FROM THE COACH Netball Season going by relocating to hubs in other States. We know what is required from both a physical and mental perspective after spending last season in the Queensland hub and are now preparing for another extended stint away from our family and friends when we relocate to South Australia next week for what is expected to be the remainder of the 2021 season. While we are all in a privileged position to be involved with the game that we love for a living, the past two seasons have been very challenging for the athletes, coaches, staff, umpires and officials across the league who have continued to make personal sacrifices for the greater good of the competition.

Thank You Green Army As we approach what is unfortunately expected to be our last home game in Perth this season and my last at RAC Arena as West Coast Fever coach, I’d like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me and the club not only this season, but throughout my entire journey. Nothing compares to playing in front of the Green Army on our home court and while it is very disappointing that I’ll be unlikely to experience this again after this weekend, I am extremely proud of the commitment and resilience our club has shown to keep the Suncorp Super
We also understand the significant impact that the disrupted season has on our members, fans and sponsors and sincerely thank each and every one of you for sticking by our club during these challenging times. Your ongoing support ensures that we can continue rising to the challenge and showing our grit to give our best possible performance every time we step onto the court. I will certainly savour the opportunity to coach such an inspiring group of athletes in this home game against the Adelaide Thunderbirds and for the remainder of the season in South Australia, before embarking on my next chapter as full-time Australian Diamonds coach. But for now, we have a job to do, Fever is the focus, and we leave no stone unturned in our drive for success. Thanks again for everything Green Army. It has been an absolute pleasure.

THE SITUATION
West Coast Fever and the Adelaide Thunderbirds meet in this match-up as part of a revised Round 11 fixture resulting from the relocation of four SSN teams to South Australia this week due to the evolving COVID-19 situation across Australia. Fever have encouraged as many fans to attend the game as possible for what is expected to be the last home fixture for the season and coach Stacey Marinkovich’s last game in front of the Green Army before she departs at the end of the season to become full-time Australian Diamonds Coach. Fever and Thunderbirds are both scheduled to join the other SSN teams in South Australia next week to play home and away matches for the remainder of the season.
Verity Charles and Hannah Petty have both been key links for their respective teams this season, with Charles recording 24 goal assists from 37 feeds last weekend and Petty notching up 20 from 31. With her strong full court defence, Petty will be focussed on restricting the influence of Charles and her ability to feed Goal Shooter Jhaniele Fowler. Charles is currently fourth in the league for assists with a total of 175, even with Fever still having a game in hand.
Jhaniele Fowler v Shamera Sterling Jamaican internationals Jhaniele Fowler and Shamera Sterling will resume their Suncorp Super Netball rivalry in what promises to be another entertaining contest at RAC Arena. Fowler remains the competition’s leading Goal Shooter with 492 goals, while Sterling tops the SSN list for deflections, intercepts, and defensive rebounds with her athletic approach to containing opposition shooters.
Courtney Bruce v Lenize Potgieter Potgieter continues to be the Thunderbirds main avenue to goal and leads the scoring for her side this season with 310 goals. She also keeps the Thunderbirds in the contest with offensive rebounds, collecting 26 to date to sit inside the top four in this stats category. With a game in hand, Fever captain Courtney Bruce is currently second to Shamera Sterling for deflections, intercepts, and defensive rebounds, demonstrating the impact she has had at the defensive end. Her ability to shut down Potgieter will be important in this contest

Shooting Stars empowers its people and communities Since its inception, Shooting Stars has supported over ten of its young employees in completing traineeships alongside working for Shooting Stars. Narrogin Program Assistant, Taya Olman, who successfully completed her Certificate III in Sport and Recreation last year, said she enjoyed the challenge of combining work and study. “I love working for Shooting Stars,” said Olman. “Not only do I get to guide and motivate our young Aboriginal girls into their futures, but Shooting Stars also provides me with opportunities to develop my skills for my own future.” Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz said our people are our biggest asset. “Providing development opportunities for our young staff through traineeships is extremely important. It not only empowers our staff, but also their communities,” said Haintz.
“By empowering and supporting our people we ensure our programs operate to their full potential.” Over the next five years, Shooting Stars aims for a minimum of 50% of its staff to have undertaken professional development and leadership opportunities annually, most recently signing up two of its new employees in Port Hedland to complete their traineeships with the support or Shooting Stars.

Celebrating the next generation of netballers at Suncorp NetSetGO Week An entire week dedicated to celebrating everything Suncorp NetSetGO got under way on Monday, July 12 and concludes today with the NetSetGO West Coast Fever Match Day against the Queensland Firebirds. Suncorp NetSetGO is Netball Australia’s official starter netball program. It is a fun and safe introduction to netball and is the best way for girls and boys aged 5 to 10 to have fun with their friends, keep active and learn the basic skills of netball in a safe and social environment. The event is hosted by Netball WA in the second week of the July School Holidays every year and was pioneered right here by Netball WA. This event is now an event adopted nationally by most states. The week is dedicated to putting the program in the spotlight and highlighting everything that is great and rewarding about being a part of the Suncorp NetSetGO community. From clinics at associations, to the Fun Day, to addresses from Suncorp NetSetGO 2021 ambassador and West Coast Fever athlete Sasha Glasgow, it’s definitely a fun and exciting week!
