This week... From the editor A journalist will inevitably meet a wide cross-section of people in the community over the span of their career. Some are outspoken, others shy away from the spotlight; some have an almost-encyclopedic knowledge of everyone and everything; while others are experts on certain topics. But the one thing that stands out to me, after almost five years in the field, is that Novocastrians are very passionate about their hometown. Even former locals, like Paul Jurak, aka the Kayak Cameraman, feel forever tied to their birthplace. For Jurak, who migrated to Canberra in 1989, it’s the magnetic pull of the ocean that keeps him coming back just about every other weekend. When I interviewed Jurak for this week’s cover story, we spoke for about 40 minutes – longer than average. He recalled his move to the nation’s capital; how he “kept trying to come back”, and how the timing was never right; and his testicular cancer diagnosis in 2010. It was Jurak’s cancer journey that spurred a serendipitous encounter with a kayak. He set out with a camera in hand, and thus, Kayak Cameraman was born. Today, Jurak has made a life for his family in Canberra, but still talks about returning to Newcastle. He says Canberra cops a lot of flak, but that it, too, is full of passionate people just like us. That story on page 29.

news Concerns over child care centre A child care centre that will be built near a “blind corner” in Belmont North has drawn the ire of residents. Lake Macquarie council approved a development application in November 2017 for a two-storey building at the corner of Pacific Highway and Violet Town Road. The $2.2 million, 156-place Kinda Kapers Child Care Centre is expected to house 32 babies, 20 toddlers, 80 pre-schoolers and 24 before-andafter school care students, as well as staff, parents, carers and visitors. Neighbouring resident Kim Broadbent says the local community has voiced its concerns over the development. “It’s in an area that it shouldn’t be because of traffic flow,” she says. “It will be on a state road where there are more than 10,000 cars per day and there will be no infrastructure or

turning lane or anything.” “Part of our issue is that, when you’re coming from the south and travelling north, there is a blind corner and you’ll be turning in [to the child care centre] about 25 metres up the road.” In the council’s planning assessment, the stopping sight distance required for a 60 kilometre-per-hour speed limit was cited as 65 metres. But the assessment estimated there was only a 50-metre sight distance when turning west from the highway onto Violet Town Road. “Given the close proximity to the corner, it is likely cars will only be travelling at 50 kilometres-per-hour or less [and] a stopping distance of only 45 metres is required, hence the development complies,” it reads. Aside from traffic, Ms Broadbent says residents are also opposed

to the child care centre being built within 200 metres of a telecommunications tower, and argued it will devalue properties, isn’t in keeping with the area, and will be in an extreme bushfire zone. However, a council spokesperson says the development application involved a “rigorous assessment process, including consultation with the community and stakeholders”. “The application was publicly

notified from 28 October 2016 to 15 November 2016, in accordance with council’s Development Control Plan,” the spokesperson says. “Submissions received were considered as part of the assessment process. “The DA was supported by a traffic report, with input sought from Roads and Maritime Services and council engineers.” - Ben Murphy

news Museum rises from the ashes It’s been five months of tireless work, but Richmond Vale Railway Museum chairman Peter Meddows says volunteers “aren’t going away”. The museum, which contains precious stock from the Hunter Region’s rich industrial history, has slowly risen from the ashes after a deliberately-lit bushfire tore through the site in September 2017. The devastating blaze destroyed two kilometres of track, with more than 2,000 railway sleepers burnt out, as well as a major bridge, three passenger cars, and 50 freight wagons. Despite a damage bill in excess of $1 million, Mr Meddows is determined to maintain the museum’s renaissance. “We’re still keen, we’re still involved,” he says. “There’s too much work, too much effort and too much money; a lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into this place and you just can’t let it go.” So far, more than $300,000 has been poured into repair work – all of it donated through corporate and community support. Trains have started running along the Mulbring

Road branch again, with the entire line expected to be finished by the end of April. But Mr Meddows predicts it will be another “eight to nine months” before the museum’s main line reopens to Pelaw Main. “It’s taken five months just to get it from completely wrecked to ‘at least we can run some trains again,’” he says. “There’s still a long way to go.” He adds the museum’s dedicated volunteers are grateful to a raft of businesses and the community. “Without the support of some major companies, there’s no way we could’ve got this far,” he says. “We’ve also had fundraisers, raffles and trivia nights – they raised about $30,000, which has gone into the rail already.” Mr Meddows says the museum will still offer some activities during the 2018 Hunter Valley Steamfest. As one of the region’s major events, Steamfest provides historic steam train trips, vintage machinery displays and demonstrations, live music, interactive heritage walks and displays,

Richmond Vale Railway Museum chairman Peter Meddows.

and market stalls. “We’ll be running trains up and down here – at this stage, it’s the best we can do,” Mr Meddows says. “Our steam engine, Marjorie, will be running, and we’ll have a miniature steam engine on the miniature railway as well.” This year’s Hunter Valley Steamfest will take place on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 April. - Ben Murphy

news The James sisters have been growing their hair since birth. But tomorrow (Friday 6 April), Abbie, 5, Charlee, 8, and Bella, 11, will bravely go under the scissors to support children with cancer. During the Hair With Heart fundraiser, taking place at Maryland Public School, Abbie and Charlee will have their hair chopped into a bob, while Bella has opted for a long bob. Collectively, the sisters, whose hair currently extends past their bottoms, will donate about 1.45 metres to Variety – The Children’s Charity, to be made into wigs to help children with cancer regain their confidence. The idea came during a visit to Westmead Hospital, when Abbie, who was born with a cataract, was having a lens replaced in her eye. Abbie saw a young girl

news Dance for Parkinson’s Jessica Conneely takes great delight in the way her dance classes help people who struggle with Parkinson’s disease. “Dance is particularly beneficial for people with Parkinson’s,” she says. “Research points to cognitive, physical and social benefits – regular dance and movement sessions can improve quality of life and bring connection and joy to many.” Ms Conneely, who started Dance for Parkinson’s classes in the Hunter Region in 2017, will host a free community class this month. It aims to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease and encourage people to participate in the 60th anniversary of the NSW Seniors Festival, which will go from 4 to 15 April. Ms Conneely’s classes are modelled on the Dance for PD

program, developed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group in New York. After moving into the arts and health sectors, Ms Conneely has since received a Create NSW 2017 Innovative Dance Practice grant. It will allow her to travel to the United Kingdom in July to study best practice. “The UK and America are more progressive in this field, so I hope to bring back knowledge to pass on and train others in the field,” she says. The free community class and a morning tea will take place on World Parkinson’s Day (Wednesday 11 April) from 10am until 11.30am at Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre, Lake Street, Warners Bay. Apart from the dance class, the Newcastle Parkinson’s Support

Group has also organised an information stand at Westfield Kotara, adjacent to Woolworths supermarket, from 10am to 4pm on the same day. The group’s booth is part of a #UnitedForParkinsons global campaign, which will provide education on, and support for,

Parkinson’s during April. There are currently more than 80,000 people living with the disease in Australia, while one in five are diagnosed before the age of 50. For more on the NSW Seniors Festival, go to seniorsfestival.nsw. gov.au and search ‘events’. - Ben Murphy

Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service air crew officer, Glen Ramplin, at the Broadmeadow base. Photo: Peter Stoop

Milestone has stalwart flying high In two decades with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, air crew officer Glen Ramplin has seen it all. But no two days on the job are the same, Ramplin tells Newcastle Weekly, as he reflects on his milestone achievement. “I’ve experienced so much, flying around New South Wales and helping people at the same time,” he says. “At the end of the day, that’s why we do what we do.” Most notably, Ramplin was involved in the Pasha Bulker rescue operation of June 2007, when the bulk carrier ran aground at Nobbys Beach during a battering storm. But one of his other, equally-as-memorable moments on the clock came a month later, and involved his daughter’s birth. Ramplin was midway through the delicate delivery of a spinal injury patient to Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital, when he received a call to say his wife was about to have an emergency caesarean to deliver their daughter at John Hunter Hospital. Once the patient was safely admitted, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service crew rallied

behind Ramplin and put pedal to the metal to get him back to Newcastle in time. Eighteen minutes later, his daughter was born. “That was pretty special,” he says. Ramplin joined the service in 1997. Back then, the Broadmeadow base was manned by many members from Redhead Surf Life Saving Club. As a young boy growing up in Redhead, where there was once a landing pad, Ramplin often saw helicopters fly overhead, and became fascinated by them. He soon joined the surf life saving club, where he gained many of the prerequisite qualifications for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, such as his bronze medallion, advanced resuscitation certificate and first-aid training. He was officially signed off as an air crewman on 19 March, 1998, and hasn’t looked back since, even enjoying a three-year stint at the Tamworth base when it first opened in 2000. “I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else,” he says. “It’s such a privilege.” - Georgia Osland

sport Dragons fire in dominant win A hungry St George Illawarra outfit took home the chocolates as Newcastle suffered its second straight defeat at WIN Stadium on Easter Sunday. The unbeaten Dragons went behind early when Knights centre Tautau Moga charged over the line after just three minutes. But an awkward landing then saw Moga carried from the field with a suspected, and later confirmed, anterior cruciate ligament injury. St George Illawarra quickly gained the ascendancy and went into the half-time break with a 20-12 lead. The Dragons then bombarded Newcastle’s defensive line in the second period. Winger Nene Macdonald sealed the match in the 67th minute, diving over after a clever Ben Hunt kick. The final score was 30-12. Newcastle returns home to face Brisbane this Saturday 7 April. Kick-off is at 7.35pm.

Dario Vidosic bagged a brace and Bruno Fornaroli slotted another as a slick Melbourne City side downed Newcastle 3-0 on the weekend. Fornaroli opened the scoring in the 42nd minute before Vidosic doubled the lead shortly after half-time with a powerful header. Newcastle fought hard in front of more than 11,000 fans at McDonald Jones Stadium. However, the in-form Vidosic ended the contest in the 77th minute, firing a free-kick past Jets goalkeeper Jack Duncan. Newcastle tackles visitors Perth this Friday 6 April. Kick-off is 7.50pm.

Glassy glide to recovery

Paul Jurak on Canberra's Lake Burley Griffin. Photo: Adrian Kelson Photography

He calls himself an “accidental artist”. Paul Jurak serendipitously stumbled into a quirky combination of kayaking and photography in 2012, when he was undergoing intensive chemotherapy to treat testicular cancer. The cancer had returned after initial surgery in 2010, but Jurak was determined not to let the treatment sap his zest for life and adventure. On his way home one day, Jurak spotted a two-for-one kayak sale. He’d never kayaked before, but the former Novocastrian-turnedCanberran longed to be reunited with the water. So, he bought two. That was the beginning of Jurak’s adventures in the “Red Chilli”. “At the start, when I was

rebuilding my strength, I was just learning how to get from A to B,” he said. “It was 80% physical and 20% mental. Now, it’s 80% mental and 20% physical. It’s my meditation. When I’m on the water, I’m calm.” On his maiden voyage with his eldest son, Tully, Jurak snapped a foggy, backlit photo. He’d dabbled in black-and-white film photography in the ‘80s, but, as is often the case, work and life got in the way. A plumber by trade, Jurak continued to digitally document his adventures, and so, the Kayak Cameraman was born. Now with fans all over the world, Jurak regularly posts his photos

cover story

online and on his Instagram page. He does so cancer-free. Growing up in Maryville in the sun and surf, Jurak loves coming home to Newcastle, but has snapped picturesque photos all along the east coast. His scenery of choice in Canberra, where he has lived for almost 30 years, is the iconic Lake Burley Griffin. “Sunrises and sunsets happen every day, and they’re entirely free – don’t miss a single one,” he said. This week, Jurak, his wife Julie and their son Louis embarked on a four-month trip from Canberra to Cape York. Follow their adventures on Instagram, @kayakcameraman - Georgia Osland

April has begun with perfect weather, although more rain would stimulate autumn growth. Lawns have become a little greener, but growth before winter should be encouraged by fertilising, then watering every three days. Dig in sugar cane (a good source of nitrogen) whilst turning over garden beds. Before planting new-season annuals such as pansies and violas, dig in poultry manure a week before planting. An important April gardening job is to apply an all-purpose fertiliser around shrubs to stimulate growth before winter, particularly to those plants damaged by intense heat during summer. Camellias and azaleas, which are shallow-rooted, should be mulched with peat moss. Sasanqua camellias are beginning to bloom, while Japonica camellias are setting buds ready to flower in winter. Japonicas can be disbudded at this time to encourage flowers to open, particularly those that brown in the early-morning sun. Apply sulphate of potash to improve the size and colour of the blooms. Cyclamen is one of the most popular indoor flowering

plants, but it can be a bit fickle this early in the season while the weather is changeable. Remove any discoloured leaves, water under the crown, and give it a spell in a sheltered spot, outside at night in the cool air. Start to prepare beds for newseason roses by adding compost and a good quality garden soil. Check the soil’s pH as roses prefer a slightly alkaline soil, which can be achieved by adding lime. Never fertilise new roses – as soon as they are planted they throw tiny new feeder roots, which will burn if fertilised. Wait about three months. Divide strawberries this month, planting out new runners in beds mulched with cow manure. This is an ideal time to divide perennials, such as agapanthus, calla and clivia. These plants often require deep digging to alleviate damage to their root systems. Remember, clivia prefer shade or a little morning sun.

April 6 – 12

PICK OF THE WEEK Dave Monday, NBN, 1pm, PG (1993) Proposing that an average Joe is chosen by the White House to stand in for the president who has suffered a stroke, it’s difficult to imagine this slight premise hitting the spot. But when the Joe in question is Kevin Kline, it’s guaranteed. Hoist the sails of improbable romance and fishout-of-water antics, paint them with a palette of colourful characters – Sigourney Weaver (pictured) as the unfulfilled first lady, Frank Langella as the scheming chief of staff – and Bob’s your uncle. An unlikely winner that promises to brighten your day.

Friday

Casino Royale

Pitch Black Wednesday, GO!, 8.40pm, M (2000) Vin Diesel (pictured) flexes his muscles as a prisoner being escorted on a spaceship that crashes on a desolate planet. He must battle for survival along with some of the crew, which includes the tough-as-nails captain (Radha Mitchell) and a kooky pilgrim (Keith David). This entertaining sci-fi adopts the same ideas as Aliens, with innovative camera work, great action and impressive suspense. Partly shot in Coober Pedy, the same location as Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, director David Twohy uses imaginative photography and ingenious effects.

Sunday, NBN, 9pm, M (2006) Blond Bond Daniel Craig (pictured) quickly establishes himself here as a superb 007, globetrotting from Madagascar to the Bahamas to Montenegro, on the trail of Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), the banker for a terror network. Le Chiffre has lost money entrusted to him, and to replace it he organises a high-stakes poker game. Bond is tasked by M (Judi Dench) to enter the tournament, as he is the best poker player in the service. Holding the purse strings is Vesper Lynd (Eva Green), a government accountant with her own secrets.

FAMILY LAW PROBLEM? Want freedom from ongoing conflict? Consider Collaborative Law If your matter is suitable we can contract with you and your ‘ex’ and their solicitor not to go to Court. Instead we take a collaborative apporoach with the other side which is aimed at problem solving in a series of meetings. The meetings are aimed at achieving a negotiated outcome based on your needs. Your needs take priority.

NW0958

Both sides’ lawyers are committed to helping you to achieve an out of Court settlement without conflict, being a transition to a new phase of your life. Mel Zambelis and Christine Iwaszkiewicz

The collaborative law model offers a fixed price to resolution at a fraction of

the average cost to litigate a contentious matter. Christine says “ in my experience handling hundreds of Family Law matters, a Collaborative approach causes the least trauma for people and has achieved the most happy outcomes. But it is not a ‘one size fits all’. At CMI Law Firm we adopt the best model for your situation whether that be collaborative law, mediation, negotiation or litigation. The alternatives are discussed at your initial consultation which costs only $82.50 upon mentioning this ad”.

INTRODUCING LEO

URGENT

My name is Leo and my foster mum has said I am the best boy. I’m around 8-10 months old, so still a young lion! And they say I’m a catahoula X. I love the other dog in my foster home, hes the best and we have fun wrestling matches. So I’m definitely able to go to a home with another playful dog. But I think I could cope as an only dog as long as you kept me social with other dogs. I’m also good with kids, with two 5 year olds in my foster home. I love their cuddles and attention so definitely a home with kids could suit me well. I’m showing to be great on leash, have good basic obedience and inside manners and haven’t shown to want to escape my foster home. Leo is located in the Newcastle region and his adoption fee is $400. Foster carers urgently needed. You get support and you don’t pay vet or food bills. Contact Annette on : 0404 099 021

It will be back to the basics with an important relationship for Elle; in some ways she is coming towards the end of a long journey in deciding what really matters for her. If this stirs up a certain restlessness then so be it; there’s a strengthening of ties in compensation. Also, there will be a lot of family responsibilities to deal with and she may need to take on duties for others. On the career front, there will be a lot of demands to meet.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22

LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

Jupiter in Scorpio puts the emphasis on your relationships with other people and this is a trend that is going to continue until November. Mercury is Retrograde in your own sign until 16 April, so be very careful not to either waste your resources or lose your valuables.

Mercury is Retrograde until the 16th and you could get agitated if a flatmate or family member doesn’t seem to be as considerate at home as you would like. This may have been building up for the past few weeks, but you have been too reticent to broach the subject.

Mercury Retrograde until the 16th indicates a disruptive phase is on the way at work. This may mean you will have to go back over old ground or redo a job that you thought was sorted out ages ago. Sometimes obstacles are presented to test our staying power.

With Venus in Taurus, one or two Capricorns may be putting a casual relationship onto a more serious footing. If there are any rifts between you and a friend or sibling, take this opportunity to make a fresh start and you’ll be glad that you did.

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

Mercury Retrograde until the 16th throws your plans into disarray and you end up working way past your usual finishing time. This is one of those times when Murphy’s Law is in operation and anything that can go wrong will do so at the most inconvenient moment.

Mercury Retrograde until the 16th indicates that communicating with colleagues or clients could be a challenge, so be crystal clear in all you say. If you don’t understand something, ask the person to repeat themselves. Important documents may also get misplaced so be certain to save extra copies.

Be easy on yourself; you don’t need to store up stressful problems for the future. Mercury is Retrograde until the 16th placing the accent on relationships. Unfortunately misunderstandings are likely, however, patience will always win the day.

Mercury Retrograde until the 16th indicates that you may find it hard to reach any kind of objective; your status and standing could be undermined in some way, possibly because someone puts in a bad word about you at work. Colleagues could let you down or be uncooperative.

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23

You’ll be able to get your ideas across to others easily and they will happily take any kind of action on your behalf that you ask of them. Mercury Retrograde indicates you and your partner need to sort out some important issues on a personal or business level.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 Mercury Retrograde until the 16th indicates that you may hear some rather unwelcome gossip at work and even though it probably doesn’t affect you directly, it does seem to leave a rather nasty taste in your mouth. You’re rarely shocked at anything but you also hate injustice.

Mercury is Retrograde until the 16th and there may be issues with technology so expect your internet service to go on the blink. Whist this may be frustrating, it will be a test of patience as everything will be okay in the end.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

Barnardos Australia urgently needs shortterm foster carers for local children in need. We provide support, training and a generous tax free allowance of $1050 per fortnight. Call us today.

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20 With Venus in a favourable aspect to Neptune, your passions are rising and you will find it almost impossible to keep romance off your mind. However, this placement also suggests that you will be getting excited in other directions too, such as sport or politics.

My favourite things GARDENING I absolutely adore my garden and I enjoy every moment I get to spend out there. I like a wide range of different plants, but I have to say my favourite is the beautiful camellia.

COOKING AND ENTERTAINING I can’t say I’m the best cook in the world but that doesn’t stop me from getting my hands dirty in the kitchen. I love having family and friends over to share food with and my favourite dish is anything lamb!

EVENTS AND FESTIVALS Maitland is blessed to host a range of great festivals and events throughout the year, catering to a wide range of audiences. I love being a part of all of them but I also enjoy seeing the reactions of all the visitors. Maitland’s events are something special.

SUMMER Summer is absolutely my favourite time of the year. I love being outside enjoying the elements. I like swimming as well, and I enjoy that perfect time of the day when the sun is rising, particular when it’s over the Hunter River.

Loretta Baker MAITLAND MAYOR

Loretta grew up in the rural town of Cobar, in western NSW, but she’s had the privilege of living in almost every state in Australia. Loretta has worked in health for most of her career, and moved to the Hunter over 35 years ago. She became a Maitland councillor in 2008 and, last year, was elected as Maitland’s first female mayor. Loretta is passionate about a range of issues, including social justice, transport, health and employment, and she is very proud of her city. She is interested in heritage and, in her spare time, loves going to the movies, dining out and spending time in her garden. 58

THE ARTS I have a huge appreciation for the arts and one of the many things I love about Maitland is our fantastic regional art gallery. It has become a real jewel in our crown and I always try and make it to all the different exhibitions.
