FROM THE COACH I am confident we’ve got the ability, mindset and game plan to do that. I would also like to make special mention of Emma Cosh and Bridey Condren, who made their West Coast Fever debuts in Round 1 and Round 3, respectively, as well as Sunday Aryang, who earned her first start in West Coast Fever colours in Round 3. It’s fantastic to see young stars coming through the ranks. Emma and Sunday are both proud products of the Netball WA Athlete Pathway, and have relished the opportunity on court in Suncorp Super Netball.
Stacey Marinkovich Head Coach WEST COAST FEVER Today we line up for our fourth game of netball in 10 days, which has been something all Suncorp Super Netball clubs have had to prepare for, and there’s no doubt it’s challenged everyone’s programs in different ways. From preparation, analysis, scouting, and recovery, hub life has been demanding. That being said, we’re still very proud to be able to get a full competition up and running in 2020, and know that our Members, fans, partners and broader West Australian netball community also share our sentiments. It’s been fantastic to get all 12 of our players on the court in the first four rounds of play, and what has been even more pleasing, has been our ability to showcase the Fever brand of netball. The challenge for us now is delivering that consistently for 60 minutes, and

FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR Back in Perth, the Club has been working tirelessly to secure several home fixtures at RAC Arena later this season. This process has included developing new processes and procedures to cater for the potential of games within the current Phase 4 State restrictions in WA and has included working with WA Police, RAC Arena and several venues to host travelling teams. Whilst securing games in WA remains an ongoing process, we want to assure you that we’ve thrown everything on the table to bring games back to WA and to inspire and make our members proud. Our whole club can’t wait until once again, we’re experiencing the excitement, passion and the sea of green that is unique to games at RAC Arena with you, our Fever Family.

I have been with the team in the Queensland hub for close to a month and I will remain with the team throughout their time on the east coast. By being based in Queensland, I am able to support the team as much as possible, ensuring they are comfortable in their new training, playing and living environments, and away from family and friends. I have been blown away by the positivity from the playing group and support staff here in Queensland. The players had to show all their grit and resilience on Saturday as we overcame a close battle with Magpies to win by one goal. With two wins on the board and a busy week of fixtures ahead, the group is determined to continue this winning form.

West Coast Fever are up against top of the ladder Melbourne Vixens for Round 5. Melbourne Vixens went down to the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Round 4, 47-54 and West Coast Fever took home their second win for the season against Collingwood Magpies, 63-62. Coming off the back of a win, Fever will have a newfound confidence going into this match, however Vixens will be eager to shut this down desperate to retain their top of the ladder position.
KEY MATCH UPS Courtney Bruce v Caitlin Thwaites Bruce is back in full force this round and will add a huge presence in the defensive end of Fever’s line up. Thwaites brings experience and calmness to her side, shooting at 81.8% in Round 4.
Jess Anstiss v Liz Watson One of the strongest WD’s in the league, Anstiss keeps her opponent on their toes with her constant hunger for ball. Watson brings speed and agility to her side and currently sits at the top of the ladder for goal assists across the league. It will be crucial for Anstiss to slow her from reaching the circle edge to minimise impact.
Jhaniele Fowler v Emily Mannix Fowler continues to cement herself as the best shooter in the league with 217 goals for the season. She has proved she can shoot both under the post and at long range with a number of Suncorp Super Shots under her belt. Vixens have a strong defensive team with Mannix partnering up with either Weston or Eddy and putting up a solid and consistent defence. PREVIOUS MEETINGS

While majority of Australians were not happy about the COVID-19 lockdowns and the delay of elite sport in this country, Alice Teague-Neeld saw this time as an opportunity to hone her skills ready for the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball season. The extended pre-season and returning to West Coast Fever for a second year had helped the 24 year old prepare mentally for the upcoming season. “When you are the new kid, it’s not as comfortable to start with, and everyone was so welcoming, but I think that feeling of being new into an environment, it was my first time out of home and away from family and I’m quite close with my family, so definitely matured and adapting to everything. “I really wanted to get back to enjoying netball and stop worrying about all the extra things and all the outside noise.” The goal attack has been working hard behind the scenes improving her shooting accuracy, spending hours on the court with coaching guru, Lyn Pemberton. “There’s two-parts, the tactical aspect of your shot, and that means a lot of repetition just to get that embedded into you, and that’s what I’ve been doing with Lyn. COVID lockdown also meant the players had to train by themselves, which proved beneficial for the physiotherapist student. “It was a little bit of a break from that environment because it can become quite intense and you can get consumed in it and I think last year I struggled a little bit to have something away from netball.” Teague-Neeld said. Despite Fever remaining with the same squad as 2019, Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich says the team’s playing style is formidably different with TeagueNeeld and leading goal scorer Jhaniele Fowler becoming a dominant combination in the attacking circle. “Alice has really stepped up and has really owned the goal attack position, she is certainly shooting well, taking her opportunities with the long shots as well as scoring close to the post.” Marinkovich said. “When you have a world-class shooter, the best shooter in the world, as a target back in GS, part of our game plan is to obviously use Jae and she is the best shooter in the world and I think we need to utilise that and adapting and working to everyone’s strengths.” Teague-Neeld said. This season Teague-Neeld’s hard work has paid off, she was awarded player of the match for her Round 1 efforts against the Adelaide Thunderbirds. In that game she scored 10 goals including four super shots at 100 per cent accuracy. From there she has continued to earn her place in the starting seven, improving her shooting accuracy and score tally. “I think it is really great in the team we have, to have that healthy competition between the people around you that play your position, it’s only going to make us better. Having started the last few games has been really great and it just gives you the opportunity to run out and give it all I have.” She said. “Our team has great depth and I’m just enjoying myself at the moment, I know what I’m capable of and I’m just enjoying the time I have out on court.”

Shooting Stars launches holistic wellbeing program Shooting Stars has launched its Seven Sisters program which provides Aboriginal girls and women with opportunities to develop positive social and emotional wellbeing skills and preventative mental health strategies.
“Through our Yarning Circles, our organisation was able to recognise that bullying was a recurring theme as a barrier for school attendance across our sites and that our participants struggled with regulating their emotions,” said Whitau.
The ten-week program uses netball as a space to teach participants emotional regulation strategies. Participants will learn how to recognise and name their emotions, develop strategies for cheering themselves up or calming down and learn how to build healthy relationships, both on and off the court.
“The Seven Sisters program was developed to equip our participants with the skills to respond and adapt to emerging challenges as they progress through the life course.”
The program has been developed in line with Aboriginal concepts of health, which applies a holistic model of connection to seven different spheres of life: culture, land, physical self, mental self, community, family/kinship and ancestors/spirituality. The program is being piloted with 16 participants in Narrogin across the two primary schools and run by three Noongar women, Seven Sisters Coordinator Jade McGuire, Narrogin Program Assistant Taya Olman and Narrogin Trainee Latia Kickett. Shooting Stars Research Manager, Rose Whitau said it is great to see this project come to fruition.
“The program incorporates seven characters who personify a connection to each of the seven spheres. Whilst participants will affiliate with at least one character, the program works to ensure they develop strategies to connect with every aspect on the sphere wheel.” “We are so grateful to the two primary schools in Narrogin for enabling us to launch the pilot program.” Shooting Stars plans to implement the Seven Sisters program to all primary school Shooting Stars sites in 2021, with the hope to launch an adapted version for Shooting Stars high school participants the following year and then open the program up to regional Netball WA clubs.
