This week...

From the editor We almost came home with a traffic cone this week. From Aldi. Because you never know when you might need one. But we talked each other down, settling for the SMD LED extendable torch instead. For the car, we said, but it works a treat spotting cockroaches in the garage. I love Aldi. And I know how many of you totally get what a life-changing experience it can be. Because you’ve only got to say the word, and the devoted froth at the mouth about beaut bargains ($11 Havaianas, kids’ beds, marine spotlights) and all-time faves (the ice-cream, the dog food, the brioche burger buns). I read a story last week about why the German juggernaut sells weird things. It’s not accidental, or a gimmick. Yes, it brings novelty and breaks up the boredom. But it’s part of the Aldi DNA – harking back to a German population left impoverished after World War II – it encourages bargain hunting. Word spreads, and the free marketing is as important as the cashflow. It gets into the psyche. It has its drawbacks. Variety, some say, is lacking, and speed packing at the checkout can be stressful. We’ve solved the second with our purpose-built trolley bags (Google “shopping trolley bags”). We’re the talk of the aisles. As for variety, you might be surprised. Spreading the word he chose a familiar restaurant, a dish marked “gluten-free”, and checked with staff that the dish was in fact free of gluten. But two hours later, Cathy Lyons was upset but not surprised that her four-year-old Aimee was vomiting. “I rang the restaurant to ask if there could have been any chance of gluten, and they said Aimee’s calamari had been cooked in the same oil as some crab that had been rolled in selfraising flour,” Cathy said.

And that’s all it takes for someone with Coeliac disease to become unwell – exposure to a crumb of wheat, barley, rye, oats, or foods that contain their traces. “We’ve had repeated bad experiences like this, and I do get angry. People should be more aware. But then I think, well, at least if I’m talking about it, people will be more aware,” Cathy said. It’s the medical profession, too, that needs to be more aware, Cathy, a nurse and clinical

Women’s stars are shining bright Newcastle women have reached the halfway point in their campaign to make 10,000 stars for the international One Million Stars to End Violence project, which began in Melbourne 4

consultant to lawyers, said. Aimee and her twin sister Sarah were both diagnosed with Coeliac disease when they were 18 months old, but not without their mother’s persistence. They contracted a vomiting bug, but then seemed to be continually sick. “They really looked unwell,” Cathy said. “I was asking my GP for a referral to a paediatrician, but I think I was dismissed as just another anxious parent.” After seeing photos on the internet of a child with Coeliac disease, Cathy made her own appointment with a paediatric gastroenterologist. Sarah was diagnosed through a blood test, then a bowel biopsy, and Aimee, being an identical twin with the same DNA and the same symptoms, was diagnosed automatically. Preparing gluten-free food was no problem for the Adamstown Heights family, as the girls’ older brother William, now 9, had allergies to egg, wheat, nuts and potato that he grew out of. He also has the Coeliac gene, but their other brother Matthew, aged 6, does not. “We are not totally gluten-free at home, however,” Cathy said.

To keep up production, they hold free weave workshops every Thursday from 10.30am-12.30pm.

She’d like more restaurants to offer gluten-free options for children as well as adults; gluten-free food to be stored separately and cooked in separate oil; and staff to be better informed about Coeliac disease. “It only takes a minute to learn whether your syrup is glutenfree, and maybe write it on the container,” Cathy said. “I want the girls to be able to enjoy eating out, and for us not to have those worries.” Fortunately, the preschoolers’ favourite foods are fruit and rice crackers, both gluten-free, but they do enjoy a treat of hot chips. • March 13-20 is Coeliac Awareness Week during which Coeliac Australia hopes to increase diagnosis of the autoimmune disease that affects 1 in 80 men and 1 in 60 women. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, diarrhoea or constipation, nausea or vomiting, fatigue or rashes. Untreated, it can cause issues with fertility, osteoporosis and some cancers. - Alysson Watson

Steel Magnolias Journalist, author and mental health advocate Jessica Rowe, pictured, will be the guest speaker at the annual Steel Magnolia Awards on 29 July. The award recognises a special woman who has been through adversity yet still finds the courage and inspiration to give back to their community. It has been running for 11 years and was won last year by Moira McCabe (Berriman). The event raises funds for the work done by Lifeline Hunter Central Coast to save the lives of local people through its crisis support and suicide prevention services (Lifeline 13 11 14). Jessica Rowe, a presenter on Network 10 and author of Is this my Beautiful Life?, has not spoken in the Hunter before. “I’m really looking forward to meeting and hearing the stories of the inspirational Hunter women nominated for the award,” Ms Rowe said.

Amy is currently on the Civic Theatre stage in the iconic role of Eva Peron in the National Theatre Company’s production of the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Evita. “I would say that I get nervous before any performance, opening night or not,” Amy said. “I think that’s part of the fun of it, though. That extra rush of nerves before you go on. I think I’d be worried if I wasn’t nervous before a show.” No stranger to the stage, in both singer-songwriter and theatre guises, Amy said her Evita role, made popular by Elaine Page in the original West End production and by Madonna in the 1996 film, was her most challenging to date. “This is definitely the biggest role I’ve had to do,” she said. “I’m also on stage for most of the show and vocally, the role requires a lot of stamina. While I’ve been working as a singer-songwriter for years now, it’s challenging because I’ve always written to suit my own voice, whereas this is more about stepping outside of that comfort zone a little. It’s been an amazing experience.” For Amy, it was her equally talented father Mike who was her biggest musical influence. “My dad was definitely a massive influence on me getting into music.

He’s been a performer for years and is still going strong,” she said. “I started piano lessons when I was five or six but I was always very shy and never wanted to perform. But Dad just instilled a confidence in me and I ended up getting into a band in my early teens and I just kept going from there.” While she said that music would always be her first love, Amy has added quite a few feathers to her cap –mother, mental health advocate, musical director, writer and bandmate for the likes of Jon English and Tim Freedman. “I’m a mum now so that definitely takes up a lot of my time these days,” she laughed. “I’ve always been very passionate about mental health awareness and have been working for more than 10 years in mental health promotion, so that is something that will always be very dear to my heart. “All of the other pursuits do hold their own charms and I am passionate about all of them, but music will always be my first love.” Vee added that theatrical work informed her songwriting in a positive way. “At the end of the day it’s all about story telling and trying to find a connection with an audience,” she said. “Songwriting might not be about telling stories, explicitly, but songs do tell of experiences in a similar way and I think working in theatre definitely helps with expression in songwriting.” - Stephen Bisset

One of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service’s most successful fundraising events is turning 21. The Wests Cycle Classic, a premier event on the Hunter’s mountain bike calendar, will be held 16-20 March. Riders will embark on a 360km five-day ride that tours Bulahdelah, Gloucester and Dungog, through National Parks and scenic terrain. Service general manager Richard Jones said the ride was one of the organisation’s most valued and long-running events. Ride captain Bernard Corbett said riders last year donated more than $70,000 towards compliance training for Westpac pilots and crew. There is a weekend-only option to cater for all riders. Saying “yes” when I might have said “no” ’m still not quite over the shock of David Bowie’s death – a sudden and unhappy reminder of my own mortality. But, every day, I ponder a little on how Bowie left us on his own terms, his departure as planned as any of his musical adventures and lyrical artworks. I listen to his album Blackstar, released just two days prior to his death, and I don’t hear the maudlin funereal message that some have claimed the album is. I hear the thoughts and dreams of a man who has time to say goodbye and I actually find it quite comforting. My mother’s sudden and shocking death, eight years ago, is something I now see as her last great lesson to me: that I could cope. That I would be OK. That I am more resilient than I ever

thought I was. Change. God knows I’ve had a bit of it over the past 14 months including a few choice morsels from the “Holmes & Rahe Stress Scale” of Really Bad Stuff that happens to people. But here I am. And here you are. I’ve been incredibly busy since leaving the ABC. I’ve been very lucky and I’ve had lots of work over the past year or so.

It’s been a big year for me. A significant *cough* birthday. Youngest child has become a teenager. Lots of interesting professional challenges and the ongoing sagas of our daily lives with wins and losses, victories and defeats. An exciting and challenging new role with AP Eagers – the parent company of The Kloster Group. I have days when I’m the rooster and, the next,

I’ve worked really bloody hard to chase ideas and opportunities, to try things I haven’t done before, to say “yes” where I could have said “no”. When golf meets soccer t’s not golf and it’s not soccer, but a combination sport that is growing in popularity worldwide. Started in the Netherlands in 2009, and Australia in 2013, FootGolf is now being played at Beresfield golf course, one of only five accredited courses in NSW. It has taken off with such popularity that the club will host the NSW Open championships in May. Tracey Wong, who has run the Newcastle City Council-owned course with her golf pro husband Greg Spelling for the past year, said about 400 players had tried out the sport in the first month, and several school groups had signed up. “It has really broad appeal for golfers and for soccer players,” Tracey said. “It’d say 80% of our players have been young males, but as soccer is so popular with

women, I can see it being popular with girls too.” Normally an 11-hole golf course, Beresfield offers a 9-hole footgolf course, which players complete in just over an hour. “For time-poor people, it’s a really good way to get out and enjoy the course,” Tracey said. No gold, no glory as normal transmission resumes ans of Newcastle’s sporting flagships will be left with the familiar feeling that the more things change, the more they stay the same, after a weekend full of promise ended in a double dose of disappointment. The weekend ushered in a new era for Knights fans, with a new coach and seven club debutants for the NRL season opener away to the Gold Coast. Nobody was expecting miracles, but, as noted here last week, there was an expectation that the newlook Knights would rule a line in the turf between themselves and last season’s woeful wooden spoon campaign. A second-half capitulation after a decent first 40 minutes shattered that hope. Nathan Brown appears a straight shooter, so we’ll go with

the coach when he said, after the 30-18 loss, that there was “a lot of positives there”. “We’re going to go through a process,” he said. “We had a lot of debutants today and we’ll have more in the next seven or eight weeks but the good thing is we’re putting in kids who can have longterm futures for the club.” Fair enough, but what will concern fans is that the performance had all the hallmarks of recent seasons: poor discipline, handling errors, lapses in concentration, indecision and lack of cohesion in attack. So, it would appear some big calls are still to be made as the coach continues rebuilding. The good news is we’re ahead of Manly. And we aren’t last. That honour goes to the Roosters, who were thrashed by Souths, who host the Knights this weekend. The resurgent Jets, meanwhile, travelled to Perth, where a win would have put them above the Glory and in the box seat to overtake faltering Sydney for the last play-off spot. The 2-0 loss surely now means they will be spectators again, come finals time. The Jets have improved under Scott Miller, but the question is will he be able to build on that. The late revival has been sparked by the recent arrival of Morten Nordstrand coupled with off-season recruit Leonardo finally

NEWCASTLE GETS CRAFTY he amber fluid has always loomed large in Newcastle’s culture, but as with most things, our Novocastrian palate is becoming increasingly refined; a fact currently on clear display with Newcastle Craft Beer Week. Organiser Shannon Kearns told Newcastle Weekly the aim was to show how far the craft beer phenomenon has come. “It’s a celebration of beer in Newcastle – specifically the craft type and the venues that support it,” he said. “Within the last two years, Newcastle has really changed and now you have all these fantastic, special venues focused solely on craft beer and that’s trickled down and now even your average pubs have got craft beer. It’s a great time to get introduced to craft beer.” With events running until Sunday, there is still plenty on offer

to wet your whistle. “On Thursday night we’ve got two really cool events. The Blind Monk in Hamilton will team up with Delikacies Deli to match beers and cheeses and The Grain Store will be hosting a Pirate Life degustation dinner. Pirate Life was one of the most popular beers of 2015 so that should be a very cool event. “On Friday, Foghorn is doing a one-off beer event, we’ve got Six Strings coming in at The Landing Bar, The Clarendon is doing a Young Henrys tap takeover and, on Saturday, The Pourhouse in Maitland is doing Hunter Valley cheeses matched with beers and then we’re off to Warners at the Bay on Sunday, and Murray’s is launching a new beer there.” For Shawn Sherlock, the head brewer at Newcastle’s Foghorn Brewhouse, the big event will be the launch of Foghorn’s first

collaborative brew. “The big event for us is on the Friday and one I’m really excited about – our first beer dinner. It’s not a degustation but what we’re going to do is have some canapés to start with then we’ll bring out some big lamb shoulders and pork shoulders that have been slow cooked all day, with sides. From the beer point of view, a guy I worked with at my previous brewery, we got together for the first time for a collaboration brew. His name is [Ian, head brewer at Queensland’s Fortitude Brewing Company] Watson, my name is Sherlock so we called it Elementary Ale. “It’s a really exciting beer – a mesh of the IPA style and a Belgian Blonde Ale style. It’s 7.6 % ABV – quite a strong beer, really hop driven but with a classic Belgian profile.” While beer has long had an association with the more “ocker”

side of the spectrum, Shawn said the craft beer movement was changing that perception. “One of the great things about craft beer, in general, is the idea of ‘drink less, drink better’,” he said. “It’s not about buying three cartons for 90 bucks and spending the weekend writing yourself off – that’s the antithesis of what craft beer is all about. The whole model is to have a focus on flavour, aroma and quality and presenting an overall experience. With all the drama at the moment about licensing laws, it’s a good opportunity to showcase that you can have a responsible family focused night or afternoon time venue-based experience.” Newcastle Craft Beer Week will run until Sunday 13 March. Don’t worry, bee happy ecently, my son Simon took me on a road trip to visit friends on the South Coast who live on a property near the picturesque village of Berry. When we drove into the driveway, we could hear a loud humming noise before we alighted – the sound strange to our city ears. It was unbelievable, the sound of hundreds of bees! They had every flower on the perennial salvia covered in the pursuit of nectar and pollen. During our stay of three days, we were amazed at the hive of activity that was reflected in the produce in the orchard and vegetable garden. Sitting on the porch having breakfast, I particularly noticed that the bees were more interested in the salvia

than the roses planted in the same bed. There are more than 500 varieties of salvia – these flowering perennials continually bloom and shouldn’t be bypassed in city gardens. I’m continually asked why passionfruit and vegetables aren’t producing. My stay at Berry has reinforced my belief that the design of modern gardens featuring hardleafed structural plants won’t help the vegie patch being created in the backyard. Consider planting a citrus, lemon or lime near the vegetables, as the blossoms are sweet smelling, encouraging the bees to their nectar and pollen. Raspberry, blueberry and avocado also bear flowers the bees enjoy.

Lavenders of all varieties are bee attractors. They are an ideal shrub to plant around vegetable beds. Think potager garden and use oregano, marjoram, sage, thyme and sweet basil (which will need to be allowed to flower) between tomatoes. A potager garden consists of herbs, vegetables and flowers. Annuals such as Californian poppies, Iceland poppies and stock will ensure that the bees return. If your garden is spacious, or I can persuade you to dig out yuccas and cordylines, plant flowering natives such as banksia, wattles and grevilleas. Remember, bees need a fresh water source in your garden, particularly during the hot weather. A low bowl or saucer (not too deep or they’ll drown) placed near one of their favourite plants mentioned above will encourage bees to visit your garden.

Retro Mix brings the outside in Paint specialist Dulux predicts a return to the 1960s and ’70s this year, but with a fun, youthful and contemporary twist. One colour trend to look out for is the retro remix, in which acid brights such as orange, clash with faded, muddied colours such as reddish browns, olive greens, mustard and ochre. The gardening gurus as Yates say it’s easy to continue the theme into the balcony or garden, making spaces appear bigger, brighter and more modern. Yates horticulturalist Angie Thomas recommends a pansy “Joker Mix” of pink, yellow and warm browns massed in a sunny or partly shaded garden bed, or in a container complemented by a hanging basket of dusky pink sweet peas and alyssum. For extra drama add “Black Knight” pansies.

Calendula “Pacific Beauty” will give a dazzling winter display of yellow and orange, and, as an added bonus, the flowers are edible. For warm-coloured flora with a fragrance, try Nemesia “Carnival”. Other plants suited to the retro remix are: Summerina “Twilight”, a rudbeckia with earth brownishorange flowers; Oenothera “Twilight”, an evening primrose which has light pink flowers and green to plum foliage; and Salvia “Ember’s Wish” which produces bright coral blooms. Planting some of these flowers so you can see them from inside will enhance the integrated indoor/ outdoor effect of your colour scheme.

The Woodturners Of The Hunter club had a busy weekend at Newcastle Show, and they’ll be turning out again among 40 exhibitors for the travelling Timber and Working With Wood Show at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on 18-20 March. Timber and Working With Wood Show organiser Elizabeth Falloon said Newcastle had not had a timber show of this calibre in 10 years. Appealing to everyone from the home handyman and hobbyist, to the tradesman and fine furniture maker, the show will be a hands-on experience, Elizabeth said. “We encourage people to come and try the tools, learn how to use them, and then, if they like them, they can buy,” she said.

“The thing about the show is the smell and the buzz and the sawdust. It’s just fantastic.” Billed as the largest showcase of products and services for the woodworking and timber industries, the show will also include demonstrations from experts. “Theo Haralampou, the international woodworking expert, needs no introduction to the woodworking community and will join the Newcastle timber show,” Elizabeth said. “There’ll be beautiful hand tools, and fantastic slabs of timber.” Several school groups will take part in workshops during the show.
