Great Pride
Bill Nash Chief Development O cer
This year has been one of both deep loss and great pride in the life of Newberry College.
We mourned the passing of President Dr. Maurice “Morrie” Scherrens, whose steady leadership and unwavering belief in this community transformed our College. Morrie guided Newberry through a period of remarkable growth — in enrollment, facilities, and national reputation — always with a servant’s heart and a student-first vision. We remain profoundly grateful for his leadership and friendship. We also lost Ms. Bobbie Sides. We all felt it. She was a constant here, a listener, an encourager, and a friend.
Even in our sorrow, we have much to celebrate. This year, Newberry College received national recognition for academic excellence, student success, and a ordability. Our programs continue to expand in relevance and reach, and our students and faculty distinguish themselves in classrooms, on the field, and in service to others. Newberry College’s impact extends well beyond our campus.
The spirit of Newberry endures. With strong leadership, the college’s commitment to faith, service, and transformational education remains as strong as ever. On behalf of the Institutional Advancement team, thank you for the many contributions that have made an impact to our students. You make the dream possible for our students. Thank you for standing with us — for believing in our mission, our students, and the promise of what’s to come.
Bill Nash Chief Development O cer
Hail Scarlet and the Gray,
WHY I GIVE
Parkes Coggins ’05 grew up wanting to attend Newberry College and play basketball. For him, giving back is a way to say “thank you” to the place that has meant so much to him, and to build up the next generation of student-athletes.
Growing up in Newberry, Newberry College was always a familiar, beloved place for Coggins and his family; a er all, he is the son of the Voice of Newberry himself, Jimmie Coggins ’74. So when he graduated from Newberry High School, it was an easy decision for him to follow in his dad’s footsteps and a end Newberry College. He credits the small, family atmosphere for giving him the tools he needed to succeed as a student.
“I always did well in school but always felt like I had to work a li le bit harder than everybody else. At Newberry, I always felt like I had access to the teachers and all the help that I needed,” he says.
He tried out for the basketball team and got a spot as a walk-on player, playing on the team throughout his four years at Newberry. Playing under three di erent head coaches had its challenges, but the experience also gave him an opportunity to learn and develop from di erent leadership styles and perspectives.
Coggins graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, then went on to MUSC in Charleston to earn a Master in Health Administration. He’s served in leadership capacities at various health institutions throughout his career but has spent nearly seven years with Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, where he is now the Vice President of Heart/Vascular and Oncology Services. In his community, he also serves on the boards of the St. Luke's Free Medical Clinic, United Way of the Piedmont and The Charles Lea Center Foundation, demonstrating dedication to strengthening his community through health care and beyond.
Coggins is grateful for his time at Newberry and believes in the importance of investing in his hometown school. As a son, cementing and celebrating his father’s legacy with the College and the community holds special importance for him, as he, along with his mother, Doris, and sister, Jessica, contributed to the home and away radio booths in the new press box that will be built at Setzler Field.
“My dad’s called over 460 consecutive football games, and I want to ensure that his legacy lives on well a er we are all gone. And really, for our family, because my mom's been there too, right behind him,” he says.
As a former student-athlete, he is equally passionate about supporting intercollegiate athletics and building a strong foundation for future generations of student-athletes. He is a member of the Scarlet & Gray Athletics Club and serves on the Athletic Club Board of Advisors.
“Giving back to Newberry is my way of saying ‘thank you’ for not only giving me the education and friendships I made but also building a foundation for my career. I want Newberry College to be be er than it was when I was there, and ensure it has the resources necessary to succeed.”
“I just think it’s important that we remember where we came from, and remember that things aren’t ge ing any cheaper, and any way we can help with resources, whether it be through scholarships, the Athletic Club, through the endowment, or whatever it is, will benefit everybody at the school for generations to come.”
Lifetime Giving
Since 1856, Newberry College has been blessed by the generous financial support of alumni, friends of the College, churches and corporations. Their selfless giving is essential to the continued growth and success of Newberry College.

“At Newberry College, we strive to be a family and support each other in every way possible. The student-athletes here work hard on the field and in the classroom and it shows. It is an honor to help with these athletes achieve their goals.”
The Scarlet & Gray Athletic Club finished strong yet again this year with $350,058 raised. In addition, the Club ended the year with 295 members including 38 new members.

WHY I GIVE
Newberry College’s roots run deep for Marilyn Boone Kimbrell ’78. The daughter of two alumni, her parents instilled a strong spirit of generosity and pride in their alma mater.
Kimbrell’s parents, Gaines “G.O.” Boone ’48 and Elizabeth Rice Boone ’45, met and fell in love at Newberry College following World War II. They both felt strongly about giving back to their alma mater and creating greater opportunities for future generations of students.
“My mother and daddy, they just lived and breathed Newberry College. They fundraised for them for so many things. My daddy didn't have a lot of money, but he did raise a lot of money for the College. He started scholarships in honor of several well-loved Newberry individuals. I can't tell you who all they are, but I do know that some were started because of his efforts, and then the efforts of all the people who loved those people, they built on that,” she says.
The Boones passed on that love of Newberry College to their daughter, who majored in music and then went on to Furman University to earn a Master of Arts in Music Education. She spent 27 years as an elementary school music educator, and credits Newberry College for giving her a strong foundation to succeed.
“I think anybody who goes into teaching feels like they're overwhelmed when they get there to start with, because there's so much to do. But I felt like I had a good music background and all that worked out well, so I was as prepared as I could be to start my career.”
When her father retired, Kimbrell and her brother, Andy Boone ’75, wanted a way to honor their parents and
demonstrate their family’s love for their alma mater. They decided to set up a scholarship fund in their parents’ names as a retirement gift. Friends and family attending their father’s retirement party donated to the scholarship fund instead of giving gifts.
“For holidays and birthdays, my parents received Christmas presents, but we always donated to help build their scholarship fund, and Mother and Daddy did, too! That’s how we used the seed money to get us started, and then we just continued to build on it,” she says.
The G.O. and Betty Boone Alumni Legacy Scholarship Fund has not only been a perfect way to honor the Boones’ legacy; it’s a way to show appreciation for a place that has meant so much to Kimbrell and her family and to make the cost of education more affordable for the scholarship recipients.
“Education is extremely expensive, and any money students can receive to help offset the cost is wonderful, because you don't want to come out of college with a large debt that you'll never pay off. So, I feel it's very important that we have scholarships and things like that to offer to the students.
My parents were very generous. They instilled in me that it's important to give back, and I like to try to do that.”

Outright gifts can be made via check or credit card. For your convenience, you can give online at Newberry College’s secure giving site, www.newberry.edu/giving, or you can make a credit card gift over the phone by calling 803.321.5363. Mail your gift to the Office of Institutional Advancement, where all charitable contributions to the College are processed.
GIFT OF STOCKS, BONDS OR OTHER SECURITIES
803.321.5694
Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds or other securities allow you to make a substantial gift to Newberry College at minimal cost. You will receive a tax deduction based on the value of the security on the date of the gift. With long-term appreciated securities (those held longer than 12 months), you will receive a charitable income tax deduction for the full fair-market value of your gift and avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation. Once given to the College, we will sell for the benefits.
MATCHING GIFTS
803.321.5363
Make your gift go even further! Many companies participate in gift matching programs. Some companies will even match gifts made by retirees and spouses of employees. You can double or even triple your gift to Newberry College if your company participates in a matching gift program. To see if your company has a gift matching program, please contact your human resources department.
ESTATE AND OTHER PLANNED GIFTS
803.321.5694
By including Newberry College in your will or making other planned gifts, you can provide for yourself and your loved ones, plan wisely for your future, and make
a meaningful gift to Newberry. Planned gifts enable you to preserve your assets during your lifetime and leave a valuable legacy at Newberry. Donors who make estate and other planned gifts are recognized as members of The Heritage Society, the College’s planned giving society.
GIFTS OF REAL ESTATE
803.321.5617
Gifts of real estate are an excellent way to make a difference in the lives of Newberry College students and lower your tax liability at the same time. Gifts of property or a percentage of property may help you avoid paying capital gains tax, lower your current income tax and reduce your future federal estate taxes. Real estate gifts may increase your income if they are structured through a life income gift. You may also deed property, including vacation homes, to Newberry while retaining the lifetime right to occupy the property. Gifts of real estate must meet certain criteria and be approved by Newberry College’s Board of Trustees.
INSURANCE
803.321.5694
A new or old insurance policy may be an appropriate way to make a gift to Newberry College for future endowment priorities. Gifts of insurance will not be accepted for capital or current programming needs; only permanent life insurance policies, i.e., whole life or universal life, are accepted as gifts. You can fund a new policy naming Newberry College as beneficiary, or you can name Newberry College as beneficiary of an existing policy. For each policy, provisions must be made to cover future premium payments. If you transfer ownership of the policy to Newberry College, all future premium payments are tax-deductible. Newberry College will only undertake the responsibility of making premium payments if the donor makes gifts to the College equal to the payments. If such gifts cease, the College will convert the policy to its cash value.
As with any financial decision, you should consult your CPA, a orney and other financial advisors.
