It is my pleasure to welcome all participants, officials, umpires, volunteers and spectators to the 2022 Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships on behalf of the Netball WA Board and Executive. This annual event is a highlight for Netball WA, with more than 3500 players, coaches and umpires participating across three days at the Gold Netball Centre and Perth Netball Association. With teams travelling from as far as Karratha, Wongan Hills, Southern Cross, Ongerup and many regional communities in between, I am looking forward to seeing the diversity of talent on display across the 39 divisions. This event is a great opportunity for the netball community to come together and enjoy a fantastic long weekend and I am looking forward to seeing rising stars in action over the three days and the memories that will be created both on and off the court. Importantly, this event is also an important part of Netball WA’s talent identification, umpire testing and coach mentoring programs to ensure we can continue developing and enhancing the game at every level. I am also excited to again watch the 11 teams competing in the No Limits Division, which is a wonderful competition for athletes with an intellectual disability.
I would also like to acknowledge our Principal Partner the Gold Industry Group, as well as Healthway promoting the Fuel to Go and Play message, the Insurance Commission of WA, the University of Western Australia and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. We sincerely appreciate your support. Thanks must also go to the staff and volunteers responsible for the planning and coordination of this event from Netball WA, the Town of Cambridge and Perth Netball Association. Volunteers are critical to organising the Association Championships and netball competitions across our State and I thank everyone who has contributed their time again this season. This year, 2022 Netball WA Service to Sport Awards will be presented at the Opening Ceremony to recognise three of the many great volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution to netball in WA. I look forward to congratulating each of them on receiving this honour at the event. 2022 FUEL TO GO & PLAY ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIPS The 2022 Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships, which is the largest community netball event in Western Australia, will be held in Perth this long weekend with more than 3200 players travelling from across the State to participate. The Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships form part of the Netball WA competition pathway and are held annually to provide a representative opportunity for Associations’ players, coaches, officials, managers and administrators. This year over 3500 players, coaches and umpires from 41 Associations across Western Australia will participate in 39 divisions catering for 274 teams from 12U through to Masters at the Gold Netball Centre and Perth Netball Association in Jolimont on June 4, 5 & 6. This will include four teams in a Men’s division and 11 teams in a No Limits division for players with an intellectual disability. The event will commence with an opening ceremony at 8AM on Saturday, June 4 and conclude with hub presentations and a closing ceremony at 11AM and 3PM on Monday, June 6. MAJOR PARTNERS
Seven Sisters Through yarning with Shooting Stars participants from 2016-2018, some common barriers to school attendance emerged at multiple sites. After some discussion, the Seven Sisters program was developed to address these barriers. The Seven Sisters program will provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and women with opportunities to develop positive social and emotional wellbeing skills and preventative mental health strategies, which will enable them to respond and adapt to emerging challenges as they process through the life course. It has been developed to align with an Aboriginal health framework. There are two versions of the Seven Sisters program, one for primary school (years 5&6) and one for junior high school (years 7 to 9)
that look to address different needs through the age groups. Over the 10-week program, participants will learn how to recognise and name their emotions, develop strategies for emotional self-regulation and learn how to build and maintain healthy relationships in a variety of contexts. At the end of the 10 weeks, the program finishes with a community wide event that encompasses all aspects from the sessions into a full day of interaction and skill development on the netball court. It also looks to engage local health services to interact with the girls and the wider community. The aim is to reduce the stigma behind accessing services and to create a safe space for participants and families that may need assistance from health services. OUTCOMES
