Bulk Container Deposit Centre has officially opened in Cardiff. Located at 1/12 Belford Place, the drive-through facility offers a convenient way to recycle large volumes of eligible containers through the NSW Return and Earn Container Deposit Scheme, with a twist. Since the centre is operated by

the St Vincent de Paul Society, the not-for-profit organisation receives a handling fee, which goes back into the community to help people in need. Together with donated funds (which customers can choose to make at the station), proceeds will be used to help run accommodation and support services, such as counselling

and case management, to aid vulnerable and disadvantaged people across the Hunter Region. “Our ongoing participation in the container deposit scheme is intrinsically linked to the society’s ongoing commitment to recycling and is an extension of our retail store philosophy of reuse – helping to divert waste from landfill and supporting those in need at the same time,” Vinnies’ executive director for central councils and commercial operations, Peter Knock, said. The new centre is one of four Vinnies operates across the state. It has the capacity to sort and count about 100,000 containers a day, and, as with other Return and Earn sites, the Cardiff one deposits refunds on the spot via electronic funds transfer. The centre is open from 8.30am to 3.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

Hall prepares for shot at first world championship His preparation for each race is always meticulous, but Matt Hall admits he has used “every available resource” ahead of this weekend’s finale as he vies for his first Red Bull Air Race World Championship title. The Novocastrian, who is Australia’s sole representative, sits in third on the championship leaderboard, seven points behind American Michael Goulian and two adrift of Czech Martin Šonka. Hall says winning the title at the Texas Motor Speedway on 18 November will fulfil a long-held dream. “It’s something I’ve been trying to do for upwards of 10 years,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “I have been on the world

championship podium three times, and it’s guaranteed to be four, but coming first is something you always strive to achieve.” Hall, who finished runner-up in the championship in both 2015 and 2016, has the most work to do in the three-man race for the title. The scenario is difficult. Even if he wins the race, Hall must rely on Goulian finishing outside the top three. If Šonka finishes second and Goulian fourth, he will be world champion by one clear point. “To remove all doubt, we have to win the race; if we do, and [Goulian] is not on the podium, then we win the championship,” Hall says. “So, we’re using every

The cricket ground where Lake Macquarie cricketing legend Robert ‘Dutchy’ Holland played his maiden first-grade match almost 60 years ago will be renamed in his honour. Lake Macquarie council voted unanimously on Monday night to rename Awaba Oval as Robert ‘Dutchy’ Holland Oval following a submission from Cricket Southern Lakes and widespread community support. Holland became the oldest cricketer in more than 50 years to pull on the Baggy Green when he was called into the Australian Test side in 1984. He was 38 years old at the time. In that same 1984-85 season, Holland took a 10-wicket haul in the fifth test against the West Indies, claiming the prized scalps of Viv Richards, Desmond Haynes and captain Clive Lloyd in the process. In 1961, Holland played his first game of first grade for Southern Lakes, aged just 15, at Awaba Oval. He played a total of 440 grade matches for the club, including 317 in first grade. Holland died in September 2017 after a battle with brain cancer.

Rehabilitation ward part of hospital’s rapid expansion Warners Bay Private Hospital strives to provide patients with an excellent rehabilitation service. Warners Bay Private Hospital opened its Rehabilitation Ward in September 2010. The Rehabilitation Ward features a large refurbished gym, inpatient programs, a hydrotherapy pool, a courtyard, experienced physiotherapists and occupational therapists, two rehabilitation physicians, and nursing staff. Following recent building works the hospital now has 29 rehabilitation beds. The hospital also offers a Rehabilitation Day Program offering hydrotherapy and physiotherapy to patients following discharge. Rehabilitation Physician, Dr Michael Smith, who started at Warners Bay Private Hospital in December 2010, says the majority of the ward's patients come to the ward after orthopaedic procedures. “They’re accidental falls or fractures, mainly in older people,” he says. “There are a lesser number of people with a neurological condition, such as Parkinson’s

disease or an acute stroke.” Dr Smith says the rehabilitation ward is part of the hospital’s rapid expansion. “Once we got the ward up and running, it’s been a stimulus for more surgeons to come on board as they know patients will be transferred post-operation. “New orthopaedic surgeons have started operating at the hospital and there has also been a marked increase in mental health beds as part of the expansion. “Overall, it’s a rapidly-growing hospital; the entire hospital has also been internally refurbished.” Warners Bay is one of a few private hospitals in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie area with a mental health unit and outpatient mental health day programs. More food and wine lovers across the globe are set to put the Hunter on their travel itineraries. The state government has launched its first NSW Food & Wine Tourism Strategy & Action Plan 2018-2022. It is hoped the plan will grow the vibrant food and wine industry, which currently contributes around $9.2 billion a year to the state’s visitor economy. Ongoing collaboration between government and industry will play a key role in achieving these objectives. “Icing on the cake” for Supercars finale International megastars Simple Minds will headline the Newcastle 500 alongside Birds of Tokyo later this month. The Glasgow rockers, with hits such as Don’t You (Forget About Me), Alive and Kicking and Belfast Child,

will play at the No.1 Sportsground in an exclusive Australian performance on Saturday 24 November. They’ll be joined by Birds of Tokyo – the ARIA and APRA awardwinners known for rock anthems like Plans, Lanterns, Wild at Heart,

and I’d Go With You Anywhere. The Saturday night concert is free with any same-day event ticket to the Supercars season finale, which takes place from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 November. Simple Minds frontman Jim Kerr said it was an easy decision to perform Down Under. “We never refuse an opportunity to go to Australia – we’ve been going there since 1981,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “We owe it a lot of our success – we had our first real breakthrough, with our first gold [album], there. “It’ll be at the end of a six-month tour and we thought ‘why not’? “Hopefully, we will be the icing on the cake [for the Supercars weekend].” Simple Minds is one of the biggest bands to come out of the UK, with five number ones and more than 70 million albums sold. Formed in 1977, the band has just completed an extensive tour of North America but is showing no signs of slowing down.

“It was our first extensive tour of the US in 25 years,” Kerr said. “We thought it might be our last; we had no idea it’d go as well as it has, and there’s talk of getting us back. “There is also songwriting, a new record to get done, and a documentary in the pipeline – so there’s no shortage of things to do.” Kerr added there was a “ton of factors” behind the band’s longevity. “We’ve had great people and a great team around us,” he said. “Not everything has gone to plan. “But we started this band 41 years ago. If you said to us then: ‘What do you want out of this?’ “We would’ve said we want to be a great live band – that means writing great songs and going out there and performing well.” The Newcastle 500 concerts have been shifted to No.1 Sportsground this year due to space restrictions for the stage area in Foreshore Park, following the redevelopment of the Market Street Lawn. - Ben Murphy

Raising mo awareness of men’s health issues Suicide is “too prevalent” among men for comedian and primary school teacher, Jason Starrett, to sit back and do nothing about. Starrett alone has lost an uncle, two male cousins, and his teenage nephew to suicide. “Blokes just aren’t looking after themselves or talking to one another,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “We have to look after each other.” In the past, Starrett had donated “$10 here and there” to Movember – the macho moustache-growing campaign that draws awareness to prostate and testicular cancer, men’s mental health and suicide – but he admitted the cause never truly hit home until he fell into depression last year. “I was going down the path to suicidal thoughts, but I got help,” he said. “Once I got out of hospital, I thought, I’m not a psychiatrist or a psychologist, so I can’t help people that way, but what if I could put on a

show to start the conversation?” Starrett hosted his first Mo Comedy night at Lizotte’s in January, and raised just short of $5,000 for the Movember Foundation. It was a fitting fundraiser, given the restaurant’s owner, Brian Lizotte, had been diagnosed with prostate cancer about six months beforehand. It was so successful that Starrett has organised another Mo Comedy night for Thursday 29 November at the same venue. There are a dozen comedians on the bill, including Peter Meisel (headline act) and 1233 ABC Newcastle’s Garth Russell as special guest, giving stand-up comedy a go for only the second time. A guitar, signed by The Animals, Glenn Shorrock, Mike Love, Thirsty Merc, Adam Harvey, Ryan McMullen and Diesel, will also be auctioned on the night. It will later be signed by Lior, Jimmy Barnes,

First-home buying, as told by a first-home buyer Buying a house is one of the biggest financial decisions you will ever make. So, what can a firsthome buyer expect? Home editor Georgia Osland recalls her recent experience. The first hurdle I had to clear was to want to buy a house. As a young professional I had done my fair share of travelling with my partner, Luke, but I knew I still had gas in the tank and I didn’t want to take the home ownership plunge at the expense of my freedom. However, as a naturally savvy saver, I knew a house was the best kind of “savings account” for my money. Sure, the first couple of years would be tough, but I’d no

longer be paying off someone else’s mortgage and, so long as I kept prioritising, I’d still be able to have my cake and eat it too. Before I knew it, I was enamoured with the Great Australian Dream.

House hunting Go to as many open homes as you can. It doesn’t matter whether you have any intention of making an offer – stickybeak for stickybeaking’s

Once you think you’ve found “the one” (and, be warned, this can and does happen several times before you end up settling), don’t be afraid to make an offer. My best advice is to stick to your budget, remain cool, calm and collected and don’t let emotions get in the way. If you’re outbid, it wasn’t meant to be. There will be others. In fact, this happened to me, and I do not regret it a single bit.

Legal limbo and settlement A lot happens in the period between your offer being accepted and settlement day. It’s stressful, at times, I won’t lie. There’s lots of legal jargon flying around. Paperwork. Deadlines. Debts to settle. In addition to this, you may feel any or all of the following emotions: excitement, overwhelm, gratitude, impatience, exhaustion, self-doubt, sheer happiness and a touch of buyer’s remorse (very common – it does subside, I promise). It’s nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. But, when all is said and done, you have a house to call your own and

no one can take that away from you. Relish taking that photo in front of the ‘sold’ sign – you’ve earned it!

Making a house a home If you’re anything like me, you want everything done yesterday. I’m easily the most impatient person I know. As soon as Luke and I moved in, I had everything unpacked within three days – not a single cardboard box in sight. But it wasn’t enough. I then wanted all the new furniture I had planned to buy, and I wanted it now. I was also itching to get stuck into DIY projects. Slight problem: our bank accounts were looking quite sad. So, I had to come to grips with the fact that we couldn’t do everything at once and be content with tackling one thing at a time. Another tip: live with some elements of your home for a while – you might change your mind about your initial renovating or styling choices. One final note, about being a nervous and/or overwhelmed firsthome owner (as I was during the first few weeks, and still am): try not to worry. I’ll leave you with these reassuring words from an online forum contributor, on what he calls “the Zen of homeowning”: “Something is always broken. It always costs more money than you want in order to fi x it. “Home owning – home maintaining, really – is a battle humankind has fought since we crawled from the water and needed shelter. We have protected our caves from predators. We have mended our tents with more skins. We have baked more bricks to replace the eroded few. You are fighting a battle against Mother Nature and physics. It will be hard, and you will be fraught with doubt. The sheer power of entropy will overwhelm you, as it did our ancestors. It is possible to persevere and live in a beautiful home, even if it isn’t absolutely perfect.”
