This week... From the editor Every now and then, the universe likes to teach us a lesson in patience (something I lack). A house hunting hiccup, a skimmed debit card racked with fraudulent transactions, and a car that won’t start on a Monday morning: bad things happen in threes, right? But are these really “bad” things (all of which happened to me last week)? A house hunting hiccup means I am welloff enough to consider buying my fi rst home to begin with; a skimmed debit card, again, is a sound indicator that I am doing OK to have such a luxury; and some people don’t even own a car, let alone a reason to become frustrated when their chosen (but not their only) mode of transport breaks down. There is a silver lining in everything – you just need a little perspective. It’s hard not to get a grip when you realise there are people far worse off – but usually somehow happier – than you. I remembered this when interviewing Newcastle photographer Jye Currie for this week’s cover story. Jye has collated a photographic exhibition from his mission trip to remote communities in Kenya, Africa. While the trip was cut short due to the group’s safety being endangered, some of the people Jye captured photographs of – and their happy-golucky attitudes – will astound you. news Library cuts cause for concern They have been described as a place for people, a key enabler of literacy, and an important site for learning, culture and social connection. But a lack of state government funding for public libraries has now reached “crisis point”, Maitland mayor Loretta Baker claims. Cr Baker called on councillors this week to back a campaign that opposes cuts to more than 360 libraries across the state. The NSW Public Libraries Association and Local Government NSW formed the campaign, Renew Our Libraries, after accusing the state government of slashing funds by 18% in the 2018/19 budget. Instead of cuts, the campaign urges for a significant increase in funding for public libraries. In her mayoral minute on Tuesday night, Cr Baker pointed out Maitland council had invested

heavily in library services over the past decade, including about $1.8 million annually, which supported 250,000 library visits and around 500,000 loans. She said the state’s public library network was at serious risk of imminent service reduction. A key issue included NSW public libraries receiving the lowest per-capita funding from the state government compared to all other states in Australia. NSW councils are reportedly paying 92.5% of the costs to operate public libraries, up from 77% in 1980. “Neither this council, nor the broader NSW local government sector, can continue with the high degree of uncertainty about the level of ongoing state government funding for public libraries,” Cr Baker said.

“I am recommending that we support urgent action... to reverse the ongoing deterioration of state funding for public libraries to ensure that local councils will not be forced to continue meeting the funding shortfall.” Her comments followed Cessnock council’s decision to throw its support behind the Renew Our Libraries campaign. Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said the significance of local

libraries could not be understated. “In our local government area, less than half of households have a computer,” he said. “Our libraries are a central place for residents, especially students doing their homework or assessments. “The importance of libraries needs to be a priority and these services need to be supported by a sustainable funding model.” - Ben Murphy

Roads and children can be a dangerous mix. So, for Wallsend South Public School’s P&C, an improvement to school zone safety has come as a relief. The school, located at Elermore Vale, was one of six in the Hunter Region to benefit from a $10 million state government program. Under the program, kerb extensions and bus stop works were completed on the nearby McCaffrey Drive. Jane Peck, a member of Wallsend South’s P&C, said the group had also successfully lobbied Lake Macquarie council for a traffic island, new pathways and upgrades to pedestrian crossings. “Both entrances to the school are on busy residential streets and offer limited places to park,” she said. “So the new pathways, on Grandview [Road], will encourage parents to park their cars and walk their kids to school. “The pedestrian crossing also makes it more obvious on a very busy road, which is only going to get worse with the [Newcastle Inner City] bypass. “An incredible amount of traffic passes through there, so driving safely is something we consider with the P&C on a regular basis.

“Lake Macquarie council was really receptive to the new pathways when I outlined what the issues were, so they do recognise when things need to be addressed.” Apart from Wallsend South, the state government’s project also saw work completed on Glebe Road for Adamstown Public School; Young Street for Carrington Public School; Brown Street for Newcastle East Public School; Union Street for The Junction Public School; and Reservoir Road for Newcastle Waldorf School. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said, while there had been no schoolaged pedestrian deaths in active school zones since December 2013, drivers should not become complacent. “School children are some of the most vulnerable people using the road, which is why we have programs such as school zone flashing lights, pedestrian crossings and fencing to keep children safe going to and from school,” he said. The number of pedestrian deaths in NSW stands at 41 so far – 12 more than the same time last year. - Ben Murphy

news Group opposes foreshore proposal

Lake Macquarie council’s proposal to build a mixed-use commercial, residential and tourism complex at Toronto Foreshore has been met with staunch opposition. In April, the council voted to proceed with plans to develop prime waterfront land near Bath Street, stating it was earmarked as an ideal site for decades and would provide an economic boost to the area. However, concerned residents have since formed the Toronto Foreshore Protection Group (TFPG) to oppose the development. The group’s petition has attracted almost 3,000 hard-copy and online signatures to date. It seeks the reclassification of all land on the Toronto Foreshore as community land in order to protect the area as a place of public recreation and to ensure there is adequate infrastructure and public recreational facilities to support Toronto’s future population growth. The group, which is an alliance between the Coal Point Progress Association, Toronto Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, the Rotary Club of Toronto Sunrise and the Royal Motor

Sanitary products often become luxuries for women fleeing violence. A women’s homelessness charity, Share the Dignity, supplies free sanitary products to more than 85,000 homeless women in Australia and fights for domestic violence victims. Despite collecting 200,000 packets of pads and tampons as part of its April Dignity Drive, warehouses are now empty. Maitland MP, Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, and Acting Shadow Minister for Women, Jenny Aitchison, has pledged her support for this month’s Drive – the final one this year. “I’m extremely grateful to the local community for the support they’ve given to previous Share the Dignity Drives; it shows we live in a caring and generous community,” she said. The Maitland community is encouraged to drop off their donations of sanitary items during the month of August to Ms Aitchison’s temporary electorate office, located at Maitland Serviced Offices (MSO), 3/12 Ken Tubman Drive. Yacht Club, now plans to host a public meeting next month. Resident Nico Marcar said it would provide the community-at-large with a “clearer understanding” of what was being proposed for the site. “We’d like to see council stop progressing any development of the DA [development application] and evaluate different options for this site with community consultation through its foreshore master plan,” he said. “Our main point is we want to see the whole of the foreshore reclassified as community parkland rather than bits of it being marked as operational. “Anyone you talk to has some kind of reservation about this development.” Mr Marcar added the meeting would help the community to send a message, while also offering councillors the chance to provide feedback. news Base’s national significance A Rathmines site that served as a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) seaplane base in World War II has been deemed of national significance. The RAAF operated the base in Lake Macquarie from the start of the war, in 1939, until 1961, with catalinas and other aircraft moored offshore. Some aircraft were also hauled onto dry land for maintenance inside the site’s giant hangar. Now, a draft conservation management plan, undertaken by Lake Macquarie council, regards the heritage-listed base at Rathmines Park as strongly representative of Australia’s defence force activities during World War II. The site was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere at the time and the longest-serving during the war effort.

It is also the most intact example of an RAAF World War II seaplane base in Australia. Lake Macquarie council considers its draft document to be the first step in creating a future master plan for Rathmines Park. “Any future use of Rathmines Park must be mindful of the site’s heritage significance,” the council’s manager of community planning, Wes Hain, said. “The site has a fascinating and incredibly significant wartime history, which we wanted to fully understand before moving forward. “At its peak, this was Australia’s main seaplane base, responsible for launching airborne anti-submarine patrols right along the east coast.” According to the council’s draft document, 230 buildings were erected throughout the life of the base, but only 10 remain.

Part of the former hangar still survives and is now owned by the Christadelphian Bible School, while the council owns other buildings used for various purposes, including a bowling club, scout hall, workshop, music centre, and storage sheds. The site is also home to a RAAF Catalina Memorial, which opened in 1972. “Council will continue to ensure that any future community or commercial use does not negatively affect the interpretation or the appreciation of this picturesque

historical site,” Mr Hain added. “Now is the opportunity for the community to assist in providing copies of historic photos and documents associated with the former RAAF base.” The draft plan is on public exhibition until Friday 24 August. It can be accessed online via shape.lakemac.nsw.gov.au/ rathmines-park; at the council’s administration building; and at Speers Point, Morisset, Wangi Wangi and Toronto libraries. - Ben Murphy

news Innovation paves way for new road Newcastle-based soft plastics recycling program, Plastic Police, has played a pivotal role in the construction of the first road in NSW to be built using soft plastics. Led by environmental trailblazer Samantha Cross, Plastic Police contributed 40,000 pieces of soft plastics from the Hunter Region to initial labtesting trials. From this, soft plastics, glass, and other recycled products were used to produce 220 tonnes of asphalt to build a road in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire. Along with soft plastics and glass, toner from about 4,000 used printer cartridges and more than 60 tonnes of recycled asphalt were also repurposed for the stretch along Old Princes Highway, between Cooper Street and Engadine Road. In the Hunter, soft plastics are being collected from schools, businesses and councils that are participating in the Plastic Police pilot program. These organisations aggregate the soft plastics, while Plastic Police coordinates the collection and reprocessing of the material into new products.

Mrs Cross said this closed-loop model diverted soft, scrunchable plastics – such as biscuit packets and cling wrap – from landfill and prevented them from entering the ocean and environment. “As individuals and organisations, we have the opportunity to rethink how we reduce and reuse end-of-life soft plastics, and other materials that would otherwise end up in landfill or as litter in our communities, waterways and oceans,” she said. The Plastic Police program started in 2015 with the aim of helping the Hunter community find solutions to the growing volumes of soft plastic waste. It has, to date, saved almost two million pieces of soft plastics from entering landfill, which has been baled and turned into new products. In November 2016, Plastic Police, together with Biddabah Public School in Warners Bay, unveiled the world’s first playground bench that had been built from soft plastics the school had collected. Green thumbs up for system

Licence struggle drives idea Frank Nmezi had an idea, but that was the easy part. After arriving in Australia eight years ago, the Nigerian-born man, now aged 20, struggled to record enough hours of practice to obtain his provisional driver’s licence. His mum and dad both worked long hours, had other children to look after, and they couldn’t afford professional driving lessons. Two friends shared similar experiences to Frank. Drawing on their experience, the trio decided to develop an app to connect learner drivers with instructors and supervisors who could provide free, or low-cost, driving tuition. “We found a number of young people had the same problem,” Frank says. “This can lead to people fudging their hours and not having sufficient

experience to be as safe as they could be [when driving], which is an issue for the whole community.” Despite finding an app developer, the trio soon realised there were many other aspects to establishing their social enterprise. They were told about the Hunter Futurepreneurs Program – a free, state government initiative available to all residents in the region. It aims to provide budding entrepreneurs with the skills and confidence to run a business. The program directed Frank and his colleagues to a Youth Employment Innovation Challenge, which funds innovative solutions to help young people find work in NSW. The trio, under the name DriveConnex, pitched their Learner Driver Hack App and successfully gained entry into the program. So, what’s Frank’s advice for

other budding entrepreneurs? “Do whatever it takes to get your idea out there; don’t let that burning light of an idea get covered over,” he says. As part of the challenge, Frank and his colleagues have established a pilot of the app in the Hunter Region. An estimated 1,000 tonnes of food and garden waste has been diverted from landfill during the first two weeks of Lake Macquarie council’s greener three-bin system. Bin checks conducted across the city since Food + Garden = Green was introduced on 30 July showed that, on average, 97% of green bins were being used correctly, with no visible contamination. Under the new system, food scraps are placed in green bins alongside garden waste. Green bins are collected weekly, while red-lidded general waste bins are collected fortnightly, on alternating weeks to yellow recycling bins. news Vital support in cancer journey Aine Beard had lost her father to oesophageal cancer and gone through a marriage separation within a 12-month period when she received a dreaded phone call from her doctor. “They were pretty sure it was breast cancer,” she says. “I pulled the car over and cried because the only other dealing we’ve had with cancer was my dad dying, and that was fast and nasty. “I thought: ‘I’m a single mum with three kids all under five, what am I going to do?’” The Hunter woman endured six rounds of chemotherapy, 21 hours of radiation and 21 rounds of Herceptin – a targeted treatment done by injection that makes the immune system stronger, so it can fight the cancer. Doctors then found another tumour on her left breast.

While undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, Aine travelled back and forth from Taree to Sydney every week – a six-hour round trip. The side effects of the treatment took a toll on her. “With the chemo, I lost all of my hair, my skin broke down on my hands and feet and I couldn’t walk for weeks,” she says. “I had to have a tooth removed because it had abscess [infection] under it and I had a full mouth of ulcers for five weeks.” Aine also began to struggle financially. However, she was able to find some relief and support through Cancer Council’s free and confidential phone service – Cancer Connect. “I used Cancer Connect and I accessed the Cancer Council’s emergency financial assistance

program and was granted $150 to pay bills,” she says. “I also used the Cancer Cars because the radiation that I was getting was about 45 minutes from where I lived, so I used them regularly. “It made things so much easier.” Today, there is no sign of Aine’s cancer. She spends her days with her three children, Laney, Suzie and Declan, and has been volunteering for the Cancer Connect program since last November. “I know the value of the service – it’s this one-stop shop where I can find anything that I need to know,” she says. “It’s important to let other people know that, yes this is a life-changing thing, but it’s not the be-all-and-endall.” Aine decided to tell her story in

news Businesses set for makeover Businesses in Beresfield and Carrington are primed for a makeover thanks to a façade improvement scheme. Grants of up to $4,000 are up for grabs to complement the local centre works currently underway by Newcastle council. “We are overhauling the streets and footpaths, planting trees and gardens and installing new street furniture,” Newcastle lord mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, said. “Now we want the business community to think about their shopfronts and implement quick, low-cost projects that are really going to boost the commercial appeal of our local centres. “Sometimes just a little bit of paint is all a business needs to freshen its look and, when several businesses follow suit, it creates a trendy vibe that draws customers to

the whole area.” A total of $60,000 in grants is available across the two suburbs. Upgrades must directly improve the impression of the building or shopfront, such as painting storefronts and repairing damaged façades and awnings; improving the external view of the building by removing paint, posters or other coverings from doors and windows; and adding new doors and windows to improve foot traffic flow and lighten the space. Applicants must contribute a minimum of one third of the improvements costs, which the council will match with the additional two thirds up to the maximum of $4,000 per grant. Research investigates PFAS contamination The University of Newcastle has received $1.5 million for two research projects that will seek groundbreaking ways to address per-and-poly fluoroalkyl (PFAS) contamination in the environment. The Australian Research Council’s PFAS Remediation Research Program aims to facilitate the development of innovative technologies to investigate and remediate PFAS in soil and other solid contaminated debris,

groundwater, waterways, and marine systems. One study will look into the thermal decomposition of PFAS, while the other will investigate ways to remediate sites affected by the application of biosolids, contaminated by PFAS. The university’s senior deputy vice-chancellor, Kevin Hall, said the funding announcement was strong recognition of its world-class research and innovation.

Wallsend MP laments police numbers Wallsend state MP Sonia Hornery has “lost count” of the number of times she’s urged the state government to allocate more police resources in her electorate. “Our local police are doing an incredible job with the resources they have, but people in Wallsend

are losing faith in the ability of police to help them,” she says. Ms Hornery put a notice of motion before the government earlier this year and held a meeting with the Newcastle City Police District, which temporarily halted a wave of petty crimes.

news Hunter leaders reach new heights Twenty-five Hunter business and community leaders raised more than $74,000 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service in the inaugural Newcastle Leaders Leap. The brave participants – which included Newcastle Knights business development executive Kurt Gidley, NBN weatherman Gavin Morris, Supercars driver Lee Holdsworth, and Newcastle Weekly editor Georgia Osland – each took a leap of faith as they abseiled down the face of McDonald Jones Stadium to raise vital funds for the 24/7 aeromedical service. The group was in the expert hands of Advanced Solutions Group and the State Emergency Service, as the leaders faced – in pairs – the thrilling descent into the drop zone, where the community gathered to cheer them on. It was the first time the event had been held in Newcastle, following similar events held on the Central Coast and other areas across the state. Miss Osland – who, along with some others, volunteered to complete the abseil not once, but twice – raised $3,000 towards the group total, thanks to her generous supporters in the weeks

leading up to the event. “It was the first time I’d fundraised for a cause, and where better to start than with one of the fantastic organisations we have the privilege of sharing stories about,” she said. “I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I’m not the biggest fan of heights, but I couldn’t say no to a chance to break out of my comfort zone and support the community in doing so.” Since it was established in 1975, no one has ever had to pay to be assisted by the rescue helicopter service. Every day, skilled crews perform delicate operations, including search and rescue missions, airlifting people to safety after accidents such as quad bike rolls, and inter-hospital transfers for critical patients, including babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It is only through the community’s support that the service remains free. Some funding is received from the state government, through NSW Health and NSW Ambulance, but the service also relies heavily on public donations.

To that end, Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service chief executive officer, Richard Jones, said he was overwhelmed by the passion and generosity of the Leaders Leap participants. “It’s clear to see that the Hunter is home to many big-hearted and brave individuals,” he said. “Each leader has gone above and beyond. “Thank-you to our generous community of supporters for getting behind [them].” Fundraising is open until Friday 17 August. news Financial help for tenants Tenants in the private rental market in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie who are struggling to pay their rent will be able to access financial relief under a new government subsidy trial. Rent Choice Assist provides rental assistance for up to three years while tenants are supported to find employment and study opportunities to help restore their financial independence. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said the subsidy was the latest private rental assistance support to help people keep a roof over their heads. “Unforseen events such as illness or retrenchment can put people at risk of homelessness,” Mr MacDonald said. “But, Rent Choice Assist can support them while they get back

on their feet. “The NSW government is committed to preventing homelessness. “I welcome the investment in initiatives like this to help vulnerable people at risk of homelessness maintain their leases in the private rental market.” Up to 200 participants across four areas are expected to take part in the pilot, which is set to start next month. The state government has committed $1 billion to homelessness services over the next four years. Rent Choice Assist complements existing programs for youth, veterans, and domestic violence victims. news Region’s bid for World Cup Rugby Australia has officially announced Newcastle and the Hunter Valley as the tournament location for its 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup bid. Under the plan, teams from 11 countries will join Australia’s squad, the Wallaroos, in the region for an explosive tournament that is expected to boost the NSW economy by up to $23 million. If successful, matches will be held at Maitland No.1 Sportsground, Newcastle’s No. 2 Sportsground and the final at McDonald Jones Stadium. Maitland product Mollie Gray, who played for the Wallaroos at the 2017 World Cup in Ireland, said it would be incredible to host the event. “The Hunter [Region] has such a strong rugby community for women and is constantly on the rise,” she told Newcastle Weekly.

“A great example of the growth of women’s rugby within the community is Maitland’s under-7s girls’ team. “The fact there is an entire team of young girls wanting to play is proof of the sport’s popularity. “Being a local girl, I couldn’t be more excited that Rugby Australia plans to host the World Cup at home and I am certain Newcastle will do us all proud in organising a spectacular event.” Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the World Cup would be one of the biggest ever sporting events for the city. “The City of Newcastle was proud to host the Matildas for a friendly against Brazil in 2017, and our community responded by setting an Australian record for an international women’s soccer game,” she said.

The Wizards juniors defeated Tuggerah Lakes 47-23, while Royalty downed the Heat 45-27. A taste of Maitland on two wheels Feeling inspired on a sunny Friday morning, this reporter jumped on his push bike and rode around Maitland’s CBD in search of some popular local eateries. After coffee at the Bikesmith & Espresso Bar – what better place to start? – I pressed on to Maitland Regional Art Gallery, passing St Peter’s Campus Maitland and the old Maitland Mercury building before reaching my destination, located near the PCYC and revamped Maitland No.1 Sportsground. Inside the art gallery lies Seraphine Café. It was a tough decision on brunch – with eggs benedict, the farm brekky and crushed avocado all very strong

Eye-opening mission inspires charity exhibition The young boy of about 14 on Newcastle Weekly’s front cover had with him, at the time his photograph was taken, nothing but the clothes on his back and three goats. Warners Bay photographer Jye Currie met him in a remote mud hut village in the impoverished region of Tucana, in northern Kenya, Africa. As a herdsman, the nomadic boy lives off the land, where goats are the local currency. This is his way of life, and, having known no other way, he is happy. The young boy (whose name remains a mystery) was one of 12 locals whose portraits Currie captured on a mission trip in April. Currie set out with Joel Kidd, director of non-government organisation The Africa Solution, to fi lm a documentary to expose living conditions in some of the most desolate areas of Kenya – so dangerous few dare to venture there. Mr Kidd owns maize farms in Lokichar, where he takes regular trips to distribute much-needed food to communities in need. “[My involvement] was mainly to show everyone, one: the living conditions there and what these people are going through, and, two: how this charity works,” Currie told Newcastle Weekly. Unfortunately, the trip was cut short due to the group’s safety being endangered. In Lokichar alone, two cars had been hijacked by bandits and an elder stabbed 20 times in the week leading up to the group’s arrival. No sooner had they fled this high-risk region than their car

became bogged in floodwaters. They were forced to abandon the car and hire a driver and two gunmen to escort them out of the area. Along the way, they managed to stop and complete a food drop, which nourished a community of 90 people. The group drove through the Kenyan desert for hours on end, and seeing children like the aforementioned boy – some, even younger – was not uncommon. “I saw one nine-year-old boy with three goats and asked if we should stop and help him,” Currie said. “It’d be like driving from [Newcastle] to Tamworth and seeing a nine-year-old walking along the road barefooted – you’d be calling in the Westpac [Rescue Helicopter Service] chopper.” It was later, in Tucana, that Currie captured most of his limited photographs – some, of people; others, of the landscape. “Some of the locals were afraid as they’d never seen a camera before, but they were okay with it once we explained, through a translator, that I was photographing them to share with the world.” While Currie was unable to fi lm the documentary, he has collated a series of 20 photographs to exhibit at the Cricketer’s Arms Hotel in Cooks Hill on Saturday 1 September. Half the proceeds from each ticket sold to the A Journey for the Soul exhibition will be donated to The Africa Solution. Every $40 ticket sold will feed three people for two weeks. Libraries utilise 3D printing magic The first 3D-printed book by an Australian author has been added to Lake Mac Libraries’ circulation. Edward the Emu, by Sheena Knowles, is a tactile storybook designed for both vision-impaired and able-sighted children. It features raised illustrations of Edward and his animal friends, including a seal, lion and snake, and was printed in-house using the Lake Mac Libraries network’s own 3D printer. Lake Macquarie council’s cultural services manager, Jacqui Hemsley, believes it is the first 3D-printed work by an Australian author. “We are excited to continue to grow our collection to share more stories and engage more young readers,” she said.

All that jazz Jazz musicians don’t do things by halves, and Adamstown pianist Rachel Hamilton is no exception. Hamilton is in high demand for the weekend of Friday 24 to Sunday 26 August, when the Newcastle & Hunter Jazz Club presents its 31st annual Newcastle Jazz Festival at Wests New Lambton and the adjacent bowling club. She and her husband, Craig, play in the traditional jazz band Zulu Kings and Queens, along with two other married couples. The kings and queens will be out in full force, along with some of their musically-gifted children (including the Hamiltons’ own two sons), at the festival, playing gigs on both the Saturday (adults-only) and Sunday (all ages). Having formed in late 2016 after

a group holiday, Hamilton told Newcastle Weekly the band was like an extension of family. “Playing in a jazz band is pretty relaxed as it is, but when it’s your family and friends, it’s even more laidback,” she said. “It’s good fun.” Over the mammoth three-day festival, Hamilton will also star in Eric Gibbons’ New Orleans Jazz Band and in Andy Firth’s Nova Swing band on Friday evening in the Starlight Room. On Sunday, she’ll be part of a jazz gospel. Having taken up piano when she was seven years old, Hamilton is well-versed in playing for a variety of audiences. She has previously worked as a music therapist, playing for elderly

people in nursing homes, and on the ward at John Hunter Children’s Hospital. Children’s author Cheryl Lee Player says her publishing debut has exceeded her wildest imagination. Player channelled her inner child to pen Jay’s Bugs, which was released on 1 August. A ballet teacher of more than 40 years, the Merewether author is no stranger to working with children, and says their creative minds can conjure up almost anything. “I ask them to imagine unimaginable imaginings, and they always have an answer,” Player says. Jay’s Bugs is the story of 10-year-old nature lover, Jay, and her best friend Sophia, a nervous ballerina. Together, they enter a competition with a project on bugs and insects. But raiding cantankerous Mr Mangel’s place in search of bugs

to add to their collection proves to be an adventure when Mr Mangel catches Jay red-handed. Drama unravels between the two friends, with interesting challenges and discoveries along the way. Player says it is a happy story of friendship between opposites, forgiveness, and the kindness of strangers. Initially bracing for a rejection letter, as her friends and family had warned, she was over the moon when London-based publishing house Olympia Publishers agreed to print the book. Player was thrilled once more when she had the chance to attend her granddaughter’s school in Singleton, earlier this month, to deliver a talk to the students. “It’s so important to encourage children to read and flex their imaginations,” she says. The visit was particularly special as Player’s granddaughter – and daughters – had also served as inspiration for the book. Player also made a special guest appearance at Gateshead’s Central School of Dance last week. She is already looking ahead to the next book in the series, which will involve an adventure in a cave – much like the ones at Caves Beach. “It’s still in the concept phase at the moment, rattling around my head,” she says. “I never know when Jay is going to show up or what she’s up to this time.” Jay’s Bugs is stocked locally at Dymocks Charlestown and Harry Hartog Booksellers at Westfield Kotara. - Georgia Osland

We are wishing the winter away and hoping spring will soon appear, but stop: it is still a little early to feed the grass. Lawns shouldn’t be fertilised until the grass is actively growing – the indicator being the mower is out. Fertilising now is a waste of time and money, as grass only takes up fertiliser when it is actively growing. It isn’t an issue to feed now, but it won’t help either, so use this pre-spring weather to eliminate bindiis, broadleaf and other weeds

Whereas Kleen Lawn, which is a wonderful all-purpose weeder, will damage buffalo. Best results will be achieved if you spray early in the morning on

dry grass that hasn’t been mown. The weeds need to be actively growing, plus the advantage of at least six hours of sun, to allow the chemical to do its job. Allow two weeks for weeds to die before fertilising. Although it seems like hard work, spraying, fertilising and top-dressing will ensure a strong, robust lawn, which will discourage weeds and pests such as army grub in summer. When mowing, maintain a constant cutting height to develop

MY YOGA MAT Like most working mums, I don’t have much spare time. Yoga and meditation helps me relax. I can’t always get to yoga class, but I take my mat with me when I travel, or I use it at home so I can do a yoga session at any time.
