From the editor NAIDOC Week (July 5-12) is a chance for all Australians, not just those from Indigenous communities, to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. There are a number of activities in our region for the remainder of the week. Head to www.naidoc.org.au for specific details. I was quite alarmed this week to discover that 280 Australians are diagnosed with diabetes every day (see story on page 6). We’re now up to 1.7 million people living with diabetes in this country and that only accounts for those we know about. Readers may find that they have a number of the symptoms mentioned in our story and I urge you to speak to your doctor about the simple test available to see if you have diabetes or are at high risk of developing it. Our article on page 4 tells the story of 12-year-old Kirah Crook’s struggle with Crohn’s disease and her uncle’s commitment to raising awareness of the chronic condition. Like many people, I had heard of Crohn’s but didn’t know just how severely it affects people’s lives.

No obstacle too big to overcome for Kirah Uncle’s relentless efforts to support niece’s battle with Crohn’s disease hen Michael Tully saw his niece Kirah Crook’s constant struggle with Crohn’s disease, he vowed to do everything possible to raise the public profile and awareness of the chronic condition. Crohn’s disease can involve any part of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus but most commonly affects the small intestine and/or the colon. Typical symptoms include the frequent and urgent need to use the toilet, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, fatigue and weight loss, often resulting in depression, anxiety and isolation in sufferers. More than 75,000 Australians have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The number of Australians with IBD is expected to rise dramatically to a figure of 100,000 in the next decade. Australia has one of the highest incidence and prevalence of IBD in the world. Complications resulting from Crohn’s disease including an intestinal obstruction or narrowing of the intestinal wall, known as strictures; abscesses and skin tags occurring just outside the anus; fistulae, which are abnormal channels connecting different loops of intestine to itself or to other body organs, ulcerated tears or cracks in the lining of the anal canal as well as malabsorption and malnutrition. Mr Tully’s determination has resulted in the formation of ‘Team Kirah’ with a target of $25,000 set for the fundraising efforts. Money raised will go towards Crohn’s & Colitis Australia, a not4
for-profit organisation aiming to make life more liveable for Australians with Crohn’s disease and to fund further research into finding a cure. To date, a trivia night, a dinner at Rustica Newcastle Beach, a marathon swim/ride/run day and a family barefoot bowls day have raised $20,000. This Saturday (July 11), a night of fish racing will be held at Alder Park Bowling Club to boost that total before Mr Tully heads to Switzerland to compete with friends Alice Grant and Kime Witt in a triathlon in Zurich on July 19. Kirah, now 12 years old, was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at the age of five and has recently undergone a complete colectomy, where her larger bowel has been permanently removed, making her colostomy bag irreversible. Kirah’s mother Cathy said her daughter’s Crohn’s included structuring of the bowel, requiring the need for operations at sixweek intervals. “She has had multiple colonoscopies and endoscopies, whilst she struggles to maintain regular schooling and just being a kid,” Mrs Crook said.
“We have tried a series of drugs and weekly injections, including natural therapy focusing on diet and stress, yet this disease continues to cripple her childhood. “She was once a feisty toddler, although she continues to be a resilient little fighter, strong enough to smile through everything. “She is my hero and will always be to all of us.” Mr Tully, owner of Studio One Health and Fitness Centre in New Lambton, said Ms Grant, Ms Witt and himself had recently tested themselves in preparation for the grueling event in Zurich. “On our race trial weekend, we swam 3.8km on the Friday, rode 180km on Saturday and ran 42.5km on the Sunday,” he said. “They are the same distances as Zurich but they’ll need to be done be back-to-back, not on following days.” Donations for Team Kirah can be made at https://give.everydayhero.com/au/team-kirah To follow the team’s fundraising efforts, search ‘Team Kirah’ on Facebook. - Paul Monforte

Celebrating and recognising Indigenous culture AIDOC Week is held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Newcastle is celebrating NAIDOC Week from July 5-12,
opening the festivities last Monday with a community day which welcomed a crowd of around 200 community supporters. “Monday’s event was just fantastic, it was well supported, there was a lot of people from out
of the area that were in attendance, unfortunately the weather was a bit of a battle with the terrible cold wind,” Awabakal Ltd director, Tammy Wright said. The day started with a community march from Newcastle Town Hall ending at the foreshore, where the crowd was immersed in culture, with live music from bands which featured local talent, various traditional workshops, various children’s activities and food stations. “This is also the first year in which we have provided free health checks, which produced an amazing result with the support and feedback; it was really great to see so many people supporting that initiative,” Ms Wright said. NAIDOC Week is a time for everyone to come together and celebrate, acknowledge and recognise the work that has
been going on in the community and getting to know the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and what they have done to contribute to the makeup to Australia itself. The theme this year is: ‘Standing on Sacred Ground- celebrate, respect and learn’. It is reflecting on the cultural and spiritual connection to land and sea. “The themes are important and tie in with the creation stories and the significant sites in our community, it allows us the opportunity to reflect and understand where it stands within our lives,” Ms Wright said. With many more events unfolding over the coming days, there is something for everyone to enjoy or participate in to celebrate NAIDOC Week. Alarming figures on prevalence of diabetes in Australia ealth experts are using National Diabetes Week (July 12-18) to highlight the prevalence of the chronic disease with a recent study showing that 280 Australians are diagnosed every day.
Diabetes NSW Credentialled Diabetes Educator, Sue Leahy said there were now estimated to be 1.7 million people living with diabetes in Australia. “The vast majority of people, around 85%, have type 2 diabetes,”
Ms Leahy told Newcastle Weekly. “Typically the symptoms of type 2 are tiredness, lethargy, dry skin, having to go to the toilet often and blurred vision. “Type 1 is an autoimmune disease with symptoms such as excessive thirst and urination, unexplained weight loss, irritability and weakness and fatigue. Generally there is an abrupt onset of these symptoms. Ms Leahy said that while diabetes was a very serious disease, it was able to be managed by a combination of healthy lifestyle choices and medication. “For some people, their Type 2 diabetes can be controlled by a combination of diet and exercise. Others may require medication in addition to that.” Gestational diabetes occurs when the hormones made by the placenta during pregnancy stop the body’s insulin from working properly,
causing blood glucose levels to rise. Generally the condition disappears after the birth of the child. The campaign call for this year’s National Diabetes Week is “What do you need to know about diabetes?” with the aim being to aim of the campaign is to increase knowledge and understanding in the general population about diabetes so those that don’t have diabetes better understand the condition and can support those who do. During National Diabetes week, the Diabetes NSW resource centre in Newcastle will be holding open days every day from Monday 13 to Friday 17 July. Mai-Wel’s Celebrity Comedy Debate will be held at Hunter Valley Grammar School on Saturday, August 8, featuring comedian and TV presenter Cal Wilson and well-known actor Lex Marinos. “The Creative Arts Program has a base in the Mai-Wel Hub at 555 High Street, Maitland,” Mai-Wel chief executive, Pennie Kearney said. “We are thrilled with the layout and performance space for artists of all styles; painters, singers, dancers, musicians and performance artists. “Our recent fundraising events have allowed us to purchase some sound equipment and musical instruments, together with painting supplies and easels. “The participants involved to date have had a fabulous time and they are learning so much. They have regular opportunities to display their art or give live performances in local venues across Maitland with other local artists,
providing a great opportunity for integration and inclusion.” Mai-Wel provides services and programs to more than 800 clients in the Lower Hunter region. The topic for the Celebrity Comedy Debate will be ‘Youth is wasted on the young’, with Ms Wilson, Maitland veterinarian, Ian Gollan and Deputy Director of Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Brigette Uren taking on the affirmative argument. Mr Marinos will lead the opposing view with support from relationship coach, Tara Whitewood and local sports journalist, Josh Callinan. Homestead coordinator, Sandy Earle said. “There’s plenty of nostalgia for the older folks and to the young ones it’s all new discoveries. “As a special feature, the Redcoat Soldiers from the 73rd Regiment of Foot will be encamped on site
and will parade and demonstrate musket firing,” Ms Earle said. “Our rural heritage site is a real picture at the moment and provides the perfect backdrop for this whole event. “The money raised on the day contributes to the ongoing running and restoration of the heritage site.” Ms Earle said visitors always enjoyed watching the blacksmith manipulate red-hot iron into useful and decorative objects and the ropemaker, sheep shearer and straw broom maker are happy to answer questions as they demonstrate their crafts. There will also be an opportunity for people to try their hand at water divining or playing croquet. Craft makers and artisans will gather to show their heritage skills and display handmade items for
sale. Collectors and enthusiasts will have a number of heritage items on display. Children are able to pat farm animals, have a cart ride with Harry the Clydesdale and watch calves being bottlefed. Bring a scarecrow for the Scarecrow Competition and vote for the best one. There will also be plenty of homemade refreshments, including scones straight out of the old wood stove and damper from the campfire served with golden syrup. Peak Into The Past will be held from 10am to 3pm on Sunday, July 26 at Tocal Homestead which is located at 957 Tocal Road, Paterson. Entry is $10 adults, $8 concession. Children are free. Lawyers from Legal Aid NSW are starting a new free twice-monthly legal service in Maitland on July 15. “We can help with everyday legal problems, like fines, neighbourhood disputes, wills, loans, housing or consumer issues,” Legal Aid NSW’s Tendayi Chivunga said. “These problems often start small but can get out of hand and become more difficult to resolve over time. “Often, all is needed is some legal help, and the issues can be sorted out. Our lawyers will listen to you and advise you on your next steps,” she said. “We recently helped a client who had problem with a builder she had hired. After we gave her legal advice, she knew what to do and the matter is progressing towards a resolution through the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.” Common everyday issues Legal Aid lawyers can help with include: • Money issues like fines, debts,
loans, scams and problems with Centrelink • Consumer issues like unfair contracts and dodgy deals • Housing, tenancy or mortgage problems • Work issues, discrimination, human rights and immigration matters. This new legal service will be available at Maitland Neighbourhood Centre twice a month on Wednesdays, from 10am-12pm. Legal Aid NSW also offers free specialist legal advice on mortgage matters, at the Maitland Centrelink office. This service also runs fortnightly, on a Wednesday. Hodkinson pledges future to Knights he Newcastle Knights are confident NSW Blues halfback Trent Hodkinson is the man to steer the club’s group of talented youngsters after the Bulldogs playmaker signed a three-
year contract earlier this week. Knights CEO Matt Gidley said Hodkinson’s signing was a major coup for the club. “Trent is the current NSW halfback and has proven on many
occasions, in grand finals and Origin matches, his ability to steer his team to victory,” he said. “Our club has a young and talented back line in place and we look forward to Trent assisting our team to realise their potential.” Meanwhile, more than six hundred games of NRL experience is expected to return to the Knights’ NRL team for Friday night’s clash with the Canberra Raiders as the burden of injuries and suspension begins to clear. Jeremy Smith (sternum), Jarrod Mullen (toe), Tyrone Roberts (ankle) and Kade Snowden (suspension) are likely to boost the Knights side chasing its first win since round 10. The only Knights team in action last weekend was the NSW Cup side which had a convincing 48-14 win over Manly at No. 2 Sportsground. The NRL team’s bye meant
players such as Carlos Tuimavave, Sam Mataora, Danny Levi and Clint Newton featured in the match after being part of the first grade team in recent weeks. Jeremy Smith also took the opportunity to gain some match fitness against the Sea Eagles, coming off the bench in his return from his injury. The match was in the balance at halftime with the Knights holding a 16-10 but seven second-half tries saw the home side kick away. Nathan Ross scored three tries for the Knights, with Honeti Tuha and Kerrod Holland grabbing two each. matter, but for Eden, the process of writing and performing is somewhat of a cathartic process. “It was a long time coming - around two and a half years - and the songs do get quite personal but I find writing a very self-counselling thing,” she said. “When I perform them, I like to think of the songs as little boxes that I open up to release all those emotions and get them out there before putting them away again for the next show.” Eden, who famously shunned the limelight after her Voice win, added that the most

important thing she took away from her time on the reality show was to dance to the beat of her own drum. “Yeah, the most important thing I took away from that experience was the importance of staying in your own lane – kind of like when you’re driving, I guess,” she said. “It’s all about not being too concerned about following trends or trying to fit into people’s expectations. “Also, I learned that, if you want to have a decent crack, then you really need to keep your head down and arse up and concentrate on the work. Be a nice person always, but never take your eyes off the goal.” Aside from the album keeping her quite busy, Eden also recently partnered with OzHarvest Australia’s leading perishable food rescue charity - who have used her single Lonliness as the focal point of their forthcoming community awareness campaign. Eden, who has been very open about her background, life struggles and challenges, said that the partnership was a perfect fit. “They actually got in contact with me as they had heard a bit about my life and my background and thought it would be a good match and they were right,” she said. “ I first teamed up with them for their CEO cook-off earlier this year and when I saw firsthand the great work that they do, I wanted to do more, so we got together again for the film clip for my single Lonliness which turned out great. It’s a great charity that everyone should get behind.” Eden, who gave birth to her first child, Blayden last year, said she wanted to introduce her son to the wonders of the road as soon as possible. “After this run is over, I’ll be pretty keen to spend some much-needed time at home with the family and then next thing will be getting out on the road again in the summer,” she said. “I’m actually pretty keen to take the whole family on the road in a camper van or something like that – do a bit of a Partridge Family kind of thing.” Karise Eden - Wests Lambton - Wednesday, July 15 - Stephen Bisset

VIKA STILL HAS A HOLD ON US ika Bull, arguably one of the most powerhouse female vocalists that this country has ever produced, will be in town next week paying homage to one of the greatest singers in popular music history - Etta James. Hot on the heels of sold-out seasons at the Sydney Opera House
and in theatres across the country, Bull is taking the show back out on the road and she said Lizotte’s was almost purpose-built for a show such as this. “Newcastle has always been a great gig and Lizotte’s is just such a beautiful venue – great sound and a nice high stage – it’s always
a treat to play there,” she told Newcastle Weekly. “The show is really about telling Etta’s life story – and, boy did she have an interesting one to tell – from starting on the stage at 14 right through to her death at 74. All of the trials and tribulations and, of course those wonderful, wonderful songs.” James is widely recognized as bridging the gap between r&b, rock and roll and pop music. During her long and tumultuous career that saw her produce such classic standards as At Last, I’d Rather Go Blind, Something’s Got A Hold on Me, Tell Mama and Pushover. Her influence is palpable in artists like Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and Janis Joplin through to today’s artists like Joss Stone, Adele and Amy Winehouse. Bull said her passion for the powerhouse singer was first ignited as a teenager and has stayed with her ever since. “I got really into Etta when I was about 17,” she said. “I was really taken with her voice
and I began listening to it as much as I could. I loved all of that early R&B stuff, but Etta’s voice really resonated with me – she could basically sing anything in any genre and that was just amazing to me – it still is.” While she said it can be a struggle containing her emotions when belting out such an iconic torch song as At Last or the heart-rending I’d Rather Go Blind, Bull added that it is often the audiences reactions that can threaten to tip her over the edge. “What’s tough for me is looking out at the audience when you’re doing a song like I’d Rather Go Blind and seeing them with tears in their eyes - that always has an effect on me - it’s such a sad song - but they also cry in the happier love songs like At Last and I guess that’s a testament to the way Etta sang them. A night of great folk The Dungeon at Adamstown Uniting Church will play host to an evening of lilting folk when the Tradewinds folk club brings Sydney-based duo Cap in Hand to town this week. Featuring the talents of Nigel ‘Muddy’ Walters (also of the Wheeze and Suck Band) and David Spira, Cap in Hand plays a mix of traditional and contemporary pieces as well as a slew of their own material. The pair have played music together for several years now appearing at a number of folk festivals and as regular performers at the Hornsby Folk Club. With influences including Nic Jones, Martin Simpson, Simon Fox and Bill Mize their music ranges from traditional to contemporary. Dave plays exquisite finger style acoustic guitar in a range of open tunings
while Nigel sings, plays finger style guitar, mandolin and cello mandolin. He has many other strings to his musical bow as well, including guitar, Apalachian dulcimer, piano, mouth organ and spoons. hat started out as a bit of fun and a way to get a giggle out of family and friends has quickly turned into a consuming passion for Sydney-based brothers Theo and Nathan Saidden whose Superwog skits have become a YouTube phenomenon. Since first uploading their videos in 2008, they have had more than 70 million views and currently have more than 430,000 subscribers. “It’s just been crazy,” Theo Saidden told Newcastle Weekly. “We were expecting, like, 500 views or something, but to see videos clock up over 500,000 is just awesome.” Influenced by the likes of Chris Lilley, Paul Fenech and Sacha Baron Cohen, the boys created the channel superwog 1 to explore their passion for impersonation and character development. “We were always into impersonating friends and teachers so we started doing the videos for a bit of fun and we started getting requests to do more and then it evolved into skits about Aussies versus wogs and it just keeps growing.” Having taken their unique and over-the-top take on Anglo-wog relations out of cyberspace and onto the stage with a successful theatre run in

time out - gig guide MEET THE ARTIST: MICHELLE BRODIE When did you first know you wanted to be a professional artist? I remember it vividly; I left an office job in my early twenties and enrolled in the Art and Design Certificate at TAFE. Our orientation was in the sculpture studio and we were asked to draw something we had on us so I drew my midnight blue snakeskin wallet rather well it was noted and I remember saying to myself ‘this is it, this is what you’ve been looking for’ and feeling that sense of purpose in life. Please describe your work. For the last 15 months I have concentrated on painting with oil on board. The paintings are symbolic and show odd scenes often in nondescript places, often a couple or group of figures, sometimes near or sitting on a pile of rocks or in boats, sometimes just boats, sometimes just piles of rocks, sometimes a peanut appears on rocks and sometimes I encase a figure in a peanut shell. What inspires you? The symbols - water, rocks, rope, boats and the peanut. What has been your greatest achievement? Resilience and living with self-doubt. What would be your advice for budding artists?

FILM REVIEW: TED 2 f you go into Ted 2 expecting anything other than a lowbrow extravaganza of political incorrectness, chances are, you’ll leave disappointed and maybe a little offended. If, however, you are au fait with the Seth MacFarlane brand of take-no-prisoners satire, then you will find plenty to like here. After only 12 months of marriage to the wonderfully trashy Tami-Lynn, Ted (voiced by MacFarlane) has realised that married life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In a last-ditch effort to save the marriage, Ted and TamiLynn decide to have a baby and after he and his life-long thunder buddy John (Mark Wahlberg)

Rookie lawyer and John’s love interest Samantha (Amanda Seyfried) takes up his case and while the plot - that also includes an executive from Hasbro trying to kidnap Ted - is just a mere thread to hang a string of jokes on, there are plenty of belly-laughs to be had even if the premise may be wearing a bit thin. NO ONE WITH A BULLET
While the music world might consider a B-Side something lesser than its A-side counterpart, one little café in Charlestown is proving that, when it comes to coffee, nothing could be further from the truth. hen it comes to coffee culture in this region, hot-spots like Darby and Beaumont streets and, increasingly, the Newcastle CBD, consistently spring to mind. However, B-Side Espresso, an unassuming little café located in an office complex across form Charlestown Square, is definitely changing that perception. Having only been operating for 18 months, the café is already enjoying a fast-growing reputation for serving up full flavoured, robust and, more importantly, consistent coffee and an array of fresh and zesty fare. “We opened around 18 months ago – I’d just come home from Europe and set it up with a family friend, Nyrie Trotter - she was managing [Newcastle cafés] Good Brother and Suspension and she was with us for six months. She
brought a great deal of expertise with her which was fantastic in the beginning,” owner Jordan Bale said. “When we originally moved in, there was nothing here and there was about 350 staff upstairs with really nowhere to go for their coffee except inside the centre where you’ve got to deal with the crowds and everything, so I just wanted to offer an alternative to that.” Bale said that the coffee was sourced from a roaster in Melbourne, with B-Side being the only café in Newcastle using the brand. “The coffee is DC Roasters – they’re a pretty small outfit out of Melbourne – I’m good friends with one of the roasters down there and I was opening a place so I thought I’d give them a go and they do a really good coffee. They were
originally Ducale, an old Italian brand, and they’ve taken it over and completely changed it. I think there’s one other place outside of Sydney in NSW that uses DC, but we’re the only place in this area where you can get it.” There’s no denying that coffee has become a big part of the Novocastrian cultural zeitgeist in recent years and Bale said such obsessions constantly raise the quality bar for cafés like B-Side. “It really is a Novocastrian obsession,” he said. “I mean, it’s big in Sydney, but I think it’s even bigger here. I mean, only yesterday one of the staff members went to Surry Hills, got a coffee and said it was the worst coffee she’d ever had and Surry Hills is, like, the capital of hipsters. But I really think the bar has been raised in this region over

the last five years or so. People in this region really appreciate good coffee so we’ve always got to be on our toes.” While Bale said the main focus of B-Side was the coffee, they don’t skimp on quality when it comes to their menu as well which features an array of toasties, salads, and savoury and sweet muffins. “We do a lot of open toasties, like our avocado and goats cheese with cherry tomatoes is quite popular, and they all have homemade relishes – we try to make everything ourselves. t’s been a belief, held by Novocastrians for some time now, that Jeremiah Jones Boutique Fish and Chips (122 Hunter Street), serves up some of the freshest fish and most morish chips the region has to offer. Now, it seems that recognition is spreading a little further afield. In the eighteen months since the business was established, their reputation for providing
the freshest seafood possible and changing perceptions about the old ‘greasy spoon’ fish and chip chip shop. “Everything here is fresh – right down to the salt,” Sywak said. “We specialise in just a few fish - local whiting, gemfish and shovel-nose ray - it’s all sourced fresh every day from the co-op and, importantly, we change our oil every day. “It’s a little bit different to what people might be used to from their local fish and chip shop. Bright and tidy with staff wearing white coats – generally not what pops into your mind when thinking of a tattoo parlour. But owner John Sayas says that is exactly the impression he wants to convey to his customers. “We want people to see that everything in here is clean and professional. “We are fully licensed and want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable.” The clinical feel and attention to hygiene may, in part, be due to John’s background working in the nursing industry. But he says tattooing has long been his true passion, and now after 15 years of experience, five as a professional, in helping people with their body art needs, he was thrilled to have opened his own business. “I’ve spent a lot of time working for other people and now it is really exciting to have a
business of my own.” John says customers are more than welcome to bring in their own ideas or alternatively he and apprentice Ash can create a personal, unique design. “We can also add to or change any tattoos that people may already have.” The clinic was officially opened on June 29 by Lake Macquarie councillor Jason Pauling, with John saying he had been made to feel very welcome by other business owners in the Plaza, including his godfather and mentor Amenza Mendoza from Amenza Goldsmith & Jewellers. “I know some people may have thought that a shopping centre is not the right place for a tattoo clinic, but we have done everything to try and change some of the stigma associated with this industry,” he says. “So many of the other shop owners in here have been so friendly and supportive.” SAYAS ink Tattoo Clinic is open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday at Shop 15b Jewells Plaza Shopping Centre, Jewells. In this first instalment, playboy industrialist Tony Stark (Downey) escapes from kidnappers using an armoured suit and quickly uses its creation to fight crime, much to the disapproval of his company’s boss. Directed by Jon Favreau (Elf), this is fast-paced, entertaining and a lot of fun.

The real star of the show is Matthew McConaughey, who steals the thunder as the boys’ boss. Soderbergh teeters into melodrama territory, but that is part of the film’s charm.

The groundbreaking 3D technology used to create such a wondrous environment secured Oscars for visual effects and still stands as the highest grossing film of all time. The story follows paraplegic marine Jake Sully (Aussie Sam Worthington, above), who travels to a far-off moon to gather intelligence about the Na’vi species who live on Pandora. It’s simply out of this world.
