FROM THE COACH To our members, fans and partners thank you for supporting the Club throughout this season. Your messages of support have inspired us through this difficult time as we endeavour to continue to make you proud.
Stacey Marinkovich Head Coach WEST COAST FEVER Today marks the last game of the home and away season, which has been like no other. We are extremely proud to have made it through to the finals. Our time away from home, from our loved ones has been extremely difficult, but the way the players have dealt with the situation and turned it into a positive experience is a testament to our Club’s values of being united, professional, innovative and courageous. We are aware that everyone has a different driver or an inspiration to finish their season off, whether it is gaining momentum for the next season or to make sure that you finish on a positive note. We know Thunderbirds have grown so much since we played them in Round 1, and we are under no illusion that they will be an absolute force. We need to be playing at our very best and making sure we are executing our skills, holding individual accountability around that, but having great connection and cohesion on court.
For those attending RAC Arena tonight, I hope you have a great time. It’s phenomenal that whilst we haven’t been able to have a game in Perth that we can actually have the biggest crowd for the season. It shows the support we have back home, the love of the sport in WA and we are just incredibly proud that we get to step out knowing we have a stadium back home that is fully behind us. The support our members, fans and sponsors have been sending throughout this whole journey has been absolutely incredible. Go Fever!

THE SITUATION
West Coast Fever opened the season against the Adelaide Thunderbirds and will finish the home and away season playing against them. Fever’s back half of the season has seen the Perth side remain undefeated after seven rounds. Thunderbirds will be another challenge for Fever, they have nothing to lose and will look to throw everything at Fever. A win by Fever today could see them jump to second on the Suncorp Super Netball ladder.
KEY MATCH UPS Jhaniele Fowler v Shamera Sterling Jhaniele Fowler continues to entertain fans with her high scoring, she has currently scored 741 goals for the season, averaging 57 goals a game at 94%. Fowler and Sterling are no strangers, playing alongside each other at an international level for the Jamaican team, the Sunshine Girls. Sterling is currently leading the competition with defensive rebounds.
Jess Anstiss v Chelsea Pitman Cementing herself as one of the best wing defences in the league, Anstiss has a strong one-on-one defensive style. Last week Anstiss threw her body on the line to win the ball and this game will be no different for the tough-as-nails midcourter. Anstiss will be setting herself up for another tough battle against Pitman, who will play her last game for the Adelaide Thunderbirds.
Courtney Bruce v Lenize Potgieter Potgieter has been the Thunderbirds leading goal scorer this season and will be another challenge for star defender Courtney Bruce. Bruce has been in terrific form; she has currently made 33 intercepts and 27 defensive rebounds for the season. Both players have experience on the international stage with Potgieter (South Africa) and Bruce (Australia) playing in the 2019 Netball World Cup, adding a wealth of experience to both sides.

THE 13TH MAN ADDS SOMETHING SPECIAL TO THE FEVER TEAM
There has been one small addition to our West Coast Fever Club this season who has had quite an impact on the team. ‘He’, is pint-sized, entertaining, has a smile that not only lights up his face, but everyone around him. ‘He’ is our Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich’s son Mathew, who is nine months old and completed our Fever family while living away from home. Saturday’s game marks 59 days our team have been away from home. Understandably, everyone is missing home, their family and friends. However, the team are determined to make their time away count and make it as far as they can through the competition. “We want to make our fans proud and continue to put some more wins on the board and keep that winning momentum when we play finals,” Olivia Lewis said. The addition of the 13th man to this squad has been the shining light for these players. “Just seeing Stacey and Matthew interact it brings so much happiness and calmness to the group. We are a big
family here and Matthew is just a new addition to it,” Courtney Bruce said. “The Club has been hugely supportive of him being around the group and it’s actually been a really positive dynamic for the way in which we function as a team,” Marinkovich said. Matthew has given each player, coach and support staff the opportunity to let go, take a break, smile and laugh as everyone takes turns holding Matthew, or playing with Matthew, even babysitting Matthew. It’s not a chore, but a moment when players can enjoy life’s smallest and greatest moments. “It’s just so nice to have a little bubba around and it puts things in perspective a little bit, that netball isn’t everything and having a baby in the place just settles that. He’s also the cutest baby in the world,” Verity Charles said. “The other day we took him for swimming lessons at the pool in the hotel and you completely switch off from netball and you forget all of that. I was thinking to myself, ‘wow nan did this with me,’ she was a swimming
teacher and I’m playing around with Matthew, trying to teach him how to swim.” Whether it’s at training where the players are working extremely hard; that two-minute drinks break is usually spent on playing with Matthew or making “goo-goo gaa-gaa” noises, you would never usually see on a netball court. These elite athletes are enjoying their ‘big kid’ moments, where everyone acts a goose to entertain the toddler and everyone laughs, no judgement at all. And some may say Matthew has been the difference between living in Queensland and enjoying Queensland. “It just makes you relax, I feel like you can have a bad training session or a bad day and you just see him (Matthew) there giggling for absolutely no reason, it puts a smile on your face. It just makes you remember that netball isn’t everything, there are so many aspects to life and when someone’s smiling and giggling at you for doing absolutely nothing, it just brings so much joy,” Bruce said. You are probably thinking “why on earth would Stacey bring Matthew across the other side of the country for an undetermined amount of time and not only juggle coaching and motherhood, but also take on the Australian Diamonds coaching role”. “There was no end date as to when we were going home and as it turns out we it’ll be three months until I actually get back to Perth, which is a significantly long time with when Matthew is just so young,” Marinkovich said. “I would never put myself in that position to take on those opportunities if I didn’t have the support network already around me. My whole career I’ve had great family support, I work with an incredible club that understands that people have aspirations and want to keep driving their career.
“I’ve got a lot of people who love and care for me and my family and it’s enabled me to be able to live my dream in both worlds at the moment.” Stacey’s family are in Queensland and were yet to meet their grandson, nephew and cousin, but due to the Queensland hub they have seen more of Matthew than they ever could have imagined. “He’s obviously spent more time with his grandparents than he ever would have, and then his aunt and uncle and cousins, so he’s met his family a lot earlier and getting a lot more time with them throughout this trip and without their support it would have been really hard to juggle the two jobs I’ve got at the moment,” Marinkovich said. It is evident this little man is loved by the team, but he could also be the difference between these players missing home, not being able to turn off from netball and take a break, and being able to share the love and joy a baby brings. Fever are a family club and this just shows that when we as a Club are thrown curve balls, we as a Club respond by coming together and supporting one another. #GotGrit
Empowering Aboriginal girls & women Shooting Stars is an educational program that uses netball and other vehicles to drive its primary vision of increasing school attendance rates for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) girls living in remote communities and regional towns To find out more about Shooting Stars, including information and about making donations and corporate partnerships
Visit www.shootingstars.com.au
Shooting Stars allows local Aboriginal women to give back to their local communities Willamena Beaman, a Wongi / Yamitji woman has returned to her local community of Leonora to join the Shooting Stars team as a mature aged Trainee Assistant Coordinator. In her mid-thirties Willamena has worked across various sectors, community, local government and corporate, however, was drawn to the Shooting Stars position for the opportunity to move back to Leonora and give back to her local community. “I love the fact that I’m a role model for the girls of Leonora and someone relatable they can look up to,” said Beaman. “I see a lot of the girls in Leonora not attending school regularly, whether it’s due to personal issues or perhaps a lack of responsibility and I really want to support these girls and be that person that creates a safe space for them at school.”
Cultural and family responsibilities and obligations are important to many Aboriginal people with young people often being encouraged to leave Country to study or work and orbit back to the community when they can contribute and give back. Shooting Stars provides career pathways for Aboriginal women in their local communities, allowing Aboriginal women to lead and support the ongoing development towards thriving and sustainable communities. Willamena is the sixth trainee Shooting Stars has employed for 2020 across all eight sites and the organisation is excited to see these women grow and develop in their leadership journey.
