TAKE ACTION: Start Engaging with Your Community

Inside this edition, you’ll meet some of our local movers and shakers who are using their power and compassion to launch new initiatives and make Uxbridge – and beyond – a better place. Co-founders of 100 Women Who Care Uxbridge, Andrea Scowcroft, Janice Fitger, and Mimi Brown have spearheaded their immensely inspiring organization and have raised around $70,000 for local charities in 6 quarterly meetings. Not only did these ladies encourage like-minded women to start 100 Women Who Care groups in other north Durham townships, but they have unleashed the spirit of giving and caring to two groups of men in Uxbridge and Scugog who have subsequently launched 100 Men Who Care. The passion was contagious, prompting students and teachers at Uxbridge Public School to form 100 Kids Who Care, a group whose members donate their time, rather than money. Their actions have inspired other schools to start their own chapters. Uxbridge is expanding its scope even further. By September of this year, people from near and far will be able to tune-in to 105.5FM Uxbridge Radio. An interview with Frank Torres unveils the details.

MEET THE UXBRIDGE & AREA NETWORKING What is the Uxbridge & Area Networking Group? We’re small and home-based business owners who meet monthly, building our network of business connections. There are no passwords, no secret handshakes, no quota for referrals or “homework” to be done. We’re a friendly, welcoming business group getting together to help each other to be successful. We exist to: • Share ideas, expertise and experiences • Make introductions to others in the community • Provide cost-effective ways to promote members’ businesses Who are our members? We are business owners and operators, as well as local representatives of larger organizations, like financial services and real estate companies. Our members include individuals in networking marketing organizations, sales professionals, business service providers and companies who provide consumer services. Most members are from the Uxbridge area, but we have members travelling regularly to our meetings from other communities too. When are the meetings? We meet once a month (other than July and August), either for breakfast or lunch (see Page 2 for meeting details). How do I get involved? Join us for your first introductory meeting!

UXBRIDGE FM: TUNE IN! By Hollay Ghadery, River Street Writing

riverstreetwriting@hotmail.com www.riverstreetwriting.com

DESIGN WITH BITE. DESIGN. PRINT. SIGNS.

The first time I met Frank Torres – co-owner of SkyWords Media and the man behind Uxbridge Radio – I was struggling out my winter jacket while trying to soothe my fussing baby, who I’d had to bring along to the meeting due to a scheduling debacle. I was feeling sheepishly unprofessional. I was also about to visibly break a sweat when Frank offered to hold my daughter. While I got organized, Frank – a father of four himself - charmed my daughter into good humour. This was my first impression of Frank, and as we talked more, it was an impression that held true. Frank sees a need, and then he addresses it with tact, compassion and insight.

Enter Uxbridge Radio. After years of practically countless setbacks, 105.5 FM Uxbridge Radio starts testing this June. Programming is set to begin September 1st. The aim of the station, as Frank explained it, is to build Uxbridge a legacy – and since the station is not owned by a conglomerate, it will enjoy the freedom of independence. This freedom will allow the station to stay true to our community. Uxbridge FM will be locally staffed and its programming will feature local news, weather, traffic, sports and music, as well as popular music and national news. Uxbridge Radio also presents an unprecedented opportunity for local businesses. “We asked businesses in town if they advertise on radio,” Frank said. “None of them did.” While the station itself will be located on Owen Road, its 1,200 watt tower will stand just outside town, emitting a signal with serious scope - scope that will draw people to Uxbridge businesses and events. Meeting almost over, baby dozing, it occurs to me to ask Torontobased Frank how he came to know Uxbridge. “I’ve been visiting friends here for years,” he explained. “Uxbridge is a little gem.” His love for our town is palpable in his vision for Uxbridge Radio, which doesn’t exist to change what we have, but to celebrate it.
