This week... From the editor The older I get, the more I appreciate the little things in life. Warm winter sun that you can soak up like a cat without being burnt to a crisp. Sunday lunch with the family, spent sharing good conversation over an abundant, food-coma-inducing spread. A rare evening free of after-hours commitments, where (especially in winter) you can retreat indoors, put your jammies on and kick back, guilt-free. These are a few of my favourite things! Don’t get me wrong, I love a good social outing as much as the next person (and am regularly invited to attend events as editor), but lately, I’ve found equally as much joy in the art of slowing down and being present. It could be as simple as listening to my body and going to bed early, rather than engaging in a mindless cycle of social media app-checking; or carving out a few hours on a Sunday afternoon to bake. Less is more. I read an article recently about the rise of JOMO: the joy of missing out. You might have heard of FOMO, or the fear of missing out, but, in contrast, JOMO frees you from those shackles, and says, it’s OK – more satisfying, even – to sit this one out and recharge your batteries. Imagine turning down a party invitation to indulge in a massage or pedicure? Lifechanging stuff. - Georgia Osland

news International race on radar Lake Macquarie Airport has zeroed in on an international race that attracts a worldwide audience of about 400 million people. The Red Bull Air Race World Championship, established in 2003, is a series in which pilots look to navigate a challenging obstacle course in the fastest time. Abu Dhabi, Cannes (France), Chiba (Japan) and Budapest have all hosted races so far this year, with Russia’s Kazan up next from 25 to 26 August. Lake Macquarie council sought to host the competition in 2016 but its bid fell short, reportedly due to a lack of funding from the state government. However, Australia’s sole Red Bull Air Race pilot, Matt Hall, who is part of a consortium that acquired Lake Macquarie Airport four years ago, believes the race is a “real
possibility” this time around. “The venue is perfect for it – all it comes down to is getting approvals in place from the state government,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “A rough estimate is that, for every location that hosts a race, they get about €30 to €40 million euros [AU$47 million] and about 100,000 people come on-site – many of them are tourists. “There’s also the 400 million who watch it worldwide and think: ‘Gee, that looks good, I might go there next year.’ “It’ll just be a massive [economic] injection if it goes ahead.” Hall currently leads the 2018 Red Bull Air Race standings in the Master Class with 45 points, two clear of second-placed American Michael Goulian. Meanwhile, the council has approved Lake Macquarie Airport’s

plans for a $2.8 million expansion. The owner consortium’s development applications consisted of four buildings adjacent to the Pacific Highway, three of which are hangars with office space and pilots’ briefing rooms. The final building, across from the main entrance, will house a terminal and a two-storey café restaurant. There will also be two hangars on the opposite side of the hardstand area.
Hall says the airport’s expansion will provide a much-needed tourism and employment boost in the area. “Everything will have a purpose and it’ll be aesthetically pleasing,” he says. “The restaurant and café – they’ll require people to be working – and we think people will want to stop out there for a coffee and sandwich.” The airport’s director, Rob Hibberd, says the buildings have been designed to accommodate Continued on page 8.

Compost plant closes the loop Lake Macquarie residents are the first in the Hunter to have access to a designated food and garden waste composting plant. The Lake Macquarie Organics Resource Recovery Facility complements the council’s revamped three-bin waste collection system, under which food scraps will go in green bins alongside garden waste from 30 July. Organic waste will end up at the facility, at Awaba tip, where it will be pasteurised and composted through aeration and used on parks, grounds and sporting fields throughout the city. The facility, operated by German company REMONDIS, is expected to turn over 44,000 tonnes of organic matter a year, which would have otherwise ended up in landfill. Food waste makes up about
one-third of household waste, so, by diverting this from landfill and closing the food consumption loop, it is expected to extend the life of Awaba tip and save an estimated $4 million over the next decade in waste management costs. REMONDIS has been composting garden waste at Awaba on the council’s behalf since 2013, and Lake Macquarie Organics Resource Recovery Facility branch manager, Gunther Neumann, says the company is excited to build upon this. The new plant was supported by a $2 million infrastructure grant from the Environmental Trust through the NSW EPA’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative, funded by the waste levy. Of this, $1.4 million in capital expenditure was allocated towards its construction, and $686,250

towards a program to encourage residents to collect their food and garden waste. The council has already distributed countertop food scraps bins along with compostable bags, which will be put to use in a few days’ time. With the changeover, green bins will be collected weekly instead of fortnightly, and red-lidded general waste bins will revert from weekly to fortnightly collection. Visit lakemac.com.au/foodgarden-green for more information.
Soiled nappies and incontinence products must still be disposed of in red-lidded general waste bins under Lake Macquarie council’s greener three-bin system. The council conducted a Community Nappy Trial of 100 homes in 2014 and found that, in most cases, where general waste bins were collected fortnightly instead of weekly, bin capacity and smell were not major concerns. However, for those worried about odour when general waste bins switch to fortnightly collection from 30 July, the council recommends the following strategies: empty the contents of soiled nappies in the toilet before disposing; seal nappies tightly in plastic bags; store your garbage bin out of direct sunlight; and consider using odourneutralising products like cat litter.

Superheroes swoop in Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s probably just a superhero on a bike. This year’s Bikers for Kids Newcastle Toy Run will launch with a special Christmas in July celebration at Wickham Park Hotel on Saturday 28 July. The 2018 theme, ‘superheroes’, has been inspired by a number of incredible costumes from last
year’s toy run, which raised more than $36,000 in cash and provided about 4,200 families with toys and gifts from the Salvation Army. Each December, an estimated 10,000 bikes from Newcastle and beyond roar into action for a vibrant fundraiser unlike any other. Bikers for Kids chairman-elect, Daryn Young, says the Hunter
Region’s response to the event is “unreal”. “There are lawyers, local celebrities and young boys on scooters – everyone who rides gets involved and it’s all for the kids,” he says. “It brings plenty of enjoyment to see the smile on their faces.” The Christmas in July event will see a caped crusader or two appear at the hotel, while the community is invited to bring loose change and help kick-off the fundraising drive. Celebrations are set to take place under the Christmas tree in the beer garden from 3pm until 6pm, with bluegrass legends Doc & the Delegates to provide live entertainment. The toy run has raised more than $250,000 in cash donations and toys in the past five years. Visit newcastletoyrun.com.au for more information or to donate. - Ben Murphy
“Curtain being raised” on city A stretch of road between Worth Place and Darby Street in Newcastle’s CBD has reopened to traffic this week. The completed portion of the light rail on Hunter Street represents about 40% of the on-road construction zone, and now includes widened footpaths, landscaping and an upgraded road surface. “The curtain is being raised on a new and improved Newcastle city centre,” parliamentary secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said. “[It] has been a big year of construction in the city, and there is a phenomenal amount of work which has taken place. “We’ve upgraded Newcastle’s centuryold sewer network, laid the fibre-optic ‘spine’ to enable the city’s smart future, and now we’re returning traffic and parking to a major stretch of the city’s main street.” Light rail services are on track to start early next year.

Newcastle council cuts business group’s funds Newcastle Now has expressed shock at a decision to cut its funds amid a review of the business improvement association (BIA). Newcastle council’s chief executive, Jeremy Bath, claimed the inner-city BIA had received annual funding of almost $850,000 since at least 2013 without providing a yearly business plan. This is reportedly required under the Funding and Service Deed of Arrangement, signed by both parties and endorsed by the elected council in 2011. Newcastle council stated the funding deed aimed to ensure strong governance and transparency, with the business plan detailing how Newcastle Now intended to spend its funds, which were raised via levies paid by innercity commercial property owners. The council advised Newcastle Now to refrain from spending further rate monies levied on businesses until the BIA met its obligations, and that the council would arrange for an independent review of past funding practices. “Council is required to ensure that all transactions by Newcastle Now and, for that matter, all BIAs, are administered strictly in accordance with the deed,” Mr Bath said.
In response, Newcastle Now’s executive manager, Richard Christian, said the group had been fulfilling its reporting obligations to the council. He added the request to alter the format of the business plan they submit was at odds with a process in place since 2015. “The format that [BIAs] were to use to prepare business plans was changed by council staff in 2015, at which point Newcastle Now collaborated with council to develop and submit a four-year strategic plan, consistent with council’s own planning process,” Mr Christian said. “We have been submitting an operational plan, including a budget, on a six-monthly basis since this time. “Recent correspondence from council confirmed that the ‘business plan template was dumped.’” Mr Christian said the council had sent a representative to all of Newcastle Now’s meetings and no issues were flagged. A motion at the council’s meeting on Tuesday called for the release of $100,000 of levy money and another $100,000 of council funds to support the small business assistance program. - Ben Murphy
Boost for popular festival Maitland Riverlights Multicultural Festival will receive a $20,000 grant to support marketing of the event in October. Now in its seventh year, Riverlights’ last event attracted more than 11,000 people to The Levee Central Maitland, and organisers are hoping to boost that figure by promoting the festival outside of the Hunter Region. “We know that local people love the colour, music, dance, tastes and
sounds of Riverlights,” Maitland mayor, Loretta Baker, said. “It’s a celebration of Maitland’s culturally-diverse community and, with the grant funding, we hope to be able to share our diversity and celebrate with even more visitors.” The state government grant came under the Destination NSW Regional Flagship Events Program. The Riverlights festival will take place on Saturday 13 October from 3pm to 9pm.

news New vibe after makeover Toronto’s main street, The Boulevarde, has a fresh look and a new cosmopolitan vibe thanks to the completion of more than $4 million in streetscape works. The Toronto Streetscape Master Plan has delivered wide, level footpaths; outdoor dining areas; shade structures and new landscaping. Toronto Chamber of Commerce and Industry Secretary, Brenda Hartmire, said the new promenade-style footpaths made it much easier to get around. “Toronto business owners are very keen to show off our new town centre and we encourage people to come and enjoy the improved shopping and dining environment,” Ms Hartmire said.
To celebrate the completion of the streetscape works, local businesses have banded together to encourage visits to the town centre through a Shop Local, Shop in Toronto campaign in July. Lake Macquarie council will now undertake roadworks on The Boulevarde to complete the beautification project. This will involve the relocation of old water mains and an upgrade to the road surface. The council stated this work would be staged, in consultation with local businesses.

Trans-Tasman flights ahead Newcastle Airport will deliver direct flights to New Zealand for the first time in 16 years on the eve of this year’s Supercars event. Virgin Australia, a major partner of the Supercars Championship, is set to operate three return services per week from Newcastle to Auckland during the peak holiday period from 22 November to 17 February. Newcastle 500 event manager, Kurt Sakzewski, said the timing was perfect. “This is great news for the event as we know how strong and passionate our support base is in New Zealand and how many people already travel across for Supercars events,” he said. “We expect this will grow our visitation number further with the ability to entice New Zealanders with the luxury of having direct
flights that can take them straight to the door. “Coupled with the fact there is every likelihood at least two New Zealanders will be in the mix for a championship, this is very exciting news.” The Newcastle 500 race, which debuted in 2017, will take place from 23 to 25 November. Virgin Australia will become the first airline to provide an international service from the upgraded Newcastle Airport terminal. Newcastle Airport chief executive, Peter Cock, said community support for direct international services had been extremely strong. “New Zealand is our numberone unserved market, so it is fitting that the first flight through our new international facilities will be

servicing Auckland,” he said. “This seasonal flight is a huge step forward in becoming a second international gateway into NSW.” According to Tourism Australia and Tourism New Zealand, about 2.8 million travellers move between the two nations each year. Virgin Australia’s general manager of network, revenue and alliances, Russell Shaw, said the airline was proud to provide regional
NSW with increased travel choices. “With this direct flight, local residents will arrive in Auckland within three hours, ensuring they have more time to enjoy the breathtaking sights and incredible experiences New Zealand is famous for,” he said. “The Greater Hunter Region will also benefit from increased tourism opportunities.” - Ben Murphy

A series of roadworks at the John Hunter Hospital campus will aim to improve traffic flow in the short-term as the community awaits the final stage of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass. The roadworks will see the stretch alongside the front of the hospital and main carparks turned into a two-way thoroughfare, so cars do not have to travel around the hospital if exiting from the carpark near the pathology building. The work, expected to take about six weeks, will be completed at night and on weekends to limit disruption. Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery welcomed news of the roadworks. “While it won’t stop the major congestion, it will hopefully ease some of the significant delays we are seeing at the hospital on a daily basis,” she said. “Only the construction of the second entrance and the Newcastle Inner City Bypass stage five will solve the major traffic issues.”
Drivers needed for city’s light rail network Keolis Downer Hunter is on the lookout for drivers and control staff ahead of light rail tests in Newcastle later this year. About 20 additional staff will be required to operate the system. “Construction is drawing to a close and testing for Newcastle Light Rail will start in the coming months, which means we need drivers ready to go,” director of corporate affairs, Andrew Fletcher, said. Keolis Downer employs more than 400 staff across bus and ferry operations and administration.

sport Jets trial in Maitland a lot from the six weeks that I was there,” he told Newcastle Weekly. The Jets capped an impressive resurgence last season by finishing second to premiers Sydney FC and then reaching the grand final. Central Coast, in contrast, have added several new recruits and a premiership-winning coach, Mike Mulvey, in a bid to prevent three wooden spoons in the past four seasons. Apart from trials in Northern NSW, Newcastle’s busy preseason has also included a trip to China for the Free Trade Port Super Champions Cup, while the club will soon head to Spain for three friendly matches. Petratos said he was excited to take on the Mariners in Maitland and travel around with the squad. “It’s good to come and see these
facilities [in Maitland] and play at these fields – the people are very welcoming and I think the game here will be great against Central Coast,” he said. “We’ll be going to Spain too, which will help us to get used to the travelling just in case we’re in the
Asian Champions League and get through the qualifying there.” The Jets will face Central Coast on Saturday 25 August from 3pm. Tickets can be bought via maitlandevents.com.au from Monday 30 July. - Ben Murphy

Familial feel at heart of production Young People’s Theatre’s adaptation of the timeless classic Pinocchio is a real family affair, from the cast to the audience. This year’s production, which has a rotating cast of 32 apiece, stars fathers Steve Bernasconi and Jean Stora as Geppetto, and their respective children – including James Bernasconi, who plays the titular character alongside Jack Van Esfield and Nikolai Snedden. Director Michael Nolan says this familial feel extends beyond the stage. “People will tell us they once took their kids to see Pinocchio and now they’re here with their grandkids,” Nolan tells Newcastle Weekly. Pinocchio was first adapted by Young People’s Theatre founders William and Betty Ford, as one of 12 pantomimes they penned with original music. It was first performed in the 1950s, and, most recently, in 2002. “We’re proud to wear our production t-shirts to Coles and Woolies after rehearsals, because
people recognise them,” Nolan adds. “They’ll stop to tell us how their great grandmother took them along, or their neighbour’s cousin was in the original cast.” Pinocchio the Disney film was released in 1940, based on Carlo Collodi’s 1883 novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio. YPT’s adaptation is showing at the Hamilton theatre until Saturday 18 August. Book online at ypt.org.au/Pinocchio

cover story Fletcher woman Rachel Davis in her salon. Photo: Peter Stoop
Putting on a brave face Bravery is one thing single mother-of-two Rachel Davis does not lack. The Fletcher woman lost her mother, Judy, to breast cancer in 2009, during which time her marriage also broke down. With two young sons, then aged three and nine months, Ms Davis was devastated that they would never know the depth of their grandmother’s love. But, through all of the heartbreak and anguish, there was a silver lining. After Judy was diagnosed in 2004, she switched to an organic diet and lifestyle to help give her body a fighting chance. However, Ms Davis – a hairdresser and makeup artist by trade – soon became alarmed by the sheer number of harmful, synthetic ingredients in many beauty and haircare ranges. So, in 2014, Brave Cosmetics was born: a natural, toxin-free line, created in Judy’s honour.
“Mum was so beautiful; she had an inner glow that she only enhanced with a bit of makeup,” Ms Davis told Newcastle Weekly. “As a person, she was also honest, and that’s my mission behind Brave Cosmetics: to keep it honest, open, and transparent.” Now, Ms Davis wants to help others with her Lifesaving Cosmetics charitable range. It started with a partnership last November with Love Your Sister, founded by Australian actor Samuel Johnson and his sister, Connie, to raise funds for cancer research. Sadly, Connie lost her third battle with cancer two months prior. Moved by this, Ms Davis created a F*ck Cancer lipstick in two shades, which she started selling through her website, with half of the proceeds going to Love Your Sister. This September, Ms Davis will do the same with Newcastle-based charity Got Your Back Sista,
which helps women affected by domestic violence. This time, she’s launching three products – a lipstick, lipliner and lip gloss – in three different colours. But she’s not going to stop there. Ms Davis is already looking into partnering with other local not-for-profit organisations, including Newcastle refuge Jenny’s Place and the Hunter Medical Research Institute. - Georgia Osland

Trending: cement finish Move over subway tiles, there’s a new trend in town. WITH HOME EDITOR, GEORGIA OSLAND
With open-plan living and indoor/outdoor flow an important design element in modern homes, it’s little wonder we’ve embraced earthy materials. The ‘transterior’ trend is all about unifying indoor and outdoor elements to create one cohesive space. Using a cement finish, such as in bathroom or kitchen tiles or even in flooring, is one way to achieve this raw, down-to-earth feel. You can use genuine cement tiles or glazed ceramic tiles to give this natural look. Patterned encaustic tiles are making a comeback on feature walls and splashbacks. No matter what you choose, try Beaumont Tiles’ [beaumont-tiles.com.au] 14 golden rules of tiling for the perfect finish: • Tiles must be dry and the back of the tile clean. • The surface to be tiled should be even and free from grease, wax, oil, and curing compounds. • Apply adhesive using the appropriate notched towel. Always apply horizontally, rather than in a swirling motion.
• Each tile should make adequate contact with adhesive. Press tiles firmly into the adhesive bed to ensure no voids occur beneath tiles. • Every now and then, lift a tile to check the adhesive is working. • Don’t fix tiles over adhesive that has been left to dry and form a skin. • Allow adhesive to set before grouting – usually no less than 24 hours. • Adhesives must be used strictly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. • To achieve greater adhesion, dampen porous concrete with water before tiling with cementbased adhesives. • Remove any loose powder from the backs of tiles. • Use appropriate movement joints and don’t tile over construction joints. • For thin bed fixing of tiles, the minimum finished thickness of the adhesive should not be less than 3mm. • Bridge hairline cracks of up to 2mm in concrete. • Don’t store tiles in direct sunlight before fixing.

Could your kitchen do with a facelift...at less cost?
Cacti troubles A buying mission to Sydney demonstrated just how devastating winter can be on plant life. Even in heated glasshouses, plants were brown and suffering, particularly Fiddleaf Fig. I was surprised to see cacti and succulents damaged in a covered area. One would imagine cacti and succulents like to grow in a hot spot, true, but they also perform quite well inside and in shady areas if not overwatered. The one thing they don’t like, is frost. When potting cacti and succulents it is essential to have a free-draining mix – ideally one that contains coarse river sand. Succulents and cacti require nutrients, just like other plants, however, they require far less food than other plant families. Feed cacti and succulents twice yearly with a low-nitrogen plant food. Water wise, too little is better

than too much; the best way to water is to thoroughly saturate the pot, then let it dry out. Even though these plants are hardy, they can be prone to pests such as scale and mealy bug.

PICK OF THE WEEK Warrior
Beetlejuice
Friday, NBN, 10.45pm, M (2011) Joel Edgerton has been climbing further and further up the star ladder of late and this gritty film is one reason why. He plays Brendan, the estranged brother of Tommy (Tom Hardy, pictured) and son of former pro-boxer Paddy (Nick Nolte). The men have fighting in their veins and when money troubles hit home, they jump in the ring to compete in a mixed-martial arts tournament. But the cuts and bruises are only surface-level – it’s the emotional turmoil their father inflicted on them as boys that runs far deeper.
Friday
Saturday, NBN, 11.45pm, M (1988) One-time Disney animator Tim Burton (he of Edward Scissorhands and Alice in Wonderland fame) concocted this oddball enterprise that features a virtuoso slot by Michael Keaton as the eponymous evildoer, a nutty ghoul hired by a newly dead couple (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) determined to drive out prospectors from their prized New England home. Imbued with wry sensibility and high spirit, a weak story gains from smart gimmickry. Plaudits go to Winona Ryder as a goth – an excellent choice of casting.
The Blue Lagoon
Wednesday, SBS VICELAND, 8.30pm, M (1980) In the tradition of Adam and Eve, a very young and scantily clad Brooke Shields (aged 15) does a titillating version of the breaststroke in this tired take of the oft- played tale of a boy and girl who grow up on the same deserted island where they discover, among other things, sex. Their frustration is second to the viewer’s in this stupid story that should be filed next to Bo Derek’s Bolero, and left there.

Pressures and responsibilities at work will start to mount and she may feel the strain of the extra workload. Her bank balance will look extremely positive. Property is another feature of the year ahead and she may find herself either buying or investing in real estate. In her personal life, she will be searching for spiritual fulfilment.

ARIES: 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER: 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA: 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN: 22 DEC – 20 JAN
The Full Moon on the 28th falls in your friendship zone. A friend may be going through a difficult time or you may find yourself getting annoyed by the actions of others. If relationships aren’t your cup of tea, a creative adventure suggested by a friend could prove fulfilling.
The Full Moon on the 28th indicates a need to pay attention to practical affairs that might have been neglected recently. This is not a time to cut corners or to take unnecessary risks. Also, don’t let yourself be talked into anything you don’t want to do.
Mercury turns retrograde on the 27th and a difference with a friend or colleague could leave you fuming, as it seems you’ve met your match. The Full Moon on the 28th indicates you may be feeling insecure over your work situation, but remember your partner also requires reassurance.
TAURUS: 21 APR – 21 MAY
LEO: 23 JULY – 23 AUG
The Full Moon on the 28th indicates that the demands of your children or younger people may become a little intolerable. If you are involved in renovations or a creative project, something is going to become rather challenging and will require some deep thought to resolve.
The Full Moon on the 28th falls in your career zone making it difficult to get any sense out of anyone. Be sure to get clarity and check your work carefully before signing off. Family members may drop in unexpectedly and could bring you a gift which is extremely useful.
The Full Moon on the 28th indicates that someone close to you is weighed down by worry or low self-esteem. Your best course of action is to do something practical to increase their confidence rather than just be a sounding post. With Mars in Leo, it is time for action.
SCORPIO: 24 OCT – 22 NOV
The Full Moon falls directly in your sign on the 28th making you somewhat hypersensitive; a friend might make an off-the-cuff remark you find hurtful but the chances of it being deliberate are very slim. Saturn Retrograde makes it difficult to concentrate, so make a list and prioritise.
GEMINI: 22 MAY – 21 JUNE
VIRGO: 24 AUG – 23 SEPT
The 28 July Full Moon indicates that when important decisions need to be made at work, be sure your voice and opinions are heard by those that matter! But be careful of what you may be letting yourself in for by agreeing to a course of action.
The Full Moon on 28 June indicates there will be a new routine or procedure at work that will test your confidence and have you following strict directions. This is the time to establish good work habits and to find a way to deal with difficult colleagues.
The Full Moon on the 28th indicates that you will become over-sensitive, especially over family issues. Also, unexpected repairs may be needed for household items. Some of you will fall in love with or have people joining your family who come from different cultural backgrounds.
SAGITTARIUS: 23 NOV – 21 DEC The Full Moon on the 28th warns you to be careful of what you say; you may try to tackle someone in authority, only to find that they walk all over you. So be careful of having foot in mouth disease at work. You don’t want to upset the boss!
It's Plastic Free July! Hyde & Silk can help with reuseable products
AQUARIUS: 21 JAN – 19 FEB
PISCES: 20 FEB – 20 MAR The 28 July Full Moon indicates you will have confusing personal and professional options to weigh up. You need a clear mind to make the best choice. Saturn Retrograde causes relationship issues to emerge; those who know you will recognise your bottomless capacity for empathy.

Loads of family fun to be had New from Crown & Andrews and Goliath Games is Loaded Lemons and Build or Boom. Loaded Lemons is a fun action game requiring good memory. Follow the lemons as they move around the table and when the timer stops, guess if your lemon squirts or not. Guess right or get soaked! Anyone who guessed correctly gets a lemon chip and the first to collect three chips wins the game. Build or Boom is the ultimate block-stacking game for the whole family. Players step in line and see who can be the first to bring the blueprint cards to life. But there’s only room for one builder in town. RRP $29 each, available exclusively at BIG W and K-Mart, respectively.

Family is everything.
NEWCASTLE TOY RUN
It proves we have big hearts and, as a community, we are connected in a passion to help others. Knowing that we have the ability to help so many children in the Hunter Region is an absolute rush.
Daryn Young
RIDING
Riding gives me a sense of freedom.
BIKERS FOR KIDS CHAIRMAN
Daryn’s first toy run was back in 1986 and every year he still gets the same overwhelming sense of community involvement and spirit as he did on that first ride. His passion for the toy run has grown, more so after having children of his own. He is now chairman of the Bikers for Kids Newcastle Toy Run, which is a family legacy, and he hopes that his enthusiasm will inspire his children and grandchildren to be involved in the event. Daryn has witnessed the way the toy run has changed the perception of bikers in his community, with the annual event challenging stereotypes and proving that the motorcycle community is made up of people from all walks of life and, when they come together, they achieve great things for those in need. 50
BARBECUE
There is nothing better than spending time with friends and family, and what more enjoyable way is there than with a barbecue? It’s the Aussie way.
CAMPING
A time to get away, to relax with family and friends, to be able to enjoy life and this great country we live in.
