This week...

From the editor I’ve dreamt of building a “tiny house” for a decade. It started with a book (The Very Small Home – Japanese ideas for living well in limited space) and escalated in this online age of “house porn”. I like the simplicity, the frugality, the pared back, clever design. I like the lack of “stuff”, and stuff to clean. At heart, I want to divest, declutter, downsize. But despite fantasising, researching, and drawing up plans for a trial run in our gazebo, my tiny house remains a dream. (A nightmare, say the children!) The reality of the here and now and stuff we need got in the way. Which is why I’m am delighted to tell you about Lily Ray and Felix Knapp, a young Swedish-Australian couple who are actually building a tiny house, on wheels, on the river at Gloucester (see page 4). They are as pragmatic as they are idealistic, and I’m looking forward to watching their build online (tinyriverhouse.com) and eventually, hopefully, visiting their tiny home. Another journey I’ll be watching is that of Juliana Bahr-Thompson, a triathlete, lifeguard and teacher who will paddle to Noosa next month to raise awareness of domestic violence – something with which she is intimately familiar. Merewether has a mermaid with a message, and a whole load of determination. uliana Bahr-Thompson has a motto that inspires: “Pain is temporary. It may last a

minute, an hour, a day or a year but, eventually, it will subside and something else will take its place. If

I quit, however, it lasts forever.” The 27-year-old Merewether lifeguard, teacher and triathlete knows a bit about pain, and endurance. Having ocean paddled solo 180km from Newcastle to Bondi last year, and endured months of operations and rehabilitation for major ankle injuries, “Jules” will hop on her board again in May to paddle more than 1000km to Noosa. But it’s not just physical pain that she has overcome. Juliana endured years of domestic violence – physical and emotional – and sexual assault. That is why she is raising money for White Ribbon Australia. “This paddle is my voice and symbol; it is my way of representing the struggle and personal battles I have overcome in my life,” she said. “People who go through any sort of violence, abuse or assault, seem to choose one of three things to cope: drugs, alcohol or suicide. I chose a fourth – sport. Since I was eight years old, that is the thing that has kept me going.”

Juliana said it took her 17 years to act on the abuse, and that it has caused fractures within her family. “At some point, you need to be selfish, to look out for yourself, you need to speak out. It is difficult to talk about, difficult to understand, but that is how domestic violence is.” Although Juliana is a determined woman, she does need support for the paddle to Noosa. “When I paddled to Bondi, I could carry all my supplies myself, but this time, I will need rest days, and I will need people to help me,” she said. She is hoping that support will come from the ranks of her lifeguard colleagues, “water people” up the coast, and violence survivors. Why the US election matters We don’t even live in the US, yet we are bombarded daily by its election campaign. Why should we care? For many reasons, according to US political expert Michael Ondaatje, who will speak at a Newcastle Institute forum at Souths Leagues Club on Wednesday 13 April on the US election campaign. “We should care because we are an ally of the United States,” Associate Professor Ondaatje said. “We should care because we are living in what some have called the ‘Asian Century’, where there are challenges as well as opportunities for Australia involving both the US and China. The next president will be crucial in this context. “We should care because the

United States remains the world’s superpower: US actions have the potential to (and often do) affect us all, for better or worse. You might have heard the saying ‘When the US sneezes the world often catches a cold’. And then there are issues of security, the economy, terrorism.” Associate Professor Ondaatje is a former University of Newcastle academic who is now National Head of Arts at the Australian Catholic University. He believes this US election could permanently fracture the Republican Party and alter the trajectory of American conservatism, with serious consequences for the US and the world.

He predicts Hillary Clinton will win, not because she is popular with voters – in fact she is quite polarising – but because demographics increasingly favour Democratic candidates and because her opponents (either Donald Trump or Ted Cruz) are more polarising than she is, even among moderate conservative voters. “A Hillary victory would be the best outcome for Australia,” Associate Professor Ondaatje said. “She was a solid Secretary of State who oversaw the US ‘pivot’ or ‘rebalance’ to Australia. She has a mature view of national security, values the US alliance system and the ‘special relationship’ with Australia. She would work well

Young, in love and off the grid he tiny house phenomenon sweeping the world has finally hit the Hunter, with Newcastle journalist Lily Ray preparing to build her tiny home at Gloucester. Lily, 23, married Swedish “I.T. guy” Felix Knapp in December 2014 in her parents Garden Suburb garden, and then again at his home in Gothenburg in July 2015, and it’s

set a pattern for the couple’s life. “For the next few years we plan to live mostly here, for say nine months of the year, and then go back to Sweden for three months for the summer there,” Lily said. “A tiny house is just right for us now because we will be living between countries and it means I don’t have to commit to a

full-time job,” she said. Felix can work wherever he has internet, and Lily will freelance while working on their tiny house and running their new website, tinyriverhouse.com. “There are great online tiny house communities, but there is not a lot available if you want to build in Australia, so that sort of information – heating, cooling, measurements and pricing, laws and regulations – is what I’m trying to provide in the hope it will inspire others in Australia,” Lily said. With the help of her journalist father Greg, who built a home on the Gloucester property where the tiny house will be parked, and her engineer grandfather, and sourcing mostly second-hand materials, Lily hopes to build the 7.5m by 2.4m house on wheels for $15,000 to $20,000. Part economic, part environmental, the tiny house will allow them to live between countries and off the grid, Lily said.

They will use rain water, solar power, and propane gas for cooking, and grow some of their own food. “Tiny houses are coming into the mainstream,” Lily said. “They are still a novelty, but as we’ve lived in campervans and tents, and with our parents, this is quite a step up for us. “It’s a bit like a caravan, only you don’t have to duck all the time, and it’s properly insulated.” Although the house will be small, it will not be without luxury. Lily has already sourced a second-hand double sink for what will be a full-sized kitchen, and they’ll have a “proper couch” that converts to a guest bed. They’ll have a loft bed, and loads of clever storage. The build deadline is August, as that is when Felix’s parents visit. And when they are in Sweden, it’s not a tiny house they’ll live in, but a tiny sailboat – a wedding present from their Swedish parents. - Alysson Watson

Drama builds resilience eaching children to “just be themselves” is at the centre of preschool drama programs run by counsellor Nicole Neave. “As a child and family counsellor, it became obvious to me over the years that our children are suffering from a great deal of anxiety, stress, lack of resilience and low self-esteem,” Nicole said. “When they come to me as

teenagers, I could always trace it back to a lack of true belief in themselves.” Nicole had found drama classes to be beneficial to school-aged children with anxiety, but there was nothing available for younger children, so she started her own. “I feel that this is the best age to start getting them comfortable being in their own skin, build up that resilience and to be able to

Garden grows community garden started by the Anglican Parish of TelarahRutherford is making great strides in providing fresh food for locals, and fostering a sense of community. Fiacre’s Feast, set up six months ago by parish priest Moira Evers and named for Saint Fiacre, the patron saint of gardeners, is open to all. “Everything here is there for you to pick,” Mother Moira said. “If there’s a pumpkin that’s ready to pick, come and pick it. Tomatoes, beans. We had some great watermelons growing out there and they all went, and I don’t care. “If it’s feeding a family or whoever, it’s all good.” The seeds of the project were sewn when Mother Moira was working in Melbourne, and nurtured in St Albans. “In St Albans, we had a little weedy patch at the front of the church and I weeded it and started planting vegetables, herbs, an olive tree. The idea was that anyone could just come and forage for food,” Mother Moira said. “When I came up here I wanted to do the same thing but on a larger scale, so it was lucky that I had the support of the parish.” 6

There are more plans afoot. “We will be looking to upgrade our kitchen to a semicommercial standard so we hope to run cooking classes, workshops on growing food from seed, worm farming, bicycle maintenance – whatever,” she said. “We also plan to plant more fruit and veg and a bush tucker garden, where we will work with local Indigenous students. “We’ve just entered into partnership with the Samaritans to help us run our emergency food relief program. “We help over 20 families from Telarah and Rutherford but Samaritans will be helping us with food vouchers and we will be setting this place up as an emergency food relief hub, where we can keep track of people; enter into a relationship with people and refer them to services.” Fiacre’s Feast is always on the lookout for volunteers, from people outside the parish as well. “It’s non-denominational and there are no strings attached,” Mother Moira said. “It’s just about being part of a community and doing something positive. It’s about plain, old-fashioned hospitality, generosity and being a good neighbour.” – Stephen Bisset

Standing ovation an ageist critic can only dream of ’m a firm believer in the adage that experiences are more important than things, and that investment in meaningful experiences that enrich your life in some way are a greater source of happiness than the latest gadget or “i-Thing”. Don’t get me wrong, gadgets and i-Things are very nice, but I suspect my sons’ memories of the time their mum lost her job and flew them to Paris to eat a jambon beurre baguette at the top of La Tour Eiffel will remain with them for their lifetimes. And besides, who doesn’t like a nice ham sandwich! I also do this with them with cultural experiences. Not to the point that they find it a pain in the neck, but certainly to the point of being more than I was shown as a child. Which was not very much at all. I want them to see people

Winning is not just about weathering the storm he defeats suffered by the Knights and Jets on the weekend bore the hallmarks of two teams who are still learning how to win. Both sides were away from home against heavily fancied opponents and emerged from periods when they were seriously under the pump to take unlikely leads, both were left short-handed before being overwhelmed, and both copped some rough justice from officials. Aided by a string of penalties early in the second half, Melbourne battered the Knights. But Nathan Brown’s young and inexperienced side stood firm, pressured their more seasoned opponents into errors, and stretched their lead to 14-6 in the 58th minute. Did relief at the eight-point margin translate into a drop in

intensity? Did the preceding backsto-the-wall effort and injuries take their toll? Whatever the case, Melbourne’s serial winners Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk can sense vulnerability and engineered an 18-14 comeback. The Jets couldn’t get within a bull’s roar of A-League leaders Brisbane early on but weathered the storm and took the lead in the 50th minute with a penalty from Leonardo. They should have doubled that when Ryan Kitto squandered a rare decent cross from Enver Alivodic. But Brisbane super sub Henrique came on, Jets skipper Nigel Boogaard was sent off, and Brisbane’s class got them home 2-1. The great Brisbane sides under Ange Postecoglou seemed to find another gear when they fell behind, and that spirit has been rekindled under John Aloisi.

Perhaps the lesson for the Knights and Jets is that winning is partly about knowing when a match is yours to lose. • So was it a penalty against Boogaard? By the letter of the law, yes. Ditto the red card. Soft, absolutely, and I’ve seen much worse waved away, but when you are red-lining it just to be competitive these decisions tend to go against you. Same with the Knights, who can’t get the rub of the green. Inexperience, ill-discipline and fatigue play a part, but refs can smell desperation, and they don’t like it. • As foreshadowed recently, the Jets have let misfiring striker Milos Trifunovic go. The Serb was their leading scorer with nine, including four penalties, but hasn’t put one in the onion bag since round 19.

hile she’s certainly no slouch in the music department herself, with a reputation as one of the leading ladies of Australian country music, when Melinda Schneider hits Cessnock this week, her catalogue will take a backseat to one of her biggest musical heroes – Doris Day. Having plumbed the depths of Day’s huge musical catalogue, that includes such timeless classics as Que Sera, Sera and Sentimental Journey with her Melinda Does Doris album in 2010 and, more recently, with her acclaimed theatrical production Doris and a seemingly endless run of club shows,

Schneider told Newcastle Weekly it would be quite the intimate affair. “The show is essentially a stripped-back version of the theatre show with just me and an awesome little jazz trio.” The daughter of Australia’s Queen of yodelling, Mary Schneider, Melinda has always been around music, but the music and films of Doris Day were one of her earliest touchstones and biggest influences. “It was definitely Calamity Jane for me,” Melinda explained. “I was around 10 years old when I first saw it on the telly and, as soon as I saw Doris, I was just transfixed.

“As you can imagine, being the daughter of a country singer, Calamity Jane really resonated with me – she was an all-singing, rootin’ tootin’ cowgirl. All I wanted to be was Doris Day.” While the iconic musical western first grabbed Melinda’s attention, it was the length and breadth of Day’s work that continue to inspire. “She was just so versatile – a great singer, a great dancer and an awesome actress,” she said. “Her movies are just so great and those songs are just so much fun to sing. There’s a lot of joy in those songs and it’s pretty hard for that not to rub off on you.” So, just how has interpreting the Doris Day songbook manifested itself in her own songwriting? “I guess, vocally, I’ve been opened up a lot and there is a definite desire to experiment with more and more influences, which is always an exciting prospect.” - Stephen Bisset

• It is time to remove tired summer annuals, flowers and vegetables, and prepare beds for new planting. Both winter and spring flowers, as well as vegies, including cabbages and cauliflowers, prefer an alkaline soil, which can be achieved by adding lime and digging in poultry manure. April is an ideal time to plant out pansies, primula and poppies, which are traditionally planted on Anzac Day. • Spring bulbs such as hyacinth and tulips should be in the fridge, tricking them into germination once planted out, which should be done by the end of April. Bulbs should be fertilised when planted, when they emerge, and when they finish flowering. The end of blooming and yellowing foliage demands protein, hence the feeding to encourage bulb development for next season. • Perennials such as clivia,

agapanthus, iris and violets can be divided now and replanted. A light dose of fertiliser will encourage new growth. Autumn crocus, blooming now, is a pretty perennial that bears masses of white and yellow flowers, and is ideal for borders. This little plant can also be divided after flowering finishes. • Lawns damaged by army grub should be lightly top-dressed and fertilised to stimulate growth before the colder weather arrives. • Houseplants that need repotting should be given attention by the end of April and definitely fertilised before their dormant period in winter, when it is wise to let them have a rest from growing. • Hedges such as box, murraya and golden duranta can be given a prune before winter. Channing bares some impressive skin in a moving performance as the titular Mike, who has aspirations in the furniture business, but for now is happy mentoring promising nightclub newcomer Adam (Alex Pettyfer). The real star of the show is Matthew McConaughey, as the boys’ over-the-top boss. Soderbergh teeters into melodrama territory, but that is part of the film’s charm.

The set-up takes a while to kick into gear, but the final hour is one of the most relentless, heart-stopping finales you’ll ever see.

Very different to the young, buff actors we’ve come to expect in these roles, Downey brought a sense of cheekiness wrapped up in his crime-fighting persona. In this first instalment, playboy industrialist Tony Stark (Downey, right) escapes from kidnappers using an armoured suit and quickly uses its creation to fight crime. Directed by Jon Favreau (Elf), this is fast-paced, entertaining and a lot of fun.
