This week...

Congratulations to all those involved in putting together the Hunter Region Youth Unemployment Symposium at Kurri Kurri TAFE later this month (see story on page 4). We’re at around 20 per cent unemployment for our youth in the Hunter (excluding Newcastle) with the numbers rising. It’s not an easy situation to rectify but promoting informed discussion on the issue is certainly a good start. Rest assured we will follow up on the outcome of the symposium and let you know what the multitude of participants come up with. We also have some delicious drinks for you this week in our Taste section, perfect for your dinner parties or a special occasion. And finally, my apologies to all of you who followed my Melbourne Cup tip, Who Shot Thebarman, who ran 11th. I’m sure by now you’ve read all about the back story surrounding the winning jockey Michelle Payne. United response to increasing youth unemployment

Hunter youth unemployment is high on the agenda.

overnment, industry partners and the community will come together at Kurri Kurri TAFE on November 24 for the Hunter Region Youth Unemployment Symposium. The symposium has been organised to engage a broad range of people with the skills, knowledge, experience and ability to provide critical input into developing immediate actions in the form of a strategic plan. It will include representatives from federal and state government agencies, local councils, learning and education institutions, youth service providers, job placement organisations, chambers of commerce, industry associations, businesses and community representatives. Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said it was critical for all stakeholders to work together to tackle youth unemployment across the Hunter.

“We need people with the right skills, experience and motivation to create practical strategies and take immediate action to put solutions in place,” Cr Pynsent said. “We, as a region, face the alarming statistic that more than one in five of our young people are out of work and unable to find a job.” Recent figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed 21 per cent of the region’s 15 to 24 year olds were out of work in August, a rise of 0.6 per cent on the previous month. It is envisaged the strategic plan from the symposium will be a vehicle for strong collaboration of resources and networks across the Hunter. Local students encouraged to embrace the ANZAC spirit Young people in the Hunter are being given the opportunity to visit historic ANZAC sites, in a program launched by Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott, and in partnership with ClubsNSW. The Premier’s Anzac Ambassadors Program allows Year 10 and 11 students to enter 4

a competition by writing a 1000word essay on ‘Why the Centenary of ANZAC is important for modern Australia?’ On the basis of those essays and a final interview, six students in NSW will be chosen to retrace the steps of WWI soldiers across Athens, Lemnos, Crete, Paris,

Ieper and the Somme in April next year. Mr Elliott said the program provided a pathway for students who wanted to go beyond the classroom in learning about the sacrifices our forefathers made on the battlefields of WWI. “Visiting these sacred Australian

historical sites and meeting key dignitaries along the way only reinforces the importance of this scholarship,” he said. “More importantly, when the students return home, the experiences and knowledge gained will see their peers learn about the ANZAC legend from a different perspective.” ClubsNSW CEO Anthony Ball said the experience would enrich the lives of the students participating, as well as their local communities, and he thanked the NSW Government for its support of the program. “These young people will gain a unique appreciation for how hard it would have been for the ANZACs, many of whom would have been fighting in horrific conditions on the Western Front as teenagers themselves.” Entry submissions can be made via email to anzacambassadors@ clubsnsw.com.au until Friday 18 December. enior staff from Hunterbased organisation Anglican Care have travelled to Alice Springs to present a report to Australia’s peak national body in the field of ageing on the success of their Life in Motion lifestyle program. The program, which has been offered throughout Anglican Care’s Hunter, Central Coast and Manning facilities for 18 months, uses Xbox Kinect games to motivate physical activity amongst residents, with functional improvement, notably in balance and upper limb movement reported. It differs from traditional physical activity programs used

in aged care, with a variety of movements from both a sitting and standing position. One of the Anglican Care’s speakers at the conference, lifestyle and wellbeing coordinator Jane Meldrum, said the program provided participants with stimulation and fun. “The residents who took part enjoyed the fact they were exercising without actually feeling like it,” Ms Meldrum said. “We have seen decreased sedentary behaviour amongst residents and participants really enjoy the social interaction it has afforded.” - Paul Monforte

Flood policy for Port Stephens community A new comprehensive Floodplain Risk Management Policy and Flood Hazard Maps have been unveiled for community feedback by Port Stephens Council. John Maretich, Council’s Assets Section Manager, said the new policy and maps would be an integral tool for future planning decisions in Port Stephens, and could also save households money on insurance premiums. “The new draft Policy ensures that Council meets its legislative requirements, while decisions relating to development of flood prone land are not unnecessarily restricted but pragmatically take into account the flood hazard,” he said. Discount registration fee for cats and dogs De-sexed cats or dogs purchased from local council pounds or eligible shelters are now entitled to a 50 per cent discount on the lifetime registration fee. RSPCA NSW CEO Steve Coleman is hoping the move will see a rise in adoption rates. “Halving the cost of registrations for adopted animals will see a number of benefits,” he said. “For one, it increases adoption incentives, which is always great news for animals in our shelters. he financial burden on Hunter cancer patients travelling long distances for treatment will be eased following the announcement of a partnership between Cancer Council NSW and AccorHotels.

Reduced rate rooms of up to 30 per cent will apply for all cancer patients who must travel to Sydney as part of their treatment and do not require on-site medical assistance. Rooms in 62 AccorHotels properties close to treatment facilities in greater Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and other locations across NSW that do not have relevant patient facilities. A longstanding campaign to secure a site for construction of the Blue Gum Hills Men’s Shed has proven successful with a development application approval granted for the corner of Canney and Bousfield streets, Wallsend. Music club Alive ‘n’ Kickin was formed as a way for the members, who are all aged over 60, to remain active as they recovered from their health issues. Alive ‘n’ Kickin’s Allan Baxter told Newcastle Weekly that the club operated much like a men’s shed. “We meet once a week at my place to unite playing music and also enjoy each other’s company,” Mr Baxter said. “Our music is a mixture of rock, blues and country from bands such as The Eagles and Creedance. ndustry super fund for the health and community services sector, HESTA, has welcomed Treasurer Scott Morrison’s recent focus on the gender superannuation gap, while also calling for reform that would benefit all women, not only a wealthy minority. Mr Morrison announced the Federal Government was considering raising the $30,000 cap on concessional super contributions for mothers returning to work. The measure aims to address the super gap he said women experience due to ‘disruptions’ in their working life. HESTA CEO Debby Blakey said the fund’s members were nurses, aged care workers and child carers, who earn modest wages. “They, along with many other working women, won’t benefit from these tax concessions, as they simply don’t earn enough to top up their super by tens of thousands of dollars a year,” Ms Blakey said. “The gap in super savings women experience is not due to

the choices they make – the main causes are the gender pay gap that sees women earning less than their male counterparts and unpaid time out of the workforce.” Speaking on Sydney radio station 2GB, Mr Morrison said people over the course of their working life can have their work patterns disrupted. “You've got a lot of people, whose life events have meant that they have had to move out of the workforce and that means when it comes time when they do go back into the workforce they are sort of behind the curve in terms of trying to build up their superannuation again,” he said. “People's working patterns are more flexible today. The system at the moment can be quite rigid.”

Tom Gleeson will join mate Peter Helliar for two nights of top-notch comedy.

A DOUBLE DOSE OF HILARITY

Hunter comedy fans are in for a treat when two of the biggest kids on the Oz comedy block - Tom Gleeson and Peter Helliar - hit the region for two nights of unabashed hilarity next week. ith the pair currently enjoying considerable success on the small screen - Gleeson as part of The Weekly with Charlie Pickering team on ABC and Helliar as co-host of The Project on Channel 10, the good mates an long time collaborators will be getting back to their first love - stand-up. “It’s great being out on the road with Pete – we actually do laugh all day long,” Gleeson told Newcastle Weekly. “It’s a very casual affair - I’ll be on for 45 minutes, Pete’ll do 45 and then we come together for a bit of a Q and A at the end which is often the funnest part of the show as things tend to get pretty loose by that stage.” Gleeson, who has been an integral part of Australia’s funny bone for some time now, on stage and on such shows as The Project, Good News Week and The Glass House, is currently enjoying a stellar run with his latest small screen outing (as a writer and cast member) The Weekly with Charlie Pickering which was recently picked up for a second season. “It is pretty good to see the show picked up again because it doesn’t really happen all that often in this country,” he said. “It’s pretty funny because the last time I was involved with a show full time that was renewed was [sketch comedy show] Skithouse and that

was over ten years ago. So, it’s kind of nice to see things come full circle. But, yeah, it’s great that we’re back next year because we’ve got so much ground that we can cover and I know Charlie and the rest of the crew feel the same way.” While he has worn various creative hats throughout his career - comedian, author, radio and television personality, Gleeson said the immediacy of stand-up is a pretty hard bug to shake. “You could probably draw a graph showing the amount of people watching you versus the amount of creative expression you have,” he said. “Like, on television, you might have a huge audience but you may only have five minutes and kind of have to watch what you say, but with stand-up you might be playing to 300 people but you can say whatever the hell you want. “Also, the immediacy is definitely appealing. If I think of a joke, I can go to a club, tell it, and then see if it works whereas if I wanted to write a script, it could be years before you get any feedback. hile the paring of auteur Steven Spielberg (with a style that almost recalls a Frank Capra ‘Americanness’) and writing team of Joel and Ethan Cohen (with all of their idiosyncratic narrative peccadillos) might be an odd coupling on face value, the result, in this slow burning spy thriller, is highly watchable. Coming more from the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy school of spy fare rather than any James Bond tomfoolery, Bridge of Spies is set in 1957 as Cold War tensions are starting to escalate. After Russian spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) is captured by the CIA, insurance lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks in a brooding Jimmy Stewart-esque turn) is appointed as the spy’s attorney. Fast forward a few years when a US pilot is shot down in Soviet air space and held captive, Donovan’s experience makes him

Verdict: This cloak and dagger flick places much more emphasis on the cloak. 3.5/5

It’s a place where I can be nice and quiet, I can think, I can be really messy and there are no mistakes there – everything is right, because it’s all my art. I can experiment there and find out new directions my art is going to go.”
