From the editor National suicide prevention charity R U OK? is in Newcastle until tomorrow (Friday 7 September), as part of a sixweek awareness-raising road trip to regional and remote communities in the lead-up to R U OK? Day on Thursday 13 September. Dubbed the Conversation Convoy, the initiative aims to break down barriers to discussing mental health by encouraging everyone to check in on their friends, family and colleagues. Having battled mental illness personally, at various stages in my life, it’s a topic that hits close to home for me. It is truly astounding, the breadth and depth of what goes on beneath the surface, and how you can never fully understand what others might be going through at any given time. That’s why it is particularly important not to judge or assume. You don’t need to be an expert to have a meaningful, potentially life-saving conversation – just a good friend and a great listener. Tomorrow, the R U OK? team will join ambassador and local radio host, Tanya Hennessy, and Everymind director, Jaelea Skehan, at Newcastle’s Civic Park from 8.30am to 10am to start the conversation. Regal Cinema’s twist in the tale

In a world of Netflix and illegal downloads, Newcastle’s last single-screen cinema remains an “anomaly”. The Regal Cinema is a tale of community triumph against all odds. In 2007, the Birmingham Gardens theatre closed and was earmarked for demolition due to safety concerns. However, an army of volunteers helped save it from almost certain demise after a lengthy campaign. Seven years later, the cinema reopened, and the audience quickly returned. George Merryman, who manages the Regal alongside his partner, Jo Smith, says it has generated a sense of volunteerism and community. “Jo and I thought we were opening a cinema, but a visiting filmmaker stood on stage and looked out at the crowd, with the volunteers serving them Sherry in their seats, and said: ‘This isn’t a cinema, it’s a community centre,’” Mr Merryman tells Newcastle Weekly. “As soon as he said that, it clicked.

“When you go to the Regal, you’re never alone – sessions are often booked out.” Despite its resounding success, a proposed development in Moore Street, where the cinema is located, has formed a cloud over the Regal’s future. The plan aims to make several improvements to the area, including pedestrian access, shared pathways, landscaping, and new street furniture. Mr Merryman says it’s a “beautiful design” but admits there is “one fly in the ointment”. “It would reduce the amount of parking from 38 spaces to 17,” he says. “The cinema wouldn’t be financially viable without parking – on-street parking is at a premium already and there really isn’t any hidden parking. “If it were any other cinema – because often you go and there’s only a handful of people there – it could cope with that loss of parking. Tower’s removal date locked in It’s time to say goodbye to the iconic, yet divisive, Queens Wharf Tower. After three decades, Novocastrians will wake to a noticeable absence on the skyline later this month, with the tower’s removal date now locked in. Mayfield-based contractor, Major Projects Group, successfully tendered for the job. It aims to lower the most prominent parts of the tower with a giant crane before detaching and lowering two sections of the spiralling steel stairwell encasement on the first night of removal work, slated for Monday 17 September. Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the tower was a part of the city’s history but had become outdated. “When the first of a record 20 cruise ships calls [into] the port in October to begin the season, passengers will enjoy an uninterrupted view of the city’s 19th and early 20th Century architectural splendour,” she said. “Removal of the tower, which was originally only intended to stand for two years, will save council and ratepayers around $1.6 million in maintenance costs over the next four years. “While it does have a place in our history, it’s

long been the subject of ridicule and is well outdated in terms of accessibility for those with mobility challenges.” Following its removal, Cr Nelmes said Newcastle council would look to install synthetic grass, coloured rubberised surfaces and raised tree planters with seating to activate the site. “This is a temporary solution for place activation, with an anticipated lifespan of up to five years,” she said. “A permanent solution for the area will be addressed in the master planning for the whole foreshore, which will include community consultation.” Major Projects Group started setting up temporary fencing, pavement protection, hoarding and site accommodation this week. After the first night of work, the group will then remove two more pieces of the tower, the lower roof and the walkway, before the lower deck and remaining section are lifted out early on Friday 21 September. news Care packs a welcome boost for homelessness service REACH Newcastle executive director Gary Parsisson used to be a highranking suit earning a six-figure salary with the Commonwealth Bank. That was until he suffered mental illness and “self-medicated” with poker machines. At rock bottom, Mr Parsisson wound up in rehab at a psychiatric hospital for 10 months. After he was discharged, he began working with the Salvation Army to help people in need – a role he held for eight years. Now, after relocating from Sydney to Newcastle, he works on the ground to address homelessness in the CBD. “It’s very rewarding,” Mr Parsisson told Newcastle Weekly. “I’ve been there, and you just don’t realise how easy it can be for someone to fall into [homelessness].”

REACH Newcastle stations its solar-powered trailer, equipped with a barbecue, near the Hamilton clocktower on Beaumont street, every Friday from about 7pm until late. There, volunteers cook meals, offer a listening ear, provide free general check-ups by a nurse, and distribute food packs and blankets to those doing it tough. It’s Mr Parsisson’s role, as executive director, to align REACH with as many community organisations as possible. One of the organisations it recently joined forces with is Warners Bay Baptist Church’s Food and Friendship low-cost grocery store. The church ministry assembled 60 care packs, worth a collective $2,000, for REACH to distribute free of charge. They included essentials

like socks, underwear, face washers, toiletries and sanitary items. Mr Parsisson said this was a welcome boost, especially because he’d heard how many people were in desperate need of fresh socks and underwear at the recent Hunter Homeless Connect Day. Food and Friendship is also helping to supply surplus food to REACH via Foodbank. “The guys at Warners Bay have

really helped us out,” Mr Parsisson said. “We don’t have a warehouse space so we’re restricted in how much we can store, and these care packs will go a long way.” To that end, Mr Parsisson said REACH was actively looking for warehouse storage, and encouraged anyone who might be able to help to make contact via reachhomeless.com - Georgia Osland

Unique program for refugee students A unique refugee program in the Hunter Region will empower students so they aren’t “on the back foot” when it comes to education. The Mentor Support Network (MSN)’s pilot program, which starts in 2019, will provide scholarships, professional advice and 13 weeks of one-on-one mentoring to a small group of pupils from refugee backgrounds. The network is a not-for-profit organisation that helps disadvantaged students achieve their educational goals. Program coordinator Jennifer Flinn says MSN’s program is unique because it identifies a student’s strengths, helps them navigate the Australian education landscape, and provides advice on how to pursue a successful career path. “We’re mindful that these aren’t just disadvantaged kids – they come from refugee backgrounds where they have experienced significant trauma and upheaval,” she says. “They’ve had to leave their country and family, so there are particular challenges that might bring for young people who are trying to find their way in a foreign environment. “We want to empower these kids to find

information and support so they aren’t on the back foot when they leave school and want to go on to further studies.” The network received a $30,000 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation to kickstart the program, while Northern Settlement Services also offered its expertise. Ms Flinn, who worked for a number of the country’s top law firms before taking up a role at the University of Newcastle as the head of its legal office, was asked to lend her project management skills towards the program’s design. She hopes to raise MSN’s profile in the region. “My first impression of MSN was that it has a very dedicated team who are passionate about the organisation and what it can offer to disadvantaged, but deserving, students in our region,” she says. “The level of energy, excitement and determination that MSN volunteers put in… they don’t see it as a hobby because they truly believe they are making a positive difference, and they are – I’ve seen it.” The network is recruiting volunteers. (continued from page 4) “But the Regal actually uses all of those spots and then fills up around the area as well.” The community responded to the proposal with a flood of feedback. This included more than 2,000 individual submissions, a petition with about 450 names, and around 180 emails addressed to Newcastle lord mayor, Nuatali Nelmes. Mr Merryman will also speak to Newcastle council about the issue on Tuesday 18 September – a week before councillors vote on the proposal. Both meetings, which start at 5.30pm, are open to the general public. “The council is really happy with the Regal’s success, because it is quite amazing,” Mr Merryman says. “[But] it would be ironic if people are drawn to the area

because of this heritage cinema that’s sitting in the centre and they want to make it a jewel in the crown, but then that jewel won’t be able to exist anymore.” He believes the Regal, which operates on the back of support from about 100 highly-dedicated volunteers, will continue to grow in popularity. “Single-screen cinemas are not the business model – we should’ve gone the way of the movie rental stores,” he says. “The Regal, initially, was saved not just for us, but for the generations beyond. “It’s not just what the cinema is now, it is about what it can become because it will just grow. “Despite Netflix and illegal downloads, people still want to have that communal experience and they get that in spades at the Regal.” - Ben Murphy

Riders peddle a good cause Pint-sized powerhouse Kari Armitage is all for peddling a good cause, especially if it involves pedalling. The active Merewether resident loves to run and swim, but it’s on the bike she feels most at home. So, she couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take part in the 2018 Ride for Sick Kids. Kari joins a pack of dedicated, experienced riders, who will travel 538 kilometres, from Grafton to Newcastle, in five days to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern NSW. It is hoped that, collectively, they will raise more than $200,000 to help keep families close at a ‘home away from home’ when their sick or injured child is receiving hospital treatment. As Quarry Mining’s managing director, Kari will sponsor rider Bernard Corbett for the first four days, before she jumps on her bike to complete the last leg (about 50km) to the finish line at The Queens Wharf Hotel. With a healthy, happy nine-year-old daughter of her own, Kari enters charity cycling events, such as this and Camp Quality’s 1000 K’s 4 Kids, to pay it

forward to other families. “On a bike, you’ve got to get out of your comfort zone and you’re going to hurt somewhere along the way,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. “These kids [the event supports] are also hurting, so you know your pain is for a good cause.” Among Kari’s riding companions are Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW chief executive officer and Ride for Sick Kids veteran, Ross Bingham; much-loved charity auctioneer and former member of The Screaming Jets, Craig ‘Rosie’ Rosevear; and Hadley Cycles’ own Brett Hadley. For Mr Bingham, the motivation is personal, having seen Ronald McDonald House’s impact firsthand. “Over the past two decades, I’ve got to know many families who stayed at the houses while their child received treatment,” he says. “During this time, I’ve heard countless inspirational stories and have seen how valuable the charity’s work has been to the community. “The funds generated from Ride for Sick Kids

Northern NSW will play an instrumental role in helping families stay together in their time of need and ensure the fantastic work of RMHC can continue.” The 2018 Ride for Sick Kids kicks off on Tuesday 11 September and finishes on Saturday 15 September. news Smart bench gives Grant helps council power to the people monitor waterways

Newcastle is set to welcome back the Matildas for a clash against Chile in November. After wowing Novocastrian football fans with a 3-2 win over Brazil almost 12 months ago, the Matildas will now take on another South American side and a fellow 2019 World Cup qualifier. “Almost 15,000 Chileans live in Sydney and we will be working hard to attract them to Newcastle to watch their national team, hopefully with many staying on [here] for a mid-week holiday,” Newcastle lord mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, said. The night-time Test, on Tuesday 13 November, will be the second in a two-match series, following the first in Penrith on Saturday 10 November. Matildas head coach, Alen Stajcic, intends to use the series as part of his team’s preparation for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which kicks off in France in June. “The atmosphere at our matches in Penrith and Newcastle was amazing [last year] and I know that the players are looking forward to running out in front of large, vocal home crowds,” he said.

The council is currently exploring options to further upgrade the bench, which may turn it into a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Matildas primed for clash in Newcastle

Lake Macquarie council has received $180,000 from the state government towards a program to better monitor the condition of local beaches and the lake. The council stated funding would enable it to effectively monitor the physical and ecological condition of key components in Lake Macquarie’s coastal zone, including physical changes to beaches and dunes, the aquatic health of the lake, and the ecological health of foreshore inter-tidal zones. The state government’s Coastal and Estuary Grants Program will fund half of the initiative, with Lake Macquarie council to supply the remainder. Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper welcomed the announcement. “The aim of the lake monitoring program is to assess the waterway’s ecological health at 10 locations throughout the year and report the results to the community in a ‘report card’ format,” he said. The grant is among 19 being made to 16 councils, totalling more than $2.6 million.

School’s reward for healthy stance Students at St Paul’s Primary School Gateshead are enjoying a new menu after being the first Catholic school in the Hunter New England region to meet the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy. The strategy, which classifies food and drink as ‘everyday’ and ‘occasional’, has targeted a ratio of 75% everyday to 25% occasional foods on canteen menus by the end of 2019. It’s a part of NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian’s priority to reduce childhood obesity by 5% by 2025. St Paul’s principal, Greg Cumming, supported the initiative. “The canteen offers an important service and convenience to families,” he said. “It means that students have diverse and nutritious menu options to help fuel learning and growing.” Some of the most popular everyday items so far include butter chicken, frozen watermelon, yoghurt and muesli cups, and 100% sparkling fruit juice. A new adventure mega-playground opened amidst much fanfare at Blackbutt Reserve on Saturday. Rock and stick play spaces, a ropes course, swings, and an adventure tower, complete with bridges, slide and fireman poles, are all part of the 60-metre long play area. The variety of activities and spaces creates nature-based play for toddlers through to tweens. “This adventure playground is the city’s biggest and best and is set to entertain tens of thousands of children in the coming months,” Newcastle lord mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, said. Cr Nelmes said Newcastle council had completed extensive improvements on the Carnley Avenue side of the reserve before turning its attention to Richley Reserve. “With the adventure playground and new amenities, Richley Reserve will now be a major attraction and the perfect location for family outings,” she said. The $2.5 million overhaul also included wider footpaths, shelters, barbecue areas and green space.

Pride, safety and respect. That was the resounding message during consultation over a proposal to spruce up a Rutherford housing complex heavily tagged with illegal graffiti. Not-for-profit community housing provider, Compass Housing, sought feedback on an idea to paint two art murals at its Churchill Crescent site. Tighes Hill-based firm, UP&UP, which stands for ‘Unique People, Unique Promise’, will complete the project. Co-creator Faith Curtis said she was excited about the chance to work with local residents. “We engage people who live in the space to come up with a design and help put paint on the walls because they’re the ones who have to look at it every day,” she said. Community consultation sessions encouraged input from students at Rutherford High School, Telarah Public School, Rutherford Public School, and Churchill Crescent tenants. “Young people all spoke about something to feel proud of, to feel safer, and to show people that it’s good to respect where you live,” Ms

At least one dedicated fenced dog exercise area would be provided in each of Lake Macquarie’s catchments under a draft guide outlining ways to cater for the city’s growing canine population. Lake Macquarie council’s manager of community planning, Andrew Bryant, said about 41% of households in Lake Macquarie owned a dog – significantly above the state average. “That equates to more than 80,000 dogs across the LGA,” he said. “These companion animals are an important part of their families’ lives and we need to provide facilities for them to be exercised freely where possible, practical and safe to do so.” There are currently 30 existing dog exercise areas in Lake Macquarie, including designated beaches and sportsgrounds where dogs are allowed to run free. However, the draft Dogs in Open Space Procedure suggests dog exercise areas should be moved away from sportsgrounds used regularly for training or competition. But, few imagined, from its humble beginnings, that a high school knockout competition for students aged 15 and under could turn into this. The prestigious Bill Turner Cup celebrated its 40th edition this week with a finals series at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility. First contested in 1979, the inaugural winners, Belmont, defeated Whitebridge High School 1-0 in a 34-team tournament. Well-known football identity, Bill Turner, was one of several teachers from the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle regions to help kick-off such a competition. He received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) posthumously in 2013 for his services to football and the community. Billâ€™s son, Lloyd, praised the tournamentâ€™s expansion over the past four decades. This year, 450 boysâ€™ sides entered the Bill Turner Cup, while 400 girlsâ€™ teams took part in the 28th Bill Turner Trophy.

â€œBill was charismatic and got a lot of people on board; he just basically inspired them to be willing to give up their time to organise this,â€? Lloyd said. â€œAnything that gets about 8,000 teenagers running around each year, must be doing something right to make that happen. â€œThe girlsâ€™ competition is significantly larger than the FA Cup for women in the United Kingdom and the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) in the USA. â€œTo have a combined 850 teams is really significant for the players as itâ€™s a real honour for them to do well.â€? In the Bill Turner Cup, Newcastle High School was set to contest one of the semi-finals against favourites Westfield Sports as Newcastle Weekly went to print on Tuesday. Toowoomba Grammar School and Bossley Park clashed in the other fixture. The Bill Turner Trophy semi-finalists included Hunter Sports High School, Westfield Sports, Kelvin Grove State College in Queensland, and Holy Spirit College.

Dragons burn plucky Knights in hard-fought contest Newcastle went down 24-14 to visitors St George Illawarra in the club’s final NRL match of the season on Saturday. A sluggish start saw the Knights trail 2-0 after just six minutes, with the Dragons slotting a penalty kick in front of the sticks. Moments later, halfback Ben Hunt’s grubber was spilled by Newcastle’s Mitch Barnett and Jack De Belin stormed through the middle to score. Pickled watermelon haloumi spelt This is an edited extract from Salad Feasts by Jessica Elliott Dennison, published by Hardie Grant Books, RRP $29.99 and available in stores nationally. Serves: 4

Recipe courtesy of Australian Avocados [www.australianavocados.com.au] Serves: 10 Prep: 10 mins 3 ripe avocados 3 limes Salt and pepper 1 tomato, diced 1/4 brown onion, finely diced 1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves, torn 1 jalapeno pepper, finely diced 1/2 cup frozen peas, thawed and crushed 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, shredded 1 spring onion, sliced Pinch chilli flakes Tortilla chips Extra lime wedges

Prep & cook: 20 mins Bring a large pan of water to the boil and cook the spelt for the time stated on the packet (around 16–18 minutes). Then refresh under cold water, drain and set aside.

350g spelt 3 Tbsp vinegar 1½ Tbsp sugar

Meanwhile, stir the vinegar, sugar and half the salt in a large bowl. Slice the onion into half-moons, as finely as you can, and stir through the vinegar mixture to quickly pickle (this will make the onion turn bright pink).

½ tsp sea salt flakes 1 small red onion, peeled and halved 150g sugar snap peas 6 jarred sundried tomatoes plus 2½ Tbsp infused oil from the jar

Next, fill a frying pan 2cm deep with water. Bring to a rapid boil then blanch the sugar snap peas over a high heat for one minute. Refresh under cold water, drain thoroughly then set aside.

200g radishes, thinly sliced

Wipe out the pan with a few sheets of kitchen paper then heat one tablespoon of the sundried tomato oil over a high heat. Crumble in bite-size chunks of the halloumi (discarding any liquid from the packet) and fry for 3-4 minutes until golden. Set aside.

Chop the watermelon into large chunks (discarding the seeds and skin) and add to the onion pickle.

Place the spelt, pickled onion and watermelon (not the pickling juice), sugar snap peas, remaining tomato oil, radishes, tomatoes, herbs and remaining salt in a large mixing bowl. Squeeze in the lime juice, gently toss with your hands so that everything is evenly distributed then transfer to a platter. Top with the halloumi and dukkah.

To the second avocado, mix through tomato, red onion, coriander and jalapeno pepper. Add lime juice, salt and pepper to taste. Spoon the avocado salsa fresca guacamole into two reserved avocado shells. To the third avocado, mix through crushed peas, mint and spring onion. Stir in lime juice, salt and pepper to taste. Spoon the avocado, pea and mint guacamole into two of the remaining avocado shells and top with a sprinkle of chilli flakes. Serve guacamole-filled shells with tortilla chips and extra lime wedges.

Family fair fun The annual Broke Village Fair and vintage car display returns to McNamara Park on Sunday 9 September, with something in store for everyone. Pilot soars into world record books

Guinness World Records 2019 book, which is released today (Thursday 6 September). “I never intended to go for any records – I was just doing what I loved,” Frawley says. However, after being told he may be in with a shot, curiosity finally got the better of him one rainy weekend. “I was lying on the lounge and thought I’d apply and then, lo and behold, at 60 years and so many days, I became the world’s oldest active fighter pilot,” he says. “I reset it when I turned 65 [and 146 days – current record] and I’ve just reapplied to reset it to 66 and 111 days. “It’s not an ego thing… it’s an honour to be in the Guinness World Records – I didn’t expect it, and it’s just lovely to have something to be proud of in my retirement.” Frawley, who joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1969 as an apprentice technician, went on to serve as an instructor with 76 Squadron. He retired in July after notching up more than 10,000 hours in the sky. Tactics, and his body, had, at long last, caught up with him, but not before he witnessed massive changes within the air force. “The air force was kind of

influenced by the legacy of the Korean War initially with its training regimes,” Frawley says. “That flowed right through to the Mirage [fighter] and then, with the advent of the F/A-18 Hornet, it stepped up from a second to a fourth-generation fighter. “We were forced into adapting, very quickly, the way that we trained our pilots and the tactics we used.” Frawley also noticed a drastic shift in the mindset of his trainees over the years. “There was a noticeable difference from young people who were very patriotic and wanted to do the job, and then we moved into the digital age,” he says. “Kids were really good at all the digital aspects of the aeroplane, but not quite so good at the hand-eye coordination. “So, there was a bit of a shift in how we went about training them to make sure they were a wellrounded graduate.” - Ben Murphy

Dancer dazzles in Las Vegas

Talented dancer Xavier Towers.

Xavier Towers was born to dance. After joining his mother and grandmother’s studio, England Purton Dance Academy, at the age of two, the Warners Bay youngster went on to take classes in tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, lyrical/ contemporary and acro/cheer. Now aged eight, Xavier has returned from the Starpower International Dance Championships in Las Vegas with some impressive silverware. He competed in the seven years advanced division, winning the jazz, lyrical and contemporary sections, and was placed sixth-highest overall scoring solo. The judges then asked him back, along with five other dancers, to challenge for the prestigious title award a few days later. Xavier performed in front of a packed auditorium and was announced as the winner of the Little Mr Starpower. His mother, Simone, said it proved to be an amazing experience. “We were in awe of the talent in America and never expected Xavier to take out the top spot,” she said. “Everyone was so friendly and encouraging over there.

“Xavier got just as loud a cheer as the dancers who were local.” After the championships, Xavier then performed at Universal Studios, Disneyland, as well as Madame Tussauds, and at Santa Monica with other members of the England Purton Dance Academy. The academy, which has studios in Cardiff and Mayfield, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Celebrations will take place at a special concert on Sunday 9 December from 11am at the Griffith Duncan Theatre.

Fit-out reduces footprint In 10 to 12 years, Toronto homeowner Hugh Cross expects his sustainable house fit-out will have paid for itself. “It will be cheaper having done this than not,” he says. He’s referring to the $25,000 he has spent on installing battery-powered solar panels, a heat pump, an energy efficient air conditioner, plantation shutters, and a veggie garden. All of this is packed into a 240-square-metre block. And, you can see it for yourself on Sustainable House Day (Sunday 16 September), when the proud owners of eco-friendly homes around Australia throw open their doors and invite the public in. For Hugh, it all started in October 2015, when he installed the first solar

panels on his garage roof. He’d downsized to the house about two years prior, in search of a more self-sufficient lifestyle. Knowing he wanted to install a new, more insulated roof on his house later, he started with the garage. The house enjoys a sunny northerly aspect, which Hugh wanted to make the most of. He then splurged on a battery to power the solar panels at night. Even with the battery as a back-up, the house doesn’t draw much energy. In fact, the solar panels are so efficient, that, at times, they actually supply energy back to the grid, stabilising it during peak times when everyone else in the street is powering up their homes.

Hugh now has a total of 12 northeast facing solar panels, and seven to the north-west. He says the timber plantation shutters he installed insulate the house well and contribute to passive heating and cooling, helping to keep bills to a minimum. His last energy bill was, in fact, a $20 credit. The most recent part of the project was Hugh’s veggie garden, where his lawn used to be. He was conscious of planting edibles and natives, and used waterwise plants where possible. Hugh believes it’s important

to start the conversation about sustainable living and reducing one’s environmental footprint, through initiatives like Sustainable House Day. “The best way to spread a message is to talk to your neighbour,” he says. “In the end, [sustainable living] makes economic sense. Not only that, you’re helping the planet. Although it doesn’t feel warm enough for spring yet, we tend to concentrate on the garden, which has suffered during winter. In doing so, the houseplants often get overlooked. It is time to adjust watering, cut off dead foliage, turn over the soil’s surface, and top up with a good potting mix or peat moss (which as a natural product that holds moisture and enriches the mix). Most plants have been dormant during winter and should now be stimulated with a foliant fertiliser such as Green Flourish. Hard-leafed plants such as Ficus lyrata (Fiddleleaf Fig) and Madonna Lillies look great when wiped over with a spray of white oil. This serves multiple purposes: it not only shines, but cleans off dust and prevents scale insect attack. It’s time to take a good look at under-performing plants as there are so many varieties available that make a great impact and are hardy as well – the hardiest being Zanzibar Gem. Its long, shiny leaves and bulbous growth actually dislike water, making it a great plant for absentee owners.

The broad-leafed Burgandy Rubber Tree is an excellent performer indoors, and one that loves a polish with white oil. Low-light areas need a selection of a small group of plants, including Parlour Palms, Madonna Lillies, Kentia Palms, Devils Ivy and Syngoniums. Part of the secret to adapting a plant to indoor conditions is to give it light and, most importantly, fresh air. This can be achieved near a doorway that is opened regularly or a window. Succulents and cacti are still popular and they certainly need good light and air. Don’t confuse these plants as succulents require more water than cacti.
