Sharing is caring FARMERS BRING BOUNTIFUL RELIEF TO DROUGHT-AFFECTED
Newcastle Weekly contents
thursday 19 July 2018
This week... From the editor It’s heartening to see farmers supporting farmers in the Hunter Valley. As you’ll read in this week’s cover story, on page 15, Lower Hunter farmers have banded together to help their friends in the Upper Hunter, which remains in severe drought. Down here, we have enjoyed some bouts of heavy rain, but it takes much more than that to break a drought, and, until that happens, farmers whose livelihoods depend on the earth’s bounty struggle to get by. Slow Food Hunter Valley leader Amorelle Dempster is the woman behind the initiative. Having built Maitland’s Slow Food Earth Market from scratch last year, Amorelle is no stranger to rallying the troops to serve the community. Of course, this doesn’t happen overnight, but it is marvellous to see how the drought relief project has come together. On that note, I’d like to thank the many generous people who have already donated to my Leaders Leap fundraising campaign for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. There are just three weeks this Friday until I abseil down the face of McDonald Jones Stadium with 24 gutsy others. Eeek! There’s still time to donate. news “Investment in change” for young people An innovative project will aim to address the issue of violence perpetrated by young people across the Port Stephens and Lower and Upper Hunter regions. The federal government’s $582,361 contribution towards the initiative has been described as an “investment in change”. University of Newcastle’s head of discipline for social work, Dr Tamara Blakemore, will lead the two-year project. She says it started with a pilot conducted in the Lower Hunter at the invitation of local children’s magistrate Tracy Sheedy. “[Ms Sheedy] came to us, observing that young people before her for criminal matters were frequently disengaged from education and she urged us to help her, and other practitioners, better understand the lives of these young people and the links between their
situations and experiences,” Dr Blakemore tells Newcastle Weekly. During the pilot work, Dr Blakemore found practitioners commonly spoke about crime as a means of communication – a way for young people to redistribute power and control; and as connection – a way of finding and forming identity and belonging. “A common and undeniable thread in our conversations with practitioners was the role of trauma in the lives of young people they worked with,” Dr Blakemore says. Now, the project will provide what frontline workers across sectors in the region see as an unmet need – appropriate and available support for young people who perpetrate violence in their relationships with peers, partners, parents and carers. Specifically aimed at youth aged
between 10 and 17, it will explore the role of violence in their lives and help them to develop and strengthen skills such as nonviolent conflict resolution, problem solving, empathetic and respectful communication, and self-regulation. Dr Blakemore says it is set to work in “trauma-informed” and “culturally-safe” ways. “In doing so, it recognises the reality that trauma, across its many forms, is likely to be a reality in the lives of these young people and that the ways we work with them needs to be sensitive and responsive to that,” she says. For magistrate Sheedy, a large part of her workload is comprised of young people charged with interpersonal violence offences. She believes, unless they are assisted to address the issues that have led to their behaviour, it is likely

to continue into adulthood. “While adult male perpetrators can be referred to a Men’s Behaviour Change program, there is currently no equivalent for young people,” magistrate Sheedy says. More than 100 young people are expected to access the program when it launches later this year. - Ben Murphy

news Safety paramount on busy roads Wallsend state MP Sonia Hornery has called on Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) to come clean on its reasons behind a speed limit reduction on several busy arterial roads. Ms Hornery quizzed Police Minister, Troy Grant, about the number of speeding offences issued along the 8.5-kilometre stretch from Thomas Street to Newcastle and Griffiths roads for the period of 11 March to 4 June 2018, as well as the same timeframe in 2017. She claimed that, despite RMS advising her speeding and crash rates were behind the decision to reduce the speed limit from 70km/hr to 60km/ hr, only two speeding infringements had been issued during these periods. “This again shows the RMS has blatantly lied about the reasons used to justify the speed limit reduction,” she said. “As a local member, I want to be able to have the conversation with my community about why a state government department made a decision and give them the opportunity to provide me with feedback. “I am not advocating for the speed limit to be

reinstated, my community just want to know the reasons why.” In response, an RMS spokesperson said, in the five years to June 2016, there were 382 crashes, including 272 injury crashes, along the connecting roads of Thomas Street and Newcastle and Griffiths roads. “The crash rate per kilometre was almost five times higher than the usual rate for other urban arterial roads with a 70km/hr speed limit,” the spokesperson told Newcastle Weekly. “RMS introduced a 60km/hr speed limit following a speed zone review, which assessed a number of factors, including crash history, road geometry, road environment, traffic volumes, and the number of access points. “The review was carried out in consultation with Newcastle City Council and NSW Police.” RMS added the connecting roads travelled through areas with a high concentration of residential and commercial development, including Newcastle Showground, Hamilton North Public School, Broadmeadow commercial area, McDonald Jones Stadium and Jesmond shopping centre.

“With consideration of the high traffic volumes, number of driveways and intersections, the hilly road alignments and concentration of developments in the area, the introduction of reducing the speed limit by 10km/hr in this type of road environment has improved road safety and reduced the risk and severity of crashes for the 40,000 motorists who travel along these connecting roads each day,” the spokesperson said. - Ben Murphy

news Network’s “unprecedented” scale Lake Macquarie will break ground to become the first Australian local government area to create coverage for a smart city network across all populated areas. The launch of the carrier-grade Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) for the Internet of Things (IoT) took place at Warners Bay last week. Carrier-grade refers to a network that is extremely reliable, well-tested and proven in its capabilities, while the IoT can be described as a network of physical objects – vehicles, machines, home appliances, and more – that use sensors and other technology to connect and exchange data over the internet. Dantia, the business arm of Lake Macquarie council, claimed the major infrastructure commitment was a game-changer for the region. “This network is being installed to support citywide initiatives that will enable businesses and enterprise to drive their own IoT projects,” Dantia’s chief executive, Peter Francis, said. “The scale of the Lake Macquarie city infrastructure is unprecedented; it will make
Lake Macquarie the first Australian city to provide 100% commercial-grade IoT network coverage to all populated areas across the LGA, some 650 square kilometres.” The IoT network is under a 20-year contract, delivered via a partnership between Dantia, Lake Macquarie council, and IoT provider the National Narrowband Network Co (NNNCo). “With this sustainable, long-term approach to infrastructure delivery and the significant incentives for start-ups and businesses, we see Lake Macquarie becoming a major digital and innovation hub that will attract new organisations and jobs to the area,” Mr Francis said. Newcastle council also struck a similar deal with NNNCo to provide a LoRaWAN network earlier this year. Gateways are being installed initially at National Park, Newcastle Region Library, Strzelecki Lookout, Fort Scratchley, Beaumont Street clocktower, Merewether’s Townson Oval and Lynn Oval, Stockton. Newcastle council expects a wide range of smart city applications to improve liveability.
The first phase of the IoT roll-out in Lake Macquarie.
It is tipped to help motorists find parking spaces; better integrate transport services; assist the council to manage parks and recreation facilities; signal when to collect waste; and provide businesses with valuable insights. The roll-out of the network is part of the Hunter Innovation Project – a partnership between the council, Newcastle Now, the University of Newcastle, and Hunter DiGiT.

news Milestone for vital service Clean clothes, warm showers and positive conversations: Orange Sky Laundry has made quite the impact since its brightly-coloured van hit the streets of Newcastle almost a year ago. The world’s first mobile laundry service operates across 22 locations each week to support more than 116,000 Australians who are experiencing homelessness. Newcastle’s van, aptly named Hunter, launched in August 2017 and established 12 shifts across six days alongside the Development and Relief Agency (DARA), which funded the vehicle. It now provides services at Nelson Bay, Morisset, Our Backyard (a private carpark for people sleeping in their cars), Merewether, Belmont, Raymond Terrace, Maitland, and Islington. Newcastle service manager

Karen O’Hara said the charity’s work was well-received, particularly during the winter months. “People who are on the streets have nowhere to go and, with all this wet weather that we’ve had recently, a lot of their clothes have become damp and one man even had all of his clothes wash down the creek,” she said. “So, we help out by doing all of their clothes and then put them in the dryer.” Ms O’Hara said Orange Sky Laundry Newcastle had completed more than 1,000 washes since its inception; increased volunteer numbers from 45 to 67; and clocked about 2,660 hours of positive conversation. She added the organisation was always on the lookout for more volunteers.

“It’s such a fantastic opportunity here and we’re all so supportive of one another,” she said. “I’ve been a volunteer from day one. “I [eventually] became a team leader at Raymond Terrace and, as of April this year, I’m the service
manager and I absolutely love the role.” Orange Sky Laundry Newcastle will celebrate its first birthday on Sunday 29 July at Newcastle Leagues Club. Visit orangesky.org. au for more information. - Ben Murphy

The lack of government funding for mental health services, particularly for young people, will be on the agenda at a community seminar in Newcastle next week. Local mental health advocate and beyondblue ambassador, Craig Hamilton, will join psychiatrist, mental health researcher, author, and former Australian of the Year, Professor Patrick McGorry AO, and Newcastle university associate professor Frances Kay-Lambkin, in a panel discussion at Wests New Lambton on Tuesday 24 July. Mr Hamilton said the seminar was particularly relevant for parents of Higher School Certificate students under pressure. He added young people were looking to better manage their own mental health, and that he would share his own lived experience with Bipolar Disorder to provide
practical tips on the signs and symptoms of poor mental health, as well as lifestyle practices to promote good mental health. Professor McGorry said he would flag the need for mental health reform, including more funding for services and research. “So many young people are too complex for headspace’s primary care service but cannot access more expert and sustained specialist care as they are deemed not in a lifethreatening situation,” Professor McGorry said. “There’s so much awareness, concern and support for mental health issues but we still don’t see the problem being properly funded and addressed.” The Let’s Talk Mental Health seminar will start at 6.30pm. Tickets are available via proticket.com.au or westsnewcastle.com.au
This FREE seminar will give an older person or their family member the latest information on the licensing rules for older drivers and driving assessments. New PFAS position praised Port Stephens MP Kate Washington welcomed the state government’s new position on toxic contamination in, and around, Williamtown. The state government has challenged the federal government’s position on the health impacts of per-and-poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as well as the decision not to support buy-outs of contaminated properties, for the first time in a submission to a senate inquiry. “The contamination became
public three years ago, and only now has the state government woken up to the profound impact it’s having on local residents,” Ms Washington said. “The NSW government’s submission finally suggests they are starting to understand the enormity of the problem.” A public hearing will take place on Tuesday 24 July at the Mercure Hotel, Newcastle Airport, as part of a parliamentary inquiry into the national handling of PFAS contamination.

Recruits from various backgrounds will enter the prison system after completing their training at the Corrective Services NSW Academy in Tomago. Corrections minister David Elliott visited the academy last week to meet 27 trainees prior to their graduation. He said they would be vital additions to the prison system. “The role of a correctional officer can be challenging and the Tomago academy gives Hunter locals the opportunity to skill up without leaving their community,” he said. One of the graduates, Chanel Van Rooyen, said the training would be invaluable in her pursuit of a career in the justice department. “I did learn a lot, especially about

Farmers helping farmers These are dark days for droughtstricken farmers in the Upper Hunter, but not if their friends in the Lower Hunter have anything to do with it. Farmers from the Slow Food Earth Market at The Levee Central Maitland have partnered with the Scone & District CWA to pack and deliver boxes of fresh, homegrown fruit and vegetables to struggling farmers and their families. Volunteers deliver a few dozen boxes on the first Friday of the month to a dinner, hosted by the CWA, at Gundy pub. The farmers come, enjoy a meal together, and leave with a wholesome box of fresh produce. There are no questions asked, just a note that reads: “For you and your family: our farmers are sharing what they have grown on the farms in the Lower Hunter with you. We

hope that it pours with rain. Our fingers are crossed for you.” Initiated by Slow Food Hunter Valley leader Amorelle Dempster, the drought relief project is purely a simple act of kindness. “It’s farmers helping farmers,” Ms Dempster said. “We’d heard it was really dry in the Upper Hunter and we felt a bit helpless. “Our farmers have had the benefit of some rain, with crop growing. Everybody needs to eat, so we thought it was the best thing we could do to help. “When people are in such dire straits, it gives them hope.” According to the NSW Department of Primary Industry’s latest drought maps, the Upper Hunter, Muswellbrook, and parts of Singleton and Cessnock are classed as being in intense drought,

news Home among the gum trees At a time when house hunters are tussling for prime, inner-city real estate, young couple Bree Sanders and Brooke Stevens have found refuge from the rat race in small country town, Stroud. The couple lived on a 190-squaremetre block in Islington, but felt an ever-increasing need to stretch beyond their bricked-in yard. They wanted a bigger plot of land, a character home with a fireplace, and proximity to the town centre so they could still walk to shops and cafés. One morning, they stumbled upon a listing for a small cottage in Stroud on a quarter-acre block that ticked all the boxes. “Suffice to say, we fell in love with the house as soon as we saw it,” Brooke said. “The charm and huge potential for veggie gardens reeled us in, and
we could imagine setting up a home here: a veggie patch, chickens, fresh eggs, and plenty of space for kids to run and play.” Bree and Brooke saw the home for the first time on a Saturday, and their offer was accepted the very next Monday. And so, in August 2016, the couple made their tree change. They welcomed a son, Renni, the following August and, not long after, Brooke completed her Permaculture Design Certificate. The couple slowly transformed their yard to cultivate homegrown mulberries, figs, peaches, olives, nectarines and lemons, and planted young apple trees, raspberry bushes and herb gardens. “The hens get our leftover veggie scraps; they make manure; we compost it; turn it through our garden beds to better our soil; we

grow our vegetables and harvest them; then throw the scraps to the chickens,” Brooke said. “This is our little closed nutrient cycle.” According to Hunter Valley-based real estate agent Denise Haynes, of R & R Property, Bree and Brooke aren’t the only ones fleeing the city in search of an abundant, self-
sustaining permaculture lifestyle. Ms Haynes claims about 20% of the agency’s buyers come from the Newcastle area seeking a tree change. “It promises a more relaxed way of living; essentially, a better life for themselves and their families,” she said. - Georgia Osland

Icy feat funds vital research
Festive fun for everyone People with a disability or mental illness will come together for an inaugural Christmas in July event in Newcastle next Saturday. Seven National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) providers have created a series of free Sydney Hunter Inclusive Network Events (SHINE). Organiser Angela Mellors says it will be a fun, festive day filled with activities, performances and a sausage sizzle. “The idea came about because I wanted to create an inclusive, fun, free event for people with a disability or mental illness and their carers or family members,” she says. “It will provide an opportunity to build new friendships, connect with the community and gain advice and information about services available to them in the region. “We called ourselves SHINE
because we all provide services across Sydney and the Hunter and we plan on running more free events in the future.” The event, which will take place on 28 July from 11am to 3pm at Newcastle PCYC, is set to offer the chance to participate in a drumming and percussion circle; a game of soccer; arts and crafts; a photo booth; and a Christmas photo with Santa. There will also be an opportunity to win an iPad, a signed Newcastle Knights jersey and double passes to the final NRL fixture this season. Ms Mellors says she selected the NDIS organisations because of their ongoing dedication. “They all held the same or similar values, passion for the industry and complemented each other’s services, allowing a holistic approach to the event,” she says.

Brave plungers in the 2018 Big Freeze Newcastle helped to raise $215,000 to fight Motor Neurone Disease. The 24 participants in this year’s fundraiser collectively smashed the original target of $150,000, as they slid into a pool of icy water to raise research funds and awareness. All proceeds went to Fight MND, an organisation dedicated to increasing understanding of the disease, developing treatments, and to finding a cure. A Fight MND spokesperson said the Big Freeze Newcastle was the largest community fundraiser for the charity to date, and this year’s donations will fund three, full-time MND researchers for a year. Organising committee chairperson, Leah Jay, said she was thrilled with the event’s success.

Saving lives and fighting the war on waste with high fashion Over 400 guests attended an exciting collaboration between Hunter Institute of Fashion (HIoF) and Lifeline Hunter Central Coast at 48 Watt St, Newcastle in June with students creating one off couture pieces using only Lifeline product and clothing, destined to landfill. The purpose was to raise awareness of the waste within the textile industry, whilst shedding light on the good things Lifeline retailers are doing by raising awareness amongst a younger youth market. Jason Fox, Lifeline Manager, Retail Operations said Lifeline’s stores play an important role in the war against waste, particularly the war on fast fashion. Australians are the world’s second largest consumers of textiles, buying on average 27 kilograms of new clothing and other textiles each year, more than double the world’s average of 13 kilograms. Mr Fox said inexpensive fast fashion means people are purchasing more items and discarding them more quickly. That fashion ends up going to developing nations and is used as rag but much of it also goes to landfill. According to the ABC documentary “The War on Waste” 6000 kilograms of clothing is dumped in landfill every 10 minutes in Australia.
13 11 14
He said with up to 20 per cent of fabric consumption for fast fashion left on the cutting room floor there are environmental issues before the clothes even get to stores. “We hope that this fashion event helped raise awareness for the importance of sustainability within the textile industry,” Fox said. Students from HIoF created a variety of couture pieces, with one piece produced from over 200 pleated pieces from over 100 items of clothing otherwise destined to landfill. ‘One of our most exciting initiatives is a weekly clothing sale every Saturday from 10am - 3pm at Lifelines 48 Fern St Islington warehouse. People can purchase bulk clothing at $2 per kilogram and so far we have saved over 1.1 tonnes of clothing going to potential landfill,’ Fox said. This was a great event for Newcastle, bringing a variety of industries together to both celebrate positive fashion and raise awareness for the importance of sustainability with the textile industry. By contributing in this way, purchases through Lifeline retail outlets not only have positives for the environment but most importantly save lives! “Proceeds from our shops fund our services including the 13 11 14 line, face to face counselling and other community suicide prevention programs, so shopping at Lifeline helps to protect the environment and save local lives,” Fox concluded.

Knights survive late scare Newcastle heads into this weekend’s clash against the Gold Coast Titans on the back of a morale-boosting 18-16 win over Parramatta. The Knights trailed 10-0 after just 10 minutes at McDonald Jones Stadium last Friday night, but tries to Connor Watson and winger Shaun KennyDowall levelled it up at 10-all at the break. In the second half, playmaker Mitchell Pearce, who made his return to the side, found a hole in the Eels’ line to dive across under the sticks. Parramatta quickly replied in the 55th minute through Corey Norman, before a penalty saw Ken Sio boot the Knights back in front by two. There was a late scare for Newcastle as Eels speedster Bevan French grounded a clever grubber with just 30 seconds left. However, the bunker ruled no try, with French’s foot deemed to have touched the sideline. The Knights sit in 11th place on the NRL ladder ahead of their home clash with the Titans this Saturday 21 July at 3pm.

The Newcastle Northstars went down 3-1 to Canberra Brave on Saturday in an intense top-of-the-table clash in the nation’s capital. Prior to the weekend, Brave sat in first place on the AIHL leaderboard with 39 points, while the Northstars were second on 30 points. Canberra took a 2-0 lead through goals from Joey Hughes and Jordie Gavin, but Newcastle captain Bert Malloy answered back just 50 seconds later. Both sides played end-to-end hockey in the second period, however, they failed to find another breakthrough until Hughes popped up again halfway through the third period to seal the match for Canberra. Newcastle takes on the Sydney Bears at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium this Sunday 22 July from 4pm.
Victoria’s inspiring efforts A 10-year-old Valentine resident has been chosen as the NSW winner of Woolworths’ Aspiring Athletes competition. When she was just three years old, Victoria Robinson had surgery to reduce the size of a brain tumour. During the surgery, she suffered a small stroke, which resulted in left hemiplegia – otherwise known as left side weakness. To help improve movement on that side, Victoria started hydrotherapy and continued doing regular blocks for about four years. “I was inspired to start swimming as it was one of the only sports where I didn’t get injured,” she said. At the age of five, Victoria took up swimming lessons at her local swim school. Three years later, she was classified as a para-athlete and competed in the NSW PSSA swimming competition at Homebush in the 50-metre breaststroke. “I watch other para-swimmers achieve their goals and then I feel like I can achieve my goals too,” Victoria said. “I’m particularly inspired by para-athlete, Ellie Cole.”

Adamstown Rosebud claimed the TAFE NSW Women’s State Cup with a 3-0 win over Wallsend at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility on Sunday. The cup final saw two Women’s Premier League (WPL) rivals vie for their first title. It was a tight affair from the opening whistle as neither side could assert their authority, but Adamstown’s Annika D’Amico managed to slot home after the Devils failed to clear a corner. Georgia Little proved to be a handful for the Rosebud backline, forcing goalkeeper Natalie Wiseman to make a spectacular save. The resulting corner nearly saw Little score off a bicycle

kick, but she was unable to make significant contact. Rosebud then doubled its lead just after half-time as youngster Callie Thomas tapped in a deflected shot from Lauren Allen. Olivia Trinka sealed the title for Adamstown by scoring from a fantastic Allen cross. The women’s state cup first kicked off in 2017.

he general practice was closed to new patients under the previous long-time management of well-known doctor, Geoff Lambert, but reopened at the start of the year when Dr Safwat Khalid took the reins. Dr Khalid joins Dr Bianca Sheridan, Dr Stella Kingston, Dr Vicki Newing, and practice nurse Julie Hewitt as the surgery’s core medical staff. Receptionist Anna Lambert – Dr Lambert’s daughter – said, having
grown up around the much-loved practice, which was established more than 30 years ago, she knew its significance to the local community. “We’ve treated lots of families over the years,” she said. “I think it just shows that commitment to patients. “Alison, our practice manager, knows just about everyone who comes in here. It makes it a more personal experience.” Part of the practice’s charm is in its
character as an old converted house, which Anna said felt “less clinical” than some other doctors’ surgeries. Some of the treatments Merewether Ridge Street Surgery specialises in include all areas of general medicine, excisions, skin cancer checks, and bulk-billed immunisations for children, as well as in-house pathology services on
Thursdays and Fridays. Practice nurse Julie Hewitt offers immunisations, asthma care plans, and health checks for over-75s. New and existing patients can phone the surgery to make an appointment, or book online through the ‘book now’ button at the bottom of the website, which clearly shows all available appointments.

Sumptuous seafood soiree Port Stephens’ leading fisheries, oyster farmers and chefs are busily preparing for one of the gastronomical highlights of the year. August is prime time to sink your teeth into sumptuous seafood, with the region awash with the Love Sea Food festival from 4 to 31 August. Revellers can experience the taste of fresh seafood, straight from the source, in the company of industry insiders. The Love Sea Food Festival Weekend is the signature event, planned for Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 August at D’Albora Marina, Nelson Bay, and includes seafood tastings with local providores, masterclasses, handson experiences, markets and family activities. But before that, is the prestigious Love Sea Food Gala Dinner at Broughtons at the Bay, on Saturday 4 August. A panoramic bay vista sets the scene for an entertaining night presented by an all-star lineup of local seafood chefs, including Ben Way from Little Beach Boat House, Matt Keys and Dan James from The Little Nel, Ludovic Poyer from The Poyers, Michael Jenkins from The Anchorage, and Bannisters Port Stephens’ head chef, Mitchell Turner. Creamy Port Stephens oysters, salty-sweet Hunter River prawns, and local snapper are tipped to
feature in the feast. Much-loved celebrity chef Lyndey Milan – former food director at Australian Women’s Weekly – will host the evening. “My philosophy is simple: support Australian-made and locally-produced,” Milan said. “It’s great to see renewed interest in the provenance and sustainability of food worldwide, and that’s what’s wonderful about the Love Sea Food festival, is that it offers so many fun possibilities for reconnecting with local food source and farmers of the sea. “When you start with an exceptional piece of fresh seafood, you don’t need fancy techniques or ingredients to trick it up, and Port Stephens seafood is up there with the world’s best. “The Love Sea Food Gala Dinner and all of the festival activities that follow are a celebration of that.” If casual dining is more your thing, local eateries will be offering seafood specials throughout August. To wrap up the festival, the Seafood & Semillon Dinner will offer guests an incredible, sevencourse seafood degustation, matched with Hunter Valley Semillon, at The Anchorage on Friday 31 August. Go to portstephens.org.au/ loveseafood for more information, or to book ticketed events.

Sarah Gaul at The Royal Exchange theatre on Bolton Street in Newcastle. Photo: Peter Stoop
Comedienne’s homecoming Newcastle comedienne Sarah Gaul will use her homecoming, later this month, to draw attention to violence against women. The talented artist has just returned from a year-long stint in the performing arts mecca itself – New York City – armed with new material and insights into the world of musical comedy. She will perform two shows at The Royal Exchange theatre on Bolton Street, Newcastle, on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 July, to raise money for local refuge Jenny’s Place. To help women and children impacted by domestic and family violence, Gaul will donate 30% of the proceeds from ticket sales. “I’m really passionate, like most people, about women’s rights,” Gaul told Newcastle Weekly. “Jenny’s Place does incredible work because they’re on the front line, so raising money for them is a really practical way to help.”
This is the second consecutive year Gaul has chosen to raise money for the refuge, having collected $400 last year. She hopes to smash that target this year by raising up to $600. Gaul’s new show – her first headlining act since she returned home last month – runs for about an hour and a half with an intermission. “My shows are inherently feminist in tone because they draw on my experiences as a woman and a female comedian, which can be pretty challenging at times,” she said. Gaul has a wealth of experience, having toured her one-woman show to festivals around the country, including the Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide fringe festivals and Perth’s Fringe World Festival. Go to eventbrite.com.au/e/sarah-gaulhomecoming-tickets-47155535476 to buy tickets. Donations will also be accepted at point of sale and on the night. - Georgia Osland

I got it from my mumma
From the creator of The Baby Diaries mobile app, comes The Pet Diaries: an app to help you keep track of your pet’s life. Newcastle’s Tara O’Connell has adapted The Baby Diaries to record and graph your pet’s vaccinations, medications, allergies, accidents, appointments, nutrition, growth and events. It features a built-in alert function linked to the user’s smartphone calendar – essentially doing away with the pen, paper and kitchen calendars traditionally used by pet parents. An exclusive partnership with FitBark – the FitBit for pets – also allows users to track their pet’s exercise and identify how much activity and sleep they require for their age and breed.
NHM Newcastle Hunter Mummas and NEWFM have joined forces to launch the I Got It From My Mumma podcast and lifestyle website for local mums. Radio veteran Mel Sargeant said, as a mum, she felt that not enough people were talking openly and honestly about mum life and the struggles that sometimes went with it. So, she and NHM’s founder Bec Tansey created a radio show to help answer those questions, and discuss everything from the most interesting thing your child has done with the contents of their nappy, to the best parks in Newcastle nearest the best coffee spots. The podcast delivers a weekly dose of me-too moments, mum hacks, healthy child and mum information, taboo topics and pop culture. Listen through the newfm.com.au website (click on the ‘Podcasts’ tab), or stream via your Podcast app. Stay on track with The Pet Diaries app.
“With pet obesity and weightrelated health issues such as arthritis and diabetes at epidemic levels, this feature alone is invaluable,” Tara says. The Pet Diaries is available to download from the iTunes App Store and Google Play.

The gallery now also offers Art Money, an interest-free repayment system, similar to Afterpay, where customers can take home an artwork on the day with a 10% downpayment, and pay off the balance over nine months. Gallery 139 is located at 139A Beaumont Street, Hamilton. Visit the website, gallery139.com.au, or phone 0434 886 450. - Georgia Osland

Artists build their profiles years, Wells believes the experience is invaluable for everyone involved. “When I started the gallery, I always wanted to take Newcastle artists outside of Newcastle,” she said. “You can still live and work here in Newcastle, but if you want to make it work in the long term, you have to build your profile outside of Newcastle. The sweet and sour of citrus fruit There are times when I am asked various questions about citrus fruits: one being why a lemonade tree produces sour fruit; the other, why aren’t oranges sweet. Firstly, I’ll address the lack of sweetness in both varieties. Colder climates generally produce sweeter citrus fruits. This year I doubt this will be a problem, as even I have had frost several times during the past week, which is unusual for living on the coast. I have, on a few occasions, had gardeners tell me they actually throw ice cubes under the trunk a couple of times a week. Flavour can be improved by
regular applications of Sulphate of Potash, and citrus must be grown in full sun. Growing citrus has become popular since the introduction of dwarf varieties, which are ideal for pots and smaller gardens. Remember, when fertilising potgrown citrus, never to use citrus food as burning and leaf drop can be quite dramatic. For some reason, unknown to me, the warning that was once quite prominently displayed on citrus fertiliser products rarely happens now, but trust me, if you use such a product on containergrown plants, they will drop leaves. They won’t die, but will be most unhappy. A slow-release fertiliser, such as Bounceback or Rapid Raiser, is ideal for citrus growing in pots. It is a little early to begin feeding citrus, which should be done in March and again during August/ September. This is when ground-
grown trees are fed with poultry manure, carefully applied out under the drip line on well-watered soil. This process is followed several weeks later when citrus food is applied. Both should be wellwatered after application. Lack of juice can be a problem – one, being lack of water, and the other, leaving fruit on the tree until it becomes over-mature, causing the flesh to soften.
THIS WEEK • Start spraying lawns for bindiis and weeds. Do so on a sunny day with no rain for at least six hours. • You could now apply a small amount of Sudden Impact to new roses planted at the beginning of June. • Prepare garden beds for planting tomatoes – it’s still too cold to do so, but dig in cow manure, ready for the warmer weather. • When roses are pruned (I did mine today), they should be sprayed with Lime Sulphur, not only to seal the cuts, but also to prevent fungal disease and insect attack.

PICK OF THE WEEK Howl’s Moving Castle Friday, SBS VLND, 12pm, PG (2004) This release from the godfather of Japanese animation, Hayao Miyazaki, was greeted with pure joy by his fans. With Miyazaki’s trademark humour, action and surrealism, this is a blockbuster. It is basically a fairytale: when a teenage girl, Sophie, is cursed by a witch, she is transformed into a 90-year-old woman. Ashamed of her appearance, she flees civilisation to the magical moving castle belonging to Howl, a mysterious magician.

I Am Legend
Hulk Saturday, 9GO!, 7pm, PG (2003) A not-so-jolly green giant cuts a menacing yet strangely endearing figure in Ang Lee’s treatment of the time-honoured Marvel superhero. Star Eric Bana (pictured) has a firm grip on Bruce Banner, the afflicted scientist whose overdose on gamma radiation causes him to turn into a brutish giant when angered. Serviced by ILM’s dazzling effects and a clever script rooted in psychological drama, Brokeback Mountain director Lee preserves the brains and brawn of the comic book, but jettisons the camp.
Thursday, 9GO!, 8.30pm, M (2007) Based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 vampire novel, this film sees Will Smith (pictured) deliver a moving performance as the last man on Earth after a virus has transformed the population into bloodthirsty creatures. In a devastated, deserted Manhattan, military scientist Robert Neville (Smith) wanders the streets from dawn to dusk, struggling against loneliness, boredom and the fading hope of finding a cure or other survivors. But at night he has a different ordeal, as the darkness belongs to the once-human “infecteds”.

INTRODUCING MILEY
Our gorgeous Miley has been waiting for so long to find her perfect forever home. Could Miley be the girl of your dreams you’ve been waiting for? Miley has come along in leaps and bounds since she first came into foster care. She is now one of our star greyounds who loves attending the Friends of the Hound promotional days. She has met all dogs great and small and of course loves the attention, pats and cuddles she recieves from her admirers on the day. At home Miley has a funny quirky nature, loves a game with the other greys and gets so excited when her foster mum arrives home from work.
NW0276-V18
She would love a home with another canine friend but does get a little too excited about kitties, so best a home with no cats. Miley is currently in foster care with other greyhounds, and an elderly kelpie.
URGENT
To find out more about this cheeky girl please contact Janette at Friends of the Hound 0438551576 Foster carers urgently needed. You get support and you don’t pay vet or food bills. Contact Janette on 0438 551 576

ARIES: 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER: 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA: 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN: 22 DEC – 20 JAN
Although your mood is carefree, the same can’t be said for your family in general. You might need to allow certain people to resume an even keel on their own. At work, this is an excellent time to acquire some equipment that improves your efficiency.
With Jupiter in Scorpio, your financial affairs take an upturn, which should see your economic security improve. It may be that you need to lay plans to ensure maximum profit, but don’t expect swift returns from investments; it’s important to keep the long-term picture in mind.
This is a time of hard work but also of ultimate achievement. You’ll receive a great deal of useful help from others at work, some of whom may be in positions of seniority or they may be equipped with specialised knowledge they’re willing to share with you.
Should you think big or conservatively with a long-term financial or personal direction? Gather information, clarify your priorities, define your goals and you’ll find the best way forward. Domestic undertakings will have uncertain boundaries; get ready for them to expand as you go.
TAURUS: 21 APR – 21 MAY
LEO: 23 JULY – 23 AUG
SCORPIO: 24 OCT – 22 NOV
AQUARIUS: 21 JAN – 19 FEB
The next few weeks should be a fun time with the family, however, Saturn is retrograde so expect the unexpected on the domestic front. If you have to deal with awkward, demanding children or puerile adults, you’ll be able to defuse the most troubling of situations with tact.
The year ahead sees success on many different fronts and with the Sun in your own sign from 23 July, you will make excellent progress. It is a good time for starting new projects; if you’re looking for a new home then the right place will suddenly appear.
Fun outings will offer exciting possibilities and call for practical decisions. A friendship that’s been slow to blossom will grow to the next stage and a wish could manifest. A reunion will touch emotional chords; there’ll be issues from the past to reconnect with and let go.
GEMINI: 22 MAY – 21 JUNE
VIRGO: 24 AUG – 23 SEPT
Expansion of your personal horizons is ahead; you might travel overseas or take the time to really investigate a particular part of the world which you have always fancied knowing better. Your work may require you to interact with foreigners, thereby learning about them and their way of life.
The Sun in Leo indicates you’ll be surrounded by friendly chatty people. Life will be quite entertaining with plenty to look forward to. You might be surprised by the antics of your family and it is your mother, grandmother or aunt who will be the source of all the fun.
Friends will be extremely important to you at this time; you will have to rely on them for help and, in turn, you’ll be a good friend to others. There will be an involvement with clubs or organisations and you’ll feel drawn to become a part of a group.
SAGITTARIUS: 23 NOV – 21 DEC
With the Sun in your work zone, an opportunity might increase your workload but will feature your talents in a dynamic light. A health pursuit will require a concerted effort. Labours of love for family and friends might prove demanding, but will help to nurture or rebuild important relationships.

The emphasis is on the home and family for Rose; her responsibilities will increase, there may be changes in the home, new people entering the family and others leaving. There may also be a divorce amongst her closest friends and family. Having a settled home life and established relationships will be of paramount importance to her. Rose will be seeking a balance at the very core of her being. Harmony will be increasingly important to her.
Connections with those far away or interstate are going to be important. You may also be making travel plans for later in the year. However, it’s important that you take time to rest. Try not to wear yourself out by socialising or working too hard.

My favourite things COLLEGE I’ve spent the past five years of my life at Brock University in Ontario, Canada, playing hockey and studying. I have so many cherished memories from studying, hanging out with friends, teammates and professors. It’s something that will stay with me.
HIKING Some hikes are tough, but once you’re finished it’s so worth it! You get to the top and it’s just so relaxing, it lets you think and meditate.
SPORTS
Photo: Wulos
I like watching and playing all different sports. I really like watching the greatest athletes in their field and I have a keen interest in all sports.
Sammy Banga
NEWCASTLE NORTHSTARS FORWARD
Canadian-born Sammy Banga joined the Newcastle Northstars halfway through the 2018 Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) season to help boost the team in the run to the finals. Coming from Brock University in Ontario, Canada, after graduating from criminology, Banga made a massive impact on the league in his first weekend, scoring two goals and bagging four assists. Banga has continued with his hard and fast style of play, averaging 2.3 points per game and quickly becoming a crowd favourite. You can catch him in action at the Northstars’ next home game against the Sydney Bears on Sunday 22 July. 58

TEAMMATES Sometimes you might have a rough day, but as soon as you come to the rink and into the locker room, it makes the day easier. Especially with all the guys joking around; hanging out with your friends is always a blast.
TRAVELLING I love travelling and it was part of the reason I jumped at the opportunity to join the Newcastle Northstars. Not many people get the opportunity to do what I’m doing and being able to play hockey and travel the world is something I really appreciate.
