Neuchâtel Junior College 2025 Gratitude Report
After two terms and eight years as Head of School of Neuchâtel Junior College, I have learned many lessons. One that will stay with me always is how generous our alumni and supporter community is when given the chance to help future students realize the dream of attending NJC.
Reciprocity is a defining feature of a community. This is not a quid-pro-quo form of assistance, where we’re expecting something in return. It is simply an act from the heart from people who care for NJC and who say, “I can help”. The 2025 NJC Gratitude Report is one way in which we wish to say thank you. We have all been fortunate to feel the impact of NJC in our lives through the countless experiences it has provided us. It is in this spirit that you continue to give back to future generations of students, and I consider myself blessed to have met and come to know so many of you over the years.
As we celebrate the Class of 2025, we honour a group of students who embody the character, courage, and curiosity that define NJC. They have directly benefited from your philanthropic support and will carry the impact of your generosity with them long after they leave our campus. On behalf of a grateful Head of School, thank you for making their experience possible. I hope to see you soon. I truly look forward to it.
And long live Neuchâtel Junior College.
Sincerely,
Andrew Keleher Head of School

Mateo ’25
“I can confidently say that I know what it means to “ Step Outside ”. It’s far more than travel, it’s transformation. It’s choosing courage over comfort — showing up to a morning hike 4 hours away over a night at Faucon — and seeking understanding over assumptions. NJC didn’t just show me the world, it showed me my place in it. And I can confidently say that “Step Outside” is far more than just two words to me, it’s a way of life, and it’s one I’ll carry with me.”

On behalf of our Governing Bodies for Neuchâtel Junior College, we express our deep gratitude for your support of our amazing school. We hope you enjoy reading about the incredible generousity of our donors and the school initiatives and achievements of our students and alumni.
Philanthropy plays a vital role in sustaining the distinctive experience that defines Neuchâtel Junior College, ensuring that current and future students benefit from exceptional opportunities both inside and beyond the classroom.
The commitment of our alumni, families, and friends reflects a shared belief in the transformative power of an NJC year. Your support affirms the value of our unique experiential learning mission, empowers us to continually improve the student experience, and inspires confidence in our future.
In the school’s 70th year, we celebrate the journey of students who were willing to ‘step outside’ their home environments, learn about themselves, and engage with new friends and the world around them. We also celebrate the dedication and many contributions of our supporters, alumni, parents, volunteers, teachers, and staff. Please keep spreading the word to new students and families who would benefit from this unique learning journey.
We are grateful for your partnership, your support, and your voices as we continue to steward Neuchâtel Junior College to deliver exceptional education for the future.

The NJC journey is more than just an academic path; it is a pivotal chapter that shapes a student’s identity and future. Thanks to donors supporting tuition bursaries, these outstanding individuals were able to realize their dream of a year at NJC. Some of our 2025 bursary recipients share, in their own words, how your support transformed their lives.
“The ten months that I’ve spent at Neuchâtel Junior College have not only served to enhance my world knowledge and educational prowess, but have also transformed who I am as a person. Without the assistance of the generous donors this year, all the memories that have come with it would not have been possible. I am immensely grateful.”

“The scholarship I received from NJC, made possible by donors like you, made this a reality for me. Without it, I would not have had the opportunity to experience a semester that has allowed me to grow as a person and make meaningful, lasting connections. I am forever grateful for this experience and for the support that has made it possible.”
“My year at NJC has changed the entire trajectory of my life. I have a newfound confidence in my identity and am positive that NJC has moulded me into the person I am. This new confidence has pushed me to not only apply to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, a direct-entry medical school in Dublin, but to have the self-assurance to accept the offer and know that I am fully capable of pursuing this dream. Thank you for your generosity and support, ensuring students such as myself have the opportunity to attend NJC.”

“Even though you do not know me, you believed in my ability to step outside and become more than I would have ever imagined. My life is forever changed purely because of you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing I was worth the cost. I will do everything in my power to succeed and make your donation go as far as possible.”

“Without your generous support, attending NJC would not have been possible for me. Every year, there are young students out there who dream of an experience like the ones created at NJC, but it is far out of reach for them. This year, you have made it possible for one of those students.”

Travel is the heartbeat of the Neuchâtel Junior College experience, where the world becomes the classroom and history comes to life. By supporting NJC travel bursaries, you ensure that every student has the opportunity to embark on these experiential journeys, regardless of financial barriers.
$21,555
Donated to travel bursaries, ensuring that every NJC student can take classroom learning into the world. Your generosity empowers our students to develop the independence, cultural insight, and global perspective that define an NJC graduate.

“Having the opportunity to live in Switzerland independently is a wonderful experience, but having the chance to live, learn, laugh, and travel alongside my peers has made my experience truly unforgettable. Not only have I learned more about myself and the world around me but I’ve learned more about people, relationships, and community.”

“I had the opportunity to travel to Morocco over Christmas break, which was a very transformative experience. On Christmas day, we all shared a long dinner of couscous and tagine, where we became family for the holiday. I will cherish this memory for the rest of my life, as it reminds me that connection, warmth, and joy can be found in the most remote places, as long as you are well surrounded. Thank you infinitely for enabling me to become the person I am today.”

“I would like to thank the supporters of NJC who allowed me to go on the Florence trip this year. Florence stands out as another big highlight of the year. It is a beautiful city with insanely detailed infrastructure. I enjoyed walking through the leather markets and seeing all the different monuments, specifically the statue of David, and exploring the Accademia Gallery. This has been the best year of my life.”

2025 has been defined by a remarkable collection of milestones, from the professional achievements of our alumni to the inspiring growth of our current students.
These stories of transformation and generosity reflect the heart of our mission and the collective impact of those who ensure NJC continues to march ever forward.
$100,000
Donated to support tuition bursaries, travel bursaries and campus comforts.
The Grad Class Gift is a hallmark of the NJC experience. It represents our parent community coming together to ensure that the transformative journey their children experienced continues for those who follow.
This tradition is built on a foundation of incredible generosity. Over the years, the Grad Class Gift has become a vital force for NJC. The Class of 2025 came together and raised $100,000 to support tuition bursaries, travel bursaries, and some campus comforts to help the NJC campus feel more like home.
Thank you to our parent co-chairs, Jen and Tom Cumming, as well as our committee members, Diana Bristow and Sherry Bonaldo. Along with all who donated, they have played a crucial role in enriching the experiences for our students and our community.

Ally Ozikizler ’19 remembers exactly what it feels like to “Step Outside” into the life-changing atmosphere at Neuchâtel Junior College. Today, she is giving back to that same community by serving as the creative force behind NJC’s digital presence, using her professional talents to share the school’s unique story with the world.
Ally’s time as a student was defined by a close-knit community and a passion for exploration. Whether she was acting as the designated travel coordinator for friends on trips to Prague and Mallorca or studying history firsthand in Greece and Italy, she embraced every moment of the journey.
One of her most cherished memories remains the Zermatt Family Ski Trip, where she watched her new best friends’ parents become friends themselves. “There was something incredibly special about it,” she recalls. “It was one of those moments that reminds you how grateful you are for the experience and the lifelong friendships it created”. This past September, Ally returned to Neuchâtel for the first time since her graduation. Visiting during the vibrant Fête des Vendanges, she reunited with faculty and her former Pension Madame. The trip was a powerful reminder of the place that shaped her. “Being back made me feel 18 again—reliving moments, friendships, and a place that shaped such an important chapter of my life.”
Now a professional in the digital landscape, Ally recognized a unique opportunity to support NJC’s future. Her firsthand familiarity with the campus and culture allowed her to position the school authentically to prospective students and their families; she helps audiences truly experience the magic of NJC.
For Ally, this work is a rewarding way to ensure the school’s legacy continues. “I hope my support demonstrates the value of giving back to a community that had a lasting impact on my own experience,” she says. “My goal is to help future students discover and benefit from the unique and immersive NJC program.”

Inspired by their own experiences and to celebrate their 50th anniversary, the Class of 1975 sought to make a lasting impact on future generations of NJC students. Their vision materialized in the Dare to Dream, Dare to Lead (D2D D2L) grant, a bold initiative designed to empower students to become innovative leaders and active community members.
In 2025, this grant was awarded for the first time to a group of students who described their experience as rewarding and transformative.
Thanks to the support of the Class of 1975, the group of students had the opportunity to bring a dream project to life. Over the course of the year, they organized and performed two shows—one each semester—for students, staff, parents, teachers and host families. They also raised money for MusiCounts, a Canadian charity working to build a thriving culture of music education across Canada that prioritizes inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation.
In their words: “Every rehearsal reminded us why putting these shows together mattered. Music brought us joy; it built and strengthened the bonds of friendship. We never expected to be part of a band at NJC, and it became one of the highlights of our year. Sharing music with the NJC community and seeing how it brought people together during both the coffee house performance and the final concert meant a great deal to us.”
This project was more meaningful than the students expected it to be. It helped them grow as individuals and believe in themselves and each other. “We hope it encourages future students to try something new and see where it takes them. If it does, then everything we put into it was worth it.” Ultimately, they fully embraced NJC’s motto to “Step Outside” by pushing beyond their comfort zones, creating something meaningful as a group, and most importantly, building friendships that will last a lifetime.

For the Class of ’96, the NJC experience wasn’t just about the credits earned; it was a thousand moments stitched together—wandering the streets of Neuchâtel, missing trains, and having long conversations that drifted from the serious to the ridiculous. At the heart of those memories was Care (Carolyn) Davidson.
Care was a true free spirit who brought a sense of adventure and an easy trust to every group she was in. Her classmates remember her as “the sunshine,” someone with a signature sparkly smile and a gift for making everyone feel genuinely included. Whether she was popping her head out of a sunroof to sing at the top of her lungs or cooking a traditional dinner over a fire in the Tunisian desert, Care turned ordinary moments into the stories that her friends still laugh about decades later. She cheered people on, judged no one, and made it safe for everyone to simply be themselves.
When the class lost Care, the grief was devastating, but it sparked a powerful collective mission to ensure her light didn’t dim. Led by Hafiz Ali and Jenny Aaron, the class wanted to honour her in a way that felt “real”— something that reflected the independence and shared discovery that Care loved most.
The response was a beautiful display of community. In just a few weeks, 43 classmates, friends, and family members rallied together to raise $50,000, fully endowing the Care (Carolyn) Davidson ’95/’96 Memorial Bursary. As a fully endowed travel bursary, this gift ensures her legacy is active at NJC forever.
Starting this fall, the interest earned will be available to students who need support to say “yes” to the defining adventures of the NJC year — the trips, the shared discoveries, and the unexpected moments that build lifelong confidence.
By ensuring funds are available for travel bursaries, the Class of 1996 is making sure that future students can experience the same sense of possibility and joy that Care brought to every life she touched. “More than anything, I hope it helps future students build the same friendships, confidence, and willingness to take risks that shaped all of us ,” says Hafiz. “If this bursary helps even one student feel more connected, more supported, and able to fully live the NJC experience, then it will have done exactly what Care would have wanted.”

“Care immediately introduced herself to me that first week in Zermatt with her signature sparkly and infectious smile. Care was a friend that found a way to make a meaningful and lasting connection with each and every one of us.”
“Care was a friend that found a way to make a meaningful and lasting connection with each and every one of us.”
“She had a gift for bringing people together and making them happy. She was an incredible friend, and I miss her every day. The world is certainly a little dimmer without her.”
“With her sparkling smile and warm brown eyes, being with Care was like being in the sunshine. She was a loyal and devoted friend with the kindest heart.”

For Bruce Mitchell ’64, Neuchâtel Junior College was never just a school; it was the place where the world first became wide. It was the setting for a pivotal chapter that ignited a lifelong sense of purpose, confidence, and adventure. As both an alumnus and a proud NJC parent, Bruce understands that the “Step Outside” philosophy does more than educate—it transforms who a person is at their core.
Deeply moved by the memory of his own journey, he and his family are now reaching back to open that same door for others.
For many of today’s brightest young minds, the dream of Neuchâtel Junior College is slipping out of reach. Rising global costs and financial barriers have meant that some of the most deserving students—those with the most to give the world—never get the chance to step foot on our campus. Today, the need is greater than ever, with one in six students relying on the kindness of others to make their NJC year a reality.
To meet this challenge, the Bruce H. Mitchell Foundation has generously committed $100,000 to bolster NJC’s tuition bursary program. This leadership gift establishes the Mitchell Family Scholarship, which will provide a lifechanging award to a needs-based student.
By choosing to invest in these students, the Mitchell family is breathing life into a new legacy. Their generosity serves as a powerful reminder to our entire community: when we support a student, we aren’t just funding a year abroad; we are gifting them the world.
At Neuchâtel Junior College, our mission to transform students into global citizens is fueled by a dedicated network of leaders, volunteers, and visionaries. The NJC Community Awards allow us to recognize those exceptional individuals who embody the school’s core values of leadership, service, and a lifelong commitment to excellence. This year, we are honoured to celebrate three individuals whose stories serve as a testament to the power of the NJC experience and the enduring bond that connects our community across generations.
Alicia chose NJC to step outside her comfort zone and discover her passions. That year instilled a lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship and a humbling awareness of global responsibility. After NJC, Alicia studied Environmental Chemistry at Queen’s University and earned a Master’s in Sustainability at Lund University, Sweden, where she co-launched Circle Center, a non-profit combating overconsumption.

Her dedication to local impact led her to become one of the youngest board directors for HUB Cycling, where she influenced vital changes to the BC Motor Vehicle Act to protect vulnerable road users. Currently a sustainability specialist at Prism Engineering, Alicia views climate action as a profound duty.
Upon receiving this award, she reflects: “I do what I do because I love nature... it feels nice to be recognized for my dedication, which motivates me just that bit more.”
A dedicated member of the Canadian Advisory Committee (CAC), Sarah has provided transformative leadership as Chair of the Advancement & Alumni Committee for the past seven years.

Under her strategic guidance, NJC’s philanthropy has reached new heights, securing the school’s future through successful fundraising and modernized advancement efforts. Beyond philanthropy, Sarah has been a champion for our alumni, revitalizing programming to foster deeper connections and a vibrant global community. Her commitment to mentorship— recently highlighted by her role as Executive Director for Girls Empowered Mentorship—perfectly reflects the values she has instilled at NJC. “It has been a very rewarding experience to contribute to the school and the CAC over the last seven years, and I hope the award inspires others to contribute too.”
A world-renowned infectious disease specialist, Dr. McGeer has been a guiding force in global public health for decades. Her courageous leadership was famously evident during the Toronto SARS outbreak, and more recently, her research on SARS-CoV-2 was pivotal in shaping COVID-19 public health measures. Beyond Canada, her expertise has been integral to combating global crises, including MERS in Saudi Arabia and Ebola in West Africa.

As a prolific researcher with over 600 academic papers and the principal investigator of the Toronto Invasive Bacterial Diseases Network, her work has directly informed policy on antimicrobial resistance and pandemic preparedness. A recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada, Dr. McGeer’s groundbreaking research and unwavering public service have left a lasting impact on global health.
We are honoured to acknowledge the generous donors whose gifts in 2025 make a difference to our students and school. We are grateful for your continued support. We also thank those who choose to remain anonymous. Donors are listed as of December 31, 2025.
