This week... From the editor How nice it was on Monday morning to step outside and smell freshly-drenched earth. It had been a while; that much I could tell by how it hit me square in the face. I really feel for Hunter farmers who are struggling in this drought, but it has been reassuring to see all the community support since the state and federal governments’ drought relief packages made headlines. It’s all we Novocastrians can do to get behind those who need it most when times are tough. Take Shane Worrall, a local truckie who spawned an idea – during his lunch break, no less – to take matters into his own hands. He created the Fill A Truck For Farmers campaign, and, sure enough, his goodwill has materialised into practical help in the form of food, water, and toiletry donations. Here’s a guy who believes in doing good, not for recognition, but just because he can. Read more about that initiative on pages 10 and 11. I’d like to take one last opportunity to publicly thank all of those who sponsored me in the Leaders Leap fundraiser for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. With your help, I’ve met and exceeded my goal to raise $2,500, and, by the time most of you read this, I will have made good on my pledge to abseil down the face of McDonald Jones Stadium. news Adelaide’s shirt crusade The constant needles and medicines were a struggle for little Adelaide Gurr as she battled Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. After her diagnosis in January 2016, aged just three, Adelaide’s family, based in Raworth, decided to design a shirt that had a zip sewn into the chest. The ‘porty shirt’, as Adelaide called it, allowed nurses to easily access her port-a-cath – a device used to draw blood and provide treatments – and helped her feel more comfortable as she didn’t need to remove her shirt. From there, the Adelaide.Pray. Love Porty Shirt Crusade was born. Adelaide’s mother, Kirran Gurr, said the initiative aimed to “pay it forward” for other children who were experiencing cancer treatment. “We decided to initially make a

porty shirt for all children in John Hunter Hospital,” she said. “That goal was achieved in three weeks and now we have made, and sent, porty shirts for all children undergoing treatments, not only for cancer but [also] haemophilia and other illnesses, to oncology units Australia-wide. “Adelaide.Pray.Love has a strong community that sew, donate zips and shirts, and deliver them. “We have sewers in Melbourne, Sydney and even Perth. “We give our shirts free-ofcharge when people contact us, and we rely on donations. “It’s not okay to be diagnosed with cancer at any age and, if we can, as a community, relieve some stress for someone, then our hard work is worth it.” To date, more than 2,200 porty shirts have been distributed, while

shirts are also being designed for adults undergoing cancer treatment. As for Adelaide, she’s now six years old, has started kindergarten and, despite experiencing a few side effects from almost 800 days of chemotherapy, is cancer-free. Mrs Gurr said her family had grown to appreciate each day.

The University of Newcastle (UoN) has stepped up its efforts to improve support for survivors of sexual assault and harassment and expand prevention strategies in the wake of an Australian Human Rights Commission report. The release, and subsequent recommendations, of the Change the Course report in August 2017 formed part of the ongoing ‘Respect. Now. Always’ initiative – a sector-wide strategy devised to deliver meaningful and lasting change. The university stated its actions during the past 12 months aligned with the commission’s nine recommendations. These included a vice-chancellor advisory group; education, communication and resources; support services and reporting processes; university policies

The history of the former Newcastle Co-operative Store will be reflected in the $200 million redevelopment of the site. A Heritage Interpretation Strategy has been endorsed as demolition works on the existing structure starts this month. The strategy proposes The Store’s legacy is recognised through options including interpretation, architectural echoes of the former building, and an oral history of the site. Revitalising Newcastle program director, Michael Cassel, said demolition was expected to be completed by the end of the year, with the new bus interchange operational in 2020. The state government bought the site in 2015 and The Store’s demolition was approved under a review of environmental factors.

work with our community to ensure that every university student feels safe, welcome, and lives without fear of sexual assault or harassment.” Over the past year, UoN made consent training compulsory for all students; reviewed and updated reporting procedures to make it easier for survivors to access; established a new counselling triage service, ensuring students receive help as quickly as possible; provided staff most likely to receive disclosures with specialist information and training; worked to develop new guidelines on interaction between staff and students; and completed a check-in with UoN residences. The Port of Newcastle’s newlyappointed chief executive, Craig Carmody, has committed to the development of a world-class container terminal. Mr Carmody, who assumed the role after Geoff Crowe’s resignation, said the terminal would boost jobs and business opportunities in the Hunter Region and dramatically reduce the number of trucks on Sydney’s roads through the expanded use of Newcastle’s rail connectivity. “The potential for a container terminal in Newcastle to diversify and grow the NSW economy is far bigger than the [state] government seems to realise,” he said. Mr Carmody added the port had received interest from “domestic

and global players”. “However, we cannot proceed while the state government imposes an artificial restriction on port competition,” he said. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is investigating a constraint placed on the Port of Newcastle by the state government. The deal, struck prior to the port’s $1.75 billion sale in 2014, reportedly imposes a $100 fee on the world’s largest coal port for every box moved to Sydney’s Port Botany once more than 30,000 containers are shifted within a year. The Port of Newcastle believes a terminal will reduce freight and infrastructure costs, as well as port congestion.

Hunter schools at capacity NSW Labor took a swipe at the state government after Freedom of Information documents revealed nearly 40% of schools across the Hunter were at capacity. The documents showed 48% of schools in Cessnock had reached capacity, while Charlestown was at 32%, Maitland 45%, Newcastle 37%, Port Stephens 38%, Swansea 40%, the Upper Hunter 34%, and Wallsend 32%. Earlier this year, NSW Labor also pointed to documents that highlighted almost 4,200 demountables across the state were more than 20 years old. Shadow Minister for the Hunter,

Kate Washington, said the state government had the wrong priorities. “Students in the Hunter deserve better than being crowded in cramped classrooms or forced to learn in demountables,” she said. “The government refuses to build the extra schools we need to cope with the Hunter’s increasing population. “The Hunter contributes almost a third of our state’s economy – we’re not getting our fair share.” NSW Labor claimed the state government had failed to deliver on education minister Rob Stokes’ promise to build a dozen new schools each year.

When Shane Worrall hatched a plan on his lunch break to help the region’s drought-stricken farmers, he never imagined it would gain this much traction. Mr Worrall, a truck driver from Lake Macquarie, has taken time off work to “sort out the logistics” after an overwhelming response to his Fill A Truck For Farmers campaign. “Boxes need to be packed properly; we need loading machines; and just from the distribution and money side of things too – we’re not an organisation,” he told Newcastle Weekly. Mr Worrall said his idea came from what he saw as a lack of support for struggling farmers at government level. With 99% of NSW deemed to be in drought, he believed farmers needed urgent help and vowed to keep delivering items once the first stop was completed at Coonabarabran, in the state’s Central West. “I’m very anti-government at the moment, so this gives me a platform to do what I want and show that there doesn’t have to be something in it [for oneself] to help others,” he said.

“We will go from here [Lake Macquarie] to there and nothing gets touched on the way – 100% of what’s donated will reach the farmers.” The state government announced a further $500 million Emergency Drought Relief Package last week, which took its total drought support past the $1 billion mark. The three major elements of the package included about $190 million for drought transport subsidies; around $110 million to cut the cost of farming fees and charges; and $150 million to bolster the Farm Innovation Fund (FIF) infrastructure program. The federal government also announced this week that families, under the existing Farm Household Allowance (FHA) scheme, will receive two lump-sum payments, with couples in a household able to claim up to an additional $12,000 and singles eligible for up to $7,200. The FHA threshold cap was raised from $2.6 million to $5 million to make it easier for farmers to access the payment. It took the federal government’s drought relief package to $576 million.

Despite these announcements, Mr Worrall believed much more needed to be done. “I’ve been speaking with the farmers and they aren’t getting much out of it,” he said. The Fill A Truck For Farmers event will take place on Saturday 11 August from 10am until about 3pm at Speers Point Park. Donations can consist of non-perishable food and household items, petrol vouchers, pet food,

bottled water, and toiletries. However, Mr Worrall said organisers had also considered the impact on businesses in droughtaffected areas. “We’re trying to steer clear of collecting food and such products from now on and go towards things like prepaid debit cards,” he said. “We don’t want to negatively affect local businesses and take away from shop owners.

“We’ve got a limitless amount of trucks; people have contacted me from so many companies, so I’ve got no idea how many trucks we will fill.” For those who are unable to make it to the park on the day, there will be other donation drop-off zones. These include: Hunter Valley Pallets at Cameron Park, from 7am to 2pm, Monday to Friday; Toronto Diggers from 9am until closing; Storage King Hamilton, Maitland and North Wyong; and Beresfield Bowling Club from 8.30am to 8.30pm. Meanwhile, a whole host of organisations have jumped on board and pledged to make donations over the past few weeks. Members of the Australian Hotels Association Newcastle Hunter teamed up with hoteliers across the state in a bid to raise more than $150,000 for struggling farmers, while Coles, Woolworths, Bunnings and the Return and Earn’s network operator, TOMRA, also showed their support. news Baking for a good paws It’s fondly known as a “foster fail” – where carers take in a rescue animal, only to wind up adopting them. That’s exactly what happened when RSPCA Hunter Shelter customer service officer, Melanie Harris, met Arlo, the three-legged Ragdoll cat. After badly injuring his leg, presumably in a car accident, Arlo was taken to the Illawarra

shelter early last year. That February, Melanie answered the shelter’s urgent call for a foster carer, to oversee Arlo’s recovery after he underwent surgery to amputate his leg. She welcomed him with open arms into her Aberglasslyn home. “The first month was about gaining his trust,” Melanie told Newcastle Weekly. “It took three or four months for him to be fully confident. Then, he had to learn how to walk again; he kept overcompensating and would lose his balance. “After all of this, I couldn’t bear to part with him. I had always wanted a Ragdoll, and I just fell in love with him.” Arlo’s story is a heartwarming illustration of the vital work the RSPCA does – predominantly made possible by public donations and fundraising campaigns, like the upcoming RSPCA Cupcake Day. Melanie said lifesaving surgeries like Arlo’s could cost thousands of dollars, let alone the time, money and resources required to care for

cover story the animals at the shelter. “Without the community’s help, the staff wouldn’t be able to look after the animals,” she said. “[Funds raised] also help to provide new things; for example, the Hunter shelter just got a new exercise yard.” As a skilled amateur baker, Melanie’s sweet treats barely make it past the staff on Cupcake Day. news Doing it for baby Toby Less than a year after her child’s passing, Margot Downing is lacing up her joggers with nine of her closest supporters to pay it forward. The Downings – Margot, her partner Tom, and their children Sophia, 4, and Jed, 2 – live in The Marra, near Nyngan, eight hours north-west of Newcastle. Their son and brother, Toby, born last September, never made it home. During the final weeks of Margot’s pregnancy, the family was expecting a healthy baby boy. Toby was supposed to be delivered on Friday 15 September, however, the doctor decided to wait and see if Margot went into labour naturally over the coming days. That weekend, Margot suffered a placental abruption – where the placenta detaches from the uterine wall, either partially or completely, which can cause bleeding and interfere with the baby’s oxygen and nutrient supply. In Toby’s case, his oxygen supply was severely limited. He was delivered via emergency caesarean at Dubbo Base Hospital, and, after doctors stabilised his condition, he was airlifted to John

Toby suffered from kidney failure, decreased heart function, and his blood results were “terrible” according to the doctor, Margot told Newcastle Weekly. His brain damage was irreversible, and he was unable to survive without intubation. Ten days after his birth, Toby died due to hypoxic ischemic encephalitis (lack of oxygen). Through this trauma, Margot spoke volumes about the hospital staff. “From the moment we arrived at the hospital the staff were so incredibly kind and caring and empathetic,” she said. “They cried when we cried; they laughed with us when Toby did something cute or funny. “The love and care the staff showed for Toby and our other kids was like they were their own. “The hospital even held me as an inpatient so I could be close to Toby 24 hours a day, and even allowed Tom to sleep on a mattress next to our bedside.” Margot’s aim, now, is to raise awareness of John Hunter Children’s Hospital, particularly among

her hometown, by entering a team in the City2Surf fun run in Sydney this Sunday 12 August. A new $100,000 fitness trail at Warners Bay combines a range of the latest outdoor exercise equipment with some of Lake Macquarie’s most spectacular waterfront views. The 960-metre trail starts on The Esplanade foreshore, opposite the intersection with Seaman Avenue, and features four exercise stations at regular intervals along the lake’s shore. The trail includes a multi-bench at its start point, a sit-up bench at the 350-metre mark, a step-up station at the 700-metre mark and a combination full-body exercise unit at the finish line. “The trail is another great step in our ongoing goal to promote active, healthy lifestyles and create vibrant communities,” Lake Macquarie council’s manager of community planning, Wes Hain, said. Construction was funded through local developer contributions. The council opened another fitness trail in Speers Point late last year. Outdoor fitness equipment has also been installed at the soon-to-be-opened Pasterfield Sports Complex at Cameron Park.

Two hundred years have passed since construction began on the boldest harbour project of the convict era. A foundation stone was laid at Macquarie Pier, now known as Nobbys breakwall, by Governor Lachlan Macquarie himself on 5 August 1818. Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes led a short commemoration and three cheers on Sunday. “The Macquarie Pier, or breakwater, assured stronger coal profits for the British Empire before eventually facilitating an annual export trade in excess of 150 million tonnes a year as a major economic contributor, not only for Newcastle, but the entire state and nation,” Cr Nelmes said. “The monumental construction project, which took a staggering 28 years to complete, shaped the landscape of the city’s colonial history and heritage, transforming shoals into what we now know as the iconic Nobbys Beach.” Years later, heavy seas breached the breakwater before huge sandstone blocks hauled from a Waratah quarry reinforced it and the work was finally completed in 1872.

A classic European-style dining experience has been earmarked for Maitland’s The Riverlink Building. Maitland council announced this week that Daniel O’Leary would open COQUUN in September following a public expression of interest process. Mr O’Leary, who has roots in Maitland and boasts almost a decade of experience in hospitality, is set to open the restaurant alongside lifelong friend and fellow local Anthony Ford. “I’m thrilled to get the keys and I can’t wait to get into the restaurant and get to work,” Mr O’Leary said. “It’s a wonderful space in an amazing location and I’m looking forward to creating some delicious food that I hope people will enjoy. “When people come to COQUUN, I hope it makes them feel like they are in a public living room sitting by the Hunter River.” The Riverlink Building was part of the $9.92 million second component of The Levee Development, which also included the Bourke Street Link and upgrades to the Riverwalk.

CrossFit athlete’s strong finish Hunter athlete Judith Tynan finished eighth overall in the women’s 55-59 age category at the 2018 CrossFit Games in Madison, Wisconsin. Tynan, one of only three women in the Australasian region to compete in the division, picked up 398 points over the five days of competition. Overall champion, Mary Beth Prodromides, ended on 626 points, well clear of second placed Bianca Williams on 548. Tynan, a 55-year-old mother and business owner from Chisholm, had trained multiple times a day, six days a week to prepare for a series of unknown events. This year’s CrossFit Games, which attracts some of the fittest men and women on earth, took place from 1 to 5 August.

Preheat oven to 180Â°C and line 20 muffin holes with paper cases. Combine eggs and sugar in a large bowl and place over a saucepan of gently simmering water. Whisk mixture for 3 minutes until eggs are warm to the touch and starting to foam up. Remove bowl from pan, place on a tea towel and immediately beat with an electric mixer on high for 8 minutes, until very pale and tripled in volume. Gently heat butter and coconut milk until butter is melted. Sift a third of the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder and salt) into egg mixture and fold in. Pour in half the coconut milk mixture and stir to combine. Repeat with remaining flour and milk, ending with flour mixture. Add shredded coconut to batter and gently fold to combine. Spoon batter into paper cases and bake until golden, for approximately 12 minutes. Remove from pan and cool completely on a wire rack. Top with a dollop of cooled passionfruit curd to serve.

Blue Mountains three-piece Cloud Control and Brisbane band Last Dinosaurs will headline the 2018 Bitter and Twisted Boutique Beer Festival when it returns to Maitland Gaol in November. With hits including Treetops, Rainbow City and There’s Nothing In The Water We Can’t Fight, Cloud Control first came on the scene in 2008 following the release of their self-titled EP. Cessnock will roll out the red carpet for Australia’s largest-scale Pink Floyd concept show on Friday 24 August. Celebrating 35 years since Pink Floyd last toured The Wall, Echoes of Pink Floyd will perform tracks from the band’s iconic 1979 album, engaging local schools to form the Brick in the Wall choir. The tour also celebrates 50 years since Pink Floyd released their first album, with a two-hour, full-scale concert production at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre.

With a spectacular light show, synchronised with the music and designed to recreate the sights and emotions of a genuine Pink Floyd concert, Echoes of Pink Floyd is the only act that tours with trusses that support an incredible fourmetre circle, which can project 6000 lumens video. Canberra-based ceramicist Joanne Searle is set to hold her second exhibition and weekend workshop in the region at Newcastle Studio Potters. Searle is an Associate Lecturer at the Australian National University (ANU)’s Ceramics Workshop. Earlier this year, she co-founded Clay Studio Canberra, located in an old horticulture building in the south of Canberra. Clay Studio Canberra offers classes for beginners through to advanced wheel throwers. This exhibition, titled Soundmark, draws together several lines of enquiry that are central to her practice: place, sound, and markmaking. Searle finds inspiration from artists across a wide range of media, such as drawing, glass and ceramics, including visual artist Hannah Quinliven and the work of

glass artist Mel Douglas. Searle’s husband Mark owns a music production business. She met Janet DeBoos at her local high school open night. Janet offered her a week-long work experience. A further week with Scottish potter Fergus Stewart at the Strathnairn Arts Centre, Holt Canberra gave her firsthand experience of ceramics education and she was keen to learn. In 2004, she participated in the Asia/Pacific workshop for students and faculty at the University of Hawaii. She recently travelled to the United Kingdom through the ANU’s Outside Studies Program to undertake research into the crossdisciplinary field of print-based ceramics. In the masterclass with Jeffery Sarmiento, Reader in Glass at The National Glass Centre, University of

Joanne Searle will pass on her knowledge through a workshop in Newcastle.

Sunderland, UK, she learned how to print water-based on-glaze decals using a silk screen method. Searle’s thin porcelain vessels are decorated using a monotype printmaking process adapted for ceramics, allowing her to further explore qualities of impermanence through process. Layering thin veneers of colour and clay, mark-making and erosion, she is able to echo transitional qualities in her work. My favourite things TRAVEL I love travelling, both here in Australia and overseas. Last year, I went on a fact-finding journey to the Northern Territory. I am fortunate to call Australia home and yet be able to see remote parts of the world.

Geraldine Moran CENTRE FOR HOPE FOUNDER

Geraldine Moran is the CEO, founder and driving force behind Windale’s Centre For Hope. She was motivated to start the centre after seeing a little girl being kicked by an adult and unable to help. The image haunted her and was the trigger for the centre – a space where kids know they are worth something and can follow their dreams. With the vision to empower young disadvantaged people to respect themselves, to connect to the wider community and to create an inspired life, Geraldine founded the not-for-profit organisation in 2011 as a helping hand for six to 18-year-olds. This mentoring and coaching is supported by high-impact projects such as Wheels for Hope, a bike shed program at Mt Hutton, Kurri Kurri and Raymond Terrace; a drop-in centre, homework and cultural centre for primary students; a weekly parents group in Lake Macquarie; and a newly-opened centre in Port Stephens. With a wealth of life experiences under her belt, Geraldine is also an author and speaker. She started her professional career as a solicitor, then moved to psychology and gained a Masters of Analytical Psychology before training as a life coach. Somewhere, she manages to fit in being a wife and mother. 58

MUSIC Music is a great way to relax. I am less likely to attend a concert these days but I love all kinds of music. I am loving Hilltop Hoods’ new single Clark Griswold. The young people we work with keep me engaged in what’s current.
