This week... From the editor What possesses us to hoard items of sentimental value? It could be creased concert tickets, weathered childhood toys, clothes that no longer fit but one day might… I know I found all three when I was packing to move house last weekend. It got me thinking about why we hold onto stuff when, at the end of the day, that’s all it is – stuff. The warm, fuzzy memories often associated with it will always be with us, long after material possessions are gone. Of course, there are some exceptions to this rule; for example, you’d be forgiven for not wanting to part with a gift from a loved one who has passed. But a Kindergarten Home Reader book? I think not. (Well, it survived the cull this time around, only because it has some very sweet, encouraging notes in it from my mum and dad, which, as a writer, is special to me.) Moving house is cathartic, if not inconvenient. But, if you’re anything like me, you’ll enjoy a good purge. If you’re not moving, but would still like to do a spring clean, try the 30-day minimalism challenge. Throw out one item on day 1, two items on day 2, and so on and so forth, until you’ve parted with 30 items on day 30. That’s 465 pieces in total. Be ruthless, and have fun with it. news Researchers dig for ‘Holy Grail’ of MS The hunt is on for the ‘Holy Grail’ of multiple sclerosis (MS). Researchers at the Hunter Medical Research Institute and the University of Newcastle are working to decode the genetic signals that blood cells release at different stages of MS disease progression, in which damaged nerve sheaths disrupt impulses between the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves, causing symptoms such as loss of coordination, tremors, fatigue and speech difficulties. The technical term given to these genetic signals is biomarkers, but researcher Kira Groen likens them to letters. “They’re like an envelope: a miniature cell that contains a unique message,” she told Newcastle Weekly. “Basically, they can be described as letters that cells are sending to one another. “We’re looking at whether they differ between people with MS and people without it, and what their role is.” Bolstered by a $25,000 incubator grant, the research project has about 10 to 12 people
working together, led by Professor Jeannette Lechner-Scott. Ms Groen said while this particular MS project was still in the research phase, the team hoped to discover enough new information to progress to clinical trials. “It depends on whether we can find something to target therapeutically,” she said. “We still aren’t 100% sure on what the exact cause of MS is, and what factors influence it, be they genetic, environmental. “There’s also no cure, so the more we can find out, the better.” Inspiration for the study came from glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer where tiny communication particles, known as extracellular vesicles, have been found to indicate the spread of tumour cells. Professor Lechner-Scott – a staff specialist at John Hunter Hospital’s neurology department – said it could be the same case with MS, where cells were spreading from one lesion to other areas of the brain. “A biomarker that shows when the disease is

active and needs adjustment of treatment would be our Holy Grail,” she said. “In this case, it would require a simple blood test, allowing physicians to take early and appropriate treatment approaches.” - Georgia Osland

news Full steam ahead for station relaunch The former Newcastle railway station will celebrate its next chapter with a free community party this weekend. Rebadged as The Station, the historic building underwent a significant makeover, which included a fully restored balcony, overlooking Scott Street; repairing damaged doors and windows; restoring and painting the original metal fretwork; and opening spaces on the ground floor. Revitalising Newcastle, a state government program, led the restoration works. Program director Michael Cassel said he was excited about The Station’s future, with non-profit organisation, Renew Newcastle, set to take over the site temporarily. “It will be the first real reuse of the old station, so we’re quite excited and it all culminates in the party,” Mr Cassel said. “[Renew Newcastle] will have 18 months to test some things and find out what really works there, which will then allow us to look at what works permanently moving forward. “We see [The Station] as a real jewel in the crown, so we want to make sure that whatever we
put there on an ongoing basis is the right thing. “It will be a mixture of community and commercial uses – that’s to ensure there is sufficient funding for The Station to be maintained and kept in pristine condition.” Renew Newcastle wants to focus on four different platforms: hospitality – a café, bar, and eateries; events – rotating weekly, monthly and seasonally; innovation and education – create more educational pathways and employment opportunities within the Newcastle CBD; and the people – a place operating for the people, by the people. The site’s launch, on Saturday 29 September, aims to deliver a quirky, fantastical and surprising atmosphere in the heart of the city. Fog machines and festoon lighting will set the mood, while silver service butlers, shoe-shine boys, roaming acrobats, artists, and a fortune teller transport guests to a time of old-world glamour. Four live acts – the soulful Georgie Jones, globe-trotting Nicky Bomba, Newcastle’s Half Nelson and the multi-genre style of Hot Potato

Band – provide the event’s soundtrack. A glimpse of the city’s past and peek into the future is also on offer through Newcastle Region Library’s fascinating photo gallery. news Walking distance too great, cinema pleads with council Birmingham Gardens’ heritage cinema attracts film-lovers from near and far. But Newcastle councillors have heard how a draft plan to address traffic and pedestrian safety, as well as poor and non-compliant infrastructure, will threaten the Regal Cinema’s future. Hundreds of supporters gathered at the council chambers last week to hear cinema co-manager, George Merryman, speak about the proposal’s impact. According to the council, a major factor behind the project was a missing section of a shared pathway between Blue Gum Road and the underpass, beneath Newcastle Inner City Bypass. It stated a pedestrian and cyclist count, conducted by the council during a weekday afternoon peak-hour period, found a third of
pedestrians were jaywalking at the University Drive/Newcastle Inner City Bypass roundabout, instead of using the tunnel. The council added it wanted to divert jaywalkers to the existing underpass. However, Mr Merryman said the proposal, which required the removal of 21 car spaces outside the Regal, would force Newcastle’s last single-screen cinema, on Moore Street, to close. The Regal, which was earmarked for demolition due to safety concerns in 2007, only to reopen four years ago after a passionate community campaign, could operate for the final time on 23 December. While the council claimed a survey revealed there was sufficient on-street parking within 400 metres of the cinema, Mr Merryman argued it endangered patrons.
“Many of our patrons are elderly and infirm,” he said at the meeting. “Those words – elderly and infirm – do not suit proposals that would require them to either cross a dangerous road or walk up to half a kilometre. “To walk that distance in your 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s, without protection, without cover, in rain, or worse – the heat of summer – would be inviting disaster. “The bottom line is the alternative parking plans create, for Regal patrons, the exact safety issue this proposal is meant to solve for cyclists and jaywalking pedestrians. “The way the proposal works is that it moves people with limited mobility to accommodate cyclists who are highly mobile.” Mr Merryman said the Regal’s patrons were not anti-cyclist and he understood the council’s fears for
jaywalkers’ safety. But he believed adequate signage, which directed pedestrians to legal and safe ways to cross the roundabout, would be a practical solution. Mr Merryman said, if the Regal were to close, the cinema itself wouldn’t go anywhere. “I take comfort in the fact that the Regal was here long before many of us and it will be here long after,” he said. “But the closing of the Regal again; that’s not the story we want to tell.” Councillors were initially expected to vote on the draft plan at Tuesday’s meeting, but it was delayed to a future date. Staff are investigating various suggestions to minimise the impact on the cinema.

news Council backs residents Cessnock council says it stands by the community on a proposal to open a northern access point to Cessnock Correctional Complex. The public gallery was packed with people at last Wednesday’s council meeting – many of them residents concerned about Corrective Services NSW’s investigation into a second entry/exit to relieve pressure on residential streets to the south. One of three options floated by the NSW Department of Justice, as Newcastle Weekly previously reported, runs via residential streets, just 418 metres away from Nulkaba Public School. Kerlew Street resident Karen Shearer told the magazine she believed using an existing stateowned road, behind the old Allandale hospital, was the only option, as it took gaol traffic away
from the residential area. Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said the council supported its residents. “The current access route through Lindsay Street and Mavis Street is not suitable,” he said. “[The council] would like to see this route closed and a new route established using the state road network. “We know residents of Nulkaba are extremely concerned as Kerlew Street has been identified as another viable option. We don’t want to see the access moved from one local road to another. Ratepayers will again be forced to foot the bill of ongoing road maintenance. “I have been advocating for our community as a member of the Cessnock Correctional Consultative Committee to secure a solution.”

New laws will make it easier for NSW Police to tackle organised crime during raids on outlaw motorcycle gang clubhouses. Introduced by the Berejiklian government, the reforms will give police executing a warrant on clubhouses clear powers to: search anyone on site, compel any person to reveal their name and address, and to move people on from the venue. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said the changes would help police in the Hunter Region continue to break up outlaw motorcycle gangs. “Outlaw gangs have no place in our society and we make no apologies for taking this tough stance,” he said.
Newcastle university architecture students have been given the opportunity to design a landmark contemporary arts space. Researchers and students from the School of Architecture and Built Environment were last week presented with the design brief for the Speers Point Multi Arts Space, an innovative arts pavilion that will provide a flexible platform for cutting-edge multimedia exhibitions, installations, performances and community events. To be built at Speers Point Park, the arts space will be a visually-striking cultural and community hub. It is funded by the state government’s Regional Cultural Fund. The winning design will be announced on Thursday 15 November, while the council will call for construction tenders early next year.

Artist recalls Queen’s historic visit

Newcastle’s iconic Queens Wharf Tower has met its demise. But one prominent local artist will never forget its opening. Amid the excitement of Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Newcastle in 1988, Val Anderson was asked to promote the new piece of architecture as a tribute to Her Majesty. Val, now 84, sketched the artwork for the cover of Tourism Newcastle’s program of events to celebrate the tower’s opening. “They wanted a photo of the tower so we went to Stockton, but there was no way we could’ve taken photos [from there],” she said. “We jumped on the ferry and, on the way back, one of the attendants was interested in what my husband, Bill, was doing and said, ‘I’ll go and tell the skipper’. “He stopped the ferry and ran it back and forth three times so we could get the photos.” Two of Val’s sketches – the one of the tower and another of Newcastle Town Hall – were used as gift wrapping by Newcastle council, while the program sketch also circulated extensively in the local media. “It was used a lot – as a souvenir, included inside a free Queens Wharf print, then again for the city
centre, and also as wrapping paper,” Val added. “I think I was approached to do it through [art director] Mark Widdup. I’ve always been fairly prominent, but I think it was done through his gallery and Tourism Newcastle.” The often-divisive Queens Wharf Tower was dismantled, piece-by-piece, and removed from the harbourfront this month. Newcastle council stated the tower would have cost ratepayers $1.6 million over the next four years in maintenance. Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said its removal was a “real step forward” for the city’s visitor economy. “[It returns] an uninterrupted view of the cathedral and our beautiful heritage architecture,” she said. “Starting in October, we expect to welcome more than 10,000 visitors to our city during a record 20-ship cruise season and we can be proud of the view that will greet them as they enter Newcastle harbour.” Novocastrians will be asked for feedback on a permanent replacement for the tower. In the meantime, Newcastle council will look to activate the site through synthetic grass, coloured rubber surfaces, raised tree planters, and seating. - Ben Murphy

news Healthy lunchbox swaps Obesity poses a significant health, social and economic burden across the country. Parents and carers of school children in the Hunter Region will now have a helping hand in the kitchen to create healthier lunchboxes. A University of Newcastle research project, SWAP-It, is a parent support program delivered via an app. Lead researcher, Associate Professor Luke Wolfenden, said the initiative aimed to address the nutritional intake of children to align with dietary guidelines and prevent unhealthy weight gain. “Good nutrition is one of the most important determinants of children’s health and wellbeing,” he said. “Within the Hunter New England region, more than 135,000
lunchboxes are packed for primary school-aged children every day. “These lunchboxes provide the fuel for young, growing minds, containing a third of their daily intake. “However, packed within these lunchboxes, are more than 270,000 items of junk food, cleverly packaged and presented to children to be consumed each day.” Professor Wolfenden said junk food contributed to excessive energy intake, unhealthy weight gain, diabetes and other health issues that impacted on a child’s physical and mental health. The SWAP-It program will be delivered to 150 primary schools across the region, reaching about 75,000 students and 60,000 parents over a three-year period. It includes nutritional guidelines, weekly support messages, and

resources such as links to lunchbox planners and shopping lists. “The primary SWAP-It message to parents is to swap in healthy foods and swap out less healthy foods in the lunchbox – every day,” Professor Wolfenden said. The program was funded through a $500,000 grant from the nib foundation.
Director Michelle McPherson said, with obesity estimated to cost the nation $58 billion per year, and 27% of Australian children classified as either obese or overweight, it was important to improve the food habits of the next generation. “We believe the SWAP-It program has the potential to do exactly that,” she said.

Fernleigh’s “missing link” It’s NSW Bike Week, and Lake Macquarie council has made a timely proposal to the state government to jointly fund a “missing link” of shared pathway. Once completed, the 3.5-kilometre Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Pathway, from the end of the iconic Fernleigh Track at Belmont, to Blacksmiths, would create a 27km continuous walking and cycling route, from Murrays Beach in the south to Adamstown in the north. The $9.64 million project would
start at the end of the existing popular Fernleigh Track, winding along a fully accessible, elevated boardwalk through the Belmont Wetlands, and end at Blacksmiths Beach. The council also plans to install eight, purposely-commissioned sculptures by Aboriginal artists along the pathway, featuring stories and themes depicting the local Awabakal people and their relationship with the environment. More than 200,000 people use the Fernleigh Track each year.

news Driving program expands to Upper Hunter region For people like young mum Shantell Martin, the challenge of obtaining a provisional drivers licence can seem insurmountable. “I had my L plates for many years but my struggle with anxiety prevented me from building my log book hours and sitting the driving test,” she said. “When my husband was diagnosed with a permanent disability, I realised that I needed help to overcome my fears, so I could get my licence and support my family.” Thanks to The Salvation Army’s Drive for Life program, Shantell pushed through and became an independent driver once and for all. Delivered by The Salvation Army’s Oasis Youth Network, Drive for Life provides financially-
marginalised youth with professional driving lessons, driver mentoring, and financial support to cover the cost of driving tests and licence fees. “Drive for Life gave me the opportunity to form a connection with an amazing driving mentor who gave me the emotional and practical support I needed to get back behind the wheel,” Shantell said. “I’m proud to say that I now have my P plates and I’m actively looking for work.” Now, thanks to a generous $100,000 donation from Glencore Coal Assets, more young people like Shantell will benefit from the Drive for Life program. The funding will facilitate the program’s continuation in

news New playground unveiled The not-for-profit Mission Australia Early Learning Centre at Stockton has opened a new playground, almost nine months after severe storms lashed the coastline. In January, large surf and big tides washed away more than 15 metres of beach. The early learning centre, housed in the former Stockton Surf Lifesaving clubhouse, lost part of its outdoor space. A large section of the yard was deemed unsafe and inaccessible for children. Newcastle council approved plans in July to move the yard to a new location at the side of the property, and the community generously helped put it into action. news Program’s vital support for parents Every parent wants to give their child the best start in life. While having a new baby and parenting young children can be a joy, it’s also challenging. Loneliness, exhaustion, depression, anxiety, or restarting a family after fleeing domestic violence – some parents struggle just to get through the day. For Valentine’s Kellie Jeffery, a volunteer parental support program has been a “godsend”. The mother-of-three and her husband, Tom, decided they needed help a couple of months after their twins were born. The pair turned to a non-profit organisation called Home-Start. “All of my family live in Tamworth; most of Tom’s live here [in the Hunter], but they all have kids and families themselves,” Kellie said. “Having three very small children, and never having twins before, it was a whole new world for us.” The Home-Start Volunteer Home Visiting Program recruits, trains and supports volunteers, who embark on weekly visits to help

families with children under the age of five. The volunteers aim to provide friendship and practical support to parents feeling burdened by their new role. Kellie was matched with one of Home-Start’s trained volunteers, Anita Ibbotson. She said the program had made a remarkable difference. “Taking three kids to the doctors or for vaccinations is impossible for one person, so having that extra set of hands was just an absolute godsend for us,” Kellie said. “When I was trying to feed twins, run a house and cook dinner, Anita would come over and help out with dinner or entertain the kids for a while so I could run around and do a thousand things around the house. “Anita is our angel; she’s gone above and beyond.” Home-Start receives no government funding for its volunteer program, instead relying on donations, fundraisers and grants. A trivia night will take place at Adamstown Bowling Club from 6.30pm on Saturday 27

Bike park kicks up a gear Awaba Mountain Bike Park will hit new heights as a $450,000 revamp looks set to spin it into one of the best in the country. The funds, secured by the Hunter Mountain Bike Association (HMBA), are expected to provide new trails, signage and car park improvements. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser believed it had the potential to be a “significant tourist drawcard” for the city. “What the Hunter Mountain Bike Association is doing to upgrade the world-class network of trails at Awaba is very exciting,” she said. “The expansion of the network will benefit local riders and visitors alike, while promoting healthy, active lifestyles. “I’m also very pleased to see that the proposal includes plans to provide more adaptive trails for riders with a disability.”
Cr Fraser met with HMBA representatives and Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper at the bike park on Monday. Apart from the Awaba facility, another 10 projects in the area also received financial support as part of a $3.5 million haul under the state government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund. More than $600,000 will go towards a new children’s playground and improvements to Bernie Goodwin Memorial Park at Morisset, while $620,000 is set to extend the Morisset Peninsula cycleway at Brightwaters. Walters Park, the home of Lake Macquarie Rugby Club in Speers Point, will pick up $231,000 for field lighting; Lake Macquarie council will receive more than $680,000 to build better shade structures, seating and barbecue areas at local swimming

Mr Piper said it was great news for Lake Macquarie communities. “I’m really happy that we’ve been able to get so many of these projects funded,” he said. “I am particularly pleased that we’ve received funds to extend the cycleway at Brightwaters, and the money for Awaba Mountain Bike Park will make it one of the best in the country.”

Summer is coming, and this means that so are the parasites! With summer just over a month away, it’s now time for pet owners to brace for pests, parasites and all things that bite. “Snake bites are a big concern during the warmer months,” said RSPCA Hunter Senior Vet Dr Tonya Stokes. Snakes are more active during this time as they look for food and mates. “Snakes are more aggressive and have more toxic venom at the beginning of summer,” warned Dr Stokes. To help prevent snake bites, always keep your animals on leads during walks, especially in bushland areas near water. At home, keep lawn and grass height low and clean up any rubbish piles where snakes might hide. If you think your pet has been bitten, keep them calm and quiet, and get them to a veterinarian immediately. Pets left untreated have a much lower chance of survival.
Ticks can also pack a deadly punch. To help prevent bites, make sure flea and tick treatments are up to date. It’s also a good idea to check your animal’s coat at least once a day for ticks. “Ticks use native animals as a host,” said Dr Stokes, “So you might have ticks about if you have possums or blue tongues or possums living nearby.” Signs of tick paralysis include weakness in the back legs, change in voice or coughing. “Tick paralysis progresses fast and animals can die within hours. It’s extremely important to get your animal to a veterinarian as quickly as possible,” said Dr Stokes. sport Marathon squad’s tough desert test Newcastle’s Rachael Howard was first across the finish line as the 2018 Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) squad completed its toughest challenge yet. The team of 12 took on a 30-kilometre desert run through Alice Springs at the weekend. In an emotional ceremony that followed, 11 learned their hard work over the past six months had booked them a spot in the New York City (NYC) Marathon in November. Howard, who ran most of the way with Charlie Maher, the first Indigenous Australian to complete the NYC Marathon back in 2010, said she enjoyed the experience. “It was tough, but I loved it, and running with Charlie was really special,” she said. Howard was also presented with the Nadine Hunt Leadership Award in recognition of her own strong leadership skills. The IMP uses the marathon as a vehicle to promote active and healthy lifestyles to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, while also celebrating Indigenous resilience and achievement. It is an initiative of the Indigenous Marathon Foundation – a health promotion charity.

The foundation’s director, former world champion marathon runner Rob de Castella, said he was incredibly proud of this year’s IMP squad. “Finding the strength to run 30 kilometres is a testament to their purpose and drive to achieve,” he said. “They started at 5.20am and, once the sun came up, it warmed up a bit and a few of them were struggling, but they all kept pushing through. “This run has been so special for them – to run on country in the heart of Australia, to spend time by themselves, and reflect on their purpose.” Visit imf.org.au for more information.
Ace deal for local tennis association Six-time grand slam winner and recent US Open champion, Dylan Alcott, was a special guest in Newcastle last week for the announcement of a four-year, $50,000 sponsorship deal. The Newcastle and District Tennis Association will use the funds to upgrade its facilities, as well as the potential development of new courts. “[This] will add enormous value to our regional centre and be of benefit to our broader tennis community,” president Ellen Gordon said. Add the chilli and cook for 30 seconds or until fragrant, then add the sweet and smoked paprika, oregano, thyme and cayenne pepper and stir for 1 minute or until fragrant.
Add the stock, tomatoes and bay leaf and bring to the boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, then cover and cook, stirring frequently, for 25 minutes. Add the prawns, fish and green beans, pressing them gently into the sauce; add a little more stock to prevent sticking if necessary. Cover and cook for another 6–8 minutes until the prawns, fish and beans are cooked through. Place the salad leaves, tomato and cucumber in a bowl, drizzle over the lemon juice and toss to coat. Divide the rice among 4 plates or shallow bowls and top with one-quarter of the seafood stew, then serve with the salad to the side.

Book offers taste of Hunter wine history A new book that documents the Hunter’s rich winemaking history has launched in Newcastle. Hunter Wine: A History is the result of a four-year research project led by the University of Newcastle’s renowned sociologist, Professor John Germov, and Australia’s leading wine historian, Dr Julie McIntyre. Tracing six generations of wine producers, from when the first vines were planted in 1828 to the changing tastes and rising interest in wine of the 1980s, the book uncovers new truths about the Hunter’s wine community and its connection to the
global economy. It highlights the colonial and global influences of the region’s early years and reveals how Hunter Valley producers changed Australian drinking culture by creating a taste for their wines and spurred touristic traditions of visiting the region. “In the 1850s there was barely a market for the small quantities of wine produced in the Hunter Valley, but Hunter wine became very popular in the heady era of Australian prosperity from the 1880s to World War I,” Professor Germov said. “Then, due to war and the

including Tyrrell’s, McWilliam’s Mount Pleasant and Brokenwood, were at the forefront of developing these styles for a new generation of drinkers.” The book launch took place at Newcastle Museum at the weekend alongside an exhibition from the Vines, Wines and Identity project, which was jointly funded by the Australian Research Council Linkage Project scheme, the Hunter Valley Wine & Tourism Association, and the museum.

Long weekend comedic catharsis Newcastle’s grassroots Not Just for Laughs comedy festival has set an ambitious goal to introduce you to your next favourite comedian. Bound for The Station – formerly Newcastle railway station – on the Labour Day long weekend (Sunday 30 September and Monday 1 October), the festival features a full-day program to reflect its strong, local focus on comedy in all forms, including stand-up, improv, sketch and podcasting. Local comic Liam Callen will be back for more after headlining last year’s inaugural festival with his highly experimental improv show, Hell Gig Simulator. It was an elaborate production involving several stand-ups, audience plants, costume changes, sound cues, and detailed character performances. Callen is back in 2018, only this time, he plans to make things a lot easier on himself. Armed with words and a microphone, the selfproclaimed ‘professional stand-up dandy’ will be performing his first solo comedy hour, which is all about embracing failure. Fail Better parodies the informative and inspiring TED talks that have been watched by
more than a billion people online. Callen says the show is about the little things that connect us all. “Failure is a great unifier, more so than success,” he says. “Few people have reached the top of Mount Everest, but most have burnt the roof of their mouth eating soup.” In a new addition to the line-up, Brisbane comedian MJ Wong is set to bring his debut solo show – MJ Wong: In the Wong Family – to Newcastle, after a sell-out run at Bris Funny Fest 2018. Remember, once the humidity returns, coastal roses will be prone to fungal disease. I advise regularly spraying with a fungicide, but more importantly, fertilising each month to keep them healthy. Sudden Impact is ideal, but also try sulphate of potash, one month, and apply dolomite after heavy rain. Don’t overlook a good dose of blood and bone. Azaleas and spring flowers will last a little longer until the heat sets in. Once pansies fi nish blooming, fertilise with cow manure and replant with petunias a week later. Prune and feed wisteria and jasmine once they fi nish flowering, as these spring-flowering climbers are quite rampant and require regular pruning to control their vigorous growth. Gardenias can begin to show signs of stress as they produce their fragrant blooms, which can be partly attributed to a lack of water, lack of iron, or merely the

effort needed to produce flowers. It is important to fertilise gardenias with cow manure, whilst those being grown in containers need an application of a slow-release product and peat moss to cover the root’s surface. If yellow leaves persist, water chelated iron over the roots surface late in the day. Lawns are a problem this year; a lack of rain, the cold weather – it has all added up to weeding, fertilising and lightly topdressing, but do spray for weeds before fertilising. Houseplants can be re-potted now, if necessary. Clean dust off hard-leaved plants, freshen up the soil and begin applying a liquid fertiliser each fortnight. When bulbs have fi nished flowering, they should be allowed to die off. This process is essential for protein storage for next season’s bulbs. Prune tropical shrubs such as hibiscus and Asian Bell trees at the end of October. Hibiscus need iron, so cow manure is the perfect fertiliser. If grown in pots, use a slowrelease product. When daisies and lavender fi nish flowering, give them a light prune, but never cut back to hardwood.

HUNTER SURF LIFESAVING CHIEF EXECUTIVE
Rhonda has been the chief executive of Hunter Surf Lifesaving for 21 years this October and she is privileged to work with more than 7,000 volunteers. Born in Newcastle and a former student at Newcastle Girls High School, Rhonda’s love of the city and its people is very special. Her goal – to have modern surf clubs throughout the Hunter Region – is coming to fruition. Rhonda aims to not only provide the safest and most beautiful beaches in Australia, but also offer excellent clubs from which to work, educate and patrol. Hunter Surf Lifesaving, which unites 13 clubs, will celebrate its centenary with a flag-raising ceremony at Nobbys Beach this Saturday 29 September from 9am. 62
EDUCATION I really enjoy learning about the history of Australia and, of course, surf lifesaving. The surf movement really grew after WWI when soldiers came home after the war and banded together to continue protecting Australians. Mateship, integrity and discipline are very strong traits of lifesavers.
