The Steel Magnolia Award is a great initiative that higlights not only the fantastic work being done by Lifeline here in the Hunter region but also some truly inspirational stories from women in our community - stories that, if it weren’t for the award, might just go unnoticed. There are 14 nominees vying for the award and it's shaping up to be the biggest yet so turn to page 8 to find out more. Also this week, I was lucky to have a chat with the irrepressibly bubbly 80's pop chanteuse Martika, who will be hitting town as part of the Totally 80s extravaganza at the Civic Theatre. When our teenage popstars today are replete with overt sexuality and an ingrained cynicism, it's refreshing to speak to someone who has been there and done that and still has their feet on the ground. Hunter voters seeing red The Hunter was awash with red after Saturday’s federal election, with the entire region now firmly in the Australian Labor Party’s grasp. In Newcastle, incumbent Sharon Claydon comfortably retained the seat, pulling 47.6% of the primary vote – a 3.3% swing toward labor. Claydon defeated Liberal Party of Australia candidate David Compton, who received 29.9% of the primary vote, representing a 3.3% swing away from the liberal party. More Newcastle residents cast their primary vote for the Greens this year than in 2013, with John Mackenzie drawing 11,842 votes (13.7%) compared to Michael Osborne’s 10,258 votes (12%) at the last election. Hunter incumbent Joel

Fitzgibbon had a similar result to Claydon, retaining his seat for the labor party. Fitzgibbon walked it in over The Nationals candidate Ruth Rogers, attracting 22,265 more votes than his rival. Again, this represented a significant swing toward labor – 7.6%. In Shortland, former Charlton MP Pat Conroy ran as the labor candidate in place of retiring sitting MP Jill Hall, after the Charlton electorate was dissolved in boundary redistributions. But it was a safe bet from the outset for Conroy, who won 51.4% of the primary vote – a 3.2% swing toward labor. Jenny Barrie represented the liberal party and drew a modest

35.5% of the vote, which, yet again, hurt the party with a 1.2% swing away from it. Shortland also experienced a surge in Greens voters, with 7,606 votes for Ivan MacFadyen and a 3% swing toward the party. But it was the outcome in the Paterson electorate that was most surprising. Labor candidate Meryl Swanson caused an upset in the historically liberal-held seat, drawing 47% of the primary vote with a whopping 7.1% swing toward labor. Liberal candidate Karen Howard, who took over the reigns from retiring MP Bob Baldwin (who has held the seat for all but one term since 1996), drew 31% of the vote – a 10.5% swing away from the liberal party. A similar pattern emerged across much of the nation, with labor staging a comeback so significant that the race was too close to call on election night. With neither Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull nor Opposition Leader Bill Shorten able to claim victory, the nation’s leadership hung in the balance, and will continue to do so for some time to come as the remainder of the votes, including postal and absentee votes, are counted. At the time of printing, the Coalition held 68 seats in the House of Representatives, ahead of labor’s 67. Nearly 80% of the vote had been counted, with 10 seats in doubt. A party needs 76 seats to form a majority government in the

lower house so that legislation can be passed. When no single political party holds the majority of seats, it is said to be a hung parliament. It is unlikely the labor party will reach the magic number, but it is not yet certain if the coalition will, either. If neither side has a clear majority, a minority government might be struck by the coalition with the support of minor parties and independent crossbenchers. Malcolm Turnbull would then have to inform the governor-general that he believes he has the confidence of a majority of the house and would seek to remain prime minister. As a last resort, another double dissolution election (like the one that triggered this election) could be called and Australia would head back to the polls. In other election news, labor candidate Linda Burney was elected as the first indigenous woman in the House of Representatives, winning the southern Sydney seat of Barton. One Nation party leader Pauline Hanson made her spectacular return to politics, winning a Queensland senate seat. The party is in the running to secure another seat in Queensland, and possibly one in New South Wales. Australian media personality Derryn Hinch also won a Victorian senate seat, joining at least one Greens and one Nick Xenophon Team representative in the senate. - Georgia Osland

news City deal could give way to economic boom

T

he lower Hunter region has been identified as a sleeping giant in terms of economic growth. Lake Macquarie council has floated the idea of a Hunter City Deal, through which lower Hunter suburbs like Glendale could significantly contribute to economic and employment growth in the region. The council included this proposal in its submission to the federal government’s Smart Cities Plan, which aims to create liveable cities through improved planning, investment and technology. The proposal suggests the council works together with the state and federal governments to capitalise on what already exists in the area, such as plans for a major transport node (the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange); underdeveloped land zoned for high-density residential, commercial and industrial use; as well as detailed plans for urban renewal. In another plus, the region is close in proximity to the proposed high-speed Lower Hunter Freight Corridor between Hexham and Fassifern.

To deliver these economic benefits, an infrastructure investment of $1.2 billion over the next 10 years would be required from both public and private sectors. However, it is estimated this would deliver a $4.2 billion economic return each year. This would part-way fill the gap in jobs and homes, with population growth expected to create the need for another 115,000 new homes and 66,000 jobs by 2030. It is estimated a Hunter City Deal would generate around 10,700 new jobs and 7650 new dwellings and relieve growth pressures in Sydney. Lake Macquarie council’s general manager Brian Bell said the council had well-developed plans in place to accommodate and support this growth within the Lower Hunter Regional Strategy framework. “A City Deal for the Hunter will accelerate delivery of these targets and improve access to further growth areas within the lower Hunter,” he said. Tomaree Hospital boost Upgrades to the emergency department at Tomaree Community Hospital at Nelson Bay have commenced, thanks to a generous donation from a local family. The hospital recently received a substantial bequest from local couple Tom and Rose Pearce, on the condition that it be used to enhance the emergency department. “The project, which also includes a contribution from Hunter New England Health, will help us to provide enhanced facilities in the ED to better serve the Nelson Bay community,” Hunter New England Health Chief Executive Michael DiRienzo said. “Construction is now underway and involves refurbishment and a minor extension to the ED to accommodate the inclusion of a separate enclosed paediatric bed space, one enclosed acute care bed space, two open bay bed spaces and a new separated resuscitation area.” The works are expected to be completed by September.

our of Lake Macquarie’s most promising athletes are ready and raring to go ahead of the 2016 International Children’s Games. Isabella Warham (tennis), Millie Warham (tennis), Claudia Martin (athletics) and Holli Lavis (athletics) were hand-picked to represent the city at this year’s Games in New Taipei City, Taiwan. Presented with their uniforms last week, the convoy will travel overseas to compete in the 50th annual carnival from 11 to 16 July. The International Children’s Games is the largest multi-sport youth event in the world, and is recognised on the International Olympic Committee. In 2014 Lake Macquarie put forth its biggest contingent in the Games – a whopping 70 athletes across a range of sporting disciplines – when the city became the first in the southern hemisphere to host the games. The city placed sixth overall out of the 78 cities that competed in the Games, snagging eight medals – four gold, two silver and two bronze. The Eastlakes Domestic Violence Committee will host a trivia night at Charlestown Central Leagues Club on Saturday 30 July to raise vital funds for the committee. There will be raffles, a silent auction and lucky door prizes up for grabs. Staying Home Leaving Violence Program case manager Roz Smee said the committee, which was made up of about 10 local domestic violence agencies, including Staying Home Laving Violence, aimed to address the pervasive issue of domestic violence in the Hunter. Some of the funds raised at the trivia night will be used to fund an educational Tackling Violence Program at a local Lake Macquarie school. Tables of 10 are available, as well as individual seats. our-legged Miracle Assistance Dogs graduates often have more life experience than some people; they’ve been to concerts, festivals and fireworks displays – even on planes. And they go through all of this to help others. “One of the important things about training assistance dogs is that they have as much life experience as possible, so they can handle anything,” Miracle Assistance Dogs founder Carmel ‘Fudge’ Kaczmar said. Fudge, a 2016 Steel Magnolia Award nominee, started the East Maitland-based charity in 2011. With the help of about 50 volunteers, she trains dogs – some of which are rescued – up to 14 months old to aid those who need a little extra help to go about their day-to-day lives, particularly people with disabilities and health conditions. The dogs go through two years’ of training, which comes with a price tag of $30,000 a year. Depending on the person’s needs, the

dogs are trained to do all manner of things, from raising the alarm when a diabetic’s insulin levels drop, to rolling people into the recovery position. The dogs are then settled with their new owners all over Australia. Every three years they re-sit a public access test to make sure they are fit to work with people. Fudge is one of only seven people in Australia trained as a guide, hearing and assistance dog trainer under Queensland legislation. When asked why she does what she does, Fudge said: “I often have trouble putting it into words, but I love that we make a difference to people’s lives on an individual basis.” Miracle Assistance Dogs is self-funded by Fudge and her husband, John, with the help of donations. H.U.G.S Incorporated director Julia Busquets wants to bring H.U.G.S to the workplace.

Struggle inspires workplace mental health program personal battle with mental illness fueled Merewether’s Julia Busquets’ desire to help others. Last year, eight years after she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Julia attempted to take her life. “For people to really understand [mental illness] they need to hear confronting stories,” she said. And where better to spread the message than in the workplace. Julia is using her past to drive workplace educational programs through H.U.G.S Incorporated. The charity was loosely established by Julia’s long-time friend Kellie Mann in 1998, but it fell by the wayside and it wasn’t until October last year that it gained charity status, after Julia came on board to try and grow its presence. H.U.G.S stands for Help Us Give Support, which is exactly what the pair are trying to do, says Julia. Armed with the power of the spoken word, Julia approaches businesses in the Newcastle and wider Hunter region to deliver talks and distribute information on how workplaces

can implement policies to help employees battling mental illness. “I think a personal approach is more effective than looking at resources online,” Julia said. One concept she says most businesses have responded positively to is the notion of a mental health first aid officer – appointing one person as the go-to for all mental health related issues in the workplace. “Not everybody has to know, but if one person is kept up-todate with what’s going on then they can help,” she said. Julia added that if workplaces have a plan in place to help employees get through a crisis, such as awarding personal leave days, employees are less likely to take stress leave, which can upset workplace balance. Some of Julia’s sage advice is documented in her book, Friends: How Do You Cope When Your Friend Has Bipolar, which hit the shelves at MacLean’s Booksellers in Hamilton in March and is also available on Amazon.com. I

f it is true that culture is cyclical, one trend that we have definitely seen lately is the Australian audiences’ penchant for 80s music. As testament to that fact, a mammoth 80s extravaganza will be rolling in to town, later this month, featuring some of the biggest names of the era, both here and abroad. Titled Totally 80s, one of the main drawcards for this show is sure to be late 1980s American-Cuban songstress Martika, who told Newcastle Weekly she can’t wait to get back down to these parts. “I’m so excited - I’m at home in LA now just putting the final touches on everything and packing for this long journey to Australia,” she said. “It’s been more than 20 years since I’ve toured down there so, this show is going to be an absolute blast.” Starting life on the screen rather than the stage, with an uncredited role as an orphan girl in the hit movie musical Annie and a

subsequent role on the long-running US children’s show Kids Incorporated, Martika’s prodigious vocal talent was soon recognised by Columbia Records and she quickly hit musical paydirt with her debut, self-titled album which spawned the hits Toy Soldiers, More Than You Know, I Feel The Earth Move and Water. Martika said that that heady period of the late 1980s was filled with more than a few ‘pinch me’ moments especially given that she was just nineteen years of age when the album broke (bearing in mind this was before the teenage-centric reality TV phenomenon). “I guess that, back then, I kind of felt like I was a Martika impersonator,” she laughed. “Especially when I’d travel outside the US and there would be all these people there to meet me and I’d be thinking ‘where the hell did all of these people come from’. “Also, I’d find myself walking down Melrose in LA and I’d hear ‘hey, Martika’

and look up expecting to have bumped into an old friend, but it was someone who had connected with my music – it was quite a surreal time but also one that I wouldn’t change for the world.” With Martika’s star soaring following the release of her debut album, her stocks were pushed further into the stratosphere with her second long player Martika’s Kitchen which was helped along by none other than Prince. The virtuoso penned several songs on that album, including one of her biggest hits Love Thy Will Be Done and she said that while much of the collaboration happened over the phone and via fax, Prince’s influence on the young singer was palpable. “My collaborations with Prince were long distance so I never got the opportunity to write with him in the same room,” she explained. “But, I did get to visit Paisley Park [Prince’s compound] with my mum and just to see Prince do a full production run-through with the New Power Generation and seeing all of the work that went into their show, was really inspiring. “There were little things as well, like I showed him my lyric notebook and he was full of great suggestions like pointing out what lyrics had the best visuals. He really was an original and the world will be mourning him for a long time.” While Martika said she didn’t have any concrete plans, following the Australian tour, she added that she was always writing and not to be surprised if we see some new Martika on shelves before too long. “I’m happily married now and my husband and I are homebodies so, I don’t like a lot of pressure,” she laughed. “But I’m always writing and I’ve been thinking that maybe I’ll head back into the studio next year.” Catch Martika alongside Berlin, Limahl of Kajagoogoo, Paul Lekakis, Katrina from Katrina and the Waves, men Without Hats, Stacey Q, Wa Wa Nee and Real Life at the Civic Theatre on Thursday 28 July. THIS SPORTING LIFE hile the worlds of musical theatre and rugby league may seem poles apart, for musical satirist Denis Carnahan, they couldn’t be better matched. Carnahan, whose spot-on musical lampooning of rugby league culture has seen him go viral with his everupdating State of Origin song That’s In Queensland as well as penning

tunes for the Footy Show, Triple M’s Grill Team, Fox Sports and ABC Grandstand, will be in Newcastle later this month with his acclaimed show Rugby League The Musical. “It really is a match made in heaven,” Carnahan told Newcastle Weekly. “The beauty of it is that rugby league kind of writes the story or

libretto and I just put it all to music. I mean, you really can’t make half of this stuff up – without rugby league, there would be no poodling or bubbling – it basically writes itself, proving that rugby league is not only the greatest game in the world but also one of the best theatrical pieces ever created.” With a healthy dose of pantomime inspired farce thrown into the production for good measure, Carnahan said the show, which has just come off the back of massive runs at the Sydney Comedy Festival and Sydney Fringe Comedy, was essentially a self-fulfilling prophecy, with the sport constantly offering up new material. “Last year, we did a bunch of shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne and we were finishing the show with a song about Todd Carney and that infamous bubbling incident and, toward the end of the run, I was thinking ‘wouldn’t it be nice if there was another scandal that could take its place’ and lo

and behold Mitchell Pearce put his hand up.” While he is not shy about delving into the more controversial subjects, Carnahan added that most of his subjects take the roasting with good humour. “I have this one song called Heroes which asks the question ‘what does it take to be a hero’ and answers it with ‘head-tape’ with [Balmain great] Wayne ‘Junior’ Pearce as the archgetypal head-tape hero in the show,” he said. “Anyway recently they were officially naming a hill at Leichardt Oval as Wayne Pearce hill and they asked me to turn out and sing a song. I chose heroes and, while I’m belting it out I look over and there’s the man himself, 10 metres away singing the song along with me. Prodigious punks return Hot on the heels of a raucous Newcastle show, back in April, arguably Australia’s best ‘party band’ The Bennies are coming back for what promises to be another highly charged show at the Small Ballroom. 2016 has already been quite a whirlwind with their sophomore album Wisdom Machine spawning a Triple J Hottest 100 number 88 for the single Party Machine, after which, the band embarked on a sold out national tour with the album landing at number 40 on the ARIA Chart. t was once popular to plant a deciduous fruit tree such as peaches and plums in the home garden - now there are several deterrents. Our temperate climate doesn’t encourage, cherry, pear and apple cultivation as these fruits perform better in cooler regions, although it is possible to grow these cultivars in the Hunter where frosts are prevalant. There are some interesting fruits which can be grown successfully in the warmer coastal conditions, one of which is my favourite - the ‘Dai Dai Maru’ Persimmon. This small rounded tree has vigorous growth and it will produce fruit without cross pollination. Persimmons ripen in late autumn to early winter, their flesh is juicy and sweet when fully ripe. Another tree which which bears unusual fruit which is also glossy red is the Punica ‘Mollar de Elche’ or pomegranate. This also is small, growing only to about three metres, the fruit has jelly-like flesh covering many soft seeds this variety being self pollinating. Cheese lovers might consider planting a quince to make their

own quince jelly - the ‘Champion[‘ variety is easy to grow and is self- fertile. Quinces are hardy and thrive and produce fruit well almost anywhere, growing to about three metres, it produces attractive large white flowers. Give some thought to planting a nut producing tree - ‘American White’ Hazelnuts or a walnut. The Juglans regia unfortunately needs a big garden as it can grow to 30 metres at 20 years, but if space is available it makes a handsome specimen tree with shiny foliage and lots of nuts!

Greater Bank cuts investment home loan interest rates

Property investors can take advantage of historically-low interest rates on investment home loans at the Greater Bank.

ewly-rebranded customerowned bank, Greater Bank, has announced cuts to three, four and five-year fixed investment home loans in a move that signals the bank is keen to lend to property investors. Cuts of up to 0.20% take the headline rate for its discounted Ultimate home loan package to 3.99% for three, four and five-year terms. The bank slashed fixed rates for the same loans to 3.99% for owner occupiers in May. Greater Bank chief executive officer Scott Morgan said he believed this was the first time a lender had offered a five-year fixed investment loan at under 4%.

“A 0.90% rate difference, compared to a Big 4 bank’s advertised rate, means people could save more than $13,500 in the five-year fixed term of a $300,000 interest-only loan,” Mr Morgan said. Effective Monday 27 June, the Greater Bank’s new 3.99% interest rate applies to new loans worth more than $150,000 where the loan-to-value ratio does not exceed 85%.
