CELEBRATING STACEY’S 100TH GAME AS FEVER COACH Tonight, Stacey Marinkovich celebrates her 100th game as West Coast Fever Coach in a journey with the club that has come full circle. Over the past two decades, Stacey has been involved as a player, captain and coach, leading West Coast Fever to two Grand Finals in the most successful period in club history. Her outstanding leadership saw her appointed last year as Origin Australian Diamonds head coach, which will see her depart Fever at the end of the season to take up the national role full-time. This will conclude an incredible contribution to netball in Western Australia, including eight seasons as a Perth Orioles and West Coast Fever player, three of those as captain, and a coaching career that has spanned almost a decade.
After playing her 100th national level game in 2008, Stacey announced her retirement at the end of 2009. She began her elite coaching career in 2012 as an assistant coach at West Coast Fever and head coach of Western Sting in the Australian Netball League.
She was appointed head coach of Fever for the 2015 season and guided the club to third place in the Australian Conference, before leading them to grand final appearances in 2018 and 2020. Alongside this impressive list of achievements, Stacey has also become mum to 18-month-old son Matthew, who is a favourite among the Fever playing group and has further strengthened the family culture at the club. It is fitting that Stacey returns to her original home state for this coaching milestone, to lead Fever in front of family and friends in this match up against the Queensland Firebirds, which was coincidentally the opponent in Stacey’s first game as Fever coach and the team that she made her debut for as a player 21 years ago.

MATCH PREVIEW
THE SITUATION
West Coast Fever will play Queensland Firebirds in their second game since arriving in Brisbane last week to complete the remainder of the Suncorp Super Netball season. The fixture is technically a ‘home game’ for the Fever on the Firebirds home court, however after winning by 10 goals at the same venue in Round 7, Fever will approach the game with plenty of confidence. With Fever currently in fourth place on the ladder and one win ahead of the Firebirds, they will be aiming to create some breathing space and close the gap on the top three. Firebirds will enter the contest fresh from a 10-goal win over Sunshine Coast Lightning just over a week ago, however, will be missing vice-captain Tara Hinchliffe who has been ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing her ACL at training. The Firebirds will also be without Goal Attack Tippah Dwan, who is undergoing 14 days of home quarantine after being linked to a Coronavirus exposure site.
KEY MATCH UPS Courtney Bruce v Romelda Aiken Fever captain Courtney Bruce has been a barometer for the West Coast Fever this season, leading by example with dashing intercepts, deflect opposition feeds and set up Fever’s drive from the defensive end of the court. She is leading the competition in deflections (73), intercepts (40) and defensive rebounds (21) and has played a key role in Fever’s ability to shut down the opposition attack. She will be preparing to match up against Firebirds’ shooter Romelda Aiken, who is expected to start this week despite injuring her ankle in the final minutes of last Monday night’s win over the Sunshine Coast Lighting.
Sunday Aryang v Gretel Bueta Rising star Sunday Aryang has excited Super Netball fans this season with her impressive defensive efforts, speed and agility. She has recorded 36 deflections, 17 intercepts and 10 rebounds after forming a potent defensive combination with captain Courtney Bruce. She lined up on Firebirds Goal Attack Gretel Bueta in Round 7 and recorded five gains and two intercepts while restricting her opponent to 14 goals. As one of the most exciting scorers in the competition, Bueta will be focussed on exerting her influence on this contest, setting a great challenge for the emerging Aryang in what will be an important match-up for both teams.
Alice Teague-Neeld v Kim Jenner Teague-Neeld was named as West Coast Fever’s player of the match in their 14-point win over the Melbourne Vixens last week with five goals and 20 assists from 23 feeds. Her creative play-making and defensive pressure at the attacking end of the court will again be important for Fever. Firebirds Goal Defence Kim Jenner will be aiming to limit Teague-Neeld’s influence in this contest and will look to use her speed to add to her 15 intercepts and 53 deflections for the season.

Chrishae and Dakoda end the term on a high Narrogin Shooting Stars participants Chrishae and Dakoda have ended the term on a high, both receiving Follow the Dream End of Term Awards.
“I am very proud of myself and thankful to Shooting Stars for the constant support and motivation to come to school and follow the dream.”
The Awards are given to Follow the Dream participants to recognise their excellence in a certain area.
Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz said participant achievements are at the core of the program’s success.
Year 7 Shooting Stars participant Chrishae said she felt proud to be recognised for her hard work this term, receiving the Most Improved Award.
“A big congratulations to these girls on their dedication to their studies this term,” said Haintz.
“I feel very happy and proud of myself,” said Chrishae. “Shooting Stars has helped me on this journey as they keep me motivated and drop me home after the Follow the Dream program.” Year 10 Shooting Stars participant, Dakoda, was also delighted to receive her Highest Achiever Award. “Just being recognised for my achievements and all my hard work this term is really nice,” said Dakoda.
“This is a perfect example of service providers collaboratively working together for the benefit of the community. It’s great to see Shooting Stars and Follow the Dream working together to achieve a common goal.” Follow the Dream is an initiative of the Polly Farmer Foundation that runs alongside Shooting Stars in many of our sites to help empower Aboriginal girls and women in regional communities.

Less than 30% of young Aboriginal women have completed Year 12, compared with 60% of other Australian women. Shooting Stars is changing this.
