Caves Beach SLSC

Caves Beach SLSC is very grateful for Swansea RSL’s support, which has allowed the club to upgrade and maintain its rescue equipment. The club, as with all surf clubs across Australia, is required to meet strict standards in regard to the quality of safety and rescue equipment made available on the beach. This means that funds need to be raised each year to maintain those standards. It is through the ClubGRANTS NSW process that this can happen. Caves Beach SLSC was founded in 1929. Over these years, many, many hundreds of community members have been trained in the skills of surf lifesaving. With more than 500 members, aged from five to 80-plus years, we collectively contribute over 3,500 hours of beach patrols each season.

Mentor Support Network

Mentor Support Network helps disadvantaged youth achieve their educational goals. We do this in two ways: firstly, by providing educational scholarships and support to students in financial need; and, secondly, by providing training, professional development and networking for mentors in our community. ClubGRANTS funding is used to support the annual scholarships program. During 2018, 26 students from the Hunter Region (including 10 from Lake Macquarie) received scholarships, and we expect about the same number in 2019. Scholarship funds are used for: computers, school uniforms, school fees and learning materials, tutoring and school excursions. From MSN and the students we support, many thanks to Lake Macquarie ClubGRANTS.

Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation

Our Community Place Our Community Place, located in the heart of Boolaroo, is an active neighbourhood centre providing information, services and activities to individuals, children and their families in Boolaroo, Speers Point, and surrounding suburbs. Funded by the Department of Family and Community Services, our vision of promoting empowerment, is presently being achieved by a wide range of programs and partnerships. These include: Women’s Shed on the Lake, Garden Group, Kid’s Garden Club at Boolaroo Public School, Breakfast Clubs at Boolaroo and Speers Point public schools, and the weekly Free Food Program. Running for the past six years, this core program of the centre, run in partnership with Boolaroo Uniting Church and OzHarvest, provides a range of food and groceries to disadvantaged members of the local community, including information and referrals to other services. With the ClubGRANTS NSW funding for 2018-2019, Our Community Place will be able to enhance the Food Program, with an information hub being freely made available on-site. This information hub will provide access to Wi-Fi and a laptop computer for use by the clients. Such readily-available computer access will assist clients to better access other support facilities and services. Often clients are unaware of all the support that is available. Peter Pan Preschool The Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation offers support and practical assistance to those undergoing breast cancer treatment in the Hunter Region. Our comfort packs are provided, free of charge, to anyone undergoing breast surgery – these include a cushion, to provide relief during recovery from surgery; a drainage bag; and information on other services provided by HBCF. To ease the burden on families, and help patients focus on their treatment and recovery, we offer house cleaning and lawn maintenance as well as free transportation to and from treatment and medical appointments through our Supportive Care program. In recent years, we have also introduced a range of survivorship programs. After initial treatment, many cancer patients require ongoing support, both physically and psychologically. We run three programs to help patients: Thrive: Meditation and Mindfulness, Enlive: Empowerment, and Revive: Fitness. All funds raised by the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation stay in the Hunter Region, helping patients focus on getting through their breast cancer treatment.

Peter Pan Preschool is a community-based early childhood service. We cater for children aged three to six years, with priority given to children the year before they attend school and children from low-income families. Due to support from the NSW government and community bodies, we can keep our fees to a minimum. We are fortunate to be able to provide a speech and occupational therapy program at our service that assists children with programs in these areas of development. Through this, we assist children to start formal schooling with the necessary skills. We pride ourselves on taking a holistic approach to teaching and learning. Through relationships with educators, families, children and the community, we gain insight into the children’s strengths and interests to develop a meaningful learning curriculum. This is achieved through play, as play provides opportunities for children to learn as they discover, create, improvise and imagine. Our outdoor play environment provides children with limitless possibilities for learning.

OzHarvest

OzHarvest is the leading food rescue organisation in Australia, collecting quality excess food and delivering directly to more than 1,000 charities across the country. OzHarvest Newcastle delivers an average of 7,000 kilograms of rescued food to over 100 charities supporting the many vulnerable men, women and children across the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock, Maitland and Port Stephens LGAs. Since we commenced in 2010, we have rescued over 1.7 million kilograms of food. Every $1 donated allows OzHarvest to deliver two meals to people in need.

Sailability Belmont Sailability Belmont was established in 1997 by members of the Belmont 16 Foot Sailing Club after the president, Mr Kevin Buxton, saw a demonstration of the Access Dinghy in Sydney. Several come-and-try days were held and Sailability Belmont 16s was officially launched in June 1997. The program, through the activity of sailing, enriches the lives of people with any type of disability; the elderly; and the financially and socially disadvantaged. Sailability Belmont has more than 90 sailors and over 60 volunteers, and conducts the program four days a week for 46 weeks each year.

Toronto Men’s Shed Toronto Men’s Shed is a community-based, not-for-profit organisation providing a safe place in which men of all ages are able to meet for fellowship, social interaction and manual pursuits. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday, from 9am to 3pm, at 16 Nicholson Street, Toronto. Drop in any day for a visit and a cuppa. We have also made the move to our new shed, which is fitted with a commercial dust extraction system and reticulated compressed air. There is a large range of modern equipment, including wood and metal lathes, a full range of welding gear, a 20” heavy-duty wood planer, and various saws, sanding and finishing equipment. The shed is very much involved with the local community, including the Toronto Senior Citizens, Lake Macquarie Historical Society, Toronto Girl Guides, and Biraban, Awaba and Toronto public schools, to name a few.

This week... From the editor Seeing proud parents share photos of their youngsters dressed up for Book Week at school, I am reminded of some of the costumes I wore. I recall, with equal parts joyful nostalgia and embarrassment, some of the ensembles I subjected my classmates to: the classic Snow White (hard to go wrong there); a half-baked leprechaun outfit, with green face paint to boot; and then there was the time I went as Selby the talking dog. Based on my favourite series at the time, the Selby costume was a defi nite winner, mostly because it wasn't thrown together at the last minute. It was handmade with love by my stepmum, Jade. She spent hours sewing it and poring over the fi ner details – like the brown, fluffy shoe covers made to look like paws. Remembering all this makes me realise I don't have the time, as an adult, to immerse myself in books the way I did as a kid. Granted, my dad incentivised this by rewarding me with a trip to the DJ's toy department every time I fi nished a book, but still… I leave you with a photo of me, dressed as Snow White, circa 1999 (Year 1, age six). - Georgia Osland

news Residents call for immediate action Fears for pedestrian safety have ignited calls for upgrades to a busy Mount Hutton intersection. The Mount Hutton Windale Residents Action Group last week met with Lake Macquarie councillors at the intersection of Dunkley Parade and Progress and Tennent roads to discuss what could be done to improve safety for all road users. Residents action group spokesperson, Susan Foster, said the problem lied with Progress and Tennent roads. She said drivers turning right onto Dunkley Road, near Mount Hutton Public School, from Tennent Road, had to give way to oncoming cars travelling straight from Progress Road to Tennent Road, but that quick traffic light cycles meant many drivers were taking risks. “When the lights go green, they’ve got very limited time to make that right turn,” Ms Foster said. “Usually, they’re so focused on oncoming traffic that they forget to look right, where pedestrians are crossing; or, they turn right on a red arrow.”

Last month, a nine-year-old girl was hit and injured by a car on Dunkley Parade, further amplifying the residents action group’s collective voice. Members heard many other “horror stories” when collecting signatures for two separate petitions – one of which Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, tabled in state parliament with 722 signatures on the day of the site meeting, and another lodged with Lake Macquarie council, carrying 650 signatures. Some of the solutions floated by the residents action group include retiming the traffic lights so that drivers on Tennent Road and Progress Road exit at different times; installing a red light speed camera; and installing flashing lights at the school zone, as well as painting a zebra crossing. Another major solution, according the group, could be to extend a section of Tennent Road, near vacant land lots, to Warners Bay Road, thus diverting traffic away from Dunkley Parade altogether. until 10 September, flags the construction of a roundabout at the Bayview Street intersection, where Dunkley Parade meets Warners Bay Road, within the next three to five years. However, the plan states the fourth arm of the roundabout – the suggested link between Tennent Road and Warners Bay Road – will not be needed until 2032. Ms Foster added that north ward councillor Brian Adamthwaite, who attended the site meeting, reportedly said, as a major intersection, the issue fell predominantly under Roads and Maritime Services’ jurisdiction, but that the council could conduct traffic studies. - Georgia Osland

Work kicks off on skate park

Centre snags BBQ trailer Social isolation can often lead to poor mental health and a lack of access to medical services. For more than three decades, the Sugarvalley Neighbourhood Centre (SVNC) has worked at the coalface of one of the Hunter Region’s most isolated communities. The centre helps to strengthen bonds, preventing West Wallsend residents from sliding into marginalisation and loneliness. Now, a barbecue trailer will allow the SVNC to support the community at events and extend its services. SVNC coordinator Michelle Brosnahan said the trailer would be an important asset. “Our experience, gained over 35 years, tells us that people want to connect with their community, but can be constrained by a lack

of mobility or access to events and services,” she said. “This trailer allows us to go out into the community and connect with many more people, providing social interaction and a soft entry point for referral to critical community services they may need. “[It] will also be made available for other community organisations to use, and the fully-contained set-up, including a cool room and storage, makes it perfect for small groups that may not have the facilities to hold events.” The trailer, which had its first outing at West Wallsend Public School’s Book Week celebrations last Thursday, was purchased with a $30,000 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation. Chair Phil Neat said one of the foundation’s key focus areas included supporting projects that

address social isolation. “With this new community asset, SVNC and other community groups can address isolation and marginalisation and help build a more connected, resilient community,” he said. - Ben Murphy

It might be hard to imagine now, but East Maitland will be a haven for skaters by the end of the year. A new skatepark in Lawes Street is set to feature a skate bowl and street elements, along with three small, all-weather shelters, social seating spaces, a water bubbler, and an area that supports spill-out spaces for events and competitions. The design’s functional style and bowl will offer a uniqueness to the current skatepark facilities in Maitland. Construction is now underway and is expected to be completed in November. “It’s so wonderful to see construction starting on the East Maitland Skatepark,” Maitland C mayor, Loretta Baker, said. Car enthusiasts are no doubt revved up as street machines, military vehicles, speedway bikes and hot rods prepare to roar into Maitland Showground. While a colourful array of vintage models will offer a blast from the past, thankfully, this weekend’s Maitland Lions Club Motorfest is also set to give a nod to the future. The Show & Shine + Swap Meet, which takes place on Sunday 26 August from 7am until 2pm, will donate all proceeds to the Lions 4 Kids in Need initiative. Event organiser Geoff Kilmurray said the project started two years ago after a speech from Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW chief executive, Ross Bingham. Since opening its doors in 1991, the house, located near John Hunter Children’s Hospital, has offered a ‘home away from home’ to families of children receiving treatment for serious and life-threatening conditions. “Ross mentioned that, if you’re within 100 kilometres of the Ronald McDonald House, it can cost a little bit to stay there,” Mr Kilmurray said. “It was too big a project for just

one club, so we joined forces with some others in the area, formed a committee, and [Motorfest] is our first big fundraiser.” Mr Kilmurray said the seven clubs behind the project included two from Cessnock, two from Maitland, and one from Raymond Terrace, Kurri Kurri and Branxton. He added it would look to provide some relief for families going through a tough time. “For families with small children who go through the John Hunter [Children’s] Hospital system – by the time you get a child into the hospital, nearly all of your money in the bank is drained because some of those tests are expensive,” he said. “So we’ll give them a bit of assistance with accommodation; prescriptions or fuel vouchers so they can get down to see their child; or baby formulas and disposable nappies. “The more people that come to the Motorfest, the more we’ll be able to top up the coffers.” Entry fee is $5 for adults, $15 for a family of three or more, and free for children under 16 years of age. Marine exploration, robotics and 3D virtual reality experiences: Kahibah Public School students took a handson approach to National Science Week. Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 were engaged in a variety of science and future technology concepts to bridge the gap between primary school, local industry and real-world applications. Activities during National Science Week, which went from 11 to 19 August, included a Think Big Invent Off, where students followed a design to build, test and evaluate models of a Mars Lander. Pupils also participated in a Project Planet workshop to generate a Think Tank of ideas that could help reduce waste within the school. Teacher Jaimie Cook said the week’s activities, as well as a regular STEM (science, technology,

Outgoing University of Newcastle vice-chancellor, professor Caroline McMillen, has been announced as South Australia’s next chief scientist. The role will see her provide independent, high-level advice to the premier, the minister and the cabinet on matters of science and research, technology and innovation. Professor McMillen announced her retirement as the university’s vice-chancellor last year, and was due to depart the university in late 2018. She said she had not been thinking of taking on another major leadership role, but that “sometimes the best-laid plans are derailed by an unexpected turn of events”. After much thought, she decided the chief scientist role was one she could not turn down. Her last day at the university will be Friday 21 September.

He was joined by Red Bull Holden Racing Team data and performance engineer, Romy Mayer, to witness how science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills could help produce a career in motorsports. “It’s been a long time since I visited a school – [the students] were really inquisitive and engaged; I thoroughly enjoyed it,” Reynolds says. news “Outstanding” response to Port Stephens blaze Port Stephens mayor Ryan Palmer has praised the response of emergency services and the local community after a bushfire tore through the region over the weekend. Mr Palmer said Fire & Rescue NSW, the Rural Fire Service and National Parks and Wildlife Services had “done outstanding work” to contain the blaze, which raced across Salt Ash, Oyster Cove and Tanilba Bay. Work is underway on a 250-metre “missing link” of shared pathway alongside one of Lake Macquarie’s busiest roads. The $350,000 project includes the construction of a new path on the north side of Medcalf Street, from Lakelands Drive east to the Lakelands tennis courts. The existing path, connecting the tennis courts with Lakelands Community Hall, and a small section of ageing path west of Lakelands Drive, will also be renewed.

“We will also be building a more substantial amenities building for the tennis courts,” Lake Macquarie council’s acting manager for community planning, Andrew Bryant, said. “These works will fill the gap between existing shared pathways, making it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to get around.” Mr Bryant said the project was part of the council’s ongoing commitment to improve and extend the city’s network of shared pathways.

Playground upgrade underway Maitland council has undertaken the first part of improvement works at Bakers Brickyard Playground, Raworth, this week. The $559,000 upgrade, funded under the state government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund, will include a shade structure, toilets,

carparking and barbecue facilities. Due to the work’s significance, the popular playground has been closed since Monday but is set to reopen tomorrow (Friday 24 August). However, Maitland council states further closures will be required towards the end of September.

news First-time riders tackle their Everest When Andy Olrich and Kristi Ayerst volunteered for Camp Quality’s 1,000 K’s 4 Kids flagship fundraiser, neither of them professed to be in shape, let alone own a bike. But their desire to make a difference to children with cancer and their families outweighed any doubts they had about their fitness or cycling know-how. The pair – who were total strangers before signing up – will be two of 39 riders to take on a challenging 1,143-kilometre ride from Maleny, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, to Warners Bay. They will be backed by a 25-strong support crew, which will tend to their every need as they cycle between 70 and 150km on-road each day, from 7 to 16 September. Mum-of-two Kristi was inspired to take on the challenge to prove to herself that she could, whilst also raising much-needed funds and awareness for Camp Quality, while Andy’s motivation was a little more personal. His nephew, Damon, lost his battle with leukaemia in 2002. So, on 13 December last year (Damon’s

birthday), Andy announced he would be completing the ride in Damon’s honour, having seen first-hand the benefit of Camp Quality’s child therapy programs, puppet shows and family camps and retreats. “Seeing the difference these guys make really sealed the deal,” Andy said. Kristi added it was just one way they could make a measurable impact. “We’ve got a choice, whether we get on our bikes or not; these kids [undergoing treatment] don’t get a choice,” she said. Kristi and Andy are leading the fundraising tally by a mile – Kristi, in first place with almost $18,000 in donations, and Andy, in second, on more than $13,000 towards Camp Quality’s $400,000 goal. Andy – a self-professed “unco” with a “dad bod” – had reached about $1,000 in donations before he even bought a bike, which, still, he says he knows very little about. What Andy and Kristi do know is that the ride will be the easy part, having spent months in training, seeking out hills, mountains, and

Volunteer Glad Dent joined the Calvary Mater Newcastle Auxiliary at the tender age of 80. “I just wanted to do things for people who can’t,” she says. Two decades on, the Elermore Vale resident has celebrated her 100th birthday at the hospital alongside family and friends from the auxiliary. In 2009, Glad became the group’s president and led the team for three years before being voted vice-president – a role she held until August 2015. Born on 14 August 1918, she is a proud mother of five, grandmother to 11, great-grandmother to 21, and remains an active and highlyrespected auxiliary member. So, what’s Glad’s secret to longevity and good health? “I’ve led an ordinary life, but I’ve never been afraid of hard work,” she

Newcastle council can now apply for funding to address coastal erosion along Stockton Beach after the state government gave its management plan the green light. The Newcastle Coastal Zone Management Plan 2018 includes actions to address coastal hazards, such as erosion and recreational and environmental issues, along the Newcastle coastline. “This is a positive step in what has been a decades-long issue for Stockton,” Parlimentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said. Other management actions in the plan include continued maintenance of dune systems and beach-scraping activities; and the demolition of the former North Stockton Surf Life Saving Club upon expiry of the early learning centre’s lease.

This scenario is part of a pilot interactive online game that has been developed by University of Newcastle researchers Jaime Wroe and Miranda Cashin. Choose Your Own Parenting Experience (COPE) is designed to allow new parents to make choices and test them out in a safe learning environment. Ms Cashin says research shows psychoeducation can help parents in the often-trying transition to parenthood. “Being a new parent is not an easy gig,” she says.

“There is so much conflicting information about how to best care for your baby and everyone is an expert and wants to give you their opinion. “As a new parent, how do you know what to do?” The research team developed the game with two scenarios that, together, have hundreds of possible pathways for parents to explore. While the game is evidencebased, they acknowledge it needs to work for parents in the real world. So, the team has invited parents to take part in the pilot study and test the game. Emma Teni is among the first parents to participate. “It allows you to see the different ways in which to approach certain circumstances,” she says. “I think it’s an interesting concept.”

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has fast-tracked the official Bush Fire Danger Period by one month. Bushfire season will now start on Saturday 1 September. Central Coast district manager, Superintendent Paul Jones, says, “The early start to the Bush Fire Danger Period is a result of the current drought conditions and elevated fire risk being experienced across the state and in the local government areas of Central Coast and Lake Macquarie.” During this time, fire safety permits are required for open burning activities, including pile burning and hazard reduction burns. Council knocks back DA Streetscape impact was one of many issues – along with parking and traffic – raised by concerned residents who banded together in 2015 to oppose the development through petitions and public pleas to the council. Construction of Fettlers Whitebridge is now well underway, however, it appears the developer’s attempt to reinstate the two, top-floor apartments was once again met with contention, despite recommendations by council officers to approve the request, or, at the very least, endorse a variation of the maximum building height. Lake Macquarie council has refused an application to add two, fourth-storey apartments to an already-approved contentious housing development in Whitebridge. SNL Building Constructions lodged a separate request with the council in late January to reinstate the apartments removed by the Joint Regional Planning Panel in 2015, when it ruled on the original proposal for a 91-unit housing development on Dudley Road. The planning panel deleted the top-floor apartments so the overall height of that particular section would not exceed the development standard of 10 metres, in keeping with the suburb’s character. With the additional one and three-bedroom apartments, its height would have reached 14.3 metres.

news Toronto Foreshore plan up for public discussion Lake Macquarie council has invited feedback as it seeks to transform Toronto Foreshore into an attractive new community, tourist and lifestyle destination. The first phase of community consultation for the Toronto Foreshore Master Plan opened last week. Crunch time as finals loom The Newcastle Northstars head to Perth this weekend with a finals spot on the line. Newcastle endured mixed results last week, going down 9-3 to the finals-bound Sydney Bears on Friday night before thumping bottom-placed Adelaide 10-4 at home on Saturday. The Northstars started brightly against Adelaide, slotting home three goals in the first period through Matt Wetini, Sammy Banga and Zane Jones. 1 Tbsp baby capers, chopped 8 cloves garlic, chopped 400g tinned diced tomatoes 2 tsp red wine vinegar 1 tsp brown sugar

1 bunch basil leaves, sliced 1 bunch oregano leaves, chopped 1 bunch parsley leaves, chopped 4 lemons, segmented and diced

Preheat oven to 210°C. Combine the sumac, cumin and chilli, and then rub onto the lamb. Set aside for 20 minutes. Fry the eggplant on barbecue grill or pan in 2 tablespoons of olive oil for 5 minutes, until lightly browned, then drain on kitchen paper. Sauté the onion, capsicum, celery, capers and half the garlic in 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a medium saucepan set over a moderate heat for 5 minutes, until just softened. Add the tomatoes; vinegar and sugar, and then simmer for 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, then stir in the eggplant and basil. Season the lamb cutlets with salt then fry in 1 tablespoon of olive oil on barbecue grill or pan over a high heat until browned. Transfer to an oven dish and bake for 10 minutes, until medium. Mix the oregano, parsley, lemon segments and remaining olive oil in a bowl then season generously with salt and pepper. Serve the lamb on caponata (eggplant mix) topped with the oregano sauce.

Arj Barker wants to talk, but don’t worry – you’re not in trouble. One of the world’s best standup comedians will appear in the Hunter Region next month to perform his new show – We Need to Talk. Quite often this phrase has negative connotations, but Barker believes we must discuss our interactions as humans. “Hey, you got an hour?” he asks. “Look, I’ve been doing a s***– tonne of thinking about… us, and where we’re headed. “This isn’t easy, but I need to be 100% honest with you, even if what I say makes you laugh very, very hard. “You had better sit down for this.” Barker’s show includes a theme around technology and how the world has changed in the past 20 years because of the internet and smartphones. Another section will comment on his personal life as a newlywed, while a third chapter focuses on life in general. Make no mistake; while he brings up some good points, the goal is always to make people laugh. “There is quite an argument in comedy at the moment: is it more

important to be meaningful or funny?” Barker tells Newcastle Weekly. “I don’t judge people, but I put myself in the latter camp. “I’d like to be funny, first and foremost. “I make fun of myself a lot and also make fun of us, as people, and how we’re evolving.” American-born Barker has toured the world extensively and made numerous appearances on late-night talk shows, including David Letterman and Conan O’Brien’s flagship programs. Barker also plays Dave on the hit series Flight of the Conchords, while he is no stranger to Australian television either, appearing on shows such as Thank God You’re Here, Rove, Spicks & Specks, Good News Week, The 7pm Project, and Have You Been Paying Attention. He will appear at a number of venues, including Nelson Bay Diggers (7 September); Belmont 16s (8 September); Mingara Recreation Club (13 September); Wests New Lambton (14 September); and Cessnock Leagues Club (15 September). Country music star’s “rollercoaster” time From Newcastle to Nashville, and back again; it’s been quite a journey for Catherine Britt. After making the move to the country music mecca as a freshfaced 17-year-old, she has since forged an impressive career. Critical acclaim for her albums and a glowing reputation as a performer saw her tour with some of the biggest names in music, including Sir Elton John, Don McLean, Kasey Chambers, Dolly Parton, Chris Isaak and Keith Urban. The accolades continued to flow upon her return to Australia in 2009, with Britt receiving five Golden Guitar Awards, the Country Music Association (CMA) Global Artist of the Year in 2010, and six ARIA nominations for Best Country Album. The past three years, however,

have been a self-proclaimed “total rollercoaster”. Britt fought, and won, her battle with breast cancer, married her husband James, and gave birth to her first child, Hank. Out of those highs and lows came Catherine Britt & The Cold Cold Hearts – an album that rattles and rolls with life, energy, and autobiographical songwriting. “It’s [like] a personal diary entry – very real, honest and in your face – and I’m very proud of that,” Britt tells Newcastle Weekly. Catherine Britt & The Cold Cold Hearts conjures up vibrant Australian imagery, from the bush to the coal mines via the white lines of the coastal and desert open roads; the beauty and scale of the landscape juxtaposed with songs of personal

challenge and the power of love and family. The album features the first single Red Dirt – an ode to driving toward the outback skies, leaving the city in the rearview mirror. It’s an experience she has grown accustomed to as she travels around Australia in a caravan with her family while promoting her new album. “We’ve been doing it for about two-and-a-half years; we got the idea to do our honeymoon in a van and

then thought: ‘Oh my God, we’re doing this full time, how do we get a caravan?’” she says. “It is a great way to bring a kid up; we just love Australia, it’s such a wonderful place to live.” Britt will now bring a special performance to Lizotte’s on Saturday 1 September – her only Newcastle show before heading to the USA to tour in September and October. James Morris has been a Camp Quality volunteer for more than a decade. Over the years, he has dedicated his time and enthusiasm to volunteering at about 40 local programs, including family camp, mini camp, middle camp and junior camp. Each of these programs are designed to give families and kids impacted by cancer the opportunity to thrive. James brings with him an optimistic and upbeat energy. His work as a volunteer has enriched the lives of hundreds of Newcastle families growing up with cancer, using fun and positivity as tools to help them make happy memories not centred on sickness. When he’s not giving back to the community, James works as an assistant principal at Holy Cross Primary School. Outside of school hours, James is happiest spending time with his loving family – wife Belinda and three step-daughters. 66
