Brought to you by
FROM THE COACH the start of the season and whilst we continue to strive success the focus is clearly on our processes and our ability to stay connected. Our success has not just come from the players and coaching staff, but also our members, our fans and our partners, your support and well wishes has been truly inspiring and I thank you for the taking the time to send them through. Thanks for your support. Go Fever!
Stacey Marinkovich Head Coach WEST COAST FEVER The condensed season means our preparation has been very targeted with minimal training time, but recovery between games has been the primary focus. The players continue to drive their elite standards ensuring all players are available and able continue to grow our performance, despite the hectic playing schedule. We are acutely aware of the challenge that comes with playing the NSW Swifts. They are very efficient in attack and play a very effective possession style of game. While we have had some recent success, our focus is that that each time we step out on the court we need to be better than the previous performance. All teams in this competition have a great understanding of each other’s strengths, but it is being able to execute under the most intense pressure that will separate teams at the end of the day. We have shown considerable growth since

Jhaniele Fowler v Sarah Klau
Verity Charles v Maddy Proud Verity Charles is playing exceptional netball at the moment, both her attacking and defensive plays are being praised throughout the competition, but Charles continues to keep her head down and work hard against her opponents as well as directing the play through the mid-court. Charles is coming off the back of claiming the player of the match in Round 11. Maddy Proud leads her team in the feed count and is likely to be rotated with Paige Hadley.
She’s the competition’s best shooter and she had another impressive game against Sunshine Coast in Round 11. Despite receiving a lot of attention from the Sunshine Coast Defenders, Fowler managed to compose herself and find ways around the opposition’s tactics, along with the help of goal attack Alice Teague-Neeld, to hit the scoreboard. NSW Swifts’ and Australian Diamonds’ keeper Klau continues to show she can threaten any attacking circle with quick footwork and contest on the ball. The challenge between Jhaniele and Sarah will be one to watch.
MATCH PREVIEW
THE SITUATION
West Coast Fever remain undefeated after five rounds. They’re coming off a terrific win over Sunshine Coast Lightning on Tuesday night. Fever know they are in for a tough battle against second placed NSW Swifts as both teams look to secure there placings on the ladder. Swifts are coming off losses to Melbourne Vixens and Queensland Firebirds.
Stacey Francis v Helen Housby After a strong performance in Round 11, Stacey Francis and Courtney Bruce combined well to accumulate defensive pressure on Sunshine Coast Lightning. They will be looking to do the same against Swifts. It will require another full team defensive effort from the West Coast Fever if they are to impact the experienced and formidable Swifts attacking combination that boasts a line of internationals. Helen Housby is a recognised threat on the two-goal shot so that challenge for Stacey Francis will be to tag her to reduce her impact.

SUNDAY ARYANG LIGHTS UP FEVER’S DEFENCE Sunday Aryang is in her second season as a training partner with West Coast Fever and it is a season the 19-year-old will not forget. After debuting for the Perth side last year, in her only game for the season, Aryang has stepped up to the challenge of not only being away from her family for the first time, but also becoming a regular defensive pillar for Fever. “It’s been really good so far. Just coming here at first, I was kind of nervous and scared about it, but ever since I’ve been here it’s been really good, and the girls have really helped calm me,” Aryang said. “At first it was kind of difficult just because I’ve never been away for this long and now it’s getting easier as it goes.” Aryang has regularly taken to the court and substituted Stacey Francis in goal defence and has fitted in seamlessly alongside goal keeper and Captain Courtney Bruce. “That definitely boosted my confidence, it gives me that sense that Stacey does believe in me and she thinks that I’m able to do it,” Aryang said. The goal defender describes her game style as two-fold: “I’m able to stay on the body and contest first ball, but I’m also able to split off.” In Round 3 against the Giants, Aryang was listed in the starting seven for the first time in her career, then again in Round 6 against the Firebirds; to say it came as a surprise is an understatement. “It was a really good experience, I wasn’t expecting it, once I got out there, I felt so comfortable and it felt good.” The rewards are paying off for Fever and Aryang; after a long pre-season and some hard training, Aryang has been receiving praise from outside the club, but the goal defender is only focussed on what is happening inside the club. And there have been many benefits to spending the past seven weeks in a Queensland hub with the team. “My voice, just because I’m naturally just a quiet person and I’m not really good at speaking up and talking, but I guess just being here I’ve been a bit louder,” Aryang said. While it has been a long time away from home, playing mid-week games with little more than two to three day turnarounds, Aryang said the team is focussed on pushing hard for the rest of the season and having been undefeated for the past five rounds has helped keep spirits high. “Team morale is really good, I think everyone is in such a good headspace at the moment and we’re really trying to push to get into finals, that’s a good mindset to keep.” This year’s success continues for Aryang, on Thursday, she was named in the Australian 21/Under squad ahead of the 2021 Netball World Youth Cup. Last year Aryang was a member of the 19U Australian Squad as well as being a key member of the Western Sting.

Carnarvon Leaders grow leadership and awareness to country Leading Shooting Stars Carnarvon participants developed their leadership skills and awareness of country whilst connecting back to culture on a leadership camp held in Francois Peron National Park, Shark Bay, thanks to the WA Police Community Crime Prevention Fund. The Count Me In Culture Rewards Camp hosted by award winning Darren ‘Capes’ Capewell, a descendant of the land’s traditional owners and passionate tour guide of the Shark Bay region, was available to participants across both primary and secondary years who have maintained a school attendance record of 80% or more, alongside exemplary behaviour throughout the school year. The program aims to minimise street presence and potential anti-social behaviour by providing educational sessions on leadership, team-building and culturally enriching activities as well as life skills and personal development and decision making. The camp saw the girls take part in activities such as kayaking, looking at cultural sites in Monkey Mia, spending a day on a catamaran learning about the marine life, 4WD-ing along Cape Peron,
bushwalking and learning about indigenous flora and fauna and bush medicine whilst camping each night under the stars engaging in storytelling. Shooting Stars Executive Officer, Fran Haintz said the camp was a great opportunity to reward our participants for all their hard work whilst reconnecting with culture and country. “By building our participants’ skills today in leadership, teamwork, communication, cultural and environmental awareness and respect we are shaping our leaders to be successful now and into the future,” said Haintz. “A big thank you to the WA Police for supporting the program and Darren ‘Capes’ Capewell for delivering the camp with passion and infectious enthusiasm, making this an experience our girls will remember forever.”
