This week... From the editor I did my weekly grocery shop with reusable bags for the first time last weekend, and, guess what – I survived! The only noticeable difference was the checkout line moved a little slower. But, hey, it’s a small price to pay for helping the environment. I felt somewhat embarrassed that my reusable bags bore the logo of this supermarket’s competitor, but I soon realised that many others had done the same, and that it didn’t matter what size, shape, colour or pattern the bags were, as long as they weren’t made of nasty, single-use plastic. It made me wonder why I hadn’t switched sooner. Convenience, I suppose. But there are simple, measurable steps we can all take to reduce our environmental footprint. Sure, it’s easy to think, ’What difference can I make?’, but, collectively, we can turn the tide against plastic pollution. One woman doing her best to make a dent is mother-of-two Mia McManus, who stars on this week’s cover alongside her children, Audrey and Austin. As a family, they’ve made a concerted effort to reduce plastic waste, and are lobbying Newcastle council to do the same. I know what you’re thinking: with kids? Is she mad? But Mia says children are very adaptable. It all starts with a conversation. That story on page 12. - Georgia Osland

news Residents back toxic fight Lindsay Clout is used to the fight. Since the discovery of toxic firefighting foam at the Williamtown RAAF Base in 2015, the surrounding community has fought for support from the Department of Defence and the federal government; for blood samples; and for soil testing. “People are questioning why Newcastle people fight so hard,” Mr Clout says. “They don’t find the same community strength elsewhere.” Now, the Fullerton Cove resident is the head of a nationwide coalition that will link residents in at least 90 contaminated sites across Australia. The Coalition Against PFAS’s foundation members are involved in class action lawsuits due to the presence of per-and-poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in their towns’

land and drinking water. Apart from Williamtown, other communities affected by toxic contamination include Katherine, in the Northern Territory, and Oakey, in Queensland. “This group will offer a platform in plain English for people to be able to understand and comprehend the complexities of the issue,” Mr Clout says. “The [situation] in Williamtown started three years ago and, with the recent Rutherford PFAS, I was hearing all of the same kind of questions being asked.” Mr Clout says the coalition adds “strength in numbers” in the push for a solution. “We’ve banded together to create a bigger group and keep fighting this – we’re not going away,” he says. “People can’t stick their heads

in the sand much longer; all we want is a precautionary response, which is to move people away from the contamination areas.” Paterson MP Meryl Swanson welcomed the coalition’s formation. She says it’s another way to put pressure on the federal government to “take the matter seriously”. “My constituents in Williamtown, Fullerton Cove and Salt Ash have

news Timetable changes to Newcastle’s transport network Newcastle Transport’s private operator has made “refinements” to the city’s network in a bid to improve connectivity and address community concerns. Keolis Downer, which received criticism from commuters and local politicians after launching a major redesign of the network earlier this year, announced changes to bus, ferry and school timetables would come into effect on Sunday 29 July. The company’s director of corporate affairs, Andrew Fletcher, said it aimed to make the network more efficient. “The refinements are based on community feedback and network performance, and focused on extending certain bus routes to provide better connections across the metropolitan area,” he said. Keolis Downer stated key improvements included: the extension of route 14 to connect Swansea Heads to Belmont, Charlestown, Kotara and the CBD; route 41 to connect Valentine and Eleebana to Charlestown; route 43 to connect Floraville and Windale to Charlestown; route 44

to travel from Warners Bay to Glendale, Cardiff, Macquarie Hills and Kotara; and better service to Marketown via routes 23, 26 and 28. Newcastle state MP Tim Crakanthorp was not impressed with the changes. He said Keolis Downer had not fixed any of the Newcastle bus routes. “The private operator has made changes to the network that not only leave Newcastle bus commuters in the same position, but ferry commuters worse off,” he said. “When they started their services in January, they promised a service every 15 minutes, however, within six months they are now clearly walking away from this.” Mr Crakanthorp claimed the Newcastle Ferry would lose 92 services overall, with 10 services cut on weekdays and 21 on the weekend. “When ferry patronage is the only form of transport increasing, why would you cut services?” he asked. Keolis Downer, in response, said the ferry would continue to operate every 15 minutes during peak periods and 20 minutes outside of

peak and on weekends. “From 29 July, the ferry will continue to see an increase of services, with an additional 79 trips per week when compared to the old network,” Mr Fletcher told Newcastle Weekly. “We have worked with our staff to ensure we continue to deliver reliability and a high level of service to our customers.” Visit newcastletransport.info to view the new timetables. news Affordable housing for Wickham An affordable housing development in Wickham has been welcomed amid a chronic shortage in Newcastle and the Hunter. Non-profit organisation Compass Housing and Newcastle council will each contribute $3 million towards the development of 17 one and twobedroom units on Station Street. Eight of the units will be reserved for key workers, such as teachers and emergency services personnel, while the remaining nine are for social housing tenants. The project is set to typically cap rent at 30% of household income. Compass’ group managing director, Greg Budworth, said the organisation would support the project through existing housing assets, as well as other state and federal government housing initiatives like the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan. “Thousands of local people are under housing stress, including working people struggling to put a roof over their heads,” he said. “Having appropriate and affordable housing is fundamental to success in every part of life, so we’re

proud to be a part of this project.” Over the past decade, Compass has provided more than 400 new social and affordable housing dwellings. This is the latest affordable housing project to be delivered using the $12.5 million Newcastle council secured via a Building Better Cities program. The council previously funded a development in Mayfield, affordable housing in Newcastle, and a retirement village in Hamilton. Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the joint venture would provide homes close to transport and jobs to ensure a healthy diversity of inner-city residents. “Without affordable housing in growth corridors, many people will struggle to find suitable accommodation and be forced out of these areas,” she said. “I call on the housing development sector, relevant government agencies, non-government organisations (NGOs) and the community to follow council’s lead and help create a community that looks out for each other.” Compass was selected to build and manage the units through a tender process last year.

Centre set for business review The Hunter Wetlands Centre will receive $25,000 from the state government for a strategic business review. The funds will allow the centre to undertake a thorough review of its operations. “It is essential for the iconic wetlands centre to be more financially sustainable in the future, and the business review is a critical part of this renewal process,” chair of the Hunter Wetlands Centre, David Crofts, said. “We will use these funds to engage an external expert to help us ensure our operations are as efficient as possible and well-targeted to our needs.” The centre also received a $4,750 grant for its freckled duck program. It has been keeping the ducks in captivity since 1993, successfully breeding more than 150 ducks from an original crop of 17.

guided by the community. Another of its core values is empowerment – making the best and most efficient use of resources and experience to meet resident and community expectations. Sanctuary Place receives referrals from external community services, and, similarly, can link tenants with outside services they may benefit from. Sanctuary Place also has case workers available. On occasion, opportunities like handiwork jobs may arise, which Ms Belenus says will help tenants feel like they are actively participating in the community. “We want them to feel like they’re at home and they’re being productive,” she says. Waste warriors turn the tide Mia McManus is only one person, yet she believes her efforts to reduce plastic pollution are more than just a drop in the ocean. “I think a lot of people don’t know how [to reduce their waste], so they don’t try,” Mrs McManus tells Newcastle Weekly. “Or, they might think, ‘What difference can I make?’ “But if we all changed our attitudes, the truth is, it would make a huge difference.” The mum-of-two from The Hill has taken this passion and optimism and penned a petition, lobbying Newcastle council to ban single-use plastics – including bags, straws, balloons and bottles – from their events and operations. It comes as Coles and Woolworths ban singleuse plastic bags from their checkouts, and as the world partakes in Plastic Free July. At the time of printing, the petition had drawn 954 signatures. In an email response to Mrs McManus, the council listed some of the projects it had undertaken to raise plastic pollution awareness. “I understand that these actions don’t address

your request,” a council spokesperson replied. “However, I thought it might interest you to know that Newcastle council is in the early stages of developing a Waste Strategy for all of Newcastle. “This will involve extensive community consultation to identify key issues and areas of concern for our community and to develop a vision and action plan for the future.” Somewhat uninspired by this, Mrs McManus presses on in her mission to better the environment, spreading the word via her Instagram account, @one.less.plastic.straw And she doesn’t walk alone. Mrs McManus actively involves her children, Austin, six, and Audrey, four. Together, they collect, on average, one to two bags of litter from local beaches, parks, and their neighbourhood every day. Tossed items range from McDonalds cups and straws to fishing line and plastic bottles. Around the home, the McManuses use eco-friendly items such as stainless steel straws, KeepCups and beeswax food wraps.

“When I decided to go plastic-free at home, it didn’t mean going around and throwing out every plastic thing we owned,” Mrs McManus says. “We’re just more conscious now of reusing things, and about what we buy in the first place. “Remember: you vote with your dollar.” - Georgia Osland

news Community takes a stand The people of the Hunter will be asked to say ‘no’ to domestic violence when Newcastle tackles the Gold Coast Titans in round 19 of the NRL competition. Got Your Back Sista has joined forces with the Knights to raise awareness of the issue during the half-time break of the clash at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday 21 July. The charity’s founding chief executive, Melissa Histon-Browning, says it’s an important movement. “Domestic violence is a serious problem that affects many, many people throughout our region,” she says. “Bringing our community campaign, Say No to Domestic Violence, to the Newcastle Knights game means that we are able to engage and spread the message to a broad and large section of our community that domestic violence is never okay and that we stand behind all people who are experiencing it. “The idea came about from discussions last year between Got Your Back Sista, the Knights, and a number of other community members

about how we could engage more people in the community to stand against domestic violence.” About 350 people are expected to wear ‘I Say No’ t-shirts and march onto the field during half-time amidst a video and new campaign theme song. The crowd will be asked to join the activity by using signs, which say ‘no’ to domestic violence and ‘yes’ to ending the silence. Last year’s event saw more than 10,000 people take part in the initiative. Got Your Back Sista, which was established as a registered charity in 2016, aims to empower women and help them rebuild their lives after fleeing domestic violence. It works alongside local refuges and services to provide essential items as part of the establishment of a safe home for themselves and their children. Items have included beds, refrigerators, household-consumable products and kitchen appliances. Got Your Back Sista also began a range of new initiatives in 2017, including self-defence classes and mentoring workshops. The charity has, to date, provided more than $100,000 to

East Maitland War Memorial will be repaired under a statewide program to revitalise local war memorials as a legacy of the Centenary of Anzac. The state government has committed $2,310, with the grant coming from the Community War Memorials Fund. Member of the Legislative Council, Taylor Martin, said he was thrilled Maitland council had been awarded the grant. “As we approach the 100th anniversary of the armistice, the Maitland community is gearing up to remember Australia’s defence personnel,” he said. “The East Maitland War Memorial has significant heritage value and meaning for the local community.” The upgrade is part of an extensive program of work happening through the Centenary of Anzac.

Newcastle Light Rail construction update The new improved Newcastle city centre continues to take shape, with July shaping up to be a big month for Newcastle Light Rail. Key milestones this month include:

news Record investment in ambulance services The state government’s record investment in paramedics will provide a boost to the Hunter Region. The 2018/19 NSW Budget produced a $1 billion commitment to ambulance services and capital works, including an extra 750 paramedics and ambulance call centre staff over the next four years. NSW Ambulance stated that, according to preliminary allocations, 19 of the first 200 paramedics in the coming year would be dispatched to the Hunter. A development application was also approved for a new $3.8 million ambulance station at Rutherford under the $122 million Rural Ambulance Infrastructure Reconfiguration (RAIR) program. A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said the purpose-built station on Aberglasslyn Road would be a major upgrade for the region. “The new building will replace the existing 45-year-old station [on Gillies Street] and will deliver enhanced facilities that better support paramedics in delivering high-quality mobile emergency care to the community,” the spokesperson said. Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison said the delivery of

a new station was well overdue. “Maitland has a rapidly expanding population in desperate need of ambulance infrastructure, equipment and services,” she said. “The government promised the Maitland electorate a new ambulance station in March 2015 – over three years ago.” Ms Aitchison renewed her call for the state government to provide urgent funds to fix traffic gridlock at the Maitland train station roundabout. She said the $51 million one-way overpass had not addressed the dangerous conditions that motorists and emergency services faced every day. In April, she claimed residents expressed concerns that emergency services, especially ambulances, were being delayed due to heavy congestion in the area. “I am deeply concerned that there will be a fatality on this stretch of road or someone will die waiting for assistance as emergency services get caught in the traffic gridlock,” she said. NSW Ambulance said the Rutherford station’s location was chosen after careful consideration. It did not directly respond to questions about

news Council to support Iconic tower set creative projects for demolition

Staff axed from the Revenue NSW office in Maitland this week have been left waiting for their payout. Labor claimed the workers were told, in writing, the payout would be processed and banked for each person as at 2 July or, at the latest, the following day. However, Revenue NSW did not fulfil that commitment and reportedly told staff the payout would instead come through in the next pay run, on 12 July. More than 50 staff are set to gain voluntary redundancies. It follows Revenue NSW’s initial decision to cut 35 positions as part of a restructure in May. Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison criticised the treatment of staff and lamented the loss of jobs. “This is an appalling treatment of people who have had their lives turned upside down,” she said. “The loss of these jobs will rip $5.4 million per year out of the Maitland and Hunter economy. “That will hurt every business, including cafés, car yards, hairdressers, and builders.”

Community groups undertaking ‘green’ projects across Lake Macquarie can apply for grants of up to $3,000. Lake Macquarie council will offer the funding through its Environmental Sustainability Grants Program for initiatives that improve the local environment or inspire environmentallysustainable behaviour. The council’s manager of planning and sustainability, Alice Howe, said the grants were open to any non-profit community organisation in Lake Macquarie. “We want to see community groups, clubs and schools located or operating within Lake Macquarie come up with innovative ways to reduce resource consumption, minimise waste and improve biodiversity and local ecosystems,” Dr Howe said. Interested groups are invited to attend a free information session from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at the council’s committee room on Wednesday 25 July. Applications close at 5pm on Monday 20 August.

Criticism of axed staff’s treatment

The iconic Queen’s Wharf Tower is set to be demolished. Newcastle council has lodged a development application that will see the 40-metre structure torn down at an estimated cost of $300,000. The council opted to part ways with the tower last November amid claims it would cost ratepayers $1.6 million over four years in maintenance. The decision sparked interest from several parties, including a group in Western Australia, while there was also a proposal to use the tower as an artificial dive reef. The structure was built in 1988 after the Queen’s visit to Newcastle for the bicentennial celebrations. A Statement of Environmental Effects, filed as part of the development application, said it had become a safety hazard and was “not an appropriate reminder of the Queen’s visit”. “It is understood that council will seek public feedback for the best use of space in due course and develop a design for public exhibition and comment,” the statement read.

1 large brown onion

600g pork shoulder

½ bunch coriander

5 garlic cloves

2 limes

1 Tbsp dried oregano

1 pinch salt

Preheat your oven to 220°C. Grab your pork shoulder and stab it a few times so that the marinade can sink in. Finely dice your garlic and rub it into the meat with the dried oregano, spice and salt. Put the meat into a bowl or container with the rest of the marinade ingredients. Allow it to sit for at least 12 hours in the fridge.

Once ready, roast in the oven for 25 minutes. Then take it out and cover with foil, adding 4 cups of cold water and cook for a further 1½ hours at 180°C. Take it out and rest for 30 minutes before shredding the meat. While your pork is in the oven, finely dice your onion and chop your coriander. Mix these together and squeeze it with one of the limes and a pinch of salt. Warm the tortillas and serve with the meat, onion and coriander salsa and a squeeze of lime on top of the taco. Hot tip: Cuts with the bone will end up with a better flavour. Keep the skin on as it will add more flavour and texture once it has all rendered down. You can also prepare this dish with pork neck or pork scotch fillet. Just respect the marinating process and the outcome will be fantastic. Half a pineapple diced up also works well instead of the orange juice.

Steel city Supporting the war on waste and a local business? Count us in! Georgia Osland reports. How many Australian businesses make their own stainless steel straws from marine-grade steel? Precisely one, and they’re based right here in Newcastle. Sprocket & Steel has been manufacturing these environmentally-friendly beauties in all shapes and sizes since 2016 – from a home garage in Wickham, no less. It gives an entirely new meaning to Newcastle’s historic reputation as steel city. The women behind the project – Karla MacLean and her mum, Margaret – make about 1,000 straws a week, to sell at local markets and to distribute to more than 50 stockists around the country – even one in the Caribbean. While most others are imported from China, Sprocket & Steel straws will not rust and are dishwasher safe. Karla starts with six-metre-long tubes of stainless steel, imported from Sweden (she had

initially tried to source it locally, but not even Australia makes 316 marine-grade steel). Then, she cuts each rod down to two metres, then to the length of each individual straw. There are three different types, varying in length and thickness: smoothie straws, regular straws, and short straws. Karla then smooths the ends in a lathe, before bending them into shape using hand tools and sanitising them. The straws are packaged in homemade, eco-friendly cardboard boxes, and they’re ready to go. Sprocket & Steel is a regular at The Olive Tree Market at Civic Park and the Hunt & Gather Markets at Foreshore Park, where you can also buy cloth bags, made by Renewy Designs, to store them in. Karla says more and more people are interested in the work they do, as awareness grows around the environmental threat of singleuse plastics. “At first, people didn’t know what they were; they thought they were tools,” she says. “Now, there’s a growing awareness. People are more open to discussions, and they’ll give us their stories about how they’re trying to make a difference.”

The bees then fan their wings, creating air, resulting in forced evaporation, which produces honey from the 80% water-laden nectar. Hence the buzzing sound heard from the hive! I discourage gardeners from spraying during the day. Wait until sunset, when the bees have retired for the day. Plants can’t survive without bees, and bees can’t live without plants.
