Residents breathe sigh of relief

From the editor There’s no denying that we love a success story, here in the Hunter region – particularly when that story comes from the sporting world. Well, Gillieston Heights swimmer Maddison Elliott’s recent performance at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio certainly fits the success story bill. The 17-year-old “superfish” took home a prodigious five medals in Rio – gold in the women’s 100m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle relay and 50m freestyle and silver in the women’s 100m backstroke and 4x100m medley relay. Maddison’s Paralympic performance was made even more special after she dedicated her 100m freestyle gold to friend and fellow swimmer Jade Frith who was tragically killed after being hit by a car in Warners Bay, earlier this year. It’s so inspiring to see someone purport themselves with such grace, poise and formidable talent. Well done, Maddi. Still on the Paralympics, it was great to see Newcastle’s Kurt Fearnley take home a silver in the men’s marathon and bronze in the 5000m in his last year of Paralympic competition, Charlestown’s Erin Cleaver taking home bronze in the women’s 4x100m relay and Merewether’s Christie Dawes winning silver in the women’s 4x400m relay. Special thanks also, this week, to our cover star TINA festival director Christina Robberds who was such a good sport, last week letting us cover her in all manner of green goop for our cover. Read all about it on page 22. Have a great week. - Stephen Bisset

Stench eases off in Rutherford or years, the mysterious ‘Rutherford Stink’ plagued residents. Some likened it to burning rubber, while others described it as a chemical concoction. Invariably, it inflicted nasty headaches and nausea upon those who lived nearby. Rutherford retiree Ramona Cocco said some days the stench

was so bad, she and her husband, Salvatore, had to leave town. “It was terrible; [the odour] would be out day and night,” Ms Cocco said. “My asthma played up and sometimes I’d be sick for two or three days. And it wasn’t just me who got sick – it was my neighbours; my husband.” But after some 22 years putting

Between 2008 and 2015, the EPA received more than 700 complaints from residents in Rutherford and surrounding areas. In response to the outcry, the EPA conducted air quality sampling; carried out inspections of licensed

industries within the industrial estate; reviewed monitoring data to determine the effectiveness of pollution control equipment; and enforced additional odour controls. The report said the EPA could not attribute the decrease in odour complaints to any one action, “however, it is important to note that the Hunter Water Corporation disconnected Truegain’s trade waste sewer connection on 25 February 2016, effectively preventing the processing of oily wastewater”. On 1 April this year, the EPA suspended Truegain’s Environment Protection License, preventing the premises from receiving and processing waste oil. Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison, with whom Ms Cocco had several meetings to try and straighten out the problem, said the drop in complaints was “terrific win for the Rutherford community”. - Georgia Osland

up with the odour, it’s now a distant memory for Ramona and Salvatore, after the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) released a report that showed the number of complaints about it over the past year had plummeted. Rutherford Odour Investigation Project Update No. 3 shows the number of complaints peaked in August 2015 at more than 50, and fell to less than 10 complaints in June this year. Complaints centred on the Rutherford Industrial Estate, where a number of small to mediumscale industries - regulated by either Maitland City Council or the EPA - operate.

news Population boom projected for Hunter region A population close to one million in the Hunter: can you picture it? NSW Planning Minister Rob Stokes projects the region will be home to some 810,000 people by a 2036 – a population growth of 165,000 or 25% over the next two decades. The minister released the figures last week, which provide a snapshot of population growth across the Hunter’s 11 local government areas. Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland are expected to drive much of the population growth. Regional Development Australia (RDA) Hunter attributes much of Newcastle’s anticipated growth to the Baird government’s infrastructure investment in the area, including a light rail system. RDA Hunter chief executive officer

Todd Williams said population growth was critical for regional economic growth and sustainability, and planning was key to accommodating the projected boom. “Planning for a population of one million means that the region’s future needs are covered and that government investment in economic infrastructure and technology is targeted and futureproofed,” Mr Williams said. RDA Hunter foresaw the boom back in 2012, projecting a population of one million in its Urban Planning for the Hunter’s Future report. It used this one-million target in its submission to the federal government’s Smart Cities Plan as the basis for the Hunter’s future technology and infrastructure needs. - Georgia Osland

Hospital privatisation plan divisive A private proprietor will deliver the new, $400 million Lower Hunter Hospital at Maitland under a $1 billion privatisation by the NSW government. Under the plan, the government will call for private tenders to handle redevelopments at Maitland, Wyong, Goulburn, Shellharbour and Bowral hospitals, which will enter privatepublic partnerships. NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner said public patients would continue to be treated alongside private patients. However, Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord said there needed to be clear and unequivocal guarantees that public patients would not be treated as second-class citizens.

news An influx of confused callers has prompted RSPCA Hunter to speak out and clarify the implications of the Baird government’s greyhound racing ban. Hunter Animal Care Services manager Debbie Jaggers said the Rutherford-based shelter had fielded “a fair few” calls from members of the community who had thought that the statewide ban, effective 1 July 2017, was on greyhound ownership, not greyhound racing. Dr Jaggers attributes this to the industry’s and the media’s shorthand references to the greyhound racing ban as ‘greyhound ban’. She said some callers were confused about whether or not they could adopt a greyhound, while others were not sure if they could

keep their greyhounds they already owned as pets. “We’re definitely doing everything we can to try and eradicate that confusion,” Dr Jaggers told Newcastle Weekly. Dr Jaggers said the shelter had received more greyhounds than usual since the announcement of the ban, but she anticipates a lot more will walk through the doors when the industry progressively shuts down from July next year. In an effort to rehome greyhounds as smoothly as possible and to encourage the community to consider greyhound adoption, the shelter is offering fee-free greyhound adoption. Greyhounds undergo all the usual RSPCA procedures, including vaccinations and de-worming,

as well as health, medical and behavioural assessments. The RSPCA matches each greyhound with its prospective adoptee to ensure that they are going into a suitable environment. If, for any reason, a dog is not a suitable match (the most common reasons being allergies and not getting along with other family pets), RSPCA staff work to find another suitable adoptee.

Hunter Valley Design advertising moment

A quiet dedication to timeless style Rosalea Murphy believes it is her duty to create a relationship of trust with the customer. Photos: Jamie Wicks

At Hunter Valley Design, a showroom of timeless, designer, furniture, “Choosing what to buy is all about what speaks to your heart and that will give you pleasure forever”. This is how Rosalea Murphy, co-owner with her partner Paul, puts it. Rosalea and Paul have been selling the highest quality European and Australian furniture at 149 King Street, Newcastle since 2002. She and Paul, through years of acquired knowledge born from love of what they do and sell, have honed an expertise and carved a relationship with the some of most unique and lasting design houses across Europe which is unparalleled in this city. They only sell originaldesign furniture and with a low or zero impact on the environment, from companies with high ethical standards towards the environment and our childrens future. That is why they only sell furniture that is high quality and that will last and be loved by another generation after the original purchaser. Timeless classics rather than just fashion items. Rosalea believes it is her duty to create a relationship of trust with her customer. She asks the questions that give her a full picture of the way you live now and how you

would like to change the way you want to live. How will your new house or apartment influence that decision making? How can she help you to achieve that lovely home with the confidence that you can make the right choices yourself, with her support? She feels it is important to allow customers to define and trust their own taste, to give them confidence in themselves. You may have some furniture that you have acquired over the years that you also love. To work with the rich layers that make your home, express who you are, is very rewarding and gives a greater depth to your home. It isn’t about fashion, for Rosalea it’s about beautiful furniture that is well-designed, original, enduring and makes people happy. Hunter Valley Design not only has the most unique line of European and Australian furniture; much of the range is able to be customised to suit your individual requirements. Everything that

Rosalea and Paul do, is to bring the most wellcrafted furniture to Novacastrians. “Customers come into the showroom to buy beautiful furniture that lasts a lifetime, and that expresses who they are,” Rosalea says. This is the work Rosalea and Paul Murphy have dedicated themselves to for the last 15 years. It is a quiet dedication that also makes them happy and they hope makes their customers happy, also.

The Block’s Scott Cam unveils the Build for a Cure project.

Building hope for childhood cancer cure Newcastle’s Build for a Cure fundraising initiative is the epitome of the expression, ‘many hands make light work’. The local community banded together for the Children’s Cancer Institute project, which saw an entire house built from the ground up in Teralba in just 21 days, all in the name of fundraising for children with cancer, and, ultimately, a cure. Revealed last Sunday, the fully furnished, luxury four-bedroom home at Billy’s Lookout will be auctioned off on 23 October by celebrity auctioneer Damien Cooley, with all proceeds going towards the Children’s Cancer Institute for lifesaving cancer treatments and research. Everything from the land to the trades and materials used was donated by local businesses. Former contestants on the hit renovation TV series The Block, Maitland’s Brad and Lara Cranfield, as well as much-loved The Block host Scott Cam, lent their support on-site during the build. Newcastle Enterprise Rotary Club catered for everyone on-site, keeping the tradies well fed with sausage sizzles, steak sandwiches and slices.

Hunter athletes blitz Paralympics One family that was happy to pitch in was Brett and Melissa Carr. Brett and Melissa lost their eight-year-old daughter, Charlie, in April last year to neroblastoma. “Charlie never complained about having cancer but she wished no child ever had to go through cancer treatment like she did,” Melissa said. “I’ve promised her I’ll keep fighting to find a cure.” Melissa may just be able to see that promise through, with the funds raised through Build for a Cure allowing the Children’s Cancer Institute to research tailored treatments for high-risk child cancer patients across Australia, including those treated at John Hunter Children’s Hospital, by analysing each child’s unique cancer cells. It is hoped the auction will raise more than $650,000 towards this vital research. The land for the Build for a Cure project was donated by the McCloy Group, while McDonald Jones Homes built the home and PRD Nationwide Newcastle provided real estate services. - Georgia Osland

news Charity ride raises thousands Hunter cyclists have raised almost half a million dollars for children living with cancer and their families. Camp Quality’s 1,000 Ks 4 Kids Newcastle ride, this year dubbed Tour de Hunter, raised $429,000 for sick kids in need - $18,000 more than last year. The annual ride is the culmination of year-round training and fundraising by a dedicated group of people committed to creating a better life for kids living with cancer. This year’s epic 800-kilometre ride kicked off at Speers Point Park and ventured to rural towns such as Dungog, Gloucester, Gresford, Muswellbrook, Merriwa and Singleton before finishing up at Warners Bay. The team of 30 cyclists and 20 support crew made several pit stops at primary schools to bring smiles to students’ faces with the Camp Quality Primary School Education Program puppet performance, and engaged in fun roadside dress-ups. One of the cyclists – Rankin Park father Scott Sam, whose daughter Hannah, now 14, was supported by Camp Quality at the age of four through her Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia diagnosis – said he was more than happy to

support such a worthy cause. “For a dad, hearing your child has cancer is the most devastating news,” he said. “It’s something that no family should have to go through without support. Camp Quality were there for us.” Tour de Hunter was organised by volunteer Michael Phillips, fondly known by those at Camp Quality as the Fairy King. - Georgia Osland

SUMMER’S COMING,

and so are the parasites! With summer just under two months away it’s time for pet owners to brace for summer’s pests, parasites and all things that bite. “Snake bites are a big concern during the warmer months,” says RSPCA Hunter Managing Veterinarian Dr Micaela Elphick. Snakes are more active during this time as they look for food and mates. “Snakes are more aggressive and have more toxic venom at the beginning of summer,” Dr Elphick warned. To help prevent snake bites, keep your animals on leads during walks — especially in bushland areas near water. At home, keep lawns and grass height low and clean up any rubbish piles where snakes might hide. If you think your pet has been bitten, keep them calm and quiet, and get to a vet immediately. Pets left untreated have a much lower chance of survival. Ticks can also pack a deadly punch. To help prevent bites, make sure flea and tick treatments are up to date. It’s also a good idea to check your animal’s coat every day for ticks. “Ticks use native animals as a host,” Dr Elphick said. “So you might have ticks about if you have possums or blue tongues or bandicoots living nearby.”

Signs of tick paralysis include weakness in the back legs, change in bark or coughing. “Tick paralysis progresses fast and animals can die within hours. It’s imperative to get your animal to the vet as quickly as possible,” Dr Elphick said.

news Wetlands accessibility boost Accessibility options at the Hunter Wetlands Centre Australia (HWCA) have been given a boost, thanks to a significant upgrade, unveiled last week. A $107,500 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation enabled the installation of a visitor’s lift, the purchase of a wheelchair accessible vehicle and the resurfacing of the disabled care park area and main path access.

“The opportunity to interact with natural habitats and native wildlife allows visitors to engage their senses, which can be particularly important for people with a disability by promoting inclusion, and improving mental health and general wellbeing,” HWCA CEO Dr Stuart Blanch said. “Thanks to the generous grant… this is just one of the benefits now available to people with a disability or limited mobility.”

Festival inspires sustainable living From furry friends to the most innovative eco inventions, the Living Smart Festival brings together the best in sustainable living. The festival is back, this Saturday 24 September, for another year at Speers Point Park. This year revellers will get a taste of everything from kitchen demonstrations to backyard inspiration to eco style workshops. The event will kick off at 8am with a free outdoor yoga session, after which merrymakers can grab fresh coffee or a yummy breakfast from one of the food stalls. Locally-grown produce from the Lake Macquarie Farmers Market will be on offer, plus live music from local performers. The day is packed with demonstrations, activities and stalls that aim to inspire people of all ages to live more sustainably. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN ART

For the 19th iteration of the popular national independent arts and culture festival, Novocastrians are being urged to get behind the festival and adopt its neon green colours for 2016. “People can get really creative – the opportunities are endless,” Christina said. “It could be as little as popping a few plants in the

window or adding some green streamers or balloons out the front or going all out with a green display window or even a special TINA menu item.” Having been a regular fixture on the Newcastle October long weekend calendar since 1988, TINA has grown to become one of Australia’s leading emerging arts festivals, incorporating the National Young Writers Festival and the Critical Animals and Crack Theatre Festivals, and Christina added that people could expect an even bigger calendar of events this year. “It certainly is shaping up to be quite a big one, this year,” she said. “We’ve got 190 events running across 22 venues, so there’s certainly no shortage of great things to experience.” While Christina said it was a badge of pride that, this year, artists from all states were

contributing to TINA 2016, it was a festival that, at its heart, celebrated Newcastle and the depth of creativity we have here in our region. “While it is essentially a national festival, it is also one which really celebrates Newcastle and how creative Novocastrians are,” Christina said. While it is expected that more than 3,000 people will visit the city during the festival’s duration, Christina added that, this year, organisers will be undertaking on-ground research to help understand the true value of TINA to the region. This Is Not Art will run, at various venues, from Thursday 29 September to Sunday 2 October. Subscribe at thisisnotart.org for program updates. All TINA events are free. -Stephen Bisset

ROCKIN’ ROD RETURNS

Not-for-profit youth charity Centre For Hope will be hosting its annual fundraiser - Keynotes for Hope – at Lizotte’s next week and fans of the popular ABC music quiz show Spicks and Specks will be more than happy. Like the Adam Hills-helmed TV show, Keynotes for Hope, will be hosted by Garth Russell or maybe his comedic twin Todd, who will pose questions to two teams – Spicks for Hope and Specks for Hope. Centre for Hope board members will captain each team and the two guest panellists will be a local muso and an audience member. On the musical side of things, the sartorially cool tinkler of the Hammond organ, Barry Morgan (pictured) will enthrall punters with his World Of Organs show. Barry is sure to woo you with the golden syrup sounds of his vintage 1980s Hammond Aurora

Classic. The Ukastle Ukestra will also be there, ripping through a set of ukulele classics and there will also be performances from The Odd One Out and Jeraki. It is hoped that the night will raise $10,000 to help cover its expanding programs for youth at risk. “By supporting Keynotes for Hope you are helping to empower disadvantaged youth to respect themselves, connect to the community and create an inspired life,” Centre for Hope chairperson Christina Gerakiteys said. “We also thought a night of laughs and music would attract lots of people and they could have fun while finding out more about the centre and its work.” Keynotes for Hope will be on at Lizotte’s Lambton on Monday 26 September from 7.30pm. Tickets are $30. To book, visit lizottes.com.au

When it comes to identifiable voices in the history of popular music, there are few who are as instantly recognisable as Rod Stewart. From his early career as frontman for The Faces through to his popular crooning albums of today, Stewart is also one of the world’s most bankable acts. Now, international touring artist Dave Patten will give Newcastle punters a taste of the glory of Rod Stewart when he brings a special tribute show to Belmont Bowling Club this weekend. Perhaps better known as Rod than himself, Dave has toured internationally and masters Rod’s distinctive raspy vocal style and range with amazing accuracy. Add the trademark hair style, outfits, and signature moves on stage, audiences delight in the experience of a real Rod Stewart concert. He is backed by the Fabulous British Invasion Band who will also kick off proceedings with a slew of 60s hits. So, if tracks like Maggie May, I Am Sailing, You’re In My Heart, Have I Told You Lately, I Don’t Want To Talk About It and Tonight’s The Night get you on the dancefloor, make sure you’re at Belmont Bowling Club on Sunday 25 September from 3pm to catch a “truly magnificent tribute concert experience”.

time out Fix your eyes on Amarillo If their beautifully sparse debut single All I Can See is anything to go by, then Melbourne four-piece Amarillo’s debut album Eyes Still Fixed should definitely be one to write home about. Formed in 2014, Amarillo is a vehicle for the songwriting of frontman for alt. country favourites Raised by Eagles Nick O’Mara and Jack Tonks. Having already pricked up quite a few ears with their self-titled debut EP in 2014, Amarillo have shared stages with the likes of US country bluesman Charlie Parr on his last Australian run of dates and Weddings Parties Anything frontman Mick Thomas as

well as playing shows in Barcelona and New York throughout 2015. Much of the inspiration for Eyes Still Fixed was taken from the road, with much of the material written in motel rooms across the top end of the Northern Territory. An album that is inspired equally by love, isolation, distance and family, Eyes Still Fixed offers a harmonious marriage of 80s’ English pop a’la XTC and The Smiths with healthy dose of Americana . Catch Amarillo when they play at Marmook and Poom Pooms (307 High Street, Maitland) on Friday 23 September. - Stephen Bisset

CELEBRATING A SOUL GIANT As one of the pioneers of Motown, singer-songwriter and producer Marvin Gaye helped shape the sound of soul music and his formidable output is still revered to this day.. The ‘Prince of Motown’ was one of the most consistent and enigmatic of the Motown hitmakers, with a career that exemplified the maturation of black pop and soul into a sophisticated form spanning social and sexual politics. Blessed with a mellifluous tenor and a three-octave vocal range, Gaye was among the most gifted composers and singers of his era. From the soul-soaked pop of How Sweet it Is, Heard it Through the

These new vistas allowing her to explore a new intense colour palette and capture the “remote barren” Namibia desert, while the Kimberley coast provided Coles with new patterns, shapes and colour contrast to explore. This resulted in works that highlight the intensity of the land against the evening sky. “The colours were rich, ochres vibrating against brilliant blue skies” and “the coastline afforded incredible images of reefs, rocky cliffs and headlands,” Kerrie said.

STARS ALIGN FOR NEW GALLERY IN HAMILTON

The gallery is aptly named after the brightest star in the constellation

123 GO! 24 Sept - 8 Oct

of the Southern Cross, referencing the romantic idea of wishing upon the stars when following one’s own dreams and simply to remind Aurisch to “look at the bigger picture when things become tough,” as she says. This will be her second gallery, the first was set-up in a Renew Newcastle space. She was also the president of the Student Watt Space Gallery committee and has recently been volunteering for the artist-run Back to Back Galleries. This experience has given her the confidence to go

it alone. She plans to focus on her interest in ceramics and will exhibit both local and national artists. There will also be a gallery shop, which will include local products from gift cards to jewellery to functional objects. Stay up to date with all the gallery news by following it on Instagram (acruxartgallery) and Facebook (Acrux Art Gallery) and check the website which will go live soon at acurxartgallery.com and join the opening party this Saturday. - Ahn Wells

The edible garden If you enjoy cooking, no doubt the garden will be full of herbs sadly, not mine. I love herbs, but a cook I’m not, so my needs are restricted to parsley mint, rosemary and Italian parsley. At this time of year, the most favoured herb is sweet basil - it suffers during winter and should be considered an annual and replanted each spring. It is reputed to deflect pests in the garden, but I find this an unreal expectation as, even in the nursery, it can be eaten by grubs and grasshoppers. Coriander is probably the herb that gives the most grief as it can quickly go to seed. My trick to growing coriander during the warm months is a hot-spot sheltered from afternoon sun. Chervil isn’t one of the popular herbs, but its soft, fern-like foliage has a mild aniseed flavour and is great for soups, sauces, salads, egg dishes, poultry and fish. Sage is an attractive bush with aromatic, silvery grey leaves - it is very low in sodium, so useful for low salt diets.

This week • Plant out grafted tomatoes - one is generally adequate as fruit production is high. • Give roses a handful of dolomite - it is beneficial after rain. • Time to plant out asparagus corms. • Mangoes should be sprayed to prevent bacterial black spot (anthracnose) - use Mancozeb fortnightly.

property news

expert advice

Give your home loan a health check Do you know your home loan interest rate? Are you getting a good deal or throwing away your hard earned money? The Reserve Bank kept official interest rates on hold this month, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t assess your home loan rate. With rates at record low levels it pays to shop around; there are plenty of alternatives to the big banks. You don’t have to wait until you move or buy another property to change lenders. Switching is easier than you might think. One misconception is that you have to talk to your existing lender. Your new lender should do that, and the paperwork, for you. Here are some other tips to help you compare home loan rates: 1. Use the comparison rate. The advertised rate doesn’t give you the full picture. The comparison rate takes into account fees and other charges. Beware of introductory rate home loans. The comparison rate will take into account the rate that the loan will revert to once the honeymoon period is over. 2. Get the right loan for you.

Your lender should help you work out if you need a no-frills loan or if you’d benefit from a packaged loan. 3. Think local and service. Is your new lender taking time to explain things and steering away from jargon? Do they offer benefits such as additional repayments and redraws? Do their branch locations, opening hours, mobile and internet banking suit you? You may also want to consider where your lender’s profits go – to shareholders or to customers and the community. Investing a little bit of time could save you a lot. This information is general in nature. You should consider the appropriateness of the information to your circumstances before proceeding.

PICK OF THE WEEK Grease Saturday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, PG (1978) After his success in Saturday Night Fever, John Travolta (left) the perfect choice for the role of greaser Danny Zuko for the cinematic adaptation of the hit stage musical. Danny indulges in some “summer lovin’” with Sandy (Olivia Newton-John, above), but when the two find themselves classmates after summer, the “butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth” Sandy is not cool enough for our Danny and his group of cronies. Though it’s not necessarily of the highest calibre, “Grease” is definitely the word.

Friday

Ned Kelly

Con Air

Tuesday, ONE, 8.30pm, M (2003) Rarely has the bush been filmed with such malevolence as in director Gregor Jordan’s addition to the mythology of the Kelly gang. It’s a pity his direction and serious star power competes with a pedestrian script (adapted from Robert Drewe’s novel Our Sunshine). The late Heath Ledger (right) plays the bushranger who is outcast after a policeman falsely accuses him of attempted murder. With the law on his tail, Kelly and his band still find time for romance, bank heists and a spot of political preaching.

Sunday, 7MATE, 9.30pm, M (1997) Super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s big-budget action spectacular doesn’t translate so well to the small screen. Nicolas Cage plays a former commando locked up for murder for eight years, after protecting his wife during a bar-room brawl. When he is finally approved for release from prison, the plane due to carry him to freedom is hijacked by the other convicts who promptly head for Las Vegas (where else?). Despite the talent on show, Cage and John Malkovich (above) struggle with the inept script.

Naomi is being urged to keep a high profile and to be prepared to work very hard for what she wants. She has far more energy than she knows what to do with, so she will definitely want to channel it in a constructive fashion. Self-expression is crucial in the year ahead and by listening to it, Naomi will make all the right decisions. Instinctively she knows how to put others at ease.

ARIES: MAR 21 - APR 20

CANCER: JUNE 22 - JUL 22

LIBRA: SEPT 24 - OCT 23

CAPRICORN: DEC 22 - JAN 20

Jupiter is in your 7th house, so romance is highlighted. Those in settled relationships will enjoy spending time with their partners. If you're looking for a new partner, luck is on your side. However, avoid being egotistical or too forceful as this will backfire on you.

Jupiter is in your 4th house and money matters become your main focus, your ability to generate cash will be on the rise as golden opportunities are there for the taking. However, there are also likely to be a number of expenses to deal with, so don't become too extravagant.

While the first three weeks of September have been an ideal time to withdraw from life in order to regain your balance, when the Sun moves into your sign on the 23rd it's an ideal time to have serious discussions that you have been putting off.

LEO: JUL 23 - AUG 23

September is the ideal time to make plans for the future and to focus on perfecting what is at hand. Although you may not feel like you are making a lot of progress, an opportunity to reshape and refine your current plan of action will be very welcome.

TAURUS: APR 21 - MAY 21 The past exerts a powerful influence. Things and people long forgotten will re-enter your life. A lot of energy will be invested into your domestic life; this is the ideal time to de-clutter, renovate or move. Avoid being too stubborn with family members as it will only lead to conflict.

GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUNE 21 You are particularly persuasive and can easily win friends and influence people. This is proving to be a hectic month as the phone rings off the hook and your inbox overflows. However, be careful of being a little too outspoken as it will only lead to arguments.

You're in the mood to let your hair down. Jupiter sextiles Mars this month and your dynamic personality shines through, as does your ability to assert yourself. Unfortunately you seem to want to take charge of everyone and may have a tendency to ride roughshod over their feelings.

VIRGO: AUG 24 - SEPT 23 If you feel tired, it's possible you've been taking on too much just to show how impressive you can be. You need some quiet time and an undemanding day or two, so make sure you get them. A better diet and exercise scheme would work wonders.

SCORPIO: OCT 24 - NOV 22

SAGITTARIUS: NOV 23 - DEC 21 The grounding influence of Saturn gives you the energy to make the most of your cash flow and to overcome any monetary issues. A sudden boost to your income could come through a promotion or investment opportunity. Avoid acting on impulse.

AQUARIUS: JAN 21 - FEB 19 Keep your feet on the ground at work even if you're on cloud nine at home. This is the ideal time to get fancy and hit the town. Stalled projects will lunge forward and your love life will hit the fast track. However, avoid clinging to past resentments and hurts.

PISCES: FEB 20 - MAR 20 Saturn is now moving forward and sextiles lucky Jupiter bringing in the career breaks that you have been waiting for. It is the ideal time to impress the boss and important clients, just remember to focus on one step at a time. Organisation is your key to success.
