This week... From the editor Thanks to those readers who have been in contact with positive feedback about the first issue of Newcastle Weekly. It certainly was pleasing to see so many people picking up a copy as I was out and about in various parts of the Hunter region last weekend. This week, our cover story takes a look at the work of Justine Gaudry, whose inspired idea of creating an outlet for local designers and artists has led to the very successful Olive Tree Market in Newcastle. Demand from stallholders and strong community interest has now led to a additional location for the market – Maitland Regional Art Gallery, with the first to be held there this Saturday, May 23. Our story on Buddy Benches (page 6) shows how a simple idea can have such a big impact. Bullying and teasing in our schools is a significant problem and anything that can reduce. We also speak to Brian Lizotte, a well-known name in the Newcastle music and food scenes. Brian has also kindly shared his recipe for slowly-braised lamb shanks.

news Owner of The Olive Tree Market, Justine Gaudry
cover story
A screen print by David Hampton focusing on the Victorian Era
The Olive Tree continues to grow The Olive Tree Market has been a resounding success in Newcastle since 2008, with talented locals now also able to display their wares at a second market at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery. As owner and operator of The Olive Tree Market for the past seven years, Justine Gaudry has provided an outlet for local artists, designers and gourmet food producers to showcase their work. Her dedication to maintaining a high quality and variety of products saw the market expand from 60 stalls to more than 140, outgrowing its original home at the Junction Public School and moving to the wider expanses of Civic Park in Newcastle’s city centre. That popularity has now led to Ms Gaudry forming a partnership with the Maitland Regional Art Gallery for four markets to be held – the first of which will be this Saturday, May 23. “We have wanted to take The Olive Tree Market to other regions for some time and Maitland Regional Art Gallery was really a perfect fit,” Ms Gaudry said. 4
“It’s a fantastic gallery with a great program of exhibitions and events in a beautiful location. “The launch will be a taste of things to come. There will be three further seasonal markets in 2015 and each market will have a different line-up to keep the event interesting to visitors. “It’s a chance for visitors to wander amongst the stalls, meet the artists and discover work straight from the hands of the makers.” Ms Gaudry said the first event at Maitland would contain 75 stalls with hopes high that it will grow at the same rate as the original market. She said the Maitland market would feature different line-up at each of the seasonal dates with the Civic Park market to continue operating with the full complement of stalls.
Some of the wide range of products on offer at the first market will be screen prints focusing on the romance of the Victorian era, hand-hammered stacking rings by a local silversmith, limited edition botanical artworks in ink and handcoloured prints, women’s skirts in Scandinavian-influenced designs, hand-crafted gourmet chocolates, honey sourced from local hives and bouquets of flowers by an indigenous artist. Ms Gaudry returned to Newcastle in 2002, having spent twelve years travelling and working in Australia and overseas. “I worked in the film industry and made some documentaries and short films and also worked as a press photographer,” Ms Gaudry said. She said a chance meeting in 2008 with two sisters, Bec Thomson and Ally Buchanan, had revealed
a mutual love of markets and led to the creation of Newcastle’s first dedicated artisans market. The sisters subsequently opened a café in Newcastle’s Hunter Street with Ms Gaudry running the market solo since 2011. The Olive Tree Market will be held at Maitland Regional Art Gallery this Saturday, May 23 from 9am to 3pm, with further markets to be held on July 25, September 26 and November 28. The Civic Park market is held monthly with the next to be conducted on Saturday, June 6., followed by July 11, August 1 and September 5. Ms Gaudry said applications from new stallholders were always welcome and can be made online at www.theolivetreemarket.com.au/apply - Paul Monforte

Nisar Ali Jan who is currently residing in Nauru after seeking asylum in Australia
Helping to give a voice to refugees
H
amilton’s Love Tree Café has thrown its support behind a campaign by the Hunter Asylum Seeker Awareness group to help fund phone cards for refugees on Nauru. Love Tree owner, Fredric Holten, said he was happy to offer the use
of his café to the group for The Vast Supper, a dinner featuring food using recipes provided by Nisar Ali Jan, a Pakistani man living on Nauru after fleeing in 2007 from the Taliban who had threatened to kill all Shia Muslims. Mr Ali Jan boarded a boat
from Indonesia seeking asylum in Australia with the vessel intercepted near Christmas Island and the refugees eventually transported to Nauru. He currently has a temporary residency visa but is unsure of his future. Mr Ali Jan is an artist, but has opened a Pakistani restaurant on Nauru using his mother’s recipes. Mr Holten said the dinner on Monday, May 25 was all about helping to give a ‘voice’ to refugees and help them keep in touch with loved ones back home. “This will be a non-political event and it’s something we are quite passionate about here, it fits in with the values we have here at the café,” he said. “Our staff have been busy learning how to cook Pakistani food which has been a great experience for them.” Bookings are essential for
The Vast Supper to be held on Monday, May 25 from 6pm at Love Tree Café, in the laneway at 79 Beaumont St, Hamilton. The cost is $30 (full) and $20 (concession). To book, please call Niko Leka on 0406 296 141 or email lekaniko@gmail.com Tickets will also be available on the night and bookings can also be made online at http://tinyurl.com/ vast-supper - Paul Monforte Love Tree Café’s Pearl Nunn. Knights ready to get on a roll
swamped?
The drought has broken for the Knights with the luck of the draw now pitting them against a Brisbane Broncos side minus a number of players on State of Origin duty for Monday night’s clash at Hunter Stadium. The Knights fought hard for their 22-12 win over the Wests Tigers on Sunday afternoon, a victory that coach Rick Stone said showed the side was desperate and willing to fight for everything and get the two points. “We talked about the average fan coming in and paying his $200 to be a season ticket-holder, and what would he expect, and he would expect some real desperation and some vitality and some energy out of the boys.” Stone said. “After five losses in a row, I suppose you probably nearly start to think you forget how to win but there were some good positive signs there.” Hooker Chad Redman made his debut off the bench after Adam Clydsdale was ruled out with a shoulder injury and scored the match-sealing try in the 76th minute.
Stone said the club was happy and proud for Redman to have made it to first grade. “He was pretty sharp out of dummy-half, his service was pretty good and he scored a valuable try,” he said. “It’s been a work in progress for a while to get a first-grade debut. He got his chance and he took it with some confidence.’’ Earlier, the Knights NSW Cup team were defeated 20-18 despite three tries by Honeti Tuha. In the under 20’s match, the Tigers proved far too strong in their 5216 victory. Monday night’s NRL match against the Broncos gets underway at 7pm with the under 20s beforehand at 4.45pm. Kerbside collection for Port Stephens Port Stephens Council has announced it will commence a kerbside green waste collection from Monday, June 1, following the storms that ravaged the Hunter region earlier this month. Each property will receive one service and every Port Stephens property is eligible, with the exception of Rural Rated Properties 4,000sqm or over. Occupants of properties exceeding 4,000sqm in size are advised to consult Council's Backyard Burning fact sheet for more information. Waste Management Coordinator, Aaron Malloy, said the decision to run a kerbside
green waste collection came from Council's consideration of those with limited access to drop-off sites and added that due to limited resources, the process could take anywhere from two to four weeks. Residents with the means to take their own green waste during designated free dropoff days are being encouraged to continue to do so to ensure remaining vegetation is collected quickly. All others should place their vegetation on the kerbside on Sunday, 31 May, and are asked to be aware that it may take a few weeks to collect.

The ear is the receiver that picks up sounds and sends them to the brain. The brain turns those sounds into meaning. The less sound information your brain receives, the harder it has to work to make sense of it. This is why hearing loss can be tiring. And more than that, when the sound signals from your eyes are compromised, your brain has to work harder to fill in the gaps.

Reece Mastin will bring his new sound to Newcastle next month.
MASTIN STILL SHOUTING LOUD
It may’ve been a couple of years since we last heard anything from 2011 X Factor winner Reece Mastin, with his last single, Girls (All Around the World) dropping in 2013, but don’t go thinking he’s been resting on his laurels.
I
n fact, there’s been quite a bit happening in ‘Camp Mastin’ over the last little while with the singer parting ways with his label, Sony, and inking a new deal with indie label, Social Family Records, picking up new management in the form of Mahalia Barnes, becoming a White Ribbon Day ambassador as well as going through quite a sonic transformation. While best known for giving us such charttopping bubblegum pop as Good Night, Shut Up and Kiss Me and Shout It Out, Mastin is back with a new five-track EP, Rebel and the Reason a bold, and brash rocker full of massive guitars thumping drums and more hooks than you can poke a stick at - which he will be showcasing when he hits Newcastle for a special all-ages show next month. “It’s really nice to be starting fresh again like this with a new sound and a new approach,” Mastin told Newcastle Weekly, adding that he pulled out all of the stops during the recording of the EP.
“This time around, I went into the studio with a full band, which was just so much fun to do, and I also wanted to make this EP as honest as I possibly could, so there’s a bit of anger in there a bit of love and a little bit of fun in there as well. “I know it seems like it’s been a long time coming but hopefully the fans will agree it was worth the wait. I can definitely say that this is completely 100 per cent me and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s turned out.” Mastin said that, while there was some trepidation, initially, surrounding the change in sonic direction, it was ultimately about himself growing as an artist, rather than bowing to what he thought people expected of him. “There were definitely nerves there but there were a couple songs on the EP, like [lead single] Rebel and the Reason that we had been playing on the road for a little while now and the audience seemed to take to them,” he said. “But, it is a risk, but if you don’t challenge yourself and take risks, you’re never going to
develop or evolve.” Mastin, who burst onto the scene as the winner of the 2011 series of X Factor said that the most important lesson he took away from his time on the show was to always respect the fans. “If X Factor taught me anything it was that you really need to respect the fans,” he said. “People who dig your music are your whole career – it’s the fans who have got me where I am so its crucial to respect them.” While Mastin has definitely seen his fair share of fanatic fandom in his time on the road he said he had come to respect their fervent devotion. “It does get pretty crazy at times,” he laughed. “Like, I’ll be at a motel and I’ll post a pic on Instagram of me by the pool and next thing these fans show up who have Googled every hotel in the area looking for the pool. They’re just like detectives and you kinda have to admire that.” Reece Mastin – Cambridge Hotel, Sunday, June 14 (All-ages). - Stephen Bisset 13

Also, with more artists still to be announced, this one is shaping up to be a gig for the ages. “The SES did a really fantastic job for the community during the recent storms.” “I think that they don’t really get enough recognition for all of the hard work that they do, so we wanted to get together and put on a little show to say thanks,” organiser Dave Forbes told Newcastle Weekly. “Also, there is a bit of a perception out there that us musos can tend to be a bit egotistical and selfish, which we are at times, but we’re also capable of coming together for a great cause.” Aside from a formidably talented and eclectic bill, Forbes

added that there will be plenty of activities on offer for the whole family to enjoy. “It really will be a great day out for the family,” he said. “There’ll be face painting and jumping castles for the kids as well as market stalls so it’s a great way for people to show their thanks to
the SES and all the hard work that they do.” For more information on the gig visit the Operation Cyclone Facebook page. Operation Cyclone – Wickham Croatian Sports Club, Sunday, June 14. - Stephen Bisset

A veritable “who’s who” of the local muso community will come together for a special benefit gig, next month, to say thanks to the Hunter Region SES who went above and beyond during the recent wooly weather that gripped the region. Dubbed Operation Cyclone, the gig will see 100 per cent of the $5 entry fee donated directly to the Hunter region SES, with other money being raised on the day from donations and charity auctions. As well as all that, the list of Hunter-based talent that have put their hands up for this special show is impressive to say the least – Dave Carter, Bob Corbett, Ngariki, Glam Slam, Zane Penn, Voodoo Express, Annie O’Dee and the Hotshots, Brien McVernon, Loose Bazooka, Backfire featuring Dai Pritchard,

Ash Grunwald will give Newcastle a taste of his new single next month.
MAY ENTERTAINMENT FRI 22ND:
Radiators 10th July 2015
Having just come of the back of a bravura stint at Canadian Music Week, roots rocker Ash Grunwald is certainly wasting no time, heading out on a national tour to promote his powerhouse new single River from his soonto-be-released long player Run. “I have been pretty busy of late, but it is a good problem to have,” Grunwald told Newcastle Weekly. “I just got back from Toronto - I was there for Canadian Music Week, which proved to be quite fruitful, then I had a bit of a surfing holiday in Nicaragua and now I’m back here for this tour then back to Canada then back to Australia then back to Canada and then come back for the launch of the album and start the touring cycle all over again.” Helmed by acclaimed producer Nick DiDia (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam) at the helm and in collaboration with Ian Perez from Wolfmother and Pete Wilkins from Blue King Brown, River is a powerful and emotive moog-tinged track that bristles with as much passion as the lyrics that underpin the music. “I started off writing a song about coal
SMILIE GETS A GUN
seam gas mining which I really believe is a cancer on the country and not just some remote problem that is happening in far flung corners of Australia,” Grunwald said. “However, I found that the specific experiences I was writing about weren’t really gelling with the boogie that we had going on so I decided to open it up to a more general space to kind of shed light on the fact that division amongst a country’s citizens creates a smokescreen for governments to sneak behind unnoticed to make their corruptions law. Also, how we seem to be at a tipping point in this country where people who would never consider themselves radicals, like myself, are getting fed up with the way governments, banks and corporations are squeezing the population dry. “It makes you wonder what kind of democracy we live in where people are scared to talk about issues for fear of being called a radical. Hopefully the situation is changing.” Ash Grunwald - Cambridge Hotel Saturday, June 13. -Stephen Bisset

There’s no denying that iconic UK soul singer Joe Cocker was in possession of a mighty set of pipes. It would follow, then, that if a tribute were to be staged for Cocker in this country, the perfect choice would have to be the booming voice of Doug Parkinson – one of the best soul singers this country has ever produced. Parkinson will be bringing his Cocker tribute to Lizotte’s this weekend – always an attractive proposition for the ex-pat Novocastrian. “I always get the warm and fuzzies when I’m back in Newcastle,” Parkinson told Newcastle Weekly. “Being from Newcastle originally, it’s always great to get back you tour birthplace.” Parkinson said that the idea of staging a tribute to Cocker had been floating around for some time. “I have had this bee in my bonnet for sometime about doing something in relation to Joe Cocker because I feel that we have similar stories to tell,” he said. “We’re both soul singers
and we’ve both had hits with Beatles songs [Dear Prudence for Parkinson, A Little Help From my Friends for Cocker] and also the fact that he recently passed away, I think, made the concept that much more relevant.” Parkinson, who started life onstage quite by accident, said he was astonished that he has been able to parlay that early mishap into a career spanning more than four decades. “Sometimes I feel like a witness to my own life – everything has just gone by so fast and I’m just so fortunate that I’m still afforded the opportunity to perform after all these years,” he said. “But it all happened by accident – I’d been to the pub with a few mates and we went to a suburban dance looking for girls so I decided to get onstage and sing a tune in the hope of impressing a girl and the rest, as they say, is history.” Doug Parkinson Honours Joe Cocker – Lizotte’s Lambton, Saturday, May 30. - Stephen Bisset

Mark Wells will be pulling out all the stops for Cystic Fibrosis research
WELLS AND FRIENDS SING OUT FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS Newcastle-based songwriter Mark Wells will be returning to his old alma mater of St Pius X Adamstown for a special benefit concert to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) research.
Wells will be hitting the school’s Factory Theatre next Friday along with his 7-piece Big Band featuring such talent as Dave Carter, Jason Bone, Justin Ngariki, Brian Daley, Matt Gaudrey and Robbie Long.
“It is shaping up to be quite a good night,” Wells told Newcastle Weekly. “There are a fantastic bunch of musos that I’ll be playing with who can all more than hold their own onstage. Also, it’s going to be a bit of a trip for me going back to Pius as I played my first ever gig there, in St Anne’s Hall and it was the first time I’d ever played with a band – it’s kind of full circle.” Funds raised on the night will directly fund CF research programs at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) – a cause close to the singer’s heart. “I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, which is the most common life-threatening genetic disease, at birth,” Wells explained. “I’d go through periods of good heath and periods of bad health and a few years ago, I was very unwell and I was approached by HMRI to take part in a clinical drug trial and I basically went from not being able to walk around the block to being
able to run five kilometers and things have just gone up and up and up. The whole experience really highlighted to me the great work being done at HMRI and also how important it is to raise awareness about CF so we can beat it.” Wells, who recently snagged an ARIA nomination for his co-write with good mate Morgan Evans on Evans’ song One Eye For an Eye, said he was currently working on a new album – the first fruits of which will be played at the benefit show. “There’ll definitely be a few new tunes in there and we’re also working up a version of the song that Morgan and I wrote together as well as a few surprise covers which will definitely keep the band on its toes.” For tickets and more information, visit hmri.com.au/ mark-wells-concert. Helene Leane
MEET THE ARTIST: HELENE LEANE When did you first know you wanted to be a professional artist? Most artists live their adult lives desiring to become professional but find it difficult to take that plunge, mainly for economic reasons. Ten years ago I took that plunge and find myself swimming. Describe your work. Contemplative. I seek the essence of things. I make monotype prints and paint with acrylics. What inspires you? The knowledge that humanity shares emotional, intellectual and spiritual journeys and that art can connect all three. What has been your greatest achievement? Creating bodies of artwork which have meaning to the people around me. I have an upcoming exhibition at Gallery 139 in Newcastle which is my first with the gallery, as a represented gallery artist. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to exhibit with a gallery and now have that support from a gallery director who also knows what it’s like being an artist.
What would be your advice for budding artists? To create a unique artwork, it helps if you have a rich combination of emotion and intellect. And be positive that what you create is worthwhile and has value. Helene Leane has an upcoming exhibition at Gallery 139 on Beaumont St, from June 3 to June 20, which is based on the interior elements (lino and lace) of Newcastle’s only Heritage-listed building, Miss Porter’s House. There will be an official opening on Saturday 6 June from 2pm and a free artist talk on Saturday 13 June. You can find out more about Helene by visiting her page on the gallery website: gallery139.com. au/gallery-artists-1/helene-leane

ON THE BIG SCREEN Cinemas have been filled with blockbuster after blockbuster this year. This coming week we turn our attention to espionage, legal thrillers and a French connection. Spy starring Melissa McCarthy is a comedic espionage film about a CIA analyst who, after her operatives Jason Statham and Jude Law go missing, needs to go undercover, finding herself having to infiltrate the world of a
deadly arms dealer and prevent a global disaster. Woman In Gold sees the on-screen pairing of Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds. Based on a true story, Maria Altmann (Mirren), sixty years after fleeing Vienna during World War II, takes on the government to recover artwork she believes rightfully belongs to her family. Together with her lawyer (Reynolds), they go all the
way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court. French Film enthusiasts will delight in the 2015 French Film Festival to be held at Tower Cinemas Newcastle. More details at newcastlefrenchfilmfestival. weebly.com Garth Weiley – General Manager Event Cinemas, Glendale and Tower Cinemas Newcastle.
FILM REVIEW
the ride where Max’s knowledge of the apocalyptic milieu and an insatiable desire for revenge on his kidnappers make him a worthy addition. The cinematography is spellbinding, Miller’s direction has never been more incisive and Hardy does a brilliant job in Mel Gibson’s stead as the stoic good guy. Verdict: A thrill-a-minute action fest. 4 stars.

BRIAN’S CONSUMING PASSIONS
Shakespeare said “if music be the food of love, play on” and there are few in this region who have taken the Bard’s words to heart like Brian Lizotte. Music and food have always loomed large in his life and since expanding his Lizotte’s empire into Newcastle in 2009, the venue has become one of Newcastle’s cornerstones of great music and great food – giving Newcastle punters a taste of the best national and international artists while, at the same time, promoting the plethora of talent in Newcastle and surrounds. Newcastle Weekly caught up with Brian Lizotte to find out what makes him tick.
Brian Lizotte (right) onstage with his brother Mark Lizotte aka Diesel. Brian Lizotte with comedian Julia Morris. Oh So Sticky Date Pudding with Coconut Butterscotch Sauce and Cocoa Cinnamon Ice Cream
Macadamia Nut Crusted King Prawns with Lemon Myrtle Mayonnaise.
Who or what was it that first inspired your passion for food? My first inspirations to follow the hospitality and food and music industries were at home with all my family as a child. We would sit down to a family dinner and share mum’s home-cooked meals and listen to music my dad would put on. Can you give us a bit of a rundown on how you got started in the industry? I was at high school and a PA announcement came on during a lunch break that said a hospitality course at college was on offer. I did a diploma in catering and hotel management and then started traveling. I met my then brother's [Mark Lizotte aka Diesel] girlfriend who was doing some part-time catering in a famous recording studio called Rhinoceros [part-owned by INXS] and then I asked her if she wanted to go into business. The studio
catering flourished from there. You’ve certainly had some big names pass through the doors. Is there a particular favorite and is there any “white whales” that you’d love to get on the Lizotte’s stage? Hard one that one!! Some of my best memories are Doc Neeson clambering over on the front row tables while clutching at the ceiling singing “no way”, Eric Bibb, Diesel of course doing so many shows and so many multiple sell outs over the years. Playing trombone with him as well as the Black Sorrows and Eugene Hideaway Bridge. The Schools’ initiatives and seeing and nurturing so many young up and coming musicians. Seeing Karise Eden perform some of her first ever shows, James Morrison, Patti Griffin, Steve Earle, Mick Fleetwood staying till 2am for a chat after two sold out shows. So many memories. You have certainly struck a chord with Novocastrian music and food fanciers in your time here. What do you think it is about the Lizotte’s formula that clicks? When you get a chance to marry two of life’s greatest pleasures it becomes a no-brainer. Mixed with food, music, passionate staff and a venue that ooozes character and has been
looking after peoples social lives for over 105 years, really does make it very attractive for our customers Do you have a favorite dish to prepare or is that something that changes on a regular basis? Seasonal foods are wonderful but I am a stickler for our Macadamia nut king prawns. Our squid with Passionfruit sauce and in winter you cant go past the Oh So Slowly Braised Lamb Shanks. If you could eat one dish for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? My kingfish carpaccio as it has all of my favourite ‘zing zang’ ingredients! Chilli, lots of fresh herbs like coriander Vietnamese mint, ginger, basil, mint, parsley, garlic, lime, lemon grass, Kaffir lime leaf, virgin olive oil and a good cider vinegar. If there’s one thing people need to try when visiting Lizotte’s, what would it be? Ahhhhh, what about the Screaming Groupie Cocktail? Try a share style entrée as sharing plates and family style lends itself to relaxing! But they also should have a tour of both upstairs and downstairs of the venue to get a feel for the whole place. There are some big changes happening to celebrate our 6th birthday including a huge Open Day on Sunday June 7. 25

PICK OF THE WEEK Moulin Rouge! Friday, SBS1, 9.45pm, M (2001) MGM shakes hands with MTV in Baz Luhrmann’s lavish romantic musical, set in Paris, on the cusp of the 20th century. Poet Christian (Ewan McGregor), transfixed by the bohemian wonder of an underground nightclub, befriends painter Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo) and writes a play that thrusts him into a dizzying romantic dilemma with the club’s star attraction, Satine (Nicole Kidman, above). The audacious kaleidoscope of colours, costumes and sounds makes this an unforgettable, euphoric joyride.
Friday
Bowling For Columbine
Cowboys & Aliens Thursday, ONE, 9pm, M (2011) You may have already scoffed at the title of this sci-fi/western mashup, but the impressive cast – including Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford (left) and Olivia Wilde – and director Jon Favreau steer this tale to less ridiculous grounds. Escaped outlaw Jake Lonergan (Craig) is on a mission to track down and deliver justice to a horde of aliens who are terrorising the Old West. It’s all a bit of good fun, but for a film that from first impressions demands not to be taken seriously, there is just not enough in the way of comedic nods.
Sunday, ABC2, 8.30pm, M (2002) Michael Moore (right) is behind this profoundly disturbing documentary, unearthing the truth behind one of the most serious social issues affecting the US: guns. In exploring the who, how and why, Moore’s revelatory findings pack enough heat to leave you moved beyond words. Using the Columbine High School massacre as a point of research, the tubby everyman traces America’s firearm follies through alarming facts and figures, scrutinising the media, corporations, politicians and various celebrities. One of the most important films in decades.

The best way for Jackie to achieve happiness with loved ones this year is to learn to read between the lines. This is very much a time when she should believe what she sees and feels and not to place too much emphasis on what people say as someone could be deliberately evasive or deceptive. Jackie will achieve a lot more this year if she focuses on her long term goals and her immediate needs.

You are something of a keen observer which is just as well because you need to pay attention to detail, body language and to what is being said if you are to negotiate a successful end to a professional or domestic matter. You’ll gain more by holding back.
There’s a strong possibility that trouble is brewing, either on the work front or concerning affairs related to your usual routine. Rather than trying to keep things under control, it might be better to let matters slide until they reach flash point, then settle them once and for all.
If you have connections interstate or overseas they are definitely going to be getting in touch. It’s also going to be a great time for those involved in education, however if you are taking any kind of tests or examinations be certain to read the test sheet twice.

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
After a period of optimism in relationships and friendships you now seem to be hitting a rocky patch. The next few weeks are unlikely to make you feel emotionally secure but don’t let the current difficulties persuade you that the issues you are facing are anything that time cannot heal.
Mars is moving through the air sign of Gemini and because of this, it certainly won’t pay for you to get into disagreements with bureaucrats, officials or the tax office. Resist the desire to put them in their place because this will only make a difficult situation worse.
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
There is quite a heavy planetary focus at the moment on your opposite sign of Gemini, therefore the next few weeks you will gain far more in all areas of life if you proceed in harness or at least consider the thoughts and ideas of other people.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21 During the next few weeks your focus will be on your money and finances and you will be saving rather than splurging. What’s more you won’t be prepared to do anything for nothing because your time and energy are valuable. Double-check all bank statements and financial arrangements.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 The behaviour of loved ones could set you wondering whether they are really on your side or secretly working against you. Erratic though their actions may be, the end result of the changes that follow could be to break old and unhelpful patterns and eliminate certain unhelpful obstacles.
Mercury is retrograde and so over the next few weeks you need to watch your Ps and Qs because it will be easy for you to say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Delay signing important documents at work or involving finances until 12 June.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
be laying the foundations for a new scheme or plan, but make sure you build deep enough to ensure a strong base. You will find colleagues helpful and so don’t hesitate to ask for their help or advice.
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19 There is a planetary focus in your chart for the next few weeks on children, sports, socialising, creativity and romance. There is likely to be a gleam in your eye and a spring in your step which proves to be irresistible to the opposite sex.
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20 Over the next few weeks you are going to be devoting a great deal of time and energy to family, property and domestic issues. Even when it comes to enjoying yourself, you may prefer to invite your friends back to your home. We all need time for our domestic life.

FERNLEIGH TRACK
My favourite things
“I just love going for a walk along the track. You get to see so many of the different parts of the environment along the way.”
COOKING “I don’t get a lot of time to cook these days, but I particularly enjoy slow-cooking.”
Jodie Harrison Jodie Harrison is fast gaining a reputation as one of the hardestworking politicians in the state, having being elected to the NSW Parliament as the Member for Charlestown in August last year to go along with her role as the Mayor of Lake Macquarie. Labor leader Luke Foley is obviously a fan of Ms Harrison’s work, recently making her the Shadow Minister for Women, for the Prevention of Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault, for Early Childhood Education and for the Hunter. - Paul Monforte
