FROM THE COACH certainly a different atmosphere to what we had experienced in 2020. We knew we were in opposition territory. Their set up, their crowd, and the atmosphere created was electric. We knew we were on the reigning premiers’ turf and people were ready to see netball back live on the big stage. We knew that we had to hit the ground running and set the standard that was going to impose a presence and pressure on our opposition and to the girls credit, they did this. This week’s preparation has been no different. We have reviewed, we have targeted our areas for growth, and we have studied our opposition.

The one addition to this week is that we are finally back on our home court. We are going to be playing the Fever way in front of our Green Army, our partners, our family and friends. It feels like it has been forever and we know how special it will be to have Suncorp Super Netball back in Perth. The game is going to be a battle, the challenge great but with the support of our community and the uncompromising focus that we will take to the court we know we are capable. Each training, each game we are committed to being a better team than the prior performance.

Fever’s win was the first over the Vixens in Melbourne since 2010, made even more impressive following a week interrupted by a COVID-19 lockdown in Perth.
Verity Charles reached a new level in her performance last year and as a result was selected into the Australian Diamonds squad. Last week she delivered 33 feeds and 18 assists directing the play through the mid-court at Centre and then Wing Attack. Maddy Proud had similar returns for the Swifts with 32 feeds and 19 assists against the Firebirds, demonstrating how important both players will be to their team’s fortunes in this contest.
West Coast Fever and the NSW Swifts are both coming off strong opening round wins, with the Fever defeating Melbourne Vixens by 14 goals in the grand final replay last Saturday and Swifts recording a thrilling three-goal win over the Firebirds in extra time.
Coach Stacey Marinkovich paid tribute to her players for their ability to remain focussed on the task against a strong opposition and demonstrating they’d taken steps forward since last season. Reigning MVP Jhaniele Fowler spearheaded Fever’s win with 55 goals, while Swifts Goal Shooter Sam Wallace scored 49 as her side held off the Firebirds in the first instalment of extra time since it was introduced this season to settle drawn matches.

Jhaniele Fowler v Sarah Klau Jamaican star Jhaniele Fowler continues to demonstrate why she has won three consecutive Suncorp Super Netball Player of the Year Awards with her stature and presence in the circle. Last week, she shot 55 goals at 92 per cent and is likely to receive extra attention from Sarah Klau and the Swifts defenders. Klau continues to show she can threaten any attacking circle with quick footwork and contest on the ball. The challenge between Jhaniele and Sarah will be one to watch.
Courtney Bruce v Sam Wallace Courtney Bruce set the standard early last week with a deflection on the Vixens’ opening centre pass, helping to set up Jhaniele Fowler’s first of 13 goals in the opening quarter. She will be instrumental in shutting down the Swifts’ Trinidad and Tobago international Sam Wallace, who shot a perfect game to lead her side to victory over the Firebirds in Round 1 and top the Nissan Net Points rankings.

Mum drove me 10 hours down and 10 hours home to get to netball training. Something I’ll forever be grateful for.

From participant to Assistant Program Coordinator Former Shooting Stars participant, Sophie Gumpoltsberger, has joined the team as the Derby Assistant Program Coordinator, as Shooting Stars continues to provide career opportunities for young Aboriginal girls in remote communities. A participant of the pilot program in Halls Creek in 2015, Sophie attributes Shooting Stars to the person she is today. “Shooting Stars supported me to make my own decisions both in and out of school,” said Gumpoltsberger. “They were a big part of my schooling success, encouraging me to come to school and shout out to Helen Ockerby, she was really there for me throughout my last year of school.”
“I feel very honoured to have this opportunity to help empower the young Aboriginal girls of Derby.” Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz said the organisation is all about passion. Our staff are passionate about the participants and the program and what it can achieve.
Having been a participant, Sophie is eager to give back to the community and offer the support and guidance she received during her schooling, to the next generation of young Aboriginal girls.
“There is nothing more powerful than a former participant who has experienced the positive impact of our program wanting to be part of the organisation to extend that impact to up-and-coming girls in their communities,” said Haintz.
“I know the struggles and challenges that Aboriginal girls in remote areas go through which gives me a deeper understanding of how best to support our participants,” said Gumpoltsberger.
“It has been a pleasure seeing Sophie grow and develop within school as a participant to now as she embraces opportunities on her post-school journey. Derby is very lucky to have her.”
