Newcastle Weekly contents

thursday 12 october 2017

This week From the editor Last Friday I was lucky enough to spend the day working from the great outdoors – somewhere you should all know, by now, I love to be. I was generously hosted by a handful of Lake Macquarie businesses to bring you a story about exploring our own backyard. The gateway to Sydney and the Central Coast, Lake Macquarie is a popular tourist destination, but it shouldn’t be overlooked by locals. We have so much at our fingertips that, sometimes, we just aren't aware of.

Now I'll take you back a few weeks, to when I interviewed this week's cover personality, Redhead man Phil Camden. Phil's interview stayed with me for a while. Here’s a man, who has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease – a condition that slowly strips muscle tone until all function is lost – who’s as courageous and high-spirited as ever. As the 2015 recipient of Lifeline Hunter Central Coast's Brass Blokes Award, Phil’s efforts to help others who have or are yet to be diagnosed with MND have been rightfully placed in the spotlight. We catch up with Phil ahead of this year’s award ceremony on page 14. - Georgia Osland

Reptile thefts spur Blackbutt Reserve security review

B

lackbutt Reserve has moved to bolster security after the theft of 16 reptiles from its popular wildlife sanctuary. The animals, worth about $10,000 combined, were believed to

be stolen in separate raids over the October long weekend. Robbers escaped with three frilled-neck lizards, two shingleback lizards, two woma pythons, four central bearded dragons, two

spotted pythons, two olive pythons, and a central netted dragon. Blackbutt Reserve coordinator Brad West said he hoped greater security measures would deter thieves in the future. “We’re improving [security] with more bars and CCTV at different locations so that we might be able to catch them next time,” he said. Mr West also praised the community’s response to the break-ins. “When the security [upgrade] is completed in the next two to three weeks, we’ll put the feelers out there for more [reptiles],” he added. “The public has been fantastic in offering some to us, so we’ll sit down and have a think.” Despite being forced to cancel daily reptile shows during the school holidays, Mr West said the

reserve would get “back on track”. “This is just a minor hiccup,” he said. “It’s unfortunate that some people have to go to these lengths to get their hands on reptiles when they could just buy them like everyone else. “The reptile show is an event that people can come to if they want to, but Blackbutt is just a beautiful place to visit for a barbecue or to see the other animals. “People love coming here.” If you have any information on the thefts, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. news Community consortium poised to receive windfall A Newcastle consortium will receive half a million dollars within the next three years to combat Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). The federal governmentsanctioned Newcastle Local Drug Action Team (LDAT) – auspiced by Mercy Services – is part of a consortium, led by Perth’s Telethon Kids Institute, that successfully tendered to roll out the Make FASD History program. Newcastle Weekly reported in April that the LDAT had just been established and was seeking funding. The city was one of only two sites chosen by the federal health department – the other being Alice Springs – to introduce a major, community-based FASD prevention program.

8

Now, that program will come to fruition, thanks to a funding commitment from the government. FASD is the name given to the group of birth defects and disorders caused by drinking alcohol while pregnant. It’s the most common, nongenetic cause of birth defects and can cause a range of permanent physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities – and, local research shows, the Hunter community lacks awareness of the condition. The Make FASD History campaign hopes to change this, through education, local workforce development and primary health diagnosis. It is estimated around 5% of births, or roughly 25,000 people, are affected by FASD in the greater

Newcastle area. Exposing a developing baby to alcohol puts him or her at risk of a diffuse brain injury. Alcohol is the most commonlyconsumed teratogen (meaning it damages genes), a grade-one carcinogen and a neurotoxin There is no safe limit for alcohol consumption by a pregnant woman. The good news is, FASD is primarily preventable. To that end, Newcastle Local Drug Action Team chairperson, Tony Brown, thanked the government for its support of the program. “Making FASD history requires a whole-of-government, whole-ofcommunity response,” he said. “Nothing usually ranks higher than the health and wellbeing of

our children and grandchildren. “This is a fantastic opportunity for all of Newcastle to get behind this initiative and secure the bright and productive futures of all our kids – free from FASD.” Mr Brown said now, the LDAT was seeking full, unequivocal support from key stakeholders such as Hunter New England Health, Newcastle council and the public health sector. The LDAT will host a community forum on Tuesday 5 December at Newcastle City Hall. In attendance will be a number of national FASD experts, community and agency representatives, parents and a community reference panel, who will collectively inform the Make FASD History program. - Georgia Osland

Scenic fitness trail opens up

It’s been a painfully familiar scenario for so many parents, not only in Newcastle, but around the world. You buy your child a bicycle and then, in the blink of an eye, they’ve outgrown it. Well, a Newcastle business called Drift Bikes has a unique program that offers discounts for trade-ins and upgrades. The trade-ins are donated to charity, with the latest batch of 60 bikes being presented to the Wheels for Hope project. The project helps repair bicycles to make them roadworthy, while also providing a helmet and certificate on completion of a safety course. It falls under the banner of Centre for Hope – a Windalebased organisation that assists

Fitness fanatics can now enjoy a sixstation trail along the lake’s edge at Speers Point. The exercise stations are spread across 1.5 kilometres, enabling users to create their own interval, circuitstyle work-out, complete with stairs, parallel bars, sit-up benches, leg presses, and more. “The new circuit provides the equipment required for these exercises and features a soft fall under each new piece of equipment and signage at all sites with instructions on how to use everything,” Lake Macquarie council’s acting manager community planning, Andrew Bryant, said. Anyone who tags one of the council’s social media accounts will go in the draw to win one of 20 Lake Mac fitness packs. For more information, visit lakemac.com.au

disadvantaged youth in the local community. Drift Bikes owner Robbie McNaughton says the business’ program has been extremely beneficial over the past five years. “It’s the only one of its kind in the country,” he says. “[The program] was designed to keep kids on the right-sized bike, and we’re trying to align people’s purchasing decisions with community benefit. “The charity extends further than that – the customer benefits and they’re helping to look after kids who wouldn’t have that level of bike otherwise.” If you’d like to take part in the Wheels for Hope’s bike shed project, you can join them every Wednesday afternoon from 4pm to 6pm at Lake Macquarie Fair

news Breakfast program at stake Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery has called upon the state government to fund an expansion of the School Breakfast Program. A number of programs deliver healthy breakfasts to school students across the electorate every morning. But Ms Hornery is concerned about the future of the programs, citing inadequate funding in this year’s state budget. “Teachers report hunger in the classroom is extremely noticeable, estimating that the average student loses more than two hours a day of learning time when they come to school hungry,” Ms Hornery said. “This is a no-brainer; the government needs to look at funding for this vital program.”

Grants to assist graffiti removal Lake Macquarie community groups are encouraged to apply for grants to undertake graffiti prevention activities. Lake Macquarie council has offered the grants, worth up to $750, as part of Graffiti Removal Day. “Nobody likes seeing graffiti vandalism in their community – it’s unsightly, it’s costly to remove, and it can make our residents feel unsafe,” the council’s acting manager community planning, Andrew Bryant, said. The community can play an active role in stamping out graffiti vandalism by rolling up their sleeves at a local clean-up site on Sunday 29 October. Grant application forms are available online at lakemac.com.au

Redhead’s Phil Camden takes five with Newcastle Weekly ahead of the 2017 Brass Blokes Awards. Photo: Peter Stoop

Brass bloke soldiers on in face of MND It’s difficult to imagine what it’s like to wake up and have less control of your body than you did yesterday. But, for a minute, try: put yourself in Phil Camden’s shoes. In January 2013, the then 54-yearold father-of-two from Redhead and devoted husband to childhood sweetheart Lenore was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) – a neurodegenerative condition that causes muscles to progressively weaken and waste. Slowly, sufferers lose the ability to walk, talk, breathe and swallow. There is no cure – yet. At least, that’s how Phil chooses to see it. After his diagnosis, he soldiered on with hope and purpose. “The hope is that one day, whether in my lifetime or not, there will be a cure; and there is one – we just haven’t found it yet,” Phil says. It was Phil’s courage in the face of adversity that earned him Lifeline

Hunter Central Coast’s 2015 Brass Blokes Award. For those of you who are familiar with Lifeline’s Steel Magnolia Award, in the same vain, the Brass Blokes Award recognises the steadfast spirit of blokes in the Hunter community; those who have faced challenges, yet still find the time, courage and inspiration to give back to others. Speaking to Newcastle Weekly ahead of the 2017 Brass Blokes Awards, Phil recalls how his diagnosis inspired him to help others. A pastor for many years, Phil started a blog, called Fridays with Phil, and shared it with his friends, family and disciples in an effort to spread awareness of MND. Today, it’s read by thousands of people every week. Most recently, Phil was instrumental in bringing FightMND’s Big Freeze fundraiser – which

was founded in Melbourne – to Newcastle. The inaugural gala ball in June raised more than $100,000 for vital MND research. And, Phil says he will continue to fight the good fight for as long as his body will allow; for himself, for others with MND, and for those who are yet to be diagnosed. “I have hope, love and faith to guide me,” he says. “I may have MND, but MND does not have me.” The 2017 Brass Blokes Award finalists are: Joshua Hewitt (Carrington), Colin Overden (Woodberry), David Sams (Boat Harbour), Lloyd Valentine (Adamstown Heights) and Charles Webster (Hamilton). The winner will be announced at a ceremony at Newcastle's Foghorn Brewhouse on Friday 20 October. - Georgia Osland

news Centenary of heroic cavalry charge approaches Many of us know about the horror, suffering, and tragic loss of life during the battle at Gallipoli in World War I. But, to some, a heroic mounted cavalry charge that helped change the face of the war in the Middle East might be slightly less familiar. Merewether resident Dianne Imison, who will join a horde of Novocastrians in Israel to celebrate the centenary of Beersheba Day, is quick to point out the battle’s importance. “People remember Gallipoli, and rightfully so, as it was the first time the Anzacs had fought as our own countries then,” she says. “But out of [Beersheba] came a whole lot of other countries like Jordan, Syria and Israel, who were all freed from the Ottoman Empire.

“So it was a real turning point in the world’s history.” The date was 31 October, 1917. About 800 Light Horsemen, made up of British, Australian and New Zealand troops, galloped six kilometres across the open desert in the full face of Turkish fire. The sheer speed of the Allied forces’ attack caught their enemies by surprise, with some leaping over the trenches and heading straight for the town of Beersheba, while others engaged in hand-to-hand fighting. The charge was the final phase of a wider British offensive collectively known as the third battle of Gaza. Despite losing 31 men, the Light Horsemen’s bravery led to the defeat of the Turkish army,

You can help sick kids like Cohen stay close to their family. There is no place like home, but for the 894 Northern NSW families who have stayed this year, Ronald McDonald House comes pretty close.

Every night there are 23 families who need a safe and supportive place to stay, close to their sick or injured child. By making a regular donation today you can light up the lives of children like Cohen and ease the burden on families. Because of you they will have a “home away from home” during a harrowing time. Thank you.

Cohen’s family were just one of the many families able to stay at Ronald McDonald House. His parents, Emily and Ben had somewhere they could call home for 111 days while he received life saving treatments and surgeries.

LIFELINE’S NEW MOBILE STORE We are bringing our great store items to you in our cool, fitted out van. Come and say hi at the following events.

It didn’t take long for new recruit Roy O’Donovan to make his mark. The former Central Coast striker, who joined Newcastle during the off-season, kicked off his 2017-18 A-League campaign in style, bagging a first-half hat-trick against his old club on Saturday. Newcastle went behind in the fifth minute when a dangerous corner flicked off the Mariners’ Spanish import Asdrubal and trickled over the line. But the Jets quickly hit back as a fired-up O’Donovan cut inside to win a penalty, which he duly converted, in the ninth minute. The Irishman then tucked home a second goal in the 28th minute before heading Andrew Nabbout’s pinpoint cross past the despairing clutches of Central

Coast goalkeeper Tom Glover. Not content with his work, O’Donovan then grabbed two assists in the second half. His first was a super long ball to youngster Joe Champness, who tucked away the chance, and then, in the 89th minute, O’Donovan found Dimi Petratos’ feet near the 18-yard box. Petratos did well to make some space before smashing a shot over Glover. The 5-1 victory was the Jets’ biggest-ever in the F3 Derby. The Jets face Perth Glory on Sunday 15 October at home.

Hunter Diabetes Centre advertising moment

Are you unable to take statins for your high cholesterol? If you are unable to take statin medication to lower your cholesterol, you may be able to participate in the CLEAR Outcomes study at Hunter Diabetes Centre. The CLEAR Outcomes Study will include more than 12,000 people worldwide who have, or are at high risk of, cardiovascular disease (also known as heart disease), and cannot tolerate taking cholesterol-lowering medications called statins. The main purpose of the study is to see if an investigational medication reduces the risk of major cardiovascular (heart and blood vesselrelated) events in participants with, or at high risk of, cardiovascular disease. The study will also look at how the investigational medication may affect the level of cholesterol and how safe it is.

What is a clinical research study? Clinical research studies help to determine whether potential new medications (known as “investigational medications”) are safe and how well they work. In a clinical research study, a group of people agree to take the investigational medication while being looked after by study doctors, nurses and other staff. Clinical research studies provide the best information for health-related decision-making, new medications and new treatments.

Can I take part? You may be able to take part in the CLEAR Outcomes study if you: • are over 18 years of age • have, or are at high risk of, cardiovascular disease • cannot tolerate taking statin medications (have tried two or more statin medications, but experienced side effects)

What’s involved? The CLEAR Outcomes Study will last for two to five years, with an average length of three to five years. This will begin as regular visits to Hunter Diabetes Centre, moving onto quarterly visits and phone calls. There will be a number of health checks and tests performed at study visits, and you will be closely monitored by our experienced research team.

medication and tests will be provided at no cost.

Who should I contact for more information? If you are interested in learning more about the CLEAR Outcomes study, please contact the Hunter Diabetes Centre research team on 4963 2323 (take option 1), or email kate@hunterdiabetes.com.au *Please note that, while we are a diabetes specialist centre, you do not need to have diabetes to participate in this study.

Contact details Hunter Diabetes Centre 41 Llewellyn Street, Merewether Ph: 4963 2323 (take option 1) www.hunterdiabetescentre.com.au

What else do I need to consider? Taking part in the CLEAR Outcomes study is your choice. The study team will explain the risks and benefits of taking part in the study. Study 29

Explore your own backyard

Many Novocastrians travel to the Central Coast, Sydney or even further afield to find adventure. But the resourceful ones among us know how to unearth it in our own backyard. Lake Macquarie is one of the Hunter Region’s hidden gems. The gateway to Sydney and the Central Coast, Lake Macquarie is Australia’s largest coastal saltwater lake and is twice the size of Sydney Harbour. Last week, a number of local businesses kindly hosted Newcastle Weekly to give us a taste of what Lake Macquarie had to offer. First up, we enjoyed morning tea at Little White Bull Espresso on The Esplanade, Warners Bay. The foreshore itself is quite the busy hub, and Little White Bull Espresso is the perfect spot to sit

and people-watch whilst enjoying a yummy treat. If you've overindulged and feel the need to get active, Boomerang Bikes offers affordable and user-friendly bike hire, with its automatic bike stand located adjacent to the amenities block on Warners Bay foreshore. Helmets can be collected from Subway, free of charge. The shared pathway offers panoramic views of the lake; you can cycle left toward Eleebana, or right toward Toronto – the choice is yours. While you’re in the neighbourhood, a few suburbs over, in Belmont, you can enjoy a sumptuous meal overlooking the lake at Deck 56 Restaurant on Brooks Parade. A chic café by day and a moody fine diner by night, Deck 56 is a must-do. Newcastle Weekly

highly recommends the classic fish and chips. But perhaps Lake Macquarie’s most underutilised asset is the lake itself. Watersports and water-based activities are one of the best ways to soak in Lake Macquarie. And, you don’t need to go all the way to Sydney to experience a thrilling jetboat ride, either. A 16-minute drive south of Belmont you will find JetBuzz Watersports, situated on the waterfront at Raffertys Resort, Cams Wharf. Offering high octane jetboat rides as well as kayak, paddleboat and stand-up paddleboard hire, JetBuzz has everything you need for a great day out – just hope the weather is kind to you as it wasn’t to Newcastle Weekly! PICK OF THE WEEK Holding The Man Friday, SBS, 8.40pm, (2015) Every so often a film comes along that warms your heart, then breaks it in one fell swoop. Holding the Man does this with subtle grace while also throwing in a few good belly laughs along the way. Adapted from the memoir of the same name from Timothy Conigrave, it follows two young men Tim (Ryan Corr) and John (Craig Stott, pictured with Corr) as they fall in love with each other despite their Catholic upbringing and the disapproval of their parents. Sweet, funny and moving. A must-see.

Friday

Saving Private Ryan

Sarah’s Key Monday, SBS VLND, 12pm, M (2010) Moving effortlessly between two very different times, this deeply moving film from director Gilles Paquet-Brenner charts journalist Julia Jarmond’s (Kristin Scott Thomas, pictured) research into France’s dark Holocaust history. While Julia’s digging takes place in the present, a parallel story evolves in the past. The eerily powerful Mélusine Mayance plays Sarah, a determined young girl whose family is among those rounded up and deported to the Nazi camps.

Monday, GO!, 9.10pm, MA15+ (1998) Nothing can diminish the enthralling pace and pummelling intensity of Steven Spielberg’s mature World War II epic. Tom Hanks (pictured) leads a platoon to contact and rescue a paratrooper (Matt Damon) who has been dropped behind enemy lines during the Allied invasion of Normandy. The muted tone and cinema verité style keeps things gritty (and not just the everpresent mud and rain). Among Spielberg’s many great films, Saving Private Ryan is a stand-out.

The next 12 months is a good time for spiritual advancement and development rather than social activities. It is time for Mia to look over her past, but not to brood on it. She may find herself wanting to spend a great deal of time by herself. Her personal relationships may be strained under these conditions. It is time to be patient and content with what she has. People from her past will suddenly reappear in her life.

Energetic, intellectual conditions are looking good when it comes to the realisation of your hopes and dreams. Opportunities for advancement are all around you. Project an aura of modest confidence and you’ll be able to get almost anyone to agree to almost anything.

Happy birthday, Libra! Venus is in your own sign from the 15th and you are likely to be swept off your feet by a new attraction. Someone you meet at a social setting may give you palpitations and this could be the start of a passionate whirlwind romance.

The emphasis is on your career life and worldly progress which is going to achieve absolute priority. Should you be considering a new training course, then this is the ideal time for leaping into action. You may find yourself keen to read about religious or philosophical subjects.

The Libran Sun indicates there could be some great news about your job and you could receive the recognition you’ve been working for. Don’t take things at face value; whilst the outlook may be optimistic there are hidden pitfalls so tread warily. Keep out of matters that don’t concern you.

A special project or concept will depend upon your ability to negotiate with an important man in your world. He needs to delegate or share his ideas and you must decide how much energy and commitment you can give. The planet’s favour wise handling of money, with security in mind.

An inheritance may come through or money may land in your lap unexpectedly. However, It is imperative that you don’t take anything for granted where finances are concerned. Avoid taking on projects or commitments unless you are very sure you know what you are doing.

The planets are certainly creating positive happenings in connection with legal matters or possibly money coming in from something to do with contracts or documents. You will have to find the middle ground at some point where relationships are concerned and be careful of being your own worst enemy.

GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUN 21

You and your other half will share a milestone decision this month. Children or young people will be bringing you a great deal of pleasure, either because they create some kind of achievement or simply because you enjoy doing things together.

VIRGO: AUG 24 - SEP 23

SAGITTARIUS: NOV 23 - DEC 21 The planets are focusing your energy and time on furthering your social life, you can be certain that friends and acquaintances are going to have a powerful influence on your prospects. SUNRISE My favourite way to start the day is by heading out for a run with Gracie and Millie, the Pointer sisters, before work to watch the sunrise over the Tomaree peninsula. There’s no better way to start the day.

My favourite things MANGOES The best fruit in the world and a special treat during summer.

HELPING PEOPLE, HELP ANIMALS Every day at work I see staff helping people to help animals. Seeing a family take their new adopted animal home is an absolute win for the animal and the family. It is also heart-warming to see people taking their animals home after receiving treatment in the vet clinics.

ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL

Dr Debbie Jaggers

RSPCA NSW HUNTER ANIMAL CARE SERVICES SENIOR MANAGER

Debbie grew up in northern England, studying at Kings College London, where she attained a PhD in reproductive biology. In 2003 she moved to the Hunter Region with her Australian partner, Michelle, and their son Jake. Debbie has had a variety of careers, including regulating IVF clinics in the UK, patient safety strategies and hospital clinical redesign. She currently runs veterinary clinics and shelter services for RSPCA NSW. Relaxing time for Debbie includes being a parent to three family dogs and occasional foster animals, kayaking, bird spotting, and running (of sorts). She is also a speciality cook of chocolate desserts. 66

I am obsessed with birds and nature and always have been – David Attenborough is my hero. From the dead black beetle I used to keep in a match box when I was seven, to seeing the humpback whales off the peninsula heading north and returning south with babies. The living world is fascinating.

KAYAKING I love kayaking with my partner, particularly around Port Stephens where we live. The bird and sea life is abundant and every trip we find something or somewhere amazing.
