FROM THE COACH to improve our performance each week and keep us striving towards a higher level of execution which is consistent over four quarters. We thrive on being able to take on the best. Giants sit on top of the table and are undefeated. We want to see where we are at and there is no better way to do that than in front of our green army on our home court at RAC arena. We are working hard on our start to games and we look forward to the support of our home crowd. This week is also National Indigenous round, which provides a great opportunity to honour and acknowledge the history, culture and contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have made to our community.
Stacey Marinkovich Head Coach WEST COAST FEVER It goes without saying, but each week you face a new opposition team that have vastly different skill sets, different strategies and play to different strengths. For the first four rounds we have been in a different environment and three out of the four have been on the home courts of others. The competition in which we play has highlighted that on any given day, any team can challenge with a standard of play that forces you to absorb, adapt and attack the ebbs and flows of a game. Sustaining standards, finding consistency, and having the tools, players and variations to win games of netball is critical. Whilst it is only early in the season and we recognise there is still much to achieve within our game, we are very excited with the brand of netball we are delivering under what has been a challenging start on the road. Our team has met and recognised that our preparation, our growth mindset and our openness to review our performance honestly, combined with our work rate in the training environment is enabling us
We at Netball WA are extremely proud of the relationships we have developed and created in this space and take great pride in our partnership with our official charity partners, Shooting Stars, and the work they do to empower many wonderful young aboriginal girls and women. I have had first-hand experience working with Shooting Stars participants and have seen the growth in these young women holistically. We look forward to welcoming those attending the Shooting Stars Leadership Camp in Perth this week to RAC Arena as special guests for Indigenous Round and hope that everyone enjoys the experience.

MATCH PREVIEW
KEY MATCH UPS Jess Anstiss v Jamie-Lee Price
THE SITUATION
West Coast Fever and the Giants remain the only unbeaten teams after the first four rounds of the 2021 Suncorp Super Netball season. Fever have defeated the other top four teams from 2020 but have been challenged on each occasion, fighting back from early deficits to secure impressive wins. Last week, they recovered from a slow start to the Thunderbirds in Adelaide and have been taking steps throughout the week to ensure they are ready to go from the outset against the ladder-leading Giants. Jess Anstiss, who made the Round 4 Nissan Net Points Team of the Week with 16 assists from 25 feeds after moving from Wing Defence to Centre, said she was looking forward to the contest. “We are both undefeated coming into this game, so I think everyone is talking about it a fair bit,” she said. “It will be a good match up to see where we are at. “There’s no area of the court that we can just focus on and try to beat because they have great players throughout the whole court.”
Anstiss made the Nissan Net Points Team of the Week after moving from Wing Defence to Centre last week and exerting her physical presence on the game. If she appears at Centre against the Giants, she is likely to come up against Jamie-Lee Price, who is another one of the competition’s most physical midcourters.
Courtney Bruce v Sophie Dwyer The defensive pressure applied by Courtney Bruce with nine gains, four rebounds and an intercept saw her make the Nissan Net Points Team of the Round last week. She continues to lead the competition in intercepts with a total of 11 and will play a key role in containing Dwyer’s influence, especially from long range, where she has scored 12 super-shots this season at 60 percent.
Jhaniele Fowler v Sam Poolman Fowler broke 100 Nissan Net Points for the second week in a row with a total of 109.5 from 54 goals and five rebounds against the Adelaide Thunderbirds last week. She continues to lead the competition in scoring with a total of 224 goals from four appearances. Giants Goal Keeper Sam Poolman has notched up 6 intercepts, 11 rebounds and 13 deflections so far this season and will be focussed on continuing her form against Fowler.

Five participants set to graduate Narrogin Senior High School Five original Shooting Stars participants are set to graduate Narrogin Senior High School this year as the Narrogin site reaches its fourth year in operation. Jayeisha, Jemma, Che Leigh, Nicole and Aaliyah have been with Shooting Stars since the program piloted in Narrogin in 2018. Shooting Stars Regional Manager, Latoya Bolton-Black said seeing the success of the individual participants is a very empowering and rewarding experience. “When Shooting Stars first started in Narrogin, I was the Program Coordinator, so built a strong relationship with the now Year 12 participants,” said Bolton-Black. “Empowering our participants to stay in school is one of the core outcomes of the program, and even more important is the individual journeys’ our participants have experienced along the way.”
“Over the years these participants have faced challenges, celebrated achievements and through it all have become great role models for their fellow peers and within community.” “Through Shooting Stars, I was privileged to mentor these young ladies through their education journey and am very proud of our Year 12 participants on this important milestone.” Bolton-Black said she is privileged and proud to be part of an organisation that affects genuine change. “I am privileged to work alongside a group of strong, resilient, passionate women who are motivated and driven to drive change in the communities we work in and with each and every participant we work with.”

Less than 30% of young Aboriginal women have completed Year 12, compared with 60% of other Australian women. Shooting Stars is changing this.

FEVER FEATURE NATIONAL INDIGENOUS ROUND HAS A SPECIAL PLACE WITH FEVER West Coast Fever will honour the history, culture and spiritual practices of First Peoples Nations across Australia at the Round 5 National Indigenous Round game against the ladder-leading GIANTS. As one of the first clubs in the league to host an Indigenous Round game in 2014, this event is extremely important to West Coast Fever and has become one of the club’s flagship events. An important feature of the round is the West Coast Fever Indigenous Dress. This year’s dress is designed by Noongar artists, Peter Farmer and Kylie Graham, and features seven circular symbols representing the seven players on the court gathering or coming together and the unpredictable path water weaves throughout the landscape. There are also 90-degree angles that symbolise the sections of the netball court and the sometimes sharp turns that life takes each individual on in their journey, while there are also symbols of Aboriginal culture that represent the female. Indigenous Round also provides an opportunity to showcase Fever’s engagement with its Official Charity Partner, Shooting Stars, which is an educational program that uses sport and other tools to empower young Aboriginal girls and women in remote Western Australia to make informed choices about their education and employment journey.
West Coast Fever has a close relationship with Shooting Stars, with Courtney Bruce, Verity Charles and Jhaniele Fowler all being Ambassadors of the program. In the lead up to the game, West Coast Fever athletes and Shooting Stars participants come together for an official dress blessing ceremony, led by respected Noongar Elder and Noongar language specialist, Aunty Roma Winmar. Eight West Coast Fever players will also step out on court for Indigenous Round with Aboriginal artwork on their game day shoes, painted by the Narrogin Shooting Stars participants. Fever Captain and Shooting Stars Ambassador, Courtney Bruce will wear shoes painted by Aaliyah Ugle, a Year 12 Shooting Stars participant. Special guests will hear from the inspiring Shooting Stars participants and staff around the impact of the Shooting Stars program on WA’s Aboriginal communities at the pre-game function. On court, the game will be played using a special ball designed by YortaYorta/Wurundjeri woman, Simone Thomson, while Fever Alley will feature a community canvas project, led by Whadjuk Noongar artist Julianne Wade, for the Green Army to get involved in celebrating the First Nations people and cultures.
