FROM THE COACH I have been pleased with the brand of netball we are playing, falling to the Vixens on Tuesday night was disappointing, but the challenge for us now is to consistently put on a strong performance across the full 60-minute match and we have our sights set firmly on the Queensland Firebirds.

Stacey Marinkovich Head Coach WEST COAST FEVER It has been another big week here in the Queensland hub, and today’s game is a celebration of milestones. Firstly, as a Club, we will celebrate 50 Suncorp Super Netball matches. These 50 games are another chapter in our storied history, and include some fantastic highlights, including playing and winning a final and of course, hosting the 2018 Grand Final. We will also celebrate Jess Anstiss’ 50th match this weekend, as she has played in every one of those matches. Jess’ rise to becoming one of the competition’s premier midcourter has been something I have been incredibly pleased to witness. She is a product of the Netball WA Athlete Pathway, a proud West Australian and a wonderful ambassador for the sport, and I congratulate her on her achievement.

The Vixens game was also our first home game away from home. It was fantastic to be able to walk out with our music and hype, onto a court filled with our Got Grit branding and our partner signage. We are truly grateful for the support of our corporate partners. We are again hosting a watch party at Yagan Square today, and I encourage you all to support this event. I would like to thank everyone who has supported the team throughout our time away with messages of support and encouragement. It has been humbling to know the West Australian community is right behind us, and we are working hard to bring netball to RAC Arena this year. Thank you again for your ongoing support of our Club

West Coast Fever are up against Queensland Firebirds, who are yet to win a game in 2020, despite a number of solid performances this year. The Firebirds went down to the NSW Swifts in Round 5, 57-64. West Coast Fever also lost their Round 5 game against top-of-the-table Melbourne Vixens 59-68. Fever have two wins on the board and will be looking to add another against the Firebirds.

Courtney Bruce v Romelda Aiken Courtney Bruce will line up for her third consecutive game this season against one of the League’s most prominent shooters in Romelda Aiken. She had a huge presence on court against the Magpies in Round 3, with her experience helped halt a rampaging Magpies outfit. She has another big challenge with Romelda Aiken who sitting second on the goal scorer’s leader board with 184 goals.

Jhaniele Fowler continues to cement herself as the best shooter in the league with 265 goals for the season. Fowler is shooting at 93 per cent accuracy and is averaging more than 50 goals a game. Firebirds will be sure to switch between Rudi Ellis and Tara Hinchliffe in a bid to minimise Fowler’s impact on the scoreboard.

Attempting to slow Colyer down will be Firebirds Captain, Gabi Simpson who is considered one of the best defensive mid-court players in the world.

She’s the triple threat from the Kalamunda & Disticts Netball Association, and while she hasn’t donned the Wing Attack bib for some time, there’s no doubting Jess Anstiss’ ability to cover all three midcourt positions. The young gun has made a quick ascension to the ranks of Suncorp Super Netball since debuting in Round 1, 2017. This weekend Anstiss will celebrate her 50th match, coincidentally in what will be West Coast Fever’s 50th game in Suncorp Super Netball. Anstiss said it was an honour to reach the milestone. “I’m very proud to play 50 games in this competition, and it’s even more special to have played all 50 of those games for West Coast Fever,” she said. “It’s certainly been a journey in my three years in Suncorp Super Netball, and I have enjoyed every moment.” “I’m very fortunate to pull on the green dress each week, and it’s something I certainly don’t take for granted.” The 23-year-old shot to fame in 2017, after locking down the Wing Defence bib in her opening year. After entering the match in the third quarter of Fever’s Round 1 clash against the Thunderbirds, Anstiss never looked back, playing in every match that season, en route to winning the Club’s Most Valuable Player award. “I look back on my debut season with a lot of fond memories,” she said. “I didn’t have a lot of expectation of getting on court in 2017, but I’m very proud of the way I attacked that season, and to be rewarded with the MVP Award was something I will always cherish.” In three short years in the competition, Anstiss has added to her list of accolades. In 2018, she was named the winner of the Rebel Young Star Award, as well as being named in the Team of the Year at Wing Defence. “2018 was a massive year for the Club,” she said. “It was certainly nice to get those accolades, but playing in a Grand Final at RAC Arena is something I will never forget.” “Walking out into the Arena was such a special moment for our Club, and the support we received in the lead up and following was incredible.” Anstiss is a proud product of the Netball WA Athlete Pathway, having plied her trade in the Gold Industry Group WA Netball League for Rangers, while also representing the State on multiple occasions, before earning a contract with Fever at the commencement of Suncorp Super Netball.

Shooting Stars Turns 5 Shooting Stars celebrates its fifth birthday this month by reflecting on the organisation’s progress and key achievements since its inception in 2015. 1. Establishing Glass Jar Australia and setting the strategic plan In 2015 the first strategic plan was drafted for Shooting Stars and the first meeting for the Glass Jar Australia Board was held in June 2016. Today the Board features a number of highly regarded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, sitting at 66% representation. Empowering Aboriginal women is at the core of Shooting Stars, which is echoed through our organisation structure with it not only being driven on the ground by Aboriginal women but guided by Aboriginal leaders on the board. 2. 85% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment and growth of the team A key outcome in the strategic plan developed for 2016 – 2021 was to maintain the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce across all programs to greater than 50%. Within the first 12 months Shooting Stars surpassed this outcome and currently sits at 85%. The organisation was able to achieve this

and continues to maintain it through the development of employment pathways for its participants through traineeships. Empowering young girls and women is the foundation of Shooting Stars and giving local Aboriginal women the opportunity to grow professionally in their own communities is integral to Shooting Stars. 3. Establishing the Shooting Stars program across eight sites Five years ago, Shooting Stars launched its original pilot site in Halls Creek and within 12 months the organisation had established five sites across Western Australia. From there, Shooting Stars effectively established an additional site per year, bringing us to eight sites across the state. Shooting Star’s success sits both with its positive results in its participants’ school attendance and its partnership between the local schools and communities of its sites. Community collaboration is key for Shooting Stars with each site having a local steering committee, consisting of key players and local leaders, to ensure each program is localised and best combats the barriers specific to that area.

4. Shooting Stars research arm established In 2016, Shooting Stars launched its ‘Yarning with the Stars Project’ which provides evidence from both participants and community around issues specific to that site, as well as the effectiveness of the Shooting Stars program in overcoming those issues. Yarning circles have since become the corner stone of our strategy development. Through yarning we have been able to identify certain barriers for our participants and create programs such as the Seven Sisters and Leadership Camps to help our participants develop skills in needed areas. Yarning circles help keep the program accountable to the community, ensuring it is site specific and that moving forward the organisation is achieving its goals through evidence-based research. 5. Funding Diversification The Shooting Stars program initially launched with just one funding source. As the program developed and the positive impacts became evident, the organisation was able to successfully secure over 30 partners and associate partners. Empowering Aboriginal girls and women and improving the lives of each of our participants is the lifeblood

of Shooting Stars. In achieving this, a number of companies have given their support demonstrating the program’s success and allowing Shooting Stars to extend its impact to more participants. Shooting Stars Executive Officer, Fran Haintz said it has been a pleasure to head up Shooting Stars since its inception. “Shooting Stars has achieved so much in such a short amount of time and I think that’s a testament to the importance of the work we do.” said Haintz. “An organisation is only as strong as its people and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our site staff, board members, office staff, partners and associate partners over the last five years who have helped Shooting Stars to empower Aboriginal young girls and women.” “It’s been an incredible five years watching Shooting Stars’ journey and I am excited for what the next five years have in store for us. As our Research Manager Dr Rose Whitau always says, ‘there’s nothing stronger in the world than an educated woman with love in her heart!”
