news hen Windale’s Ann Walker was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2013, it didn’t come as that much of a shock, despite having no predisposition to the disease. “It was no ‘oh my god’ moment,” Mrs Walker said. “I knew it had to be something like that seeing as I had put on so much weight. “I suppose I expected it; a sedentary lifestyle will do that.” Fast forward three years, and Mrs Walker is doing her best to manage the condition. Through exercise, healthy eating and portion control, she has lost 10 kilograms and has more energy to keep up with her two grandchildren, aged three and six. “If you’re careful with what you’re doing, you can live a normal life,” she said.

Mrs Walker is one of 329 people in Windale living with diabetes, according to newly-updated statistics compiled by Diabetes Australia through the National Diabetes Services Scheme. The online interactive map shows the rate of diabetes – type 1, type 2 and gestational – by postcode, in comparison to the national average (5.1%). In Windale, 9.5% of the population (3457 people) has diabetes, which is almost twice the national average, and the highest rate of any Hunter postcode. Diabetes NSW Manager, Government and Health System Development, Roza Sage said this could be for a number of reasons. “You have to take into account the demographics of an area; Windale could have an older

population, and age is a big risk factor [of type 2 diabetes],” she said. “There’s a strong socioeconomic correlation as well.” In light of this alarming statistic, Charlestown MP Jodie Harrison hosted a diabetes forum at Windale Gateshead Bowling Club last week, at which Diabetes NSW – Hunter Region Angela Blair gave a presentation on the disease and how to manage it. Mrs Blair spoke about type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease where the pancreas does not

produce enough insulin; type 2 diabetes, caused by lifestyle factors; gestational diabetes, which affects expectant mothers during pregnancy; and pre-diabetes, marked by higher-than-normal blood glucose levels and usually a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Mrs Blair said all types of diabetes could be managed with the right combination of medication, diet and lifestyle changes, such as adding exercise into your daily routine. “These small changes add up,” she said. - Georgia Osland

news Plans for a mosque in Buchanan have been given the green light, in a decision by Cessnock City Council that stirred up mixed emotions within the community. Councillors voted 6-4 for the development application, which included plans for a public place of worship, an ablutions facility, funeral home, recreation areas and car parking at 911 Buchanan Road. Mayor Bob Pynsent said the council opened its chambers to more than 100 community members for the meeting – 28 of whom gave presentations. “Council carefully considered the public submissions and planning merit,” Cr Pynsent said. “It was a clearcut decision by the council.” Cr Pynsent said tensions were high but the meeting did not get out of hand. “The good thing was that [of the 28 people giving presentations], everyone

was given an opportunity to speak. Because it was so emotive it was essential to hear from both sides.” Spokesperson for the Newcastle Muslim Association (the development applicant) and well-known local Muslim community representative, Diana Rah told the Newcastle Weekly the association was “very pleased with the outcome”. She said the association had put in a lot of work on the development application, altering the original plans to ‘soften’ the design and move it further back from the main road to appease those against it. “We’re grateful to Cessnock City Council and all the planning staff,” she said. But some residents were less than impressed with the council’s decision. Some vented their frustrations on a Facebook page, titled ‘STOP the Buchanan Mosque - kurri kurri’, which

was established last year after initial plans for the mosque surfaced. The page, which has more than 7700 likes, has been a source of uproar and discontent. Its administrator said in a post following the decision: “we are certainly not happy with the result”. “Mosques are not welcome in Australia”, said one commenter; “I’m pleased I don’t live there anymore, this is wrong”, said another. Meanwhile, comments of elation and gratitude flowed on another Facebook page, titled ‘Support the Mosque for Buchanan’. Ms Rah added that the existing mosque in Wallsend was “stretched to the limit” and the association needed another mosque to accommodate the Hunter’s growing Muslim community. “We greatly support a united and diverse Newcastle and Hunter Valley.” - Georgia Osland

Crown land inquiry An Upper House inquiry into the management and use of Crown land is underway, with a public hearing to be held in Newcastle next month. Crown land – home to natural features such as parks, beaches, waterways and sports grounds – covers about 42% of the state. The inquiry was established to investigate the extent of Crown land and the benefits of its use; community input regarding its commercial use and disposal; measures to protect and preserve it; and the extent of Aboriginal land claims over Crown land. Buchanan mosque rouses mixed emotions

Portion sizes key to understanding consumer perception

ow portion sizes affect our perception of nutrition values is at the heart of a University of Newcastle study. Dietetics researchers at the university’s Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition want to get to the bottom of how snack lovers make decisions about which foods are better for them, based on their serving size. The study is being conducted through an online survey, which asks participants to input the nutrition value of different foods using a sliding scale. From an apple to chocolate chip cookies to natural yogurt, participants are shown two portion sizes of each food, and must weigh up which one they believe is better for them, using the information from the nutrition panels provided. Responses will be compared to those of trained dieticians to gauge how consumer perception differs from professional guidelines. It is hoped this will be used to improve

packaging information so consumers can be better informed. University of Newcastle Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition chief investigator, Dr Tamara Bucher said current food labels were confusing because they showed standardised amount such as ‘per 100 grams’ or ‘per serve’, which did not always represent the amount people actually ate. “The amount is very important, of course, especially when you’re trying to manage weight or you’re buying snacks for children,” she said. Ideally, the researchers would like to see a frontof-pack-label introduced, indicating how nutritious a particular food is, in the amount that it comes. Dr Bucher said this was the first time the university had really delved into portion sizes. “In our previous snack studies we’ve observed that people don’t really consider portion size,” Dr Bucher said. “So, with a small piece of chocolate and

physiotherapy sessions a week for 12 weeks. “There are more than 20 people out there that need this,” Mrs Leonard said. “We want to help them.” Mrs Leonard founded the AIN in 2014, a year after her mother, Damiana Martinet, passed away. Damiana suffered a stroke in 2007 and was left with minimal movement. Mrs Leonard saw first-hand how difficult the path of neuro-rehabilitation could be, and how costly private physiotherapy sessions were. “No one can afford a $150 to $200-an-hour private session with a physiotherapist,” she said. “We saw a gap between neuroscience findings being translated into accessible neuro-rehab programs and wanted to fix that.” The AIN will host a movie fundraiser day at Event Cinemas Kotara on 13 August with the aim of funding more places in the HELLEN trial. There will be a 2pm screening of Bad Moms, from which some of the proceeds will go towards the AIN. he Hunter has become home to Australia’s first hands-free exoskeleton for neurological rehabilitation. An initiative of the Australian Institute of Neuro-rehabilitation (AIN), the Hunter’s Exoskeleton for Lower Limb Exercise and Neuro-rehabilitation, or HELLEN for short, is used to help people who have suffered paralysis from strokes and other acquired brain and spinal cord injuries stand and move around. The device, funded with the help of a $99,000 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, uses hand controls, which can be operated by the participant, if they have use of their hands, or their physiotherapist. HELLEN is accessible at the University of Newcastle as part of a Hunter trial. But the AIN has a little way to go before everyone gets their hands on HELLEN, founder and chief executive officer Trish Leonard says. Twenty places in the Hunter trial have already been funded through grants and pro-bono support, but Mrs Leonard says the institute needs the community’s help to raise funds to enable more people to have access to HELLEN. Author Ed Tonks has delved deep into the history of Lake Macquarie pubs for his latest book.

Following on from the success of his book detailing the history of Newcastle pubs and pub culture, No Bar To Time, author Ed Tonks has turned his attention to watering holes in Lake Macquarie for his latest tome. Titled Smelters’ Haven to Artist’s Rest, the book looks at the histories of 44 hotels, both current and ‘lost’ in Lake Macquarie and Ed told Newcastle Weekly he was glad to see the light at the end of the tunnel with the book’s release. “I’ve probably been working on actually compiling the book for about six months but the actual research has taken years and years and years. he said. “It cuts new ground in terms of the mix of the old and the current, and it’s been a long time since there’s been a book on Lake Macquarie so it’s great to be able to put the area on the map,” he said. “The geographical spread is from Catherine Hill Bay on the eastern side then north through to Charlestown, West Wallsend, down through to Teralba, Toronto and we finish at Wangi Wangi. “This is the significance of the name – smelter’s haven refers to the Argenton Hotel and the Cockle Creek smelter nearby, and the artist’s rest is a reference to Wangi Wangi and Sir William Dobel.”

For Ed, it was the prolific history of female licensees in the area that proved one of the most interesting aspects of his research. “There are 44 hotels included in the book and no less than 18 of them were associated with female licensees in their early history,” he said. “The female licensee is a very significant and real phenomenon as far as the late nineteenth and early twentieth century is concerned. Annie Mitchell for example. In April 1921 a Mr Mitchell became licensee of the Swansea hotel. He died in 1927 and his widow, Annie Mitchell became licensee and in 1955 sold that license to a Mrs Mawson. “She then became the foundation licensee of the Orana Hotel at Blacksmiths, which I find fascinating.” From Smelter’s Haven to Artist’s Rest is out now.

A MELODIC MILESTONE Shakespeare once said “if music be the food of love, play on” and there’ll be plenty of love in our region next month when the inaugural Newcastle Music Festival gets underway. Running across six venues in the Newcastle region, the 11-day festival will see more than 200 local national and international classical performers descend on Newcastle in what promises to be a bumper program of events. “The idea arose because David [Banney, festival co-director] has organized a mini-festival with the

Christ Church Camerata - The Newcastle Strings Festival – which went over really well,” co-director Ross Fiddes said. “We were talking one day and said that we should look at hosting a festival for strings and voices, so we’d organised a weekend however people just kept contacting us and the event just kept snowballing, which is very encouraging.” Ross added that while the festival will showcase some true international and national talent, such as renowned mezzo soprano Deborah Humble and Sydney’s ARIA-nominated Acacia

Quartet, he said the festival would also shine a light on the Hunter’s musical talent including our cover star, the multi-talented Sue Carson, who will be in soprano mode, performing a program titled A Taste of Strauss accompanied by Ross on piano. “We have some truly high-class performers in the Hunter region such as the wonderful Sue who is very well known here for her work with Bob Corbett and Love That Hat as well as the likes of Opera Hunter, The Newcastle Youth Orchestra, baritone Christopher Allan, and the

Newcastle University Choir.” With all signs pointing to a successful 2016 iteration, Ross said that plans were already in the works for a 2017 festival. “We’ve got a lot of great ideas already for next year which is very exciting and encouraging to see that there is this kind of interest in classical music in our region.” The Newcastle Music Festival is on from Thursday 11 to Thursday 21 August. A decade is a long time by any stretch of the imagination, but in the fickle world of popular music, it can feel like a lifetime – a fact certainly not lost on Australian country music sensation The McClymonts. The sisterly trio featuring Brooke, Mollie and Sam, recently hit the road in celebration of their ten years in the industry and Brooke told Newcastle Weekly such a tour could not be complete without a Newcastle show. “It’s been a little while since we’ve been there so this show is well overdue,” she said. “Newcastle has always been very good to us so when we were putting the tour together, it was pretty much a no-brainer. “Ten years is really amazing and it’s awesome that we’re still doing it. For us, we’re all still having such a

great time so, why stop, right?” Since releasing their self-titled debut EP in 2006, the trio has gone on to amass an impressive nineteen charting singles, gold records and more awards and sold out tours than you can mention, making the trio with the lush harmonies one of the best-loved acts on the Australian country music circuit. Brooke added that while this tour offered time for reflection on what has been an amazing career, there were no plans to start resting on laurels. “We are all still totally in love with what we do – it’s addictive,” she said. “We are planning on a new album sometime in the near future – there’s not much to tell at this stage, other than we’d like to have something out for Tamworth.” - Stephen Bisset

CYRUS RUNS TO TOWN It’s been a bit of a whirlwind for Woolongongbased singer songwriter Cyrus over the last 12 months. Since talking out the 2015 season of the hit TV show X Factor, the burgeoning talent has also released a gold-certified debut album and follow-up single Keep Talking to rave reviews across the country. If that wasn’t enough, the affable singer will be making his inaugural Newcastle appearance at the charity running event Run Newcastle. Cyrus told Newcastle Weekly that he couldn’t wait for his first Newcastle show, not least for the fact that all of the proceeds for the event go towards the redevelopment of the Adolescent Ward at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital. “It’s going to be unreal – I can’t wait to play in Newcastle and in front of what should be quite an energetic crowd,” he said. “Also, when the organisers told me it was to raise money for such a great cause, it was pretty hard to say no.” Given that it’s been a little under a year since Cyrus’ auspicious X Factor win, he added that there

have been more than a few ‘pinch me’ moments. “It’s been an amazing ride,” he said. “I have always had a real strong passion and drive for music and now, to be given the opportunity to continue to pursue it is just phenomenal.” With his latest single Keep Talking piquing interest around the country and giving a tantalising insight into how far the singer has come since his X Factor journey, it shouldn’t be too long before we hear much more from Cyrus. “For the last four months I’ve been hiding away in the studio writing new material,” he said. “I’ve also been over in LA writing as well which is pretty exciting – I wish I could say more.” Catch Cyrus at Run Newcastle at Newcastle Foreshore on Sunday 7 August. Beating the winter pests Often, pests that plague gardeners disappear during winter, but there are bugs that persist throughout the cold weather. Scale seems to be an ever-present problem which is often indicated by the presence of sooty mould - keep an eye on gardenias, box, camellias and lilly pillies. Badly infected plants will need to be sprayed with a mixture of white oil and Malathon, whereas regular applications of pest oil will control the scale. Sooty mould will need copper oxychloride to eliminate this fungal disease. Scale on roses should have been eliminated at pruning time when sprayed with lime Sulphur, which should only be used when plants are dormant. The same white louse scale that attacks roses is also found on palms which should be sprayed by combining white oil and Malathon. Cinerarias, just beginning to bloom, have large leaves, which leaf miner loves to attack - this is

indicated by silver tracing on the leaves and should be sprayed with Insect & Mite Killer. Azaleas are prone to spider mite. The treatment again is Insect & Mite Killer. During winter, persistent rain can cause root rot. After rain, I apply dolomite to my garden to sweeten the soil, which has been leeched by the rain.

This week • July is the ideal month to take hardwood cuttings - using a rooting compound will help establish new roots and shoots. • Check succulents, are their leaves falling off? This can be caused by rain, they require a fungicide such as Mancozeb. • Spray deciduous fruit trees with copper oxychloride before new eaves appear - this prevents leaf curl.

PICK OF THE WEEK Nowhere To Run Friday, PRIME7, 12pm, M (1993) Looking to broaden more than his biceps, bulging Belgian JeanClaude Van Damme takes his best stab yet at the acting game, but again fails. As an escaped convict, he helps a widow (Rosanna Arquette) and her two young boys make a run from a vicious developer. There really isn’t much to see here: the plot is straight out of western territory and Van Damme goes about his job of kicking the living daylights out of the heavies. Grossly predictable and unsurprisingly short on drama.

In the article we spoke to Julia Busquets however, it has since been revealed that Ms Busquets was not authorised to speak on the behalf of HUGS or founder Kellie Mann and has made erroneous statements in regards to the organisation and Ms Mann. The article stated that ‘The charity was loosely established by Julia’s long-time friend Kellie Mann in 1998, but fell by the wayside and it wasn’t until October last year that it gained charity status, after Julia came on board to try and grow its presence’. However, we have since learned that the organisation referred to is another organisation – H.U.G.S Help Us Give Support Inc which is currently inactive while HUGS Help Us Give Support Inc was registered with the ACNC as a charity in 12 October 2015. To say this entity ‘fell by the wayside…’ is incorrect and misleading. Newcastle Weekly unequivocally apologises to both HUGS Help Us Give Support Inc and to founder Kellie Mann.
