This week... From the editor Between holidays, I forget what a joy it is to read books. For hours, without interruption or guilt. A holiday can be rated by the number of books read. Christmas should be a 4. Easter was a 2, and I still left the lounge long enough to sing with my choir, visit family, shop, plant broccoli, entertain, and watch Call The Midwife. I used to read nightly. Then I bought a tablet. I still “read”, but only clickbait news reports and Facebook posts on tiny houses, gorgeous gardens, cute cats and popping pimples. But to lose yourself in a book is surely one of life’s great thrills. To have a family that allows this is a great convenience. I started with Carol, a lesbian love story written in 1952 by Patricia Highsmith, made into the movie starring Cate Blanchett, and went onto Brooklyn, by Colm Toibin, an Irish immigrant saga also in the 1950s and also now a movie. Both featured young women falling in love, coming of age, finding their way. Uplifting in their simplicity. It was a timely reminder that books are good for the soul, this weekend being the Newcastle Writers Festival. I’m looking forward to hearing Tim Flannery, and Kerry O'Brien. I might even dress my Rocky "Rocket Dog" in red for the parade (see page 6). Happy reading! - Alysson Watson

Sisters are doing it for each other hen you’re in a good place, you should help others, according to Melissa Histon. This philosophy drives the photographer, mother and businesswoman, and is at the core

of her online community, The Sista Code, and its new charity arm, Got Your Back Sista. “I’ve had some times in my life when things have not gone so well – breast cancer, a separation, having

to start again,” Melissa said. “But I remarried, I have a good life now, and I feel like I should help others.” It was when she returned from photographing the making of a documentary about sex trafficking in Nepal in 2014 that Melissa was inspired to forge a community of women. With friends Heidi Alexandra Pollard, Belinda Bow, Belinda Smith and Nadene Barretto, Melissa formed The Sista Code, an online community of positivity that now has 15,000 supporters and a core of 280 active members. While their goal has always been to help women in need, The Sista Code took it a step further this month with the registration of a charity arm, Got Your Back Sista. “Our vision is to see women and their children happy, thriving and living independently after escaping the trauma of domestic violence,” Melissa said. They aim to provide a pathway from refuge accommodation to

sustainable independent housing, living and employment. “It’s not just a hand-out, but a hand-up,” Melissa said. “We invite women who we have helped to come in and work with us, to upskill, and to give back.” This month they partnered with Raid My Wardrobe recycled fashion market, and registered clubs throughout the state, to collect items for women and children leaving refuges. “It’s very important to us that women don’t get all second-hand, that they get new items, and they get what they need,” Melissa said. “It’s empowering that women are involved in making these decisions.” Examples included new beds one woman chose for her children from a catalogue, and a department store voucher another used for new kitchen supplies and linen. Newcastle University has launched its first crowdfunding campaign for an indigenous science communication scholarship. It aims to raise $9000 by 14 April to fund a student to work with outreach program the Science and Engineering Challenge for one semester and study an online science communication course. Teen exercise reduces stroke risk Being physically active during adolescence could reduce the risk of stroke later in life, according to Hunter Medical Research Institute director Professor Michael Nilsson. He has been involved with two comprehensive international studies highlighting a strong link between long-term stroke risk and cardiovascular and mental fitness

in early adulthood. “Our first study showed a significant correlation between aerobic fitness and, to a lesser degree, muscle strength to stroke risk,” Professor Nilsson said. “I think it sends clear signals about the importance for kids to be physically active and should be considered in the school curriculum.”

We all feel the chill of home invasion tories of violence and home invasion always chill me, and the incident in Newcastle over the Easter weekend has again dredged up my own dark thoughts. At 22, I was living in a tiny unit above a small group of shops in Sydney. I’d been independent for years, had already lived in a few different cities and was working for an international record company, spending my days and nights mixing with some of the biggest names in the music industry. I think it was around 3am one morning that I woke to find someone standing at the end of my bed in that dim half-light in which you can only see shapes in shades of grey and you certainly can’t distinguish faces or identities. “You look comfortable in there”, said the grey figure with a male voice. “I might just get in there with you.”

To cut a long story short, I was out of bed in seconds and heading for the door – naked, but not caring. The grey figure grabbed my arm and I think of it now as a sort of dance that took place – a terrifying waltz with the grey figure from my bedroom reeking of alcohol, not resisting much.

Dogs join kids at festival parade of dogs dressed in red will launch the children’s program of the Newcastle Writers Festival on Friday 1 April outside Newcastle Region Library, 4.30-6pm. Author Libby Hathorn will read from her book A Soldier, A Dog and a Boy, illustrated by Phil Lesnie. Its release coincides with the centenary of the World War I Battle of the Somme, and children are invited to dress their dogs in red as a reminder of the poppies in the fields of the Somme. Newcastle’s Ronald McDonald House turns 25 this year, and so does Scone’s Ben McGrath, whose family has stayed there many times since he was diagnosed with a brain tumour at age two. “Ronald McDonald House has been our home whenever we needed it, for long stays and short stays, just too many to count,” said his mother Leanne. Critically ill in Scone Hospital with uncontrolled seizures, 2-yearold Ben was flown to John Hunter Hospital’s intensive care unit where he was diagnosed with the tumour. “My husband Mitch and I also had a 9-month-old baby, Jacob, to care for at the time. The last thing on our minds was accommodation, but in situations of great trauma, you aren’t thinking, other people do that for you.” The McGrath family, which grew to include daughters Lindsay and Lucy, are grateful they could stay in the House when Ben was in hospital for treatment.

“For me the main priority is to always keep my family together,” Leanne said. The family also holidayed in the Ronald McDonald House retreat at Forster. Patience is our cross to bear or some, Easter is all about the resurrection, and for others, it’s all about the eggs. But for the Jets and the Knights, there were no miracles, and neither got the chocolates. The Jets went into the Easter break with a minuscule mathematical chance of staying alive in the finals fight. That evaporated on Good Friday, when sixth-placed Melbourne Victory beat the Wanderers to put them 10 points clear of the Jets with three games left – a task even the Confident One, Jets coach Scott Miller, had to concede was beyond them. Then Perth, who the Jets could have overtaken when they met in round 22, won 2-1 at Hunter Stadium on Saturday to climb to fifth. There was, however, a potential saviour on hand in Jeff Von Schmauder, a Hawaiian

businessman who says he’s interested in buying the Jets. If that seems a bit of stretch, a brief perusal of his Facebook page shows him to be something of a yoga guru as well. “We will have local leadership, local business people, local community stakeholders involved in this team,” Von Schmauder told the media. He didn’t elaborate on what part he intended to play. Like other Easter stories, I’ll believe it when I see it. Oh ye of little faith… On Monday, the Knights were a chance at 12-all with the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium after an encouraging first half. But the second half witnessed the second coming of Warriors star Shaun Johnson, who burst into life after a slow start to the season to spearhead a 40-18 romp.

Coach Nathan Brown has asked fans to be patient as he continues to blood young players. But it’s a tough ask when you’re all set to hail the emergence of Brown’s Babes and they revert to playing like Brown’s Cows. Young men sought for health study Young men are being sought for a University of Newcastle study into improving eating habits, exercise and mental health. The HEYMAN (Harnessing E-health to enhance your mental health, activity and nutrition) program follows research involving 360 men on their motivators and barriers to healthy living. Study co-ordinator Lee Ashton said the main deterrent was lack of motivation because there was no program specific to men of that age. “We thought the guys might prefer an e-health approach overall – in fact when it came to physical activity and stress they mostly wanted face-to-face group and one-on-one sessions. As a result, we merged weekly sessions into the program, supported by mobile apps and a website,” Lee said. The website has cooking videos designed to improve fruit and vegetable consumption, with healthy pizzas, burritos and burgers. A fitness band will be provided to set activity goals and resistance training equipment is offered to avoid the burden of gym membership. Fifty participants aged 18 to 25 are sought for the 12-week program. Phone 4913 8034.

Newcastle athletics track upgrade Newcastle City Council has welcomed a grant by the NSW Government to upgrade the Newcastle Athletics Field in Newcastle West. The $800,000 grant will help resurface the facility’s running track and provide a dedicated outside lane for wheelchair athletes. The track upgrade follows a new amenities block provided by the council at the Smith Street sporting complex, together with an upgraded car park. 7

BARNES BRINGS THE HEAT TO THE HUNTER hen iconic Aussie rocker Jimmy Barnes hits the Hunter next month to play alongside Noiseworks, The Angels, Mark Seymour and the Badloves for the Red Hot Summer tour, it will be a case of catching up with some old mates with more than a healthy dose of good-natured rivalry. “It’s a really full-on line-up – I mean, you’ve got Noiseworks with Jon [Stevens], who is one of the best frontmen in the country, the Angels, who are one of the most ferocious bands in the world, Mark Seymour, who is just amazing, and the Badloves, who I just can’t wait to see again,” Jimmy said. “It is a bit like a reunion playing shows like this because we’ve all played together and been 16

on the road together in one way or another for years. But don’t get me wrong, it’s still very workmanlike and there is still a very healthy rivalry among all of us as to who will be the best band on the bill.” Jimmy, who is one of the few artists in Australia to have had a solo career that matched the success of his first musical foray, Cold Chisel, added that fans could expect an “all killer, no filler” set of solid gold Jimmy Barnes hits. “When you sit down to write a set for a show like this, it really does have to be about the hits. Fans at shows like this don’t always want to hear our latest stuff – which is okay by me because I still have a blast belting them out. I’d say that, these days, my set is kind of like a Mack truck. might be a little hard to start but, once you do, you just can’t stop the bastard,” he laughed. While Jimmy is often and disingenuously labelled a “screamer” when it comes to vocal style, anyone who has really listened to him either solo or trading harmonies with Chisel co-conspirator Ian Moss would know that this is one of the biggest fallacies in Australian popular music. His is a true soul voice, and capable of much more of a dynamic range than his detractors give him credit for “I’ve always been a soul singer,” he said. “For me it was people like Little Richard, Otis Reading and Wilson Pickett who really excited me early on and, then, when I got a little bit older, rock and roll singers like Paul Rodgers came into the picture and it became more of a mixture of the two but, for me, it was soul that really kicked things off.” To that end, Jimmy is revisiting his soul cycle, that gave us the highly successful albums Soul Deep, Soul Deeper and The Rhythm and the Blues the fourth and final album in the series, Soul Searchin’, due out this year, which he said would focus on some of the rarer cuts of the genre. “I had to look for these songs. They were like rare jewels hidden waiting to be discovered. And then once I found them, I had to search inside myself to see what I could bring to them. I wanted there to be a level of authenticity to the album as well so we went to Nashville and recorded in RCA studio B, which is a really famous studio that produced some amazing tracks and just sounds so bloody good.” Whether he’s performing smooth soul numbers or full-tilt pub rock and roll, even on an off night, no one could accuse Jimmy of not giving his all. However he insists that it’s a twoway street. “You’re only as good as the audience in front of you,” he said. “Playing live is a real partnership between the artist and the audience. ecently I wrote about bees, or rather the lack of them in some gardens. Vegetable gardens need certain plants to attract bees, and Australian natives are useful for this. Unfortunately, current garden designs tend to eliminate natives, as a minimalistic house design encourages the planting of hardleafed plants such as yuccas, cordyline and flaxes. Native plants can compliment modern architecture. The secret is multiple planting, and pruning. For example, Westringia fruiticosa (coastal rosemary) has

grey foliage and can be shaped into perfect balls. Contrast a group of westringia with a border of Lomandra Lime Tuff. Multiple planting used as a backdrop for screening is ideal. Use lilly pilly, as they grow quickly. My favourite is Cascade, which bears new pink growth, pink fluffy flowers and clusters of baby pink berries. In my first garden I was brave and planted a Eucalyptus nicholli in the front lawn to offer shade for the balcony. It was never a problem, as the regular watering of the lawn saved it doing a search for water and the magpies loved it

Planting larger natives such as eucalypts has lost favour, mainly because of their size and the resulting damage from coastal storms. The new grafted flowering gums, available in pink, orange and red flowers, have been cultivated as small specimen trees. These colourful gums look great underplanted with one of the low-growing acacias, Acacia Limelight or Mini-cog. My current home has restricted garden space, but I still have a row of grevilleas planted along my western boundary. I have quite a mixture of Honey Gem, Moonlight, Misty Pink and Sandra Gordon, all of which provide food for bees, a home for birds, and cut flowers for my home judy@newcastleweekly.com.au

The Australian Reptile Park, Somersby, will feature a new Deadly & Dangerous show series these school holidays. Visitors will learn about our most deadly creatures, including the Inland Taipan, the most venomous snake in the world, and its relatives the Eastern Brown Snake, Tiger Snake and Death Adder. See laboratory props, which are usually only visible behind the scenes when used for milking snakes as part of the venom program. Lizards will also play a part, with the largest venomous animal on earth, the Komodo Dragon, featured in the show series, along with the Gila Monster

Lizard. Spiders included are the Funnel-Web and the Redback. Children can also join the Kids to Keeper programs, which takes them behind the scenes, and families can book a private animal encounter. For information visit reptilepark.com.au.

MY DAUGHTER MIA LILLIAN Here we are together backstage at the Civic Theatre. Daniel Stoddart and I were co-hosts of the 2013 CONDAs, me as my alter ego “Denise Gold” Miss Newcastle Showgirl 1985 (2nd Runner Up). Mia joined us for the night as “Goldriana”, Denise’s conveniently mute assistant. I couldn’t be prouder of my kid if I tried. She is a beaut. She’s in Year 12 at HSPA and heads off to New York in April as part of her drama education. That school is amazing by the way. Yes, she has coloured lights in her wig.

My favourite things SPARKLES The handy ring holder is my daughter Mia’s 3-year-old hand that local sculptor Julie Squires cast in bronze – hands and feet. Adorable. The jewellery box is a treasured gift as is the little candle holder given to me by a singing student. The candlesticks were made by artist Sue Stewart. Grandma’s old Avon containers hold my costume jewellery. All that glitters to me IS gold. Inflatable red donkey, courtesy of Mia. I have a really soft spot for donkeys.

MAX Mia’s cat, Maximillian Sarajevo Tarantino. Black and white dude who was found seven years ago dumped in a bucket with three other kittens at Toronto. The vet nurse named them all after Bon Jovi – Max was originally “Richie”. Pretty cool, huh? My fave video is Mia and Max performing “oh well, I never, was there ever, a cat so clever as magical Mr Maxtoffles”.

MY NEW BUSINESS CARD! Getting a law degree, being admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court and earning a practising certificate is one thing (well three, actually) – getting a job is another. I am thrilled to be working at Catherine Henry Partners as a family and criminal law solicitor. The staff are just wonderful – hardworking but all with a delicious sense of humour. It’s a good fit for me.

THE D MAJORS Choir auspiced and supported by the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music. Every Saturday my heart gets filled by a bunch of chicks whose lives have been touched by cancer. They are incredible – not only for their singing but their joy, authenticity and strength. We’re recording our first original song at the moment, True Survivor. Come hear them 24 April 2pm at Newcastle Conservatorium when we fundraise for our Mother’s Day trip to Tamworth.

MY OASIS I bought this little place just before the Pasha Bulker storms. I built a bedsit studio for Mia that overlooks the world’s smallest yard but the neighbourhood is gorgeous and Max the cat loves pretending he’s a tiger in it. I have the world’s most adorable 8-year-old girls next door who bring me in “breakfast”. Hi Eleanor and Harper!
