Stacey Marinkovich Head Coach WEST COAST FEVER The hub scenario we’re currently in has thrown a lot of challenges and new opportunities for us as a Club. Rarely, do you have such a short space of time between facing a side for the first time in the season and then stepping back out on court again to do battle for the second time. It’s been only two games since we played the Magpies back in Round 4, a match which saw us walk away with a one-goal victory. While the weekend’s game against the Firebirds was disappointing, we had to quickly review and learn from that match, before putting it out of our minds to focus on today’s game against the Magpies. Shooting Stars provides pathways beyond school Shooting Stars has welcomed more trainees to the team this month as it continues to provide career pathways for young Aboriginal girls beyond school. Year 12 student, DJ Calwyn, based in Halls Creek is set to commence a one-day a week on the job training role with support provided by Shooting Stars. Shooting Stars has been key to DJ’s journey, a participant for five years, as she attributes her goal setting skills and growth in confidence to the program and its’ amazing staff. DJ has her eyes set on university upon graduating high school. Also, a current year 12 student, Latisha Ranger will commence work with Shooting Stars for one-day a week at the Carnarvon site. Latisha has been a participant in the program since 2016 and states that the support provided has kept her at school.
The organisation also welcomes Waylene Merry, a program graduate from 2019, to the Mullewa team, three days a week, as she works towards completing her Certificate III in Sport and Recreation. Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz congratulated the girls on this achievement. “Shooting Stars empowers young Aboriginal girls and women by providing a foundation for success,” said Haintz. “Whilst Shooting Stars is a school educational engagement program, we also look to provide pathways for our participants beyond high school and into the workforce.” “I congratulate these girls on this achievement and their invaluable support and knowledge they will bring in enhancing the delivery of our program.”

West Coast Fever are set to step out in Round 7, against the Collingwood Magpies, wearing the highly anticipated Fan Dress designed by Fever Fan, Chloe Turnbull and selected by the online Fever community earlier this year. Chloe’s original design won the hearts of Fever Fans with its display of iconic Western Australian flora and fauna, featuring the Black Swan and Kangaroo Paw Plant on the rear of the dress. On Tuesday, players will take to the court in one of the most eye-catching dresses in the league, with a rainbow of colours incorporated into the designs front our Fever players will be easy to spot at Nissan Arena. Designer and aspiring netballer, Chloe Turnbull explained how she came up with the winning design. “I chose the Swan and Kangaroo Paw because I thought it was a good way to capture WA. I thought the flowers would brighten up the dress and give it a happy, coastal vibe.” said Turnbull. Also explaining that the design took the teen a few days, completing it during COVID-19 isolation earlier this year. The addition of the words ‘Stronger Together’ in the design, now more relevant than ever, resonated with the Fever Family as we remain united with our fans and members during what has proven to be a challenging season for the national league. Reiterating the sentiment that our fans and members are just as important as the 12 athletes in green to the Club’s success. Chloe has expressed her excitement to watch the Fever players in her design, which is to be showcased on August 25 in the QLD Hub, against Victorian team the Collingwood Magpies. “The thought of the players wearing the dress is pretty amazing. I hope the West Coast Fever players like the design and enjoy wearing it as much as I enjoyed creating it.”
Although a goal shooter of 8-years, the 13-year-old’s favourite West Coast Fever player is Fever Captain and Australian Diamonds defender, Courtney Bruce. Proud to be a role model for the next generation of netballers coming through the pathway, Bruce is thrilled to be wearing Chloe’s design and had some words of encouragement for the young shooter. “The whole team is excited to step out in Chloe’s unique design on Tuesday, we wish that she could be in the crowd to watch but know she will be cheering us on at home.” Said Bruce. “I hope that having us wear her design and receiving one of her own will help to inspire her through her netball journey for years to come. She holds a special place in the Fever Family now and who knows, maybe we will be seeing ‘Turnbull’ across the back of more Fever dresses in the future.” Check out Chloe’s dress live in action against the Collingwood Magpies, this Tuesday 25 August by tuning into Telstra TV or on the Netball Live App.

Both teams are coming off losses from Round 6, West Coast Fever were defeated by Firebirds 12 goals, while Magpies went down to NSW Swifts by two goals. Both teams will be hungry for a win as the last time Fever won it was in Round 4 against the Magpies. Magpies haven’t had a win since Round 3 against Firebirds. Fever have just dropped out of the top 4, while Magpies have fallen to the bottom of the ladder.

Courtney Bruce v Shimona Nelson Last time the two teams clashed, Courtney Bruce missed the match with a back injury and Shimona Nelson scored 47 goals for the game with one super shot. This time Bruce is back and in her previous games she has been profound in defence, she put on a strong performance on Saturday against Firebirds goal shooter Romelda Aiken and will be looking to disrupt Nelson’s play.
Two exciting players this season, Jess Anstiss has copped her fair share of knocks, but continues to be a pillar of strength throughout the mid-court. Magpies’ Kelsey Browne has had plenty of court time working her opponents, she is currently sitting fourth for centre pass receives and Anstiss will be focused on slowing tally down.

Sunday Aryang v Gabrielle Sinclair Sunday Aryang has had a great start to the season and will have another tough task of containing Gabrielle Sinclair, who in Round 4 scored 15 goals including three super shots for the magpies. Aryang put on a great defensive performance on Saturday against the Firebirds where she finished with six deflections and will be looking to apply the same pressure against the Magpies.
