FROM THE COACH everyone has had to adapt in one way or another. The underlying truth, the thing that aligns our sport and netball communities is that we all want the season to go ahead. We all also know how precious it is to have a home game. 2020 was a massive year on the road and the start of 2021 for us has been not much different. So to be home playing our third home game in the last 25 is something we are not taking for granted.
Stacey Marinkovich Head Coach WEST COAST FEVER Sport is an amazing industry to work in. It brings great joy, excitement, frustration, energy, disappointment, stress and exhilaration. The level of passion displayed and protective behaviours that surface for one’s club, players, team, staff and code are extraordinary. We invest into our vision and we take people on our journey. That is why sport is so great. It engages people, unites people, brings out the competitive spirit and challenges us all to be the very best we can be. COVID has challenged the existence of our season, we have had games changed, teams in isolation, teams on restrictions and teams relocated. Every club has their story to tell and
I am incredibly proud of how our girls have embraced the challenges that have been laid before them. Not once have they taken a backward step. Last week was a tough battle on the court. Swifts played to the standard that we know and expected and we were below ours. This is the best competition in the world and any team on any given day have their opportunity for success. The consistency in which you execute your game plan and play the game on your terms is what will determine the result. We understand where our gaps were last week and what we need to rectify if we are to outperform the Lightning this week. Both teams have come off losses. Both teams have distinctive brands of play that will create some incredible battles. We have our vision, we have trained hard, and we know that we are capable of. We can’t wait to transfer our hard work into the performance environment in front of our green army. There is definitely no place like home and we want to thank you all for your loyalty, your support, and your passion for our club.

MATCH PREVIEW
KEY MATCH UPS Courtney Bruce v Cara Koenen
THE SITUATION
West Coast Fever will be looking to rebound from their first loss of the season last weekend; a one-goal defeat to the NSW Swifts in a thrilling finish at John Cain Arena, which saw Fever fight their way back from a nine-goal deficit at three-quarter time to almost snatch the win. They will be aiming to carry this momentum into Saturday’s home game against Lightning, who were also narrowly defeated in Round 9 by three goals at the hands of Melbourne Vixens. Despite the loss, Lightning sit in second position on the ladder and are only trailing top side Swifts by percentage. Last time Fever and Lightning met was Round 3 on the Sunshine Coast, where Fever Captain Courtney Bruce was inspirational in defence with five intercepts and seven gains, helping her side record a convincing 15-goal win after trailing early in the contest. Lightning players Cara Koenen and Mahalia Cassidy will be celebrating their 50-game milestones in this game.
Courtney Bruce’s ability to shut down Lightning Goal Shooter Cara Koenen in their Round 3 encounter was key to Fever’s success. Koenen scored 15 goals in the first quarter as the Lightning built a nine-goal lead before Bruce stepped up and restricted her influence to just 13 more goals for the remainder of the game. Bruce has continued her form in defence for the Fever since then, recording 27 intercepts and 58 deflections in eight games. Koenen will be looking to increase her output and add to the 317 goals she has scored at 90 per cent accuracy so far this season.
Jess Anstiss v Laura Scherian It’s likely that wherever West Coast Fever’s Jess Anstiss and Sunshine Coast Lightning’s Laura Scherian start for their respective teams on Saturday night, the two will match up at some point of the contest. Fever coach Stacey Marinkovich’s has turned to Anstiss to be her starting Centre in recent weeks and with the strong defensive approach that she brings from her more frequently played position at Wing Defence, she has certainly helped to control the play through the mid-court by shutting down her opponents with a strong physical presence. She will be looking to restrict the Lightning’s experienced campaigner Laura Scherian, who has also lined up at Centre in her side’s last few outings, but also frequently plays at Wing Attack. The versatility of both players to move through the mid-court will make them important contributors to their teams in this contest.
Jess Anstiss closes in on Laura Scherian PREVIOUS MEETINGS • Rd 3, 2021: Fever def Lightning, 69-54 • Prelim. Final, 2020: Fever def Lightning, 73-59 • • Rd 11, 2020: Fever def Lightning, 72-52 •

Shooting Stars participants receive scholarships to St Hilda’s Six former Shooting Stars participants from Carnarvon and Leonora have received scholarships to one of Perth’s leading private schools, St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls. Alyssa, Keliah, Nirvana, Amber, Chloe and Corteaha commenced at St Hilda’s in Term One of this year where they will board and study for the remainder of their education. Shooting Stars Executive Officer, Fran Haintz said this was a great achievement for the former participants and a testament to the program. “To see the girls, grow from when they first joined the Shooting Stars program to now having the confidence to take life changing opportunities like this, is so powerful,” said Haintz. “I am so proud of the leaders these girls have become and excited to see what their futures have in store for them.” Shooting Stars invited the former participants to West Coast Fever’s Indigenous Round match, where Shooting Stars was the official Match Day Partner.
“To see the girls, reunite with Shooting Stars staff and their former peers, was very special, seeing that genuine connection.” “Whilst the girls are no longer participants of the program, they will always remain part of the Shooting Stars sisterhood, and that’s the Shooting Stars way.” Shooting Stars is proud to be St Hilda’s chosen charity to support for 2021, with the students doing a range of fundraising initiatives to help empower Aboriginal girls and women in remote communities.

Current West Coast Fever Assistant Coach Belinda Reynolds will lead the Sting as Head Coach, and West Coast Fever Talent Coach Tracey Swami has been appointed as Assistant Coach.
The new-look ANC, which replaces the Australian Netball League, aims to bring together Australia’s emerging netball talent, including athletes, coaches, umpires and officials, for talent identification and development looking toward Suncorp Super Netball and international levels.
Elite coach Reynolds, who was the Western Sting Assistant when they won the 2017 title, also represented and captained WA as a player at numerous national championships and played 174 WA Netball League (WANL) Open games.
The 2021 Sting squad includes emerging Fever defender Olivia Lewis and extended squad members Sloan Burton, Shannon Eagland, Courtney Kruta and Donnell Wallam. 2020 Fever player Ingrid Colyer, who is progressing well with her return from a knee injury, has also been named in the squad. The younger sister of West Coast Fever’s Sunday Aryang, Ruth, is also featured after being named captain of this year’s 17U team. Aryang, Burton and Lewis are among 10 WA Institute of Sport Athletes named in the Sting squad alongside Chelsea Bartlett, Cleo Kenny, Olivia Putt, Brooke Repacholi, Ella Sigley, Ella Taylor and Giselle Taylor.
Her coaching record includes West Coast Fever Assistant Coach and WA Institute of Sport (WAIS) Head Coach, East Freo Sharks Open Head Coach, and WA 17&U, 19&U and 21&U Assistant Coach between 2013 and 2016.
