Well, we are almost halfway through January and so far the weather Gods have been kind to us. We have several exciting things happening in February, so let’s hope the good luck continues!
Friday, February 13th is going to be a packed day – we will be opening our doors to show off the Center for an Open House from 9am-4pm. This is a great way for people to visit and see all that NSC has to offer! We will be offering tours, there will be prizes, and anyone 50 or older is welcome to try the pool, the fitness center and the group exercises. As an added bonus, Tiffany will be preparing seafood lasagna as a special lunch & DJ Bradly will be playing tunes to celebrate love at our Valentine’s Social that day!
February is also Empty Bowls month. Empty Bowls is a true community event – artists donate amazing handmade pottery, local restaurants contribute delicious soups and so many community members come together on a Sunday afternoon to raise money for the Newark Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels program. When you combine the cost of food, packaging, materials, and staff, each meal delivered to homebound clients costs approximately $9. Meals on Wheels clients are asked to make a donation each month based on the number of meals they received. Client donations generally range from $1 - $5/meal, however some clients cannot afford to contribute at all. No one is turned away from Meals on Wheels, this critical service is never denied to someone based on their ability to pay, which makes the success of Empty Bowls so important. Please consider joining us for an afternoon of soup and community while supporting a good cause at the same time.
See you at the Center,
Gift Shoppe

Thank you all for your support and NEW Consignment Day hours 9:30-11:30

COMMUNITY NEWS
SHARE YOUR VOICE TO HELP SHAPE NEWARK’S FUTURE
Saturday, February 21st
10:00am – 11:30am
The City of Newark is updating its Comprehensive Development Plan (often called a Comprehensive Plan or Comp Plan). This long-range, community-driven policy document helps guide future decisions about housing, transportation, economic development, land use, environmental sustainability, and more.
A Comprehensive Plan is more than a technical document—it reflects the shared values, priorities, and vision of the Newark Community. That’s why public input is such a critical part of the process. Your ideas, experiences, and perspectives help shape the policies that will guide Newark’s growth over the next decade and beyond.
Public comment will be available. Residents may attend in-person or virtually. Meeting access: https://newarkde.gov/ publicmeetings

Jada's Journal
by Jada Hall, NSC Fitness Center Manager
Staying active is one of the most important thing to support overall health, mobility, and independence. The good news is that exercise doesn’t have to be intense or complicated to be effective. Gentle, low-impact movements done consistently can improve balance, strength, flexibility, and even mood. Small amounts of daily movement can also help reduce stiffness, support heart health, and lower the risk of falls.
Easy exercises such as chair marches, seated leg lifts, and gentle arm raises are great places to start. These movements can be done while sitting or holding onto a sturdy chair for support. Simple balance exercises like standing on one foot while holding a counter can help build stability, while light stretching keeps muscles flexible and joints comfortable. Even short walks, whether indoors or outside, count as valuable physical activity.
The most important part of exercise is listening to your body and moving at your own pace. Start slow, take breaks when needed, and focus on consistency rather than intensity. By incorporating simple exercises into daily routines, older adults can stay active, confident, and strong one small movement at a time.
