This week... From the editor It would be remiss of me if I didn’t let you in on perhaps the greatest thing to happen to me so far… I bought a house! Yep, I’m shouting it from the rooftops. I’ll admit, my partner, Luke, and I were ill-prepared for all the emotional highs and lows, anticipation and utter exhaustion this journey would bring, but the wait was worth it. Buying a house is not for the fainthearted, and our neat three-bedroom brick abode is not our ultimate dream home, but it’s a place to call our own – to paint the walls if we want to – and you can’t put a price tag on that. So, to all the wishful homeowners out there: it is achievable. The Great Australian Dream is alive and well, it just takes a bit of grit and determination to realise it. Now, back to business. You may recognise one of this week’s cover stars as one-third of Hit 106.9’s breakfast radio show, Nick Gill. But what you might not know is that, off-air, he and his wife, Georgette, have been fighting a personal battle. The Gills’ twins, Otis and Harriet, were born in July 2017. Otis was perfectly healthy, while Harriet was diagnosed with severe congential heart disease. She was given just 72 hours to live. Miraculously, Harriet is still with them today, and the family has learned to treat each day as a blessing. That story on page 22. - Georgia Osland

news Charting the course for mental health dialogue A new, national charter aims to “normalise” seeking help for mental illness and improve the way we respond to it in the workplace, government and community sectors. The National Communications Charter: A unified approach to mental health and suicide, launched in the lead-up to R U OK? Day today (Thursday 13 September). It’s developed and managed by Newcastle-based not-for-profit, Everymind. Director Jaelea Skehan says it is important for the mental health and suicide prevention sector to lead by example and show Australians how to start the conversation. “What we say and how we say it matters,” she says. “It’s all very well and good to talk safely about mental health and

suicide in front of the media and cameras, but what we say in private matters just as much as what we say in public. “We all have a part to play by creating safe spaces for people with lived experience to share their stories, because we know that people living with mental illness can still be shunned in their workplaces, talked down to from our own services, or excluded from their community.” In practical terms, organisations that sign up to the charter, which can be found on the Life in Mind Australia website, will receive information and resources to educate and promote the use of safe language. Examples include training staff through online modules and organising or encouraging

participation in programs and initiatives such as R U OK? Day. Ms Skehan says this is just the beginning of a national movement; one that will continue to evolve over time. Federal health minister Greg Hunt, who officially launched the charter, added that it would help “normalise help-seeking behaviour”. “The charter aims to build the capacity of all sectors and people to play a role in the promotion of

news Air show set for take-off The scenic Hunter Valley will serve as the backdrop for a major aviation event when it lands at Cessnock Airport for the first time. AirVenture Australia 2018 is set to attract thousands of people to the region from Thursday 20 to Saturday 22 September. It will feature educational seminars, trade displays, a wide range of exhibitors and a spectacular two-hour air show. Event ambassador Matt Hall, jet fighter pilot Mark Pracy and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) are among an impressive line-up. A Girls in Aviation Day will also take place on the Saturday in a bid to inspire young girls to explore the world of aviation and aerospace. One business, based at Cessnock Airport, believes the event will provide a boost for local tourism and operators.

Hunter Valley Vintage Wings owner Ben Merkenhof said he was pleased a “community asset” would be promoted. “A lot of people know that [the airport] is there, but think it’s just noise,” he said. “So, it’s good to point out the benefits in terms of tourism and that firefighting aircraft will be stationed there over the coming months as well. “Events like this will help to highlight the airport as a place to go and should bring more people to the area.” Cessnock council voted to support the event, which was previously held in Narromine, earlier this year through $75,000 in sponsorship. Mayor Bob Pynsent said the council was always eager to attract more events to the region.

news Council gets down to business on creek The Mount Hutton and Windale communities are celebrating a hard-fought win, with news of rehabilitation works to start at Scrubby Creek. Lake Macquarie council confirmed a degraded section of the creek, which runs behind Lake Macquarie Fair shopping centre, would “shortly” be remediated. As previously reported by Newcastle Weekly, the creek has idled in a state of disrepair for years, choked with rubbish and flooding during times of moderate to heavy rain, causing distress to nearby residents. A council spokesperson said Scrubby Creek was “one of the more degraded waterways in the city”, and had suffered from sediment build-up, reducing the stream’s capacity. “The degraded nature of this section of Scrubby Creek has been an issue for local residents for many years,” the council spokesperson said. “Various studies, assessments, plans and designs have taken place. “The works will restore capacity in the creek channel, improve the local environment, and

improve the amenity and usability of the area.” The council has contracted the NSW Soil Conservation Service to “recreate” and fortify the section in question, between the shopping centre and Tomaree Way. Mount Hutton Windale Residents Action Group secretary Ray Hinton estimates it covers 200 metres of the several-kilometre-long creek, and, while it doesn’t address the whole problem, he says it’s a great start, after two-and-a-half years of lobbying for action. “It’s the best news we’ve had in a while,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “It’ll make a huge difference to localised flooding.” Perhaps the biggest coup, in Mr Hinton’s eyes, is the resolution of a land ownership tussle between the council and the NSW Land and Housing Corporation, which stalled the rehabilitation works. The project required funding to be secured and agreements negotiated, as the project extends across council and housing corporation land.

news Council dives into baths work A long-awaited revamp of the Belmont Baths will swing into gear next week. The new facility, which includes a 70-metre jetty and 45-metre wide enclosure, is expected to be completed over summer. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said work would begin on Monday 17 September. “The community has been looking forward to these revamped baths since the jetty was damaged beyond repair in the 2015 super storm,” she said. “The new jetty, accessible ramp and the main swimming enclosure are all expected to be open by late December, with a second stage of works completed in early 2019. “The lake is our jewel and our major recreational asset, so we want people to use it. “Our priority is to create a safe area that is delivered quickly and encourages people to swim in the lake once again.” The second stage of works will include the construction of a new amenities block with an accessible change room and aquatic wheelchair storage, as well as foreshore landscaping works.

Skate park unveiled

Birmingham Gardens will soon be home to the latest ambulance station in the Hunter Region. NSW Minister for Health, Brad Hazzard, announced last week that land on the Wallsend Community Health Service site, in Nash Street, had been identified as the preferred location for the new station. “This is fantastic news for the local community and will ensure we meet both current and future demand for emergency medical care,” Mr Hazzard said. The purpose-built station is a part of the state government’s $122 million Rural Ambulance Reconfiguration (RAIR) program. Once completed, it will include internal parking for up to six vehicles, administration and office areas, and a multi-purpose room.

Some of Australia’s top skateboarders demonstrated their gravity-defying skills as part of the grand opening of Charlestown Skate Park. The $1 million skate park, on the corner of the Pacific Highway and Frederick Street, was officially opened earlier this month. The site was designed to be used day or night and featured Aboriginal art and a six-metretall art installation. Local skateboarder, Russell Grundy, believed it would cater for a wide range of abilities. “It’s designed so they can progress in a safe manner, with as many options as possible, furthering their skills and having a great time doing so,” he said.

From the city to Coonabarabran: tradies help farmers A bunch of big-hearted tradies and their families have set an ambitious goal to transport $25,000 worth of hay to Upper Hunter farmers in drought. Gary Grant and his wife Julie; David Grant and his wife Jan; Anthony Poile; Isaac Delalande; and Paul Meddows are on a mission. After returning from a trip to Coonabarabran to deliver $5,500 worth of groceries to 10 of the most needy families in the drought-crippled area, Gary said they felt compelled to “do better”. “When we came back, we all decided to do something better,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “One 70-year-old man with about 1,000 acres of land broke my heart. “Once you go out there, you get hooked [on helping]; it’s such a

moving experience.” So, they made an executive decision to order $25,000 worth of hay – enough to fill two semitrailers – from Lower Hunter farmers. Now, they’re seeking the community’s support to help pay for it. They’re under pressure to get the job done in the next two weeks or so. “These people [the farmers] are absolutely desperate – they’re down to the last few days,” Gary said. The group has already raised about $8,000. In the meantime, they’ve been taking trips to Coonabarabran every weekend, for the past four or five weeks, to deliver hand-picked pumpkin and cauliflower kindly donated by an anonymous Lower

End of era as prawner hangs up nets

Geoff Hyde has pretty much seen it all in a lifetime spent on the Hunter River. Ongoing shoulder injuries forced the 82-yearold to hang up the nets this month after almost seven decades of prawning and mullet fishing. He says countless changes, such as industrialisation, development and drought, have taken a toll on commercial fisheries. “More recently, the contamination from chemicals used at Williamtown RAAF Base has been a major issue and closed the fishery for a whole season in 2016-17, leaving myself and other fishers in financial hardship,” he says. “The authorities don’t understand the extent of the impact on fishing families – it’s not just a job, it’s a livelihood.” The current drought has wreaked havoc on the prawn catch, with last season proving to be the worst in Geoff’s working life. “A drought on land is a drought at sea,” he says. “Without environmental flows into the river system to support healthy, productive wetlands, the fish and prawn stocks become greatly depleted.”

Geoff first began prawning with his father, Vic, as a 15-year-old in 1951. A year later, he bought a boat, converted it into a trawler, called The Bev, and started working on his own in the Hunter River. In the early 1960s, Geoff claimed he was the first fisher to find king prawns off Stockton Bight. “It was well-known back then that Hexham Swamp was a healthy, thriving habitat for juvenile king prawns,” he says. “I knew the king prawns would travel from the protected nursery ground out to sea, so I tried a few shots in 40 fathoms [about 72 metres] depth of water and found them in abundance. “The Stockton Bight king prawn fishery has since become a major local resource.” Geoff took his beloved trawler, Hod, for one last trip up the Hunter River with his family on Father’s Day. It will now move to Launceston to be used as a leisure boat by his son, David. A retirement party will take place at Stockton Prawners Club from 12pm on Saturday 6 October to celebrate Geoff’s fishing endeavours. - Ben Murphy

Add to that mix twin toddlers and youâ€™ve got no choice but to keep moving â€“ something Nick and Georgette Gill know all too well. Fourteen months ago, the Tighes Hill couple were expecting only to have 72 precious hours with their daughter, Harriet. At the same time, they were celebrating the birth of their bouncing baby boy, Otis. They were forced to juggle grief and joy, as they prepared to lose one of their twins. Just nine weeks beforehand, Georgetteâ€™s 28-week scan revealed Harriet had severe congenital heart disease. â€œI canâ€™t think of a worse day in my life when we heard the news,â€? Nick told Newcastle Weekly. The pair were told the best they could do was to make Harriet as

comfortable as possible when she was born. That day arrived, and Nick and Georgette arranged for family to visit Harriet and Otis while Harriet was in palliative care at John Hunter Childrenâ€™s Hospital. But Harriet had other plans. Her fighting spirit shone through and she exceeded the expectations of everyone around her. â€œThree days passed, then two weeks passed, and we thought, we might as well go home,â€? Nick said. But it was far from smooth sailing when the family of four returned home. â€œHarry was still sick; before surgery she cried for six months,â€? Georgette revealed. â€œBut she kept on keeping on. We learned to see each day as a blessing and be grateful for the time we had with her.â€?

Said surgery came in January, when Harriet underwent a heart procedure at Westmead childrenâ€™s hospital in Sydney. The family was away from home for two months, during which time they were welcomed with open arms at Ronald McDonald House. â€œBeing around other families with sick children made us feel not so alienated,â€? Georgette said. â€œI donâ€™t think we could have done it without [Ronald McDonald Houseâ€™s] support. â€œThe ability to be by Harrietâ€™s bedside when she was in intensive care and come and go easily was phenomenal, and it allowed us to keep a sense of normality for Oat, who still needed us.â€? These days, Harriet is doing well and is a happy, placid baby, but sheâ€™s not out of the woods. While Nick and Georgette donâ€™t know whatâ€™s around the corner, they try not to let it loom over them. â€œWe donâ€™t know how this story

news Residents make stand on foreshore A crowd of more than 500 people poured into Toronto High School last week to discuss Lake Macquarie council’s proposal for a multi-storey development on the foreshore. In April, the council voted to proceed with a development application for the building on Bath Street, which would consist of residential, tourist and commercial space. Councillor Jason Pauling, who attended the meeting, believed it was well executed, but had a “very clear bias” against the development. He added the project could be world-class if several issues were solved. “It is important for the community to remember that, at this stage, council has only approved the process to develop a development application,” he said. “There are several elements that still need to be addressed, including traffic flow, foreshore access, and the Hunter Water pumping station. “I have made my position on this very clear to staff – if adequate foreshore access cannot be delivered, or the pumping station cannot be addressed, the project will lose my support.

“Personally, I view the current process as council undertaking appropriate due diligence, without which council cannot make a suitably informed decision about whether to progress the Bath Street development proposal or not.” Community members expressed their concerns during the meeting, which was hosted by the Toronto Foreshore Protection Group (TFPG). Some of these included the significance of the foreshore land to the Awabakal people, the need for parking to access the foreshore, and the perception of a flawed consultation process. Questions were posed to councillors and TFPG representatives about the impact on water quality and the lake’s ecosystem, as well as whether the group was anti-progress and possible effects on the nearby Royal Motor Yacht Club. The meeting, ultimately, urged Lake Macquarie council to abandon the development, add the Bath Street site to the Toronto Foreshore Master Plan as an integral part of the foreshore park, and called for the area to be rezoned and reclassified as community parkland. “We are advocating for a community space that

provides recreational opportunities, access to the lake, physically and visually, and maintains the heritage values of the area and the health of the lake,” TFPG member Jeff Jansson said. The group made a commitment to present councillors with a petition that contained more than 3,500 signatures.

news Kits serve up a healthier option It’s a healthy alternative to chocolate or other junk food fundraisers. Schools and community groups can now benefit from Coffee Mushroom Kits. The kits are the latest offering from Bean Cycled, which grows oyster mushrooms in a special facility at Charlestown Square using grounds from coffee retailers within the centre. Co-founder Leisha Parkinson said the kits were practical, educational and easy to use. “Stockton and Broke public schools and Kotara Scouts have used the kits for fundraising – Scouts can potentially earn a gardening or agriculture badge from using [them],” she said. “The kits are also perfect for sporting clubs, dance groups or service clubs. “Oyster mushrooms are a superfood that are nutrient-rich, high in protein, and have a great nutty taste – perfect for eating on their own or for use in stews, soups, stir-fry [dishes], and sauces.” The kits cost $25 each, with $6 going towards the fundraising organisation. Ms Parkinson established Bean Cycled in 2017.

Ponga recognised for stellar season Prodigious talent Kalyn Ponga has been rewarded for a stellar debut season with the Newcastle Knights. The 20-year-old fullback turned five-eighth claimed the Danny Buderus Medal for Player of the Year at the club’s awards night after a campaign in which he scored six tries, booted 27 goals, and thrilled fans with his footwork and passing range. Previous winners include Mitch Barnett in 2017, Dane Gagai in 2016, Kurt Gidley in 2015, and Beau Scott in 2014. Ponga also picked up the Players’ Player of the Year and the Community Player of the Year gongs. Other NRL award winners on the night were Nick Meaney (Rookie of the Year), Aidan Guerra (Coaches Award and Gladiator of the Year), and Club Person of the Year (John Thomas). The club also farewelled its departing players, which included retirees Jacob Lillyman and Chris Heighington, as well as Jack Cogger, Nick Meaney, Brock Lamb, and Pat Mata’utia.

Goalkeepers lauded Two Newcastle goalkeepers were acknowledged with special awards from the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy tournaments. The 40th finals series in the Cup, for high school boys aged 15 and under, and 28th version of the Trophy, for girls, took place at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility last week. Newcastle High School was knocked out in the semi-finals of the Cup by eventual champions Westfields Sports, going down 3-0. In the final four of the Trophy competition, Hunter Sports High drew 1-all with Westfields Sports, but went on to suffer a 4-2 loss in a penalty shootout. During the subsequent presentation, Newcastle High gloveman Dimitri Filactos and Hunter Sports High shot-stopper Tiahna Robertson won Spirit of Football awards. Some of the characteristics that a nominee may demonstrate include: sportsmanship and fair play; treating the opposition and match officials with respect; placing team performance before personal success; and community involvement. This year’s Bill Turner Cup and Trophy attracted 450 boys’ sides and 400 girls’ teams from across Queensland, NSW, Victoria and the ACT.

Increasing taste for zero waste Following on from Plastic Free July, The Source Bulk Foods store in Newcastle is promoting initiatives to help locals learn more about zero waste. Its campaign is timely: China’s ban on recyclable materials from Australia, earlier this year, has left the country in what some are calling a “waste crisis”. Reducing waste starts at home. The Source Bulk Foods cofounder Paul Medeiros is proud of communities’ efforts to reduce waste, and hopes more people will be inspired to start their own zerowaste journey through simple steps such as buying in bulk without plastic packaging. “Buying food in bulk is a simple way you can start to reduce the amount of waste your household produces,” he says. “By adopting even a few zerowaste principles, everyone can do

something about the amount of rubbish going to landfill. “We can even reduce carbon emissions by having an impact on how much waste is produced in the first place. “Our message is that no one person has to do everything – the zero-waste movement is about a thousand people doing a thousand small things together to make a difference.” As part of its educational campaign, the Newcastle store hosted Zero Waste Home author Bea Johnson in July. Pioneering the war on waste since before it was trendy, Lake Macquarie council’s annual Living Smart Festival returns to Speers Point Park on Saturday 22 September. The lake’s largest sustainability event, the Living Smart Festival, explores how residents can adopt eco-friendly practices in everyday life. It features cooking and gardening demonstrations, popup fashion events, a free outdoor yoga class, tiny house displays, and workshops, and runs concurrently with the Lake Macquarie City Farmers Markets. This year, War on Waste presenter Craig Reucassel will

headline the festival in a coup for the flagship event. The founding member of satirical group, The Chaser, won a Logie Award for last year’s groundbreaking, three-part War on Waste series, which prompted nationwide action to reduce reliance on plastic bags, disposable coffee cups and other single-use plastics. Reucassel will give two presentations at the festival. “I would love people to leave with ideas about how they can reduce their waste and further protect the Lake Macquarie environment,” he said. “It’s always inspirational to find out what people are doing to solve problems like waste in their area.

Even youngsters can get hands-on at Lake Macquarie’s Living Smart Festival.

“So many of us are starting to realise the effect that our lifestyles have on the planet and want to find solutions.” In a festival first, stallholders will not sell bottled water or supply plastic bags or straws. The council’s manager of sustainability, Alice Howe, said the event was committed to “walking the walk” when it came to waste and sustainability.

“We aim to demonstrate sustainability in every aspect of the event and will be encouraging stallholders and event partners to be sustainable in their practices.” Last year’s festival drew more than 20,000 people to the park and 200-plus stallholders. Stage set for comedy first It promises to be the best comedy line-up Newcastle has ever seen. Organiser Andrew Milos has set the wheels in motion for an inaugural Newcastle Comedy Festival from 25 to 27 May next year. Milos said he was in the process of booking high-quality acts who could follow on from the annual comedy festivals in Melbourne and Sydney. “There’s never been a comedy festival in Newcastle – nothing on this scale, anyway,” he said. “Sydney and Melbourne have their own and we need to do more grassroots work here. “I’m booking acts at the moment – they’ll be red-hot shows from seasoned professionals and Newcastle will be the last on the circuit. “I’ve locked in the venues – we’ll utilise various ones around

town, including the Newcastle train station, The Happy Wombat, 5 Sawyers, the Family Hotel and then, depending on international acts, possibly the Civic Theatre. “The goal for this festival is to put on the best comedy shows possible and showcase this beautiful city.” Newcastle council provided a $15,000 grant to help kick-start the event. Milos, who launched his own club, Big Dog Comedy, in January 2017, was emboldened by the community’s response since those early days. After originally starting as a podcast, it has managed to attract well-known comedians such as Wil Anderson, Rove McManus, Aaron Gocs, Julia Wilson, Neel Kolhatkar, and Los Angeles-based funnyman Al Del Bene. “I’ve recently branched out,

Wetlands walk for a worthy cause When Joan Kempton suffered a stroke in mid2016, she rebuilt her life through the Hunter Wetlands Centre. After leaving the Hunter Valley Private Hospital, Joan turned to the natural tranquility inside the wetlands. The sights, sounds and movement of the birdlife provided her with a focal point for her overall recovery. Joan’s son, Mark, was inspired by both his mother’s journey and the story of change that unfolds daily at the centre. “After watching my mother’s journey of recovery, I am passionate about both stroke awareness and the powerful, peaceful beauty of the wetlands,” Mark says. “The seclusion of the Hunter Valley Private Hospital, as its staff work quietly in the role of human restoration, mirrors perfectly the seclusion of the wetlands, where the beauty of the natural environment brings peace to the soul.” As a lead volunteer, Mark went on to organise a partnership between the wetlands and Hunter Valley Private Hospital. It created an inaugural Walk in the

Wetlands, where every step counts to raise community awareness about stroke. The fundraiser will take participants through the dappled light of rainforests, passing by bird nesting colonies, over the wetlands board walks, and between the whispering stands of casuarinas. There will be three tracks available, catering for everyone, during the event from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday 23 September. One-third of the proceeds from every ticket is going to the Stroke Foundation, with the remainder to assist the wetlands’ maintenance efforts. Mark’s unwavering dedication has also driven him to gather a small, creative team of equally passionate volunteers, who are developing a series of events to lift the profile of the centre. The recent Evolving Wetlands exhibition, which focused on dinosaurs, attracted a record 5,000 people and raised more than $38,000 to support the not-for-profit organisation. Are you bushfire ready? Bushfire season is now in effect statewide, with the NSW Rural Fire Service having fast-tracked the official Bushfire Danger Period by one month due to prolonged weather conditions. Rutherford-based Maximus Industrial Group says now is the time to enact a bushfire survival plan – don’t wait until it’s too late. On days of catastrophic or extreme fire danger, even wellprepared homes may not survive. Leaving early is the safest option under these conditions. If you decide to leave, a suitablyprepared home is more likely to survive a bushfire, is easier to defend and offers better protection

if you are caught at home with no way of leaving. Some homes, due to their location, construction and design, are not safe to defend, Maximus warns. Others are suitable and can be set up with an external sprinkler and fire pump system that can be used for protection when under ember attack. Build your defence around available water supply. This could be a swimming pool, pond, dam, well or tank. Clear ground fuels around the house, for instance, long, dry grass; dead leaves and branches; and thick undergrowth. Take a trip to the tip.

Clear gutters and fit gutter guards, and check that your roof is ember-proof. A well-watered lawn is a firebreak, while fire-resistant plants around your property perimeter will slow down any potential fire. Flammable items should be removed from the house’s perimeter, such as newspapers, boxes, hanging baskets, wooden garden furniture and door mats. It also helps to check the condition of walls and cladding and seal any gaps.

MARTIAL ARTS I started Taekwondo when I was six years old and I haven’t stopped loving martial arts since. I have since achieved my black belt in Karate, ranked as a number one competitor in Australia two years in a row, and successfully competed in a bunch of different arts including Karate, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Sambo.

My favourite things

FITNESS My dad was a body builder when he was in his twenties, and was always supportive about my fitness goals. I love being in the gym; everyone is out to make a better version of themselves.

MUSIC I grew up listening to the classics like AC/DC, Blondie and Cold Chisel, and still love them. When I picked up my first guitar at 12, I had always dreamt of performing on stage. Now that dream is a reality.

Louis Burt MUSICIAN

Louis Burt is a singer/songwriter from the Hunter Valley. He has performed extensively across NSW at pubs, private functions and charity events. Louis is about to record, and hopes to release, his first EP later this year. He’s a primary school teacher and is currently undertaking his doctorate in education. Louis is also an adrenaline junkie who loves anything that goes fast like rollercoasters, snowboards and motorbikes. He loves travelling and hanging out with his friends whenever he can. 66

COFFEE Coffee and salt and vinegar chips are probably my two weaknesses. I have a deep love for them both and can’t imagine my life without them.

EDUCATION I am a qualified primary and early childhood teacher and have worked in both settings. I landed a permanent position, and I’m now a proud member of the fantastic staff at Cessnock Public School. Having said that, I have dropped back to teaching one day a week because I was awarded a scholarship to complete my PhD at the University of Newcastle.
