The production has just enjoyed a massive 16-week stint in New York and if you haven't seen Waters take on Lennon, the only word to describe it is "mesmeric".

That's why our story, on page 5 this week, about the great work being done by Roz and Kevin at the Cedar Creek Wombat Rescue & Hospital resonated so strongly with me. This pair have been saving sick and injured wombats throughout the Hunter Valley for the past six years - all without any government funding. It's great to see such dedication to our furry friends.

Clinics save hospital resources mergency department queues at Hunter hospitals are expected to drop with the introduction of five, in-hospital GP Access After Hours clinics across the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland regions last week. Hunter Primary Care, which runs the existing GP Access service, has partnered with NSW Ambulance to provide urgent - but not emergency - care at clinics at John Hunter

Hospital, Calvary Mater Hospital, Belmont Hospital, Maitland Hospital and Toronto Polyclinic. Paramedics who respond to triple-zero calls in the lower Hunter, and determine that patients don’t need emergency care but do need to see a doctor urgently, and can’t reach the patient’s regular GP, can contact GP Access headquarters on a dedicated ambulance-only number

hotline to refer these patients to the clinics, rather than the emergency department. Similarly, patients who present to emergency departments can be redirected to the clinics. Deliberately co-located at hospitals, the clinics have access to X-ray machines and pathology labs, and provide care at a fraction of the cost of an emergency department visit.

Patients are allocated appointment times, and services are bulk-billed for Medicare cardholders. Hunter Primary Care chief executive Dr Kevin Sweeney said this would free up resources in emergency departments across the Hunter. “The [NSW Ambulance] service gets a large number of triple-zero calls that aren’t true emergencies,” he said. “Some of them are emergencies, some only need first aid, and others are somewhere in the middle. “In the past, the only thing paramedics could do was send [these patients] to the ED, where they just queue up. This introduces a new option.” The existing GP Access service, which was piloted in Maitland in 1999 and rolled out in the Hunter in 2003, will continue to answer calls from the public hotline (1300 130 147) and provide phone advice and home visits, with 250 GPs on staff. This service takes 70,000 calls a year in the lower Hunter region and sees 50,000 patients, most of whom would otherwise end up in emergency departments. - Georgia Osland

Koalas on the agenda in Port Stephens

Senate forum a rare opportunity for voters

A long-touted plan for a koala hospital and tourism facility could be a step closer thanks to a partnership between the Hunter Koala Preservation Society and Port Stephens Council. Council is currently considering a recommendation to approve $64,000 for a feasibility study into the co-location of the hospital and tourism facility. The centre would be located at Treescape Holiday park at Anna Bay and would also be a research base for visiting veterinary and environmental specialists from the Universities of Newcastle, Sydney and

Newcastle voters will have the chance to get an up close and personal look at Senate candidates for the next federal election in a Newcastle Institute public forum, to be held next week. The forum will feature Deborah O’Neill (Labor), Lee Rhiannon (Greens), David Leyonhjelm (Liberal Democrats) and Senate candidate Holly Hughes (Liberal/National) in what Newcastle Institute spokesperson Roger Pryor said would be an ‘old fashioned public meeting’.

Osborne says the party stands to reform the law surrounding retirement villages and aged care residences; protect superannuation and the aged pension as well as the Medicare rebate for GPs; and introduce a national palliative care scheme to more freely enable assisted dying at home. The party opposes the Turnbull government’s proposed $1.4 billion cuts to aged care subsidies in the 2016 budget. “There is certainly a lot of disquiet out there amongst seniors from all backgrounds about the current political environment and the seemingly sluggish way politicians and bureaucrats react to their concerns,” Osborne said. - Georgia Osland

The Seniors United Party of Australia is newly-registered and ready to campaign for a better deal for seniors, particularly selffunded retirees, superannuants and pensioners. Marks Point’s Chris Osborne is the local face of the party, as both a candidate and the party’s state campaign director. Astute voters will remember Osborne ran as an independent in Swansea in last year’s state election. At the time he had recently quit the labor party, of which he had been a member for more than four decades. This time, he will run for the seniors party on the Senate ticket as the number three candidate, behind Gillian Evans (number one) and Kerry Koliadis (number two). The 63-year-old felt he could put his extensive campaigning experience to good use with the seniors’ party. The party was born out of the Upper North Shore area. A group of four residents – three of whom are in their eighties – were unhappy with the legislation covering retirement villages. So, they joined forces, and it wasn’t long before they were inundated with all sorts of issues affecting seniors.

Cessnock City Council is currently working on its Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP), and they want you to have your say. Council is calling on all members of the community to get involved in the plan’s development, including carers, service providers and people who live and work within the Cessnock LGA with an interest in access and equality. From June to August 2016 the project team will be consulting with

people with disability or those who have experienced a mental health issue to formulate a comprehensive plan of action to improve access and inclusion. Residents are encouraged to share their suggestions by answering the community survey online or in person at Council’s Customer Service building. Batty about wombats

t takes a special person to save a sick or dying wombat. For Roz Holme, the desire to help an injured animal is almost second nature. The registered veterinary nurse of six years runs Cedar Creek Wombat Rescue & Hospital with her husband Kevin at their 200-acre Cedar Creek property, near Wollombi. “I grew up on a farm and was raised around wildlife,” Roz said. “From the age of about eight, my dad would bring me injured animals and have me look after them. All it did was made me want to save them more.” Over the years Roz has worked in animal conservation at various zoos and sanctuaries, but it wasn’t until she and Kevin noticed the steady decline of the Bare-nosed Wombat, that they were prompted to take action. The Holmes established the wombat rescue and hospital about six years ago. Roz mostly treats wombats injured in car accidents and those that have contracted mange from a mite carried by wild foxes.

She said mange was by far the most common ailment she treated wombats for, and a condition which she recently gained approval to conduct a scientific study on. “Everybody likes a cute, cuddly wombat; nobody likes to look at a wombat with mange. “But I know if I take them in they’ll be well cared for,” she said. At one point last year, Roz and Kevin had 35 wombats in their care. They receive no government funding with Roz relying heavily on some paid work treating horses on rural properties to keep the rescue centre and hospital afloat. She is trained to do everything except perform surgery on the wombats, for which she calls upon a specialist surgeon. “Years ago, vets used to put wombats down a lot [when they were sick or injured],” she said. “But when I started vet nursing, I started to save more and more of them. Broken bones are easy to fix; so is mange.” Once they are treated, the wombats are either returned back to where they were found or

released into the wild on Roz and Kevin’s property. Roz says she will do everything in her power to save a wombat. “I have lost a few, too, but I know if I can’t save a wombat, nobody can.” To report an injured wombat, phone Kevin on 0429 482 551. - Georgia Osland

Blast from the past hotographs, an Australian Women’s Weekly and clippings from the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners’ Advocate (now the Newcastle Herald) were among the 1976 mementos buried in a time capsule, unlocked at Charlestown Library last week. It was the year the Concorde took its first flight; Apple was founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak; Malcolm Fraser was Prime Minister and the number one song in the country was Wild Cherry’s Play That Funky Music.

All those memories came flooding back when Lake Macquarie mayor Jodie Harrison; former mayor John Kilpatrick; former member for Charlestown, Richard Face, and members of the Charlestown centenary organising committee Tony Sellen and Gordon Hughes opened the time capsule in a small ceremony at the library. Local school students and other ceremony attendees enjoyed sifting through the contents of the time capsule, which was marked “not to be opened before the year 2000”.

hile it’s a sad fact that there is a growing need, in this region, for food relief charities, thankfully we have surplus food charity OzHarvest to help stem the demand. Since its establishment in Newcastle in 2010, OzHarvest has rescued and delivered more than 3.4 million meals to people throughout Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, and Cessnock. Thanks to additional funding from the nib Foundation, Oz Harvest announced plans to expand the successful food rescue program into the Port Stephens area, last week. OzHarvest Newcastle manager Monique Maguire told Newcastle Weekly that an increase in demand for the service had prompted the expansion.

“There is definitely a need in Port Stephens, but there has been an increase in demand for food relief everywhere,” she said. “We have been really lucky to get enthusiastic food donors in Woolworths at Nelson Bay and Salamander Bay.” While she said it would be too difficult to put a figure on how many people the service has helped, Monique added that OzHarvest currently delivers to around 80 different charitable agencies throughout Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Maitland and Cessnock and that they were always on the lookout for more food donors, particularly in Port Stephens, to come on board. “There are a lot of farmers up that way so if any of them have any surplus fruit and vegies we’d love them to get in touch,” she said.

They’re campaigning to raise funds to replenish their under-resourced library, which suffered significant damage two years ago when the roof collapsed, and again, last year, in the April storms, when a tree came crashing down on it. All of the school’s books fit along the shortest wall in the library. Many are looking a little worn around the ages; in need of repair or replacing. This year the school was unable to participate in the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge as there were not enough books to go around. Dymocks Children’s Charities (DCC) has partnered with Speers Point Public School to help replenish the library. Throughout the month of June, for every dollar raised by the public, DDC will contribute $2 towards the cost of new books through its national Library Regeneration program. ot on the heels of a bravura 16-week season in New York, John Waters and Stewart D’Arrietta will be bringing their beloved Lennon: Through a Glass Onion back to Australian shores, albeit with much more of a Big Apple attitude this time around. Speaking to the Newcastle Weekly John Waters said that having such a successful stint in Lennon’s adopted home was definitely a ‘pinch me’ moment. “It was absolutely daunting as John was probably more revered in New York City than he was anywhere else in the world because that’s where he chose to make his home,” he said. “So, receiving such a rousing reception there was certainly appreciated to say the least. Night after night, our audiences stood to acknowledge us, and it doesn't get much better than that.” Going beyond mere mimicry, Lennon: Through A Glass Onion is part concert and part biography – revealing the essence of John Lennon’s life and prodigious talent with a truly engaging story and a whopping 31 songs including Strawberry Fields Forever, Revolution, All You Need Is Love, Working Class Hero and Jealous Guy. John added that he and Stewart had ‘rejigged’ the production for the New York season, all with the blessing of John Lennon’s estate and Yoko Ono. “For the New York season we shifted the language a little bit to make it a tad more

‘comprehensible’ and we added a few new monologues that touch on some of his early relationships, like with his mother Julia and his aunt Mimi, which is great because there is just too much about John to fit in one show,” he said. “We were in negotiations with Yoko about licensing of certain songs and she, and John’s estate, were both very gracious in giving us, basically, everything we wanted.” Starting life, 12 years after Lennon’s death, at the Tilbury Hotel in Woolloomooloo, the show became an instant hit, selling out venues across Australia, including the Sydney Opera House and overseas in London’s West End and, most recently at New York’s Union Square Theatre. While John said he had no idea when the show premiered on the small stage at the Tilbury, that it would become the entertainment behemoth it eventually did, he added that his passion for getting inside the mind of one of his favourite performers hasn’t lost any of its lustre. “Twenty five years later and we’re still doing this, so there must be something to it,” he laughed. “Stewie and I both have separate lives and separate creative pursuits outside of Glass Onion, it’s certainly taken up a lot of our time and it can be a struggle financially, especially when breaking into new markets but we both just love it.”

Bell Shakespeare has unveiled a new scholarship in honour of founding artistic director and Hunter Valley native John Bell. Aimed specifically at students in regional and remote communities, the John Bell scholarship program will provide three students with lifechanging experiences through a week-long intensive at Bell Shakespeare’s headquarters in Sydney – observing a production in rehearsal, receiving an acting masterclass from John
