Teen’s death sparks road safety fears petition to remove a busy roundabout in Warners Bay, not far from where a teenager was fatally hit by a car, is gaining traction in the community. More than 2500 people have signed the petition – started by Fishing Point resident Nicole Antony – to remove the roundabout and install four-way traffic lights, similar to those at the Lake Road and Newcastle Link Road intersection at Wallsend. Nicole started the petition soon after she heard news of Toronto High School student Jade Frith’s death near the notorious Hillsborough Road/Macquarie Road roundabout last week. Jade, a member of Novocastrian Swimming Club, was crossing the road on her way to

training at Coughlan’s Swim Centre when she was struck by a car travelling west along Hillsborough Road. She sustained severe head injuries and several broken bones. Paramedics treated Jade on the scene before rushing her to John Hunter Hospital, where she died two days later. Nicole, who is an old friend of Jade’s mother Melissa, said after she heard about the incident she wanted to help in any way she could. “My heart aches for Melissa and Matthew [Jade’s father] and their whole family,” Nicole said. “As a mother-of-four myself, I can’t imagine losing a child.

“No one should lose a child in such a tragic way.” With Member for Charlestown Jodie Harrison’s support, Nicole hopes to collect 10,000 signatures on the petition to guarantee a debate on the issue in parliament. It is circulating in about 100 businesses in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, including McDonald’s, 7-Eleven, Genetics Fitness Club and Coughlan’s Swim Centre in Warners Bay. In the meantime, tributes for Jade are flowing on social media under the hashtag #capsoutforjade, via which her swimming teammates are posting photos of their swimming caps. Former teammate Lucy Tabrett said it was beautiful to see everyone come together at such a devastating time. “Jade was one of the sweetest, most sincere, gorgeous and spirited young girls you would ever meet,” Lucy said. “My prayers and thoughts go out to her family and close friends.” A spokesperson from Jodie Harrison’s office said Roads and Maritimes Services had spent $4 million on a study of the stretch of road between the Newcastle Inner City Bypass and Hillsborough Road/Macquarie Road roundabouts. The RMS had since extended the study to include The Esplanade, however, the findings were yet to be released. Ms Harrison said this wasn’t good enough. “The road is a disgrace and authorities have ignored it for years,” she said. “How many deaths is it going to take before this government fixes this hellish Hillsborough Road?” - Georgia Osland

Light rail plans at odds New planning documents reveal a stark contrast between the NSW government and Newcastle City Council’s visions for light rail in Newcastle. Transport for NSW has placed its Review of Environmental Factors for Newcastle Light Rail on exhibition, but there are marked differences between it and the council’s Connecting Newcastle plan. The council’s plan envisions the 2.7-kilometre light rail track running from the Wickham

transport interchange to Pacific Park on recessed tracks with a loop through Hunter Street Mall. The plan is pedestrian friendly and incorporates outdoor dining areas and trees. These features are absent from the state government’s plan. The council also plans to keep 162 of the 302 parking spaces along Hunter and Scott streets, whereas the government proposes to keep only 32 spaces.

However, Transport for NSW states on its Revitalising Newcastle website that it is working with stakeholders, including the council, UrbanGrowth NSW and Roads and Maritime Services to deliver the best light rail possible, taking into consideration community feedback. ver since she was a young girl, Belmont’s Kim-Cherie Davidson had dreamt of travelling to a village in a developing country to volunteer on a build project. That opportunity came in January when she joined a team of nine other Novocastrians on a mission to the Nepalese province of Dhulikhel, 30 kilometres southeast of Kathmandu, with not-for-profit organisation Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild the village after it was rocked by a 7.3-magnitude earthquake on 25 April, 2015. A year on from the earthquake, Kim-Cherie has taken stock of how the experience humbled her. “It was soul-building to be able to go out and help people who don’t have the safety nets we have,” she said. “When you think about it, here

in Australia, we have a lot of safety nets that we often take for granted. “I think [volunteer work] makes you more grateful for what you have.” The earthquake damaged 87 homes but miraculously no lives were lost. Habitat for Humanity is deploying volunteer teams to rebuild the homes by March 2017. Kim-Cherie’s team, co-led by Melissa Histon and Belinda Smith, built, by hand, seven toilets and sanitation pits in five days. The family that owned the farmland on which they were working had a two-bedroom, single-storey brick home, which housed eight people. Kim-Cherie said the family was extremely grateful for the help they received. Asked if she would do it all again, Kim-Cherie said she

The decision to cancel the planned visit to Newcastle by the cruise ship Insignia this weekend, due to an anti-coal protest scheduled on Sunday 8 May, has been met with disappointment by the Hunter Business Chamber. Chamber CEO Kristen Keegan said the cancellation of the visit to the Port of Newcastle and the planned actions of protestors, would have a detrimental effect on Newcastle’s “transitional” economy. Shadow Minister for the Hunter Kate Washington echoed Ms Keegan’s concerns. “Protesters have had an unintended own goal. Their efforts to confront the coal industry have damaged the Port’s reputation for cruise ships which are an important part of diversifying the region’s economy,” Ms Washington said.

PAWS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE “Given that we receive less than 2% of our funding from the government, things like Million Paws Walk are so important in ensuring that our services can continue,” she said. “Having events like this goes a long way to raising those funds, raising awareness in the community about animal cruelty and giving members of the community a fantastic, fun day out.” To that end, Ms Wynne added that, aside from the keynote twokilometre walk around picturesque Morpeth Common, there would be no shortage of things to do at this year’s event – both of the fun and educational variety.

“This year, we’ll have all the usual competitions, like the hilarious lookalike competition, an RSPCA stall with plenty of merchandise, Maitland Council will

be offering microchip checks, a vet clinic, face painting, a jumping castle and stallholders will be coming from all over,” she said. Ms Wynne added that there would also be some guests making a special appearance on the day – Big Dog and Lucky, the little bull terrier cross that was one of two survivors of the horrendous killing of nine puppies in Kurri last year. Hodkinson, after seeing the work staff do at RSPCA Hunter’s Rutherford shelter, urged the community to get behind such a worthy cause. “I’ve been lucky enough to have had a couple of tours of the shelter and, here at Rutherford, they’ve got such a great set up,’ he said. “All of the staff here work endlessly and, I think, the Million Paws Walk is a great thing to be a part of.”

or Newcastle Knights cocaptain Trent Hodkinson, there are few causes more worthy than the Million Paws Walk. “I’ve got two English Staffys – one is three and the other is two,” Hodkinson, a longtime supporter of the RSPCA, who is currently providing a media presence for RSPCA Hunter, said. “My wife and I are both animal lovers and we’ve supported the Million Paws Walk for a number of years now, but we’re really looking forward to this year, being our first one in Newcastle.” RSPCA Hunter Shelter manager Sharon Wynne said that the Million Paws Walk was one of the most integral dates on the RSPCA NSW calendar, with the proposed $500,000 target across NSW going to fund regional shelters and volunteer branches.

Giving new life to old books trip to outback NSW last year turned out to be quite an eye-opener for Newcastle resident Ross Lane. “I went on a road trip to outback NSW, from Walgett to Broken Hill, and I was really surprised at how isolated a lot of these communities were,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “I really felt a need to be able to contribute, in some way, to these communities.” To that end, Mr Lane, who had volunteered for Lifeline, sorting books for events like Bookfest, returned to Newcastle with the idea of delivering pre-loved books to these remote communities. “With things like Bookfest, it’s amazing how many books are still left over at the end, so I approached Lifeline and they donated some books for us to launch a pilot program.” And so, with 1000 books and

Downton Abbey

Newcastle seniors commended for community service former teacher and a senior tech group have been named the winners of the 2016 Newcastle NSW Seniors Local Achievement Awards. Stockton’s Azalea Thomas won the individual award. Mrs Thomas trained as a teacher, specialising in helping children with learning difficulties and disabilities. She has helped children with stutters, brain injuries and other complications. Even today, she is still called upon by preschools to help parents prepare their children for school by observing the way they play. Mrs Thomas provides this service for free, finding joy in seeing a child improve. ComputerPals for Seniors took out the group award. The over-55s group teaches seniors the basics of computer use to enrich their lives and help them become more self-reliant.

Colourful characters do their bit for charity

ome dress in character, while others do it in ordinary clothes, but the one thing Variety NSW AHA Bash participants have in common is that they all have fun. The annual Bash sees a contingent of between 70 and 90 vintage cars and their eager drivers take on a 2700-kilometre dirt road adventure to raise money for Variety – The Children’s Charity, which supports children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs. Teams make several pit stops along the way to visit regional schools with special needs units to give back some of the money raised. The charity’s regional director Jason Bourke said the Bash was a “once-in-a-lifetime event”. “It’s a lot of fun,” he said. Jason speaks from experience, having been around the Bash block once before. He participated a few years ago with a team from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation. This year he is overseeing the NSW event – which starts and ends in Newcastle – on its

25th anniversary. Over the years, the event has raised $9.5 million for kids in need. One team that has contributed to that total is Valentine husband and wife duo Tony and Carmel James. Last year, the couple raised $8000 and have hit that target again this year. Carmel entered her first Bash in 2014 with then Variety Newcastle Committee chairperson Alison Sellers. “It was so much fun and so rewarding that I was inspired, straight away, to do it again the next year with Tony,” Carmel said. Dressed in clown costumes, Tony and Carmel will leave Newcastle foreshore in their pink and white 1975 Volkswagen Superbug “Bubbles BUG1”, along with 85 other teams, on Sunday 15 May. The convoy will stop at Dubbo, Coonabarabran, Goondiwindi, Casino, Grafton and Tuncurry before returning to Newcastle on Sunday 21 May. - Georgia Osland

New school named St Bede’s Catholic College, Chisholm has been chosen as the official name of the Hunter’s newest secondary school, due to open in 2018. The announcement comes as the Catholic Schools Office and a steering committee of representatives from the Diocese and the local community plan to announce community information sessions for parents wanting more information regarding the school, to be built next to St Aloysius Primary, near Thornton. DIESEL LOOKS BACK TO HIS ROOTS hile he has been making quite the name for himself in this country, over the last 20-odd years, as being one of Australia’s most soulful guitarists and songwriters, for his latest, upcoming album, Diesel has gone back to his roots. With Americana, due to hit stores in July, Diesel has paid tribute to artists from his homeland that have influenced his own songwriting. “It’s almost an autobiographical album in many ways,” Diesel told Newcastle Weekly. “It goes right back to the first song I can remember hearing – Circle Game by Joni Mitchell, through to the music that influenced me into my teens and early 20s.”

Diesel will be hitting Nelson Bay next week, in solo mode, as part of his Pieces of Americana tour, before a repeat visit, this time to his brother Brian’s venue Lizotte’s for a three-night stand in June.

Diesel, who was born in Massachusetts before his family immigrated to Australia in 1971, said that he had always been enamored with the music of his homeland. “I grew up listening to American music and I think that fascination was fueled by moving away – a fascination for where I came from,” he said. Given that the album gives nods to such heavy hitters as Bruce Springsteen (Born to Run), Neil Young (Don’t Let It Bring You Down), Bob Dylan (Queen Jane, Approximately) and James Taylor (Fire and Rain), did Diesel feel any sense of trepidation in interpreting songs from such reverential figures? “It kind of is there in the back of your mind, but the way I’ve approached this record – I’m not interested in just doing carbon copies,” he said. “It’s more about my interpretations – in most cases I didn’t even really listen to the originals – I was going more off instincts.” - Stephen Bisset
