This week... From the editor When did we get so busy? These days, we wear it like a badge of honour. We say 'yes' to this, and 'yes' to that, until we're up to our eyeballs in events, engagements and errands. Surely I can't be the only one who feels relieved at the sight of a clear calendar. A busy life is not always an indicator of a successful one, despite the pressure we might feel to live up to these standards. With this in mind, it's little wonder that, on average, one in three Aussie women and one in five Aussie men will experience anxiety in their lifetime [beyondblue.org.au]. My friends, it's OK to say 'no'. If you feel like you have too much on your plate, scrape some off. You don't have to answer to anyone but yourself; it's as simple as that. I should practice what I preach. Yes, I, too, am guilty of overloading my schedule purely because I feel that's what I must do. Yet, I know how great it feels to arrive at the weekend with no plans and the potential to do as much or as little as I'd like. I'm not suggesting you or I should become a recluse. Just stop and think before you mindlessly accept an invitation you'd really rather turn down. You never know; you might find yourself with spare time to smell the roses. - Georgia Osland

news Gaol route proposal raises red flags A proposed new access road to Cessnock Correctional Complex has prompted concerns over a “rat run” through Nulkaba and the path’s proximity to a primary school. The state government is upgrading the Lower Hunter-based gaol to provide additional minimum-and-maximum-security capacity. It claimed Cessnock council, residents and other stakeholders requested that a permanent northern access road be built to relieve pressure on residential streets to the south. Corrective Services NSW agreed to conduct a detailed assessment of a route from Kerlew Street, west of Occident Street, running south-west. Another option would require the demolition of buildings within the centre, while a third was considered close to adjacent residences. According to Kerlew Street resident Karen Shearer, the community believes there is only one option. She says an existing state-owned road, behind the old Allandale hospital, will take gaol traffic off residential streets and away from Nulkaba Public School.

“When people get released, they’ll be walking through the community and there is a school that’s 418 metres away from where they are proposing the new entrance,” she told Newcastle Weekly. “The [state] government started work on 14 new classrooms, a new front office and other improvements, so we were thinking the school was trying to expand and then they’re looking to put all this extra traffic through the area. “[The Department of] Justice said they’d build the new road, but ratepayers are up for maintenance after that as well. “We want to invite more community consultation from Justice.” A fact sheet, released by the state government this month, recognised the community’s “desire for certainty around any new northern access road”, but noted it was important to “fully investigate the options prior to finalising any proposal”. Meanwhile, work will soon start on Cessnock Correctional Complex’s 240-bed expansion. It includes five new minimum-security accommodation blocks, a visiting area, programs

building and health clinic, as well as additional parking for staff and visitors. Minister for Corrections David Elliott said the expansion would deliver about 300 jobs during construction and more than 40 when finished. A 330-bed maximum-security facility is also expected to be completed by mid-2019, while a new 400-bed maximum-security site, the Hunter Correctional Centre, has already opened. “The state government is committed to investing in the Hunter and this new development will continue to stimulate jobs and growth,” Mr Elliott said. - Ben Murphy

news New hospital edges closer A contractor has been appointed for the new $470 million Maitland Hospital at Metford. Multiplex Constructions will work with CBRE Project Managers, Hunter New England Local Health District and Health Infrastructure to build the facility. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said construction could now start early next year. “The new Maitland Hospital will be almost twice the size of the existing hospital, delivering on the NSW government’s commitment to improve regional access to quality health care,” he said. However Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison believed there must be local workers, including apprentices, Aboriginal people and women, employed on the construction. She added her office had

received calls from Maitland companies concerned that local firms would be overlooked. “The NSW government must ensure that local tradespeople, and especially young people, Aboriginal people and women seeking employment, are given a fair chance to participate in this project,” she said. “The new Maitland Hospital is the single biggest public infrastructure investment by the state in Maitland and there should be a significant economic boost for the city.” The hospital, which is expected to open in 2022, will deliver expanded services and facilities, such as emergency services; medical, surgical, paediatric and maternity services; palliative care and rehabilitation services; and mental health services.

Support for Boat ramp popular centre design on table Morisset PCYC will no longer be at the mercy of extreme weather after the state government awarded it $140,000 to improve the centre’s facilities. “We hit 44.5 degrees inside one day last summer and we’ve been down to as low as two degrees in the winter,” club manager Rosmairi Dawson said. “This grant will allow us to install a special type of ceiling insulation, which is like refrigerator panels. “It will drastically improve conditions inside for sporting teams and other activities.” Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper secured the funds, which came under round two of the government’s stronger country communities program.

An improved design proposal for Pelican Boat Ramp aims to better adapt to the dynamic marine environment. The revised design features two boat lines with twin wave-weakening pontoons, which will create a protected harbour for launching and retrieving boats. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said council would move forward with a solution for the boat ramp while it investigates options to address the long-term problem of erosion in the area. Pelican Boat Ramp was closed in October 2015 due to tidal erosion and damage incurred in the April super storm. A community information session will now take place on site between 9.30am and 11.30am on Saturday 6 October.

Inquiry hears PFAS concerns Coalition Against PFAS (CAP) president Lindsay Clout believes the “denial is weakening” after a parliamentary inquiry into the management of per-and-polyfluoroalkyl substances in and around Department of Defence bases. The inquiry sparked public hearings in Katherine, Williamtown, Oakey and Canberra over the past three months. Mr Clout, a Fullerton Cove resident, was chosen to lead CAP, the national coalition that represents communities contaminated by PFAS chemicals across Australia, amid its formation in July. He said the final inquiry hearing, in the nation’s capital last Friday, highlighted a “significant shift in attitudes”. “There is a growing acceptance that there's an issue,” Mr Clout told Newcastle Weekly.

“You’ve got to temper that with the fact it’s been going on for three years and hope you’re not being drawn into bureaucratic speed, but it looks like we’ve had an impact. “This [process] has shown that you can't just have a good argument and present it to senior bureaucrats and expect it to be taken up, you’ve got to keep going.” The inquiry was conducted by the PFAS sub-committee of the parliament’s joint standing committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade. Mr Clout, and other CAP representatives, wrote a letter to the PFAS sub-committee’s chair, Andrew Laming MP, prior to the final hearing in Canberra. The letter noted a sense of deep frustration and raw anger from impacted communities throughout the inquiry.

“That anger is born of years of inaction – of having to, time and again, knock on doors and seek a response to one of the largest known community contamination events seen since asbestos,” it read. “Of fear of what the stain of contamination may do to house prices, businesses, or community reputation.

“This committee has the opportunity to stand on the right side of history. “It has the chance to ditch political expediency or fear as to the consequences of telling the truth about PFAS contamination and take genuine steps to address this issue now.” - Ben Murphy

news Petition pushes for tougher penalties on child abuse As the adage goes: it takes a village to raise a child. “But the village has been turning its back for too long in our society,” child abuse survivor Paul Gray said. Mr Gray, a former Anglican altar boy, was sexually abused by his godfather, the late Fr Peter Rushton, in the 1960s. A small group of survivor advocates have created a petition calling for an increase in the maximum penalty for concealing child sex offences from two years imprisonment to no less than five years. The petition has already collected more than 6,000 signatures; it must reach 10,000 for a debate to take place in NSW Parliament. Mr Gray joined Maitland-based pastor, Bob Cotton, in Kurri Kurri on Monday to speak with the community. The survivor advocates want to table the petition by mid-October. “This is not about politics, it’s not about religion – it’s about protecting children,” Mr Gray said.

“Let’s look after our kids, let’s stop them being abused, because this is a society-wide issue.” In April, the state government announced it would introduce law reforms after the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sex Abuse. Some of the key changes included: a maximum life sentence for persistent child sexual abuse; an offender’s good character will not be taken into account by the court when sentencing for historic offences where their reputation facilitated the offending; a new offence of grooming an adult to access a child; and new offences for failure to report and failure to protect against child abuse. However, Pastor Cotton believed a maximum of two years imprisonment did not serve as a deterrent for those who concealed acts of child sex abuse. He said concealment laws were not in line with public expectation. “How many times has the penalty for using a mobile phone been increased in the past five years?” he asked. “Every time you turn around, they increase the

penalty. Why? To act as a deterrent. “How come they are not increasing the penalty for concealing child sex offences? “If they’re serious about this, they’ll increase the penalty because the one who protects the paedophile is the linchpin in this story.” Mr Gray believed so many victims could be productive members of society if there was a reduction in incidents of child sex abuse. “I’ve been on a pension for eight years,” he said. “I used to run businesses before my complete breakdown in life. “And then, over those eight years, I’ve had 400-plus counsellor sessions, psychiatric hospitals – all of that. “So I’m taking out of society now, whereas, if I [wasn’t abused], I would’ve been giving, all the time.” If you’d like to sign the petition, visit petitionnsw.org.au to download it and return the completed form to: Petition NSW, PO Box 20, Maitland, NSW, 2320. - Ben Murphy

Public transport improvements

Aerospace hub soars into region A defence, aerospace and technology hub near Newcastle Airport has been hailed as a nationally significant project that will generate more than 5,000 jobs in the Hunter Region. The $20 million Astra Aerolab is set to house maintenance and support services for Australian fighter jets and drive an estimated $246 million into the NSW economy. Port Stephens and Newcastle councils – joint shareholders of the airport – will contribute $7.86 million, while the state government has also committed $11.7 million towards the project. Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said it promised a bright new era of jobs-led economic growth for the region. “This hub will create up to 5,500 local, highly-skilled jobs in defence tech, smart manufacturing and service delivery, which will support Greater Newcastle’s growing population and ensure our sustained prosperity,” she said. “One of the strategic directions of the smart city plan, adopted by council last year, was to invest in innovationbased projects and provide a roadmap and infrastructure support to attract industry and investment.

“By doing this, we are driving the transition from a great regional centre to a smart, liveable, and sustainable global city.” Located adjacent to the airport and RAAF Base Williamtown, the Astra Aerolab will feature 46 hectares of developable land, up to 73 lots; direct airside access for selected lots; and an on-site lifestyle with cafés, parks and cycleways. Newcastle Airport chief executive Peter Cock said the state government’s financial support would kick-start the project’s development. “We want to create a precinct that fuels pride as well as growth – a place where people and businesses want to work,” he said.

Maitland council will use a $296,500 grant from the state government to improve public transport infrastructure. The grant will help to build 24 new accessible bus shelters, while a further 29 shelters are to be upgraded to meet disability access standards. Maitland mayor Loretta Baker said it would go a long way towards the council’s goal of making all bus stops across the local government area compliant with Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport. “Maitland is the fastest growing non-metro region in NSW, so it is important that we not only have continued investment from other levels of government in public transport infrastructure, but that the resulting infrastructure is accessible,” she said. The funding was provided under the 2017-19 Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme.

Could fibre supplements help asthma sufferers? Newcastle university researchers have launched a clinical trial to help optimise the anti-inflammatory properties of soluble fibre supplements in asthma treatment. Currently in the recruitment phase, the trial aims to control airway inflammation and symptoms such as wheezing, with reduced reliance on inhaled preventers and other medications, by examining different dosage levels and dietary intervention timing. “This study is vital because it will give us the information that we need to develop this natural therapy into a recommended asthma treatment,” lead researcher, Professor Lisa Wood, from the Hunter Medical Research Institute’s VIVA program, says. In their initial study, published in 2017, the researchers showed

a single daily dose of soluble fibre (inulin) led to changes in the gut microbiome and an increase in beneficial bacteria that can suppress an overactive immune system. “When we consume soluble fibre, the healthy bacteria in our gut breaks fibre down to create compounds that travel into the bloodstream and have antiinflammatory benefits throughout the body,” Professor Wood explains. “People with poorly-controlled asthma gain the most benefit.” The study is open to nonsmoking adults with asthma, unless pregnant or breastfeeding. It takes 16 weeks to complete and involves periodic visits to the HMRI building for medical assessment. news Superheroes complete special mission for kids Superheroes are normally busy fighting crime and corruption. But the likes of Batman, Captain America, Spiderman and Wonder Woman completed a special mission at John Hunter Children’s Hospital last week. The foursome were part of Hunter Heroes – a small group of volunteers that joined forces over a shared love of characters from popular culture. They decided their passion could make a positive contribution to the community and brighten the lives of children in need. Bernie Viemeier, also known as Captain America on the day, said Hunter Heroes appeared at the hospital as ambassadors for a charity called Supertee. “They [make] specially-designed shirts to help sick children – not just

those with cancer, but kids with any kind of illness,” he said. “[The event] was all about us going to the hospital to hand out the shirts, as well as to offer costumed heroes and see some of the kids – they were pretty chuffed that Batman took the time to come and visit them. “Hunter Heroes is a group of friends who are into the hobby of cosplay. We decided to do something rather than keep the hobby to ourselves. “We’re volunteers who offer up our services to good causes, such as any kind of charity or hospital.” Sydney-based organisation, Supertee, distributes the Superherostyle medical garments. It aims to empower little heroes, fighting their own battles, to grow the courage to win.

The charity was created when co-founder Jason Sotiris sat beside his one-year-old daughter’s bed as she battled a rare cancer called Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Mr Sotiris’ son, aged three, provided the inspiration by dressing up as Batman and announcing he

An $8 million asphalt plant in Teralba will pave the way for soft plastics and other recycled material to be used in local road construction. Once up and running, the plant will create new avenues to recycle and repurpose waste materials such as soft plastics from plastic bags and packaging, glass, and toner from used printer cartridges. The plant is expected to produce up to 160,000 tonnes a year, depending on demand. Lake Macquarie council’s manager of sustainability, Alice Howe, said all of the asphalt produced at the plant would be used in Lake Macquarie and neighbouring local government areas. Asphalt made partly of recycled plastic bags has already been successfully trialled in Sydney and Victoria, but it is yet to be widely used.

An historic snapshot If you’re shopping or lunching in Lambton’s main street over the coming months, you might notice some historical photographs in the shop windows. Lambton Residents Group has spearheaded a community project, funded by a Newcastle council Place Making Grant, to celebrate 150 years of trading in Elder Street. Photographs have been placed in most shop windows, together with colour sketches and paintings of Lambton’s historical icons. Most of the photos were taken by Ralph Snowball, a professional photographer who travelled around Newcastle from his home in New Lambton by horse and cart. His photos chronicle Newcastle from the late 1800s to the 20th Century. The photos will be displayed for the next six months, until the end of summer. Together with a booklet that the residents’ group has produced, locals and visitors alike can learn about the town’s history. The only hotel still trading in Elder Street is the Northumberland

Hotel. It opened in 1866 and continues to trade from the original site under its original name. The building, however, was demolished around 1930. The oldest building is the stone terrace next to the hotel. This structure was initially used as the accommodation annex to the hotel and was built around 1867 from hand-hewn stone blocks. T M Mullen opened a boot factory there in 1873. Several family businesses have operated in Elder Street for long periods of time, including the butcher shop, owned by the Payne family, which traded for more than 120 years. The oldest family business still operating today is Simpson’s Shoes, which opened in 1930. Lambton Residents Group’s free booklet is available from coffee shops and other major businesses in the street, as well as Lambton, New Lambton and Wallsend libraries. Maitland Indoor Pool will temporarily close for maintenance from Sunday 23 September to Friday 12 October. The pool’s entry ramp requires repair, which means the pool itself needs to be emptied before work can be carried out. There will be no learn to swim or aqua programs running during the maintenance period. The council’s manager of

community and recreation, Laurie D’Angelo, apologised for any inconvenience but said the closure was necessary to ensure the pool remained the top-class facility it had already proved to be. For those still keen for a swim, Maitland Outdoor Pool will open on Saturday 22 September, while East Maitland Pool will open on Saturday 13 October.

cover story Thirty years of spruiking sun safety A well-known Hunter not-for-profit is celebrating 30 years of being at the forefront of melanoma research, education and awareness. The Hunter Melanoma Foundation, based at the Calvary Mater Hospital’s Mater Institute, is the only melanoma unit located outside of a capital city. Its need became apparent in the 1970s, when our beachside city was considered a melanoma hotspot. The Newcastle Melanoma Unit was established at Wallsend hospital in 1981, where conditions were basic. One of the melanoma patients, John Stevenson, decided the only way to improve conditions was to form a charity and raise money. His idea gained strong support at a meeting in 1986, and, two years later, the Hunter Melanoma Foundation became a registered charity.

Foundation members actively raised funds during two NBN Telethons in 1989 and 1991, which primarily funded the Mater Institute – a state-of-the-art clinic, to which the foundation moved in 2001. If anyone can attest to the clinic’s impact, it’s Hunter Melanoma Foundation chairman Lawrie Hogg, who lost both of his parents to melanoma. “I spent a lot of time going to the clinic with mum and dad, so I got to see it firsthand,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “They really inspired me to get involved [with the foundation].” Lawrie himself developed melanoma in 2008, as did his brother, Tony, in 2010, but both discovered the disease early enough for effective treatment. But few know the inside workings of the foundation as well as stalwart

Jenny Noblet, who’s notched an impressive 25 years’ service. Jenny reflected on the improvements to melanoma treatment she had seen over the years. “Treatment has come a long way in the past 10 years especially; the outcomes are a lot better for people with metastatic diseases,” she said. Jenny added a lot of the foundation’s work, since the melanoma unit was established, focused on education and awareness, as well as funding research through PhD scholarships. “People should not die from melanoma; it is so preventable. “That’s why spreading awareness is so important, and it’s great to know we’ve been a part of that in some way.” The non-government-funded Hunter Melanoma Foundation will

The event, which was hosted by the Rotary Club of Belmont, attracted nominations from the community and officers themselves. Superintendent Danny Sullivan said it was a humbling experience. â€œThe NSW Police Force and Rotary share a really strong bond,â€? he said. â€œCops donâ€™t do police work to get a prize, but itâ€™s great to stop and reflect on the work that we do. â€œItâ€™s all the more humbling when a group such as Rotary, which does outstanding work in the community, comes forward with recognition.â€? One of the winners, Senior Constable Thompson, was the driving force behind a program designed to target young Aboriginal boys and girls who were identified as future leaders within the community. She was instrumental in planning and organising the Tunbilliko (meaning exchange) program, in which five boys from both the Lake Macquarie and Central Northern (Bourke and Brewarrina) police districts meet for a week. The initiative has since expanded to include girls through Wungkun Nubulan, meaning little sisters learning together. More than 60 Aboriginal boys and girls have participated in this program over the past four years. Apart from the awards night, the Rotary Club of Belmont delivers a number of other services. The club will raise funds during a barbecue at Bunnings Belmont on Sunday 21 October, while

Building towards a cancer-free future A gold brick on the letterbox reads: ‘This house was built with love.’ As McDonald Jones Homes founder, Bill McDonald, pointed out: “There are not many houses where you can say that”. Volunteers and businesses undertook an extraordinary challenge to finish a property, in The Bower estate at Medowie, in less than a month to raise funds for children’s cancer research. Ambassador Scott Cam, from hit television show The Block, joined Newcastle Knights star Mitchell Pearce and a host of other special guests at the Build for a Cure House Reveal on Sunday. Now in its fourth year, Build for a Cure will auction off the property, worth $650,000, on 21 October, with all proceeds going to the Children’s Cancer Institute. Mr Cam said he was pleased to be a part of the initiative. “[The Children’s Cancer Institute] is the only institute that looks after children’s cancers in the country,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “We’re all aware of how much money these institutions need, so I think it’s a great cause.”

Children’s Cancer Institute deputy director, Professor Murray Norris, also touched on the project’s significance. He said it was “special” that so many people had volunteered their time and skills to deliver the house on schedule. “More than 950 children and adolescents are diagnosed [with cancer] each year in this country; that includes 50 from this area,” Mr Norris said. “We have come a long way – cancer used to be a death sentence, where no child would survive, and today, 80% of children are completely cured of their disease. “That’s a great result, but there are still three children dying every week in this country from cancer, so we have to do more and that’s what this is about.” Mr Norris added a Zero Childhood Cancer program, led by the Children’s Cancer Institute and the Kids Cancer Centre in Sydney, would be revolutionary. It brings together major Australian clinical and research groups to offer the country’s first personalised medicine program for children with

high-risk or relapsed cancer. “The program uses genetics and gene sequencing to identify specific molecular targets within these cancers that are specific to that child,” Mr Norris said. “We need to personalise the treatment that we give to these children because no two children and no two cancers are the same.” Build for a Cure was completed through a range of partners, including: McDonald Jones Homes, McCloy Group, Austral Bricks, Freedom, Fisher & Paykel, PRDNationwide, the John Hunter Children’s Hospital, hundreds of local tradespeople, and the Rotary Club of Kurri Kurri. - Ben Murphy

More than 20 determined cyclists covered a gruelling 538 kilometres in the 2018 Northern NSW Ride for Sick Kids. Saddling up in support of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Northern NSW, together the convoy raised more than $144,000 – and counting – to help families with a sick or injured child. The riders started their journey at Grafton and finished at The Queens Wharf Hotel in Newcastle five days later, on Saturday 15 September. Ronald McDonald Houses provide a ‘home away from home’ for families with children undergoing hospital treatment, allowing them to stay close by. Last year, houses across Northern NSW provided more than 15,900 nights of accommodation to more than 690 families. There’s still time to donate to the campaign. sport A century of saving lives Hunter surf lifesaving clubs have saved countless lives over the past century. From floods in Maitland, to the Pasha Bulker storm, volunteers stood tall during the region’s major rescue events. Now, a flag-raising ceremony at Nobbys Beach on Saturday 29 September will celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Hunter Branch’s formation, as well as the centenary of the Armistice. At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, fit, young surf lifesavers not only patrolled the beaches – more than two-thirds also went on to serve their country. During the hostilities, the iconic red and yellow flag was a symbol of relative safe position on land, while it was also used to signify a man overboard. Fitting then, that it was adopted as the sign of safety and action on Australian beaches. Once the conflict ended, large numbers of men, weary and traumatised from four years’ service, returned to the region and its beaches. The 1920s and early 1930s saw enthusiasm for surf lifesaving grow, with the formation of

Nobbys, Catherine Hill Bay, Swansea Belmont, Caves Beach, and Dixon Park. They joined the already-active Newcastle, Merewether, Redhead and Cooks Hill clubs. The men, particularly those who had returned from war service, viewed competition as discipline and preparation for the duties they were expected to perform in keeping the beaches safe from fatalities. Their commitment led to further expansion, with clubs established at Fingal Bay, Tea Gardens-Hawks Nest and Birubi in the latter half of the 20th Century as population numbers flourished post-World War II in Port Stephens. Today, the Hunter Branch unites 13 clubs under one sustainable group of disciplined, dedicated, volunteer surf lifesavers, who are committed to the safety of the local community. Hunter Surf Lifesaving chief executive, Rhonda Scruton, said the special ceremony would recognise 100 years of proud service. “We have been instrumental in major rescue events throughout the region, including the Maitland floods and Pasha Bulker [storm], the

formation of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, and the development and training of thousands of junior youth and senior lifesavers,” she said. “The ‘Red and Yellow Army’ stands strong as friends and good community people, caring for each other and the bathing public. “This is why they are iconic; they are great Australians, they make strong communities, and they save lives – all for free.” The ceremony will start at 9am. The Last Post will be sounded by Lisa Thomas – the great niece of William ‘Snowy’ Carratt. Mr Carratt, a member of Cooks Hill Surf Club, was killed by machine gun fire in France in 1918 while tending to the wounds of his mate. - Ben Murphy

Blueberry & chia breakfast pudding Recipe courtesy of Australian Blueberries [australianblueberries.com.au] Serves: 2 Chia pudding 1¼ cups (310ml) milk 1 tsp honey 4 cardamom pods, split 1/3 cup (40g) chia seeds 1 Tbsp finely chopped pistachios Blueberry, vanilla and rosewater jam 2 x 125g punnets blueberries 2 tsp honey, plus extra to drizzle (optional) 1½ tsp rosewater ½ vanilla bean, seeds scraped

To make the blueberry jam, combine the blueberries, honey, rosewater and vanilla in a small saucepan. Set over low heat and gently simmer for 5-10 minutes, until the blueberries soften and begin to collapse to make a chunky jam. Set aside to cool. Meanwhile, prepare the chia pudding by heating milk, honey and cardamom together in a small saucepan over low-medium heat for 3-4 minutes or until it reaches scalding point. Set aside to infuse for 10 minutes. Strain the milk into a medium bowl, add the chia seeds and stir to combine. Set aside for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally to break up any lumps, until the seeds absorb the liquid and swell to make a thick pudding consistency.

Add the pistachios and stir to combine. To assemble, place a large spoonful of the jam into the base of two serving glasses or bowls. Cover with the chia pudding and spoon over the remaining jam. Top with a dollop of yoghurt and sprinkle with pistachios. Drizzle with honey for additional sweetness if desired.

Serves: 2

Finely chop the garlic. In a medium bowl, place the garlic, beef strips, soy sauce and honey. Toss to coat and set aside to marinate. While the beef is marinating, thinly slice the red onion. In a small bowl, combine the onion, vinegar, water, salt and sugar. Stir to coat the onion in the liquid and set aside until just before serving. While the onion is pickling, grate the carrot (unpeeled). Shred the cos lettuce. Thinly slice the long red chilli (if using). In a second medium bowl, combine the carrot, lettuce and chilli (if using). Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a medium frying pan over a high heat. Once hot, add half the beef strips and cook, tossing, for 1-2 minutes, or until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate and repeat with the remaining beef strips. While the beef is cooking, heat the mini flour tortillas in a sandwich press or on a plate in the microwave for 10 second bursts, or until warmed through. Just before serving, drain the liquid from the pickled onions. Top the tortillas with the salad, the Korean beef and the quick pickled onions. Add a dollop of garlic aioli and a sprinkle of the crispy shallots.

Posthumous release does mate’s music justice A group of musicians have helped realise a studio album that never came to fruition after their mate’s tragic death. It’s been an eight-year labour of love for local men Stephen Askew and Adam Schilli, who have painstakingly remastered 10 songs from demos and other recordings, performed by Newcastle-born Simon Lambert. Lambert died when he fell off a balcony in Sydney in 2009. He was due to record his debut album the following week. Lambert is remembered as a prolific songwriter and a perfectionist, having played in many

bands, including Bola, Bolzy, Jimmy Nolan, Old Sound Central, Red Drink and Day After Midnight – the band he started just before he died. Now, with support from Lambert’s friends and family, crowdfunding, and digging into their own pockets, Askew and Schilli have brought his album – titled Still Around – to life. Lambert reportedly wrote the titular track about his concern for his mum living alone with her two boys having moved out of home. He wrote it six months before he died, and, apparently, it was one of his favourite songs. “We thought it should be the

album’s title track because it is about family and he is still around us, and his music is now still around for others to enjoy,” Schilli said. Askew, who is also Lambert’s cousin, said they could feel Simon’s presence when they were recreating the album. “It has been hard to complete but we hope we have done his talent justice,” Askew said. “Simon was such a talent, his songs have to be heard. “It also helps give us and those close to him some closure.” Askew and Schilli will join friends Andrew Carty, Ben Russell and Simon Hill – all of whom played with Lambert and helped re-record music for Still Around – in performing the album live at Newcastle’s 48 Watt St on Saturday 22 December from 7pm. time out New path for beloved gallery Hamilton’s Gallery 139 is about to enter a new era. With its lease at 139A Beaumont Street set to expire in January, owner and director Ahn Wells is embracing new opportunities to showcase Newcastle’s art. Unwilling to commit to another four-year lease, from next year, Wells will instead curate pop-ups around Newcastle and Sydney. “In a way, it has come as a bit of a surprise to myself and probably a lot of people, but I love change; it’s exciting,” Wells told Newcastle Weekly. Her long-term plan is to eventually find another local gallery space, but for now, she believes there’s much work to be done in helping to promote Novocastrian artists outside of the region. “I’ve always been interested in trying to get Newcastle artists to have sustainable careers,” she said. “Part of that involves travelling outside of Newcastle to exhibit works.” Gallery 139’s next photographic exhibition, WE, curated by Clare Weeks, is on display from today (Thursday 20 September) to Sunday 7 October. They’re a tactile match made in heaven. Jewellery-makers Barbara Nanshe (Barbara Nanshe Studio) and Vanessa Day (Urban Smith) share a shop space in The City Arcade on Hunter Street, Newcastle. Nanshe is a self-professed bower bird, taking great pleasure in seeking out unique, vintage pieces to work with on her worldly travels. “I’m always looking for that stuff under the counter that’s been stashed away because it’s not ‘in’ anymore,” Nanshe says. Astute readers might remember Newcastle Weekly spoke with Nanshe in 2016, when she shifted from her Hamilton art gallery to The Emporium in the Hunter Street Mall. It was commercial development that prompted her move to The City Arcade last November, where she continues to focus on making eclectic earrings, necklaces, bracelets and the like, as well as sculptures. Both Nanshe and Day work with mostly recycled materials to reduce environmental impact. For Day, it’s all about getting hands-on with fire and hammers, forging one-of-a-kind pieces from metal. “I love casting from natural materials like gumnuts and seeds; I like to let natural forms guide my work,” she says. Day also offers jewellery repairs and remodelling. With a plethora of expertise between them, the pair say they are a “match made in heaven”.

Radio-controlled planes, quadcopters and drones – all three are sent into the sky when members of the Lake Macquarie Miniature Aircraft Club gather at Teralba. The club, whose members range in age from 14 to 80, aims to safely promote, construct, and fly model aircraft. Club president Andrew Bodie says it’s an opportunity for young and old to learn an everchanging, and pleasurable, pastime. “It is a great way to get away from it all and enjoy the company of like-minded people,” he says. “Members fly gliders, quadcopters and drones and we’ll be introducing control line aircraft soon; we also have the odd dog fight [aerial battle] too. “The club has been around for a long time, but member numbers have dropped because some have moved away from the area or have passed away. “We have had some new members join this year, but we always have room for more.” The club promotes that model aircraft are not toys and require considerable skills in handicraft, engineering and a knowledge of aerodynamics before an aspiring modeller can build, maintain and fly such a model.

My favourite things SUICIDE PREVENTION I have the pleasure and privilege to work locally and nationally in suicide prevention and it has become a lifelong passion of mine. Based here in Newcastle, it is incredibly rewarding to be able to lead the sector in work that is changing lives due to our amazing team, such as the recent launch of the National Communications Charter, which is hosted on the Life in Mind gateway.

SOCIAL MEDIA Twitter is an absolute guilty pleasure of mine, which I indulge in for both work and as a pastime. I really enjoy engaging, connecting and talking with like-minded and dissimilarminded people on a range of topics, from suicide prevention and mental health, through to a whole range of other topics.

POETRY & LITERATURE When I get the chance, I love to re-read works from The Romantics period of literature, especially French and English poetry. Particular favourites are the works of the likes of Oscar Wilde and ThĂŠophile Gautier.

Marc is the program manager for the Suicide Prevention team at Everymind and leads the national delivery of a range of suicide prevention initiatives, including Mindframe and Life in Mind. Joining Everymind nearly 10 years ago, Marc is a guiding force within suicide prevention and oversaw the recent development, delivery and launch of Life in Mind, a national suicide prevention digital gateway and platform, which connects organisations and communities to information, activities, resources and research. Marc is incredibly passionate about the suicide prevention and mental health sectors, particularly in encouraging behavioural change towards help-seeking and reducing the level of stigma associated with both areas. 70

MUSIC As a British citizen, I have an excellence knowledge and grounding *ahem* in pop music, but also have an extensive appreciation of music in all forms and love supporting local talent here in Newcastle. A particular highlight is being able to support my partner and local musician, Amy Vee, during her local live performances and watch her latest works, in the form of a recent single release, come to fruition.

FAMILY My family life keeps me grounded and busy with the challenge and rewards related to supporting two little nippers, who are one and four, through to my 16-year-old son, who is entering his final year of high school, and my 22-year-old daughter, who is in her penultimate year of university.
