This week From the editor Last Friday night, I was lucky enough to attend the 2016 Lifeline Steel Magnolia Award event at Newcastle City Hall and what an inspiring occasion it was. This year, 14 women were nominated for the award with judges having the unenviable task of whittling that down to a final seven. Hearing about these seven women - Jodie Bell, Mary Maughan, Diane Ball, Carolyn Bear, Carmel Kaczmar, Teigan Power and Cory Newman, I was moved by the tireless and often thankless work they do in their communities and how lucky we are to have organisations like Lifeline to recognise these remarkable women. Speaking of remarkable women, special guest speaker Jessica Rowe spoke openly, honestly and with good humour about her struggles with postnatal depression while NBN's Natasha Beyersdorf, an old uni friend of Jessica's, who MCd the event, discharged her duties with grace and aplomb. Also a massive congratulations to Jodie Bell who was named Steel Magnolia for 2016 for her tireless work in raising awareness and funds to find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease. Her work, and that of all of the nominees for this year's award truly are an inspiration to us all. Have a great week. - Stephen Bisset

news Buckle up; we’re going back to the future predicted to be worth $90 billion globally by 2030 – are already being tested in some European countries and are expected to reduce the number of accidents and lower carbon emissions. They work by using radar sensors scattered all over the vehicle to monitor its road positioning; video cameras to detect traffic lights and read road signs; and ultrasonic sensors in the wheels to detect curbs and other vehicles when parking. A central computer analyses the data from various sensors to control steering, acceleration and breaking. use cruise control, so it was really incredible,” she said. “It was easy to drive; I was surprised. And I felt really safe.” Ms Catley believes the Hunter is the perfect area in which to trial driverless cars. “Driverless cars are not made-up toys from a science fiction movie,” she said. “The technology is rapidly advancing and there is a huge opportunity for the Hunter region to capitalise on the emerging driverless car industry.” Mr Foley echoed Ms Catley’s

Greyhound racing petition gains traction

A petition to reverse the ban against greyhound racing in NSW has drawn 37,000 signatures. The petition, which originated in Maitland with the local branch of the NSW Greyhounds Breeders Owners and Trainers Association, has circulated the state over the past month and has well surpassed the 10,000-signature benchmark needed to guarantee a parliamentary debate. Member for Wallsend Sonia Hornery, who, along with other Hunter MPs, has supported 4
the association in its opposition to the ban by helping to get the word out, presented the petition to opposition leader Luke Foley at the rally in Hyde Park on Tuesday. NSW Greyhounds Breeders Owners and Trainers Association Newcastle and Hunter director, Gary Minter said Ms Hornery would deliver the petition to parliament, which resumes this week. It has not yet been determined when the matter will be addressed, but Mr Minter says it’s
sentiments. “I think the Hunter’s got all the ingredients to be the hub for the emergence of this industry in Australia,” he said. “It’s got a skilled workforce, it’s got centres of expertise in the Newcastle Institute of Energy and Research, the CSIRO, the University of Newcastle; and I’ve always said the Hunter must be always looking for the new economic opportunities to grow the smart jobs, and I can’t think of an industry that’s more suited to the future of this region.” - Georgia Osland
only a matter of time. “We’re hoping that the premier will see the error in his ways, but he’s certainly being pretty stubborn about it – he’s not backing down,” he said. The GBOTA is staunchly opposed to the Baird government’s ban, announced last month, which will see greyhound racing operations across the state effectively shut down from 1 July 2017. Premier Mike Baird moved the ban after a special commission of inquiry found evidence of systematic animal cruelty and injuries to greyhounds. The report upon which the decision was based found “up to 20% of trainers engage in live baiting and 180 greyhounds a year sustain ‘catastrophic injuries’ during races… that resulted in their immediate deaths”. But members of the GBOTA throughout the state refute the facts in the report, saying much of the evidence is unsubstantiated. The ban has generated much uproar from greyhound racers, breeders, owners and punters alike, but it remains to be seen if their efforts will be enough to prevent the industry-wide shutdown. - Georgia Osland

I
t’s an image plucked straight out of a science fiction film: people cruising around in driverless cars. But autonomous vehicles could be coming soon to a road near you in the Hunter, if NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley is able to realise his vision of the region being a pilot for the testing and development of driverless cars. Mr Foley was joined by Hunter MPs and state shadow ministers in Newcastle last week, where they led a roundtable discussion at City Hall to advance Labor’s plan to legalise the testing of driverless cars on public roads. They discussed with industry experts, academics, local businesses and community leaders the possibility of harnessing the Hunter’s expertise in clean technology industries to pioneer the driverless car revolution in NSW. Development causes traffic concerns A surge in traffic from new development in Mount Hutton has roused new concerns about an old median strip. Residents in Nursery Grove say the troubles they already had gaining access and egress to their street have been exacerbated by a higher volume of traffic on Wilsons Road. At the entrance to their street, on Wilsons Road, sits a median strip, built in 2001, that prevents right-hand turns into and out of Nursery Grove. Residents leaving the street wishing to go right towards Windale must first turn left into a turning lane that directs traffic into Lake Macquarie Fair shopping centre, and do a U-turn in the carpark before turning left back onto the main road to put them in the other direction.
Kate Phillips says most residents have come to terms with this minor inconvenience, but the sticking point for many is the fact they cannot turn right into their street when coming from Warners Bay. They must first drive about 700 metres towards Windale, turn right into the next available street – Mulga Street – do a U-turn, and wait safely for a break in traffic before turning left back onto Wilsons Road to give them safe, left-hand access to their street. “I counted about 20 cars while I was waiting there the other day,” Ms Phillips said. “With all the development, it’s just going to get busier and we’re going to have to spend even longer there. It’s just aggravating. “Not only that – [cars] fly down there, doing well over the speed limit.”
Once a sleepy suburb, Mount Hutton has been a focal point of development in recent years, with two housing developments currently being built at either end of Wilsons Road. There is also an extension of Coles’ Lake Macquarie Fair supermarket planned, adding to residents’ traffic concerns. But Lake Macquarie councillor Jason Pauling (who Ms Phillips has been liaising with) said while he sympathised with the residents, the council could not go pulling out median strips every time someone was slightly inconvenienced. “I do feel for them, but council has obviously put that infrastructure in for a reason – for greater safety and greater good,” Cr Pauling said. “Before that median strip was put in, residents were making an

illegal turn across a right-hand turn lane [into Lake Macquarie Fair] to head towards Windale. When there was less traffic, if they broke the law no one cared.” Cr Pauling said driving towards Windale and doing a U-turn might cost residents a few more minutes, but it was infinitely safer. - Georgia Osland

news Specialist disability housing a nursing home alternative Non-profit organisation the Summer Foundation, which aims to provide permanent housing solutions for people with disabilities to prevent them from ending up in nursing homes, launched its Hunter Housing Demonstration Project last week. The foundation bought 10 units peppered throughout the new, 110unit Belle Apartments complex on the highway, in which one of the units the Lewis family now lives. The apartments are specially designed to meet the needs of people with disabilities. Some of their features include adjustable kitchen benchtops, lowline bathroom sinks and sensoroperated doors. Tania said her new apartment had given her some of her independence back.

fter suffering a stroke, Tania Lewis was living in a nursing home in Cooranbong for three long, gruelling years before she was reunited with her family. “All I ever thought about was getting home,” Tania said. “I never gave up on that – that dream was all that kept me going.” Through the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Tania got the supports she needed to move into a Bonnells Bay rental property last year with her husband Leonard and daughter Faith. But it still wasn’t right. “It had narrow hallways; it wasn’t really accessible for a chair,” Tania said. Eight weeks ago, the Lewis’ prayers were answered, when they become some of the first tenants to move into specialist disability housing in Belmont.
Go for gold: students farewell Westcott Some of Scott Westcott’s youngest fans gathered last week to farewell the Adamstown athlete ahead of his Olympic debut in Rio. Students at New Lambton Public School, which Scott’s sons Noah (year 2) and Finn (kindergarten) attend, gave him a grand send-off with an assembly in the school’s hall. Scott made a speech to the students, in which he talked about persistence and courage in the face of obstacles. He told of how he never once gave up in the 16 years it took him to reach his goal of making the Australian Olympic team. Scott first attempted to qualify for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, but he narrowly missed out. He tried again in 2004 to qualify for Athens. At the time he was ranked fourth in Australia, but the Olympic committee only selected three track athletes that year. “I was tired, but I kept on going,” Scott said. “I trained every day, sometimes twice a day, for another four years.” Scott missed out, only marginally, again in 2008 for the Beijing Olympics and in 2012 for the London Olympics. “I thought, I’ve had enough, I’m going to retire,” he said.
“And then I had this idea. I thought maybe, because I kept on trying to keep fit, maybe I’ve got one more good race in me.” Last year, on his 40th birthday, Scott qualified for Rio at the 2015 Beijing Marathon, which he ran in two hours, 15 minutes and 30 seconds. “After 16 years of trying, I finally made my goal,” he told the students. New Lambton South Public School will be rooting for Scott when he competes on August 21 – the final day of the Olympics, which kick off on August 5 in Brazil. Scott joins 16 other Hunter athletes on the 418-strong Australian team. hen it comes to seemingly boundless energy, there are few who are as full of beans as Newcastle identical sixyear-old twins Alfie and Boaz Bonar. “They’re not outdoor kids – they are always out and about. If they’re not out running, they’re on their skateboards. They’ve both got huge amounts of energy,” dad Trent told Newcastle Weekly. To that end, the youngsters have been named youth ambassadors for the upcoming Cotton On Foundation event Run Newcastle. “It has come as quite a big surprise,” Trent said. “The excitement is pretty high in our house at the moment – the boys have been asking ‘is sit tomorrow’ nearly every day and we’ve been saying ‘just one more sleep.’ They just can’t wait.” The boys join fellow ambassadors Carrie Bickmore, Tegan Martin and Tim Robards for the event where 100% of registration fees go towards the refurbishment of the adolescent ward at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital. There will be a 12-kilometre fun run and a six-kilometre fun run or walk as well as a one-
kilometre race for children, aged four to 12 as well as junior and toddler runs. With both boys champing at the bit to get running, Alfie said it was the fitness aspect of running that excited him. “I like running because you can run with your parents and I like going fast,” he said. “I also like it because it’s good for your health.” For Boaz, the opportunity to do what he loves while raising much-needed funds for sick kids was an added bonus, adding that the cheers from spectators would only encourage him to do better “It feels good to help raise money for the sick kids in hospital,” Boaz said. “When people cheer me on I’ll smile, wave and run faster.” Since its first race day in 2013, Run Newcastle, an initiative of the Cotton On Foundation, has raised more than $372,000. Hunter Valley wine on national stage A Hunter Valley winery has been named winery of the year at a prestigious awards ceremony earlier this week. McWilliam’s Mount Pleasant, Hunter Valley was named as the best in the region by revered wine critic James Halliday in the 2017 Wine Companion Awards at an event that coincided with the release of his respected, 776-page annual Wine Companion. McWilliam’s Mount Pleasant chief winemaker Jim Chatto told Newcastle Weekly he was overjoyed with the award. “We’re all very excited about it
here,” he said. “We’ve known about it for some time so it’s good to actually be able to talk about it. “In essence, this award could possibly be the biggest and most significant acknowledgement the winery has ever received.” Chatto said it was the range of wines submitted for the awards that got the winery over the line. “The major factor in the award would be the breadth and depth of the wines submitted,” he said. ‘We had a great vintage here in 2014 and we’ve been adding new wines and focusing on what’s great about

The Hunter Region is well and truly on the national wine stage.
Nutrition researchers at the University of Newcastle are looking for people to participate in a study aimed at helping people improve their dietary habits. The study will evaluate a new, online assessment tool, the Australian Eating Survey, developed by Professor Clare Colins and the Nutrition and Dietetics team from the University of Newcastle. “We are interested to see whether the personalised food and nutrient intake report can help people improve eating habits. We are seeking 50 people for this trial who want to improve their food habits, are aged 18 years and over and are relatively stable weight,” Dr Megan Rollo said. WALLSEND WINTER FAIR This year’s Wallsend Winter Fair is just around the corner and it’s shaping up to be another mammoth community event. he fair, one of the largest, one-day street events in the Newcastle region will be held on Sunday 14 August from 9am to 4pm and it is anticipated that more than 30,000 people will turn out to the popular event. The Winter Fair unites the Wallsend community in supporting local businesses, community groups, charities, schools, sporting groups, local entertainers and talent schools. GREATER ASKS WHAT DOES FAIR MEAN TO KIDS Wallsend school students have been asked what the Wallsend Winter Fair means to them. The question has been posed by Greater Bank as part of its Wallsend Winter Fair School Art Competition. Greater Bank Wallsend branch manager Jodie Daly said entries have closed and the quality, this year,was very impressive with students using parades, dance exhibitions and market stalls as inspiration. Students have the chance to win some great prizes. The school with the most entries will win $500. There will also be Greater Bank youth savings accounts for the best three artworks. The Wallsend Town Business Association is also giving away 10, $20 prizes to age group finalists. Everyone who entered will receive a $5 savings account from Greater Bank and has a chance to win one of

t’s hard to believe that it has been ten years since singer Damien Leith captured the heart of the nation on Australian Idol. However, since his breakout stint, Leith has definitely eclipsed his reality TV star persona with eight studio albums, two novels and an ARIA and Helpmann awards under his belt. To celebrate the auspicious anniversary, Leith will be hitting the road, later this month, for a mammoth 35-date national tour, which will kick off in Newcastle. In a case of ‘time flies when you’re having fun’, Leith told Newcastle Weekly he couldn’t believe the milestone had rolled around already. “This has got to be the fastest ten years in the history of time,” he laughed. “It really has gone by so fast, but it’s an occasion that’s definitely worth celebrating.” Leith added that the celebratory shows would be full of favorites such as his stirring renditions of Hallelujah, Unchained Melody, Message to My Girl, and Creep, with a few rarer tunes and insightful stories from a decade on the road.

Some of the nation’s best riders will hit the Hunter next weekend.
High octane action Some of Australia’s best dirt track motorcycle riders – some from as far away as Townsville and Adelaide – will descend on Barleigh Ranch at Eagleton for the 2016 staging of the Australian Senior Dirt Track Championships. Sponsored by Chris Watson Motorcycles Yamaha and supported by the Port Stephens Council, the championship meeting will be staged on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 August. There will be nine classes of competition – six two-wheel classes, the dirt track sidecars and two classes of ATVs (quads). Dirt track racing is a great spectacle for fans who can see the entire track, and when an Australian Championship is on the line fast, exciting action is guaranteed. Given the great history of dirt track racing around the Hunter region it is surprising that this annual championship meeting has not been staged at Barleigh Ranch since 2006, and before that it was in 1984.
Hunter fans will get a long overdue look at some of the nation’s best, gathered in the one place on the same weekend as all of last year’s winners will be there to defend their titles, but none will find it easy given the quality and depth in the entry list in all classes. Luke Richards from Singleton won three classes last year, denied another by his good friend Marty McNamara from Gunnedah, while Adelaide teenager Ty Lynch will be looking to step up from his Under 19 class win. Queenslanders, sidecar duo of Adam and Graham Liebke and Briony Hendrickson in the womens class and local ATV rider Matthew Griffiths will also be defending their titles. Former world champion Troy Bayliss, veteran Hunter rider Paul Caslick and gun Brisbane youngster Jarred Brook are among other favored riders. Action on both Saturday and Sunday commences at 10am.

Get creative with limited kitchen space.
MAKE EVERY INCH COUNT When kitchen space is at a premium, storing all your crockery and gadgets can become a delicate balancing act. Get organised and utilise every inch of space with these tricky storage tips. Easy-grab storage bins. Pick up some wire baskets or plastic tubs to keep on top of cupboards. These are great for storing items you may not need often, but still need easy access to. Utilise vertical space. This applies to pretty much anywhere throughout your kitchen,
from the inside of the pantry to the outside of cupboards. Place hooks to hang utensils or a magnetic strip to keep all your knives in one place. Surprise space. Opt for a hollow island bench with shelves in it to store all those bits and bobs you’ll need on hand when chopping, mixing or rolling. Shelve it. Make up with shelves what you lack in cabinet space. It’s also a quirky way to display your crockery.
It’s countdown time to spring and, this year, it will be most welcome. IN THE GARDEN Even though we have JUDY SHARPE had the odd warm day, Mother Nature is tricking us and it is far too early to consider fertilising lawns or feeding indoor plants. If you are in a frost-free area, rose pruning should have been completed - if you haven’t yet fed your roses, try something a little different, mix two cups of blood and bone with half a cup of superphosphate, plus a spoonful of dolomite. Citrus maintenance is also important. Plants grown in containers should only be fertilised with a slow release such as Bounceback Feed ground grown citrus with poultry manure applied under the drip line, followed several weeks later by citrus food. Both applications should be watered before and after fertilising. Never feed lawns until the grass is actively growing which means being mowed. Weeds should be sprayed now before fertilising at the end of the month. Prepare gardens for spring by fertilising the entire garden with the appropriate product, whether it be cow manure or slow release pelletts. It is tomato time. Prepare beds for summer vegetables by preparing with cow manure at least one week before planting.
