Community hurt over greyhound racing ban Industry looks to reverse decision

From the editor Premier Mike Baird's recent announcement that the greyhound racing industry will effectively shut down from July next year has certainly stirred up a hornet's nest across the state - not least of which here in the Hunter region. The ban came about after in inquiry found "overwhelming evidence of systemic animal cruelty, including mass greyhound killings and live baiting." While I'm quite sure that nobody would agree with such practices in any way, and it's imperitave to stamp out animal cruelty in all its forms, it's also important to consider the human side of the argument. This week, journalist Georgia Osland spoke to Neath-based greyhound breeder Margaret Bright whose story illustrates, only too well, the impact such a ban will have on those who rely on the industry for an income. Read Margaret's story on page 4. So, the Pokemon Go phenomenon I spoke about last week is showing no signs of abating, especially if the scores of people throwing pokeballs along the Newcastle Foreshore on the weekend was any indication. In the interests of objectivity I have dipped my toe into the virtual reality waters and, I must admit, while it's a bit silly, it encourages exercise so it can't be all bad, right? news Community rallies to reverse greyhound racing ban

argaret Bright struggles to hold back tears as she plays a video compilation containing photos of the greyhounds she has reared, raced and loved as pets over the years. “This is my family, my life,” she says. “I lose them – I lose everything.” Margaret owns a nine-acre property in Neath with her husband, Bill. Together, with Margaret’s ill brother Mark Watt, they breed and train greyhounds to race all over the state. It’s a full-time job; currently, they have about 14 racing dogs, about as many pups in training, and seven retired dogs, which they have kept as pets. Feeding, training and transporting the dogs costs them $800 a fortnight. Margaret and Bill have been in the game for more than 30 years and greyhound racing is their only source of income.

But all of that is about to be taken away from them, under a statewide greyhound racing ban announced by the NSW government earlier this month. Premier Mike Baird released a statement indicating that the industry would be shut down from 1 July 2017, after a special commission of inquiry found “overwhelming evidence of systemic animal cruelty, including mass greyhound killings and live baiting”. The decision was based on a report released by the commission, which found that “up to 20% of trainers engage in live baiting and 180 greyhounds a year sustain ‘catastrophic injuries’ during races… that resulted in their immediate deaths”. NSW will become the first Australian state to enact a ban, with the ACT government to follow suit.

As members of the Maitland branch of the NSW Greyhound Breeders Owners & Trainers Association, Margaret and Bill plan to fight the ban tooth and nail. And they’re not alone. The association, which has around 600 members, is staunchly opposed to the ban, and has enlisted the help of Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison, who voiced her support at a public meeting last week, to circulate a petition to reverse the ban. The petition can be signed at Maitland Greyhound Club and at many TABs and local businesses over the next fortnight. NSW GBOTA racing operations director for the Hunter, Gary Minter said the issue was not going to go away. “We are united and we’ll fight it together – we’ll fight it in parliament and we’ll fight it constitutionally.” -Georgia Osland

Hunter TAFE institute to be dismantled

unter TAFE will be stripped of its status as an individual institute and merged with others across NSW under statewide reforms announced by the Baird government. The region’s 15 campuses will operate under a centralised unit, based in Sydney, under the banner of TAFE NSW. Under the reforms, the government will open a series of Flexible Learning Centres from February, giving remote and disadvantaged students access to training. Minister for Skills John Barilaro described the government’s vision for a “modernised structure for TAFE” as a “once-in-a-generation” reform

that would “reduce overheads, direct more resources to frontline teaching and guarantee TAFE is meeting training and skills needs”. Mr Barilaro said the 25-year-old TAFE Institute model was designed to create competition between individual institutes to increase student choice, however, with the variety of options available today, TAFE did not need to compete with itself. But Shadow Minister for Skills Prue Car begs to differ. She warns that staff and students should brace themselves for more cuts, campus sell-offs and a reduction in face-to-face teaching.

“Make no mistake, the Baird government is hell bent on dismantling TAFE,” Ms Car said. “Your local TAFE is as good as gone.” News of the reforms comes after the latest figures in the state budget show 126,000 fewer students are enrolled in TAFE across the state than in 2012. In the same period, 5200 teachers and support staff have been sacked – 120 of whom taught in the Hunter. There are also plans afoot to privatise services at Belmont, Glendale, Muswellbrook and Scone TAFE campuses.

Lake Macquarie council is considering revising the tenant’s lease to include a grassed area, children’s playground and barbecue area at the front of the property, previously maintained by the council. The area is already used by Cameron Park Community OOSH, however, authority over the area will give The Canopy more control of its use. Councillors discussed awarding the lessee a revised, five-year lease backdated to June. It is likely the motion will be adopted when it is put to councillors at the next ordinary meeting on 25 July.

ncessant noise, putrid smells and damage to property are just some of the problems Blackalls Park residents face on a daily basis. The area is home to a few thousand unwanted bats, residents estimate, which have colonised in suburban areas, plaguing their hosts. Lorraine Harvey has been putting up with the problem for four years. Nine months of the year, the casurina trees that surround her property, which backs onto Stony Creek, become infested with bats. Ms Harvey says it’s caused her sinus problems, disrupted her sleep, and irreversibly damaged her car, footpath – even her letterbox.

“I have to keep doors and windows closed because the smell is stomach-turning, and can be smelt inside even with doors shut,” she said. “And no matter how long you hose the footpath, the bat faeces won’t come off. “It’s a full-time cleaning job.” Ms Harvey’s neighbour, John Rose, has many of the same problems. He has documented the migration of the bats over the past few years and says each year they arrive earlier and depart later than the previous year. According to Mr Rose, the bats are hanging around five months longer than they did in 2013. Determined to have something

done about it, Mr Rose collected 700 signatures on a petition, imploring Lake Macquarie council to address the problem. He passed the petition on to Lake Macquarie state MP Greg Piper, who assured Mr Rose he would do his best to raise the matter in parliament at the end of the month. Mr Rose says he has also spoken directly with Hunter federal MP Joel Fitzgibbon, who is pushing for a senate inquiry into flying foxes. The problem is not specific to Blackalls Park; other areas such as Cessnock, Maitland and Newcastle are suffering, too. Mr Rose said the council had inspected Ms Harvey’s property, but reportedly said not much could be done, given that flying foxes were a protected species. “They may be a protected species, and we’re not against that, but they don’t mix well with humans – that’s a fact,” he said. “Just because they’re protected doesn’t mean you don’t do

The vocational education and training provider was chosen to help deliver a three-part scholarship program – coordinated by Scope Global and funded by the Australian government – designed to develop the participants’ capacity and leadership skills and, in turn, support the development of Bangladesh Vocational Education and Training sectors. It is hoped the training will go a long way toward fueling the reform of national vocational education in Bangladeshi schools. Upon completion of the 15-week Short Course Awards Program this month, participants will have earned a Certificate IV in Training Assessment. Two of those 15 weeks were spent training at Hunter TAFE’s Newcastle Campus. Bangladesh Career and Technical Training Centre educator Hasnat Jahan Munni was one of the leaders who travelled to the Hunter to participate in the program. Mrs Munni said it was an invaluable experience for all involved.

Volunteers also hand out ‘weekend survival packs’, filled with non-perishable goods such as canned food and muesli bars. They also hand out clothes and blankets as well as hygiene packs for men and women. This month, a primary health care worker will come on board to lend professional support to the homeless, to link them with local services and support agencies that can help get them on their feet. New volunteer Meaghan Giles says she enjoys being able to help those less fortunate. “I don’t worry why or how the people are in these situations, I just know they are and can be someone we know at any time,” she said. “These are lives robbed by

t may’ve been a long time between drinks, as they say, for Darwin-bred songwriter Leah Flanagan, with her last album, Nirvana Nights dropping in 2010 but, after just one listen to her new single Chills, it’s obvious that the wait is well and truly worth it. The single – a contemplative and lushly produced number is the first peak into her upcoming second album Saudades. Recorded in Midnight Oil guitarist Jim Moginie’s studio and mixed by Paul

McKercher (You Am I , Augie March) Flanagan said Saudades is a much more cohesive record than Nirvana Nights. Since nabbing a best new artist nomination at the 2008 Deadly Awards, Flanagan (who has Aboriginal, Irish and Venetian heritage) has made quite a mark on the Oz music landscape, having also toured with the likes of Liz Stringer, Jess McAvoy and as a member of the iconic Black Arm Band. Last year, she was also invited by Australian music icon Archie Roach to record a duet of his song I’ve Lied with Marlon Williams for the 25th anniversary release of Roach’s Charcoal Lane. For Flanagan, it’s all about constantly raising the bar. “It’s always been about challenging myself and not letting myself slip into any comfort zones and hopefully I’ve accomplished that with Saudades.” Leah Flanagan will perform at Sunset Studios – 1/3 Maitland Road Mayfield on Saturday 23 July.

ot a fan of running? Don’t worry, you certainly are not alone. However, a new, fantasythemed exercise app released by a Newcastle tech start-up might change your mind. Fit For Battle is a free, interactive iPhone app developed by Joel and Chad Turner, Jason Phua and Micah King with a $50,000 boost from the HCF Catalyst Slingshot Startup Accelerator Program. The choose-your-own adventure style running game takes participants through interval training – but not in an ordinary way. As the user, you are the hero in an audio story, and real-life performances and decisions influence how the story unfolds.

Speed up to charge at monsters with your sword or slow down as you dash for cover from a dragon flying overhead. Joel said it was his own lack of motivation to take up running that inspired him to develop the app with the help of his brother and mates. “I tried everything to take away the tediousness [of running],” he said. “It was boring. I knew that if you wanted to get fit there was a big mountain you needed to climb called self-motivation, and, once at the top, exercise would come easier. “So the idea came to be that we would gamify the whole process.” The app meets you at your fitness level, and you don’t need to be a professional runner to enjoy using

Flowering Dogwood When everyone in the photo studio saw the branches of this flowering dogwood, they gasped. The dogwood was at its peak of bloom – which lasts for days – and the flowers looked like little petticoats all aflutter. Here’s an instance when nature is so generous, and so beautiful, that all you have to do is let it be. Just clip away any dead branches so the flower drifts stand out. Using a glass vase makes the cloud of petals appear weightless.

Any blooming branch will do, though dogwood is especially delicate. Try flowering quince, plum or pear. 1. The vase is large, so you don’t need to use an anchor. Fill three-quarters full with water. 2. Trim each branch, cut an X into the bottom of each. Position the branches in the center and arching to the right and left. The goal is to create a flat, horizontal plane, as the branches will rest in front of a wall. If you like, trim and position a smaller branch so the flowers float below the vase. in the garden It’s winter – time to get pruning It is time to address winter pruning. Correct pruning can only be achieved by trial and error or by watching an experienced practitioner. Don’t be daunted by this, a few simple rules may assist. Don’t prune before flowering; don’t cut back too far to woody growth; use sharp, clean tools; prune deciduous trees while dormant; and always feed after pruning. Don’t be a butcher - once it’s cut off, it can’t be put back. Assess the plant to be pruned and decide why it’s being cut - avoid tearing, cut cleanly, pruning only small sections at a time. Don’t hard prune plants which are slow growing as it will be some time before your mistakes are covered. PICK OF THE WEEK Anger Management Friday, PRIME7, 10.50pm, M (2003) Life’s pretty sweet for mild-mannered New York business clerk Dave Buznik (Adam Sandler) and his girlfriend Linda (Marisa Tomei), until he is wrongly arrested for being unruly on a flight. Sentenced to therapy with a famed anger specialist, the overactive Dr Buddy Rydell (a flat Jack Nicholson, above), Dave is constantly misunderstood and his life becomes a round-the-clock nightmare. A good concept is poorly executed, leaving support players John Turturro, John C. Reilly, Woody Harrelson and Heather Graham to pick up the pieces.

A typically stylish turn from Witherspoon registers high on the laugh-o-meter in this plucky revenge-is-sweet comedy from Aussie director Robert Luketic.

Friday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2003) Nights in Rodanthe star Diane Lane (right) features in this inconsequential but charming foreign production as a recently divorced San Francisco writer who impulsively buys an Italian villa while on a 10-day tour of Tuscany. She soon endears herself to the locals, finds romance with a hunky suitor (Raoul Bova) and learns to start her life anew. Writer-director Audrey Wells (Shall We Dance?) capitalises on Lane’s naturally sunny disposition, crafting a love letter to the Italian town through her sweet mix of gentle comedy and warmhearted romance.
