FROM THE COACH Her message around the design of the ball resonates with our club: “I want every female who holds this ball to identify with it, to feel empowered, to feel the spirit of the oldest living culture on earth on their shoulders and to rise like a warrior.” Whilst the team has had recent success, there is a strong focus that remains around our processes as we continue to drive our performance and ensure we are improving every time we step out as a group.
Stacey Marinkovich Head Coach WEST COAST FEVER Indigenous Round is very special to our Club. We take a lot of pride in being the first Club to have worn an Indigenous designed dress in the competition. It is wonderful to see the Suncorp Super Netball League and all the clubs embracing Indigenous culture with an official Indigenous Round each season, where all clubs wear an Indigenous themed dress. Our Club has a close connection with the WA Indigenous community through our charity partner, Shooting Stars and we have a lot of respect for the meaning of this round. Traditionally we would take part in an official dress blessing ceremony with Shooting Stars participants at the Gold Netball Centre, however due to us being living in a Queensland hub, we wanted to continue our tradition and held our own dress blessing led by Aunty Roma via telephone call. To continue the celebration of Indigenous Round the competition’s match ball contains Indigenous artwork designed by Wurundjeri/Yorta Yorta woman Simone Thomson.
The Giants are a formidable line-up with international talent across the court. They have the capacity to score big in their 2-point play, so it is going to require a complete 60-minute performance if we are going to get the desired result. The competition has now started to stretch out with one game a week, which we are relishing the opportunity to recover the body and mind and also embrace the additional time to train and further analyse our performance. Courtney Bruce has caused plenty of disruption for opposing teams trying to deliver the ball to their goal shooters. The Captain continues to lead by example and will come up against Jo Harten for the first time this season. Despite missing the first three rounds of the season Bruce sits in the Top 3 for intercepts and Top 5 for defensive rebounds and deflections. Harten has enjoyed the rewards of the two-goal super shot, leading this season’s stats with 63, which the Fever will want to try and limit this game.
Last week Jhaniele Fowler broke her previous record of most goals scored (66) after finishing with 70 goals against NSW Swifts. Fowler is averaging 56.5 goals a game with an accuracy of 94% and continues to dominate Fever’s attack. Fowler’s court coverage and ability pluck the ball from the air puts real pressure on the opposition’s defence.

THE SITUATION
West Coast Fever remain undefeated after six rounds, however last time Fever played the Giants in Round 3 they lost. Plenty has changed for both sides in the last 10 rounds. This week’s game will see the clubs play on neutral ground as they head north to battle it out at Cairns Pop Up Arena for the first time. Both clubs are coming off wins with the Fever showing a gritty performance against the NSW Swifts in Round 12. The Giants also had a strong win against the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Round 12.
Stacey Francis v Kiera Austin Stacey Francis and Courtney Bruce are arguably one of the best defensive combinations in the League and they continue to set the benchmark each week. Francis will be wanting to get on the front foot early as Giants have been sharing the scoreboard pressure around amongst Harten, Austin and Bassett.

2020 INDIGENOUS DRESS UNVEILED West Coast Fever will step out onto the court wearing its 2020 Indigenous Dress in celebration of the Suncorp Super Netball Indigenous Round this weekend. The dress has been designed by Noongar artists, Peter Farmer and Kylie Graham and features seven circular symbols representing the seven players on court gathering or coming together and the unpredictable path water weaves throughout the landscape. There are also 90-degree angles that symbolise the sections of the netball court and the sometimes-sharp turns that life takes each individual on in their journey, while there are symbols of Aboriginal culture that represent the female. West Coast Fever athlete and Shooting Stars Ambassador, Verity Charles said she is honoured to wear the dress with her 12 teammates. “I love it! Absolutely love it,” said Charles. “This is probably my favourite dress and it’s an awesome opportunity for us to be able to represent such a beautiful culture, the oldest culture going around in the world.” West Coast Fever has a strong connection with the WA Indigenous community through its official charity partner, Shooting Stars which is an educational program that uses sport and other vehicles to empower young Aboriginal girls and women living in remote communities and regional towns in Western Australia. “It’s pretty amazing, I’m pretty lucky with my role with Shooting Stars. I get to go up north nearly every year and build relationships with the girls, sharing with them the importance of education as well as eating well and being healthy and active,” said Charles. “It’s my favourite part of the year! I love seeing the girls grow and I love being out on country and learning from them and growing with them.” Traditionally the Club would take part in an official dress blessing ceremony with Shooting Stars participants at the Gold Netball Centre. Although slightly different this year, Fever kept with tradition and held their own dress blessing in the Queensland Hub, led by respected Noongar Elder and Noongar language specialist, Aunty Roma Winmar via telephone call. West Coast Fever was one of the first clubs in the league to host an Indigenous Round featuring its own Indigenous Dress which prompted Suncorp Super Netball to adopt a league-wide Indigenous Round. West Coast Fever helps to reinforce Shooting Stars’ mission Shooting Stars’ Official Charity Partner, West Coast Fever initially launched its Shooting Stars Round six years ago to celebrate Aboriginal culture and highlight the effectiveness of our program in affecting real change on real lives. This initiative prompted Suncorp Super Netball to implement a league-wide Indigenous Round with all eight clubs now taking part in celebrating Aboriginal culture. By using sport and other initiatives, Shooting Stars drives greater engagement and attendance at school of young Aboriginal girls living in WA’s remote communities and regional towns. Shooting Stars Executive Officer Fran Haintz said the positive influence of the West Coast Fever players helps to reinforce the programs mission – to help more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls stay engaged in school and work towards successful post school pathways. “We have a number of West Coast Fever players do site visits each year,” said Haintz. “The Fever players are wonderful role models in the community, and they inspire our girls to be leaders in their communities and advocates for a healthy lifestyle.”
West Coast Fever Captain and Shooting Stars Ambassador, Courtney Bruce said she is honoured to be part of such a great program. “I have seen first-hand the positive impact this program is having by empowering young girls to reach their full potential,” said Bruce. “It’s so rewarding that I get the opportunity to help develop these girl’s leadership skills and promote overall positive health and wellbeing.” “Seeing them go from low school attendance or poor behaviour to where they are now as a direct result of the Shooting Stars program is amazing.” Shooting Stars works with just under 400 Aboriginal girls across eight delivery sites in Western Australia, and our participants have an average school attendance improvement of a day a week across the program.
