NO LIMITS COMPETITION BACK FOR 2020 The 2020 No Limits competition is set to take place at the Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships at the Wembley Sports Park this Sunday.

Southern Districts Development Officer and No Limits Coordinator, Bev Gallager said it means the world for the No Limits players to be able to play netball at a competitive level.

Arguably the highlight of the three-day tournament, the No Limits competition provides an opportunity for people with intellectual disabilities to participate in a competitive environment that promotes social inclusion and participation.

“We do a lot of training leading up to the Championships and all they want to do is get out on the court and play netball and it’s great for them to have the opportunity to play against different teams,” said Gallagher.

Established in 2015 with just four teams competing, the 2020 edition will see seven teams compete from four Associations across the day.

“Here at Southern Districts, we’re a big family! All of our Association representatives train alongside one another, including the No Limits players which gives a real sense of belonging for everybody.”

2019 saw the Red Devils from Southern Districts Netball Association take out a landslide victory over Wanneroo Districts Netball Association with a 12-goal win.

“We’ve been submitting teams for the No Limits Division since 2016, and to see how much these players have developed is incredible. We’ve had players join who are virtually non-verbal and to see their

confidence grow to the point where they are now communicating on and off the court is fantastic.”

imperative that everyone has the opportunity to participate in and share the love of our great sport.”

“It helps develop the players’ coordination, it builds camaraderie and ultimately brings out the players’ personality.” Netball WA General Manager of Community Netball, Liz Booth said netball is all about inclusivity. “The Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships has become one of Netball WA’s flagship events and it’s brilliant to see this competition continue to build in the inclusion space,” said Booth. “Our sport is capable of achieving so much and in order to achieve our purpose of Advancing Netball and Advancing Communities it’s

Empowering Aboriginal girls & women Shooting Stars is an educational program that uses netball and other vehicles to drive its primary vision of increasing school attendance rates for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) girls living in remote communities and regional towns To find out more about Shooting Stars, including information and about making donations and corporate partnerships

Visit www.shootingstars.com.au

Shooting Stars allows local Aboriginal women to give back to their local communities Willamena Beaman, a Wongi / Yamitji woman has returned to her local community of Leonora to join the Shooting Stars team as a mature aged Trainee Assistant Coordinator. In her mid-thirties Willamena has worked across various sectors, community, local government and corporate, however, was drawn to the Shooting Stars position for the opportunity to move back to Leonora and give back to her local community. “I love the fact that I’m a role model for the girls of Leonora and someone relatable they can look up to,” said Beaman. “I see a lot of the girls in Leonora not attending school regularly, whether it’s due to personal issues or perhaps a lack of responsibility and I really want to support these girls and be that person that creates a safe space for them at school.”

Cultural and family responsibilities and obligations are important to many Aboriginal people with young people often being encouraged to leave Country to study or work and orbit back to the community when they can contribute and give back. Shooting Stars provides career pathways for Aboriginal women in their local communities, allowing Aboriginal women to lead and support the ongoing development towards thriving and sustainable communities. Willamena is the sixth trainee Shooting Stars has employed for 2020 across all eight sites and the organisation is excited to see these women grow and develop in their leadership journey.

Healthier Netballers

Choosing healthy food and drinks helps us perform at our best. During sport, a combination of carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats and fluid is needed to stay fuelled and hydrated. The best sources of carbohydrates includes grains, wholegrain cereals and breads, legumes, fruit, vegetables and dairy products. Lean protein sources include meat, seafood, eggs, dairy and alternatives (e.g. soy milk), meat alternatives, legumes, nuts and seeds. Healthy sources of fats include reduced fat dairy such as milk and yoghurt, nuts, avocado and oily fish such as salmon and tuna.
