This season has had its share of ups and downs for our Club and today we face our biggest on-court challenge against the NSW Swifts in the minor semi final. A win will see us move into the preliminary final and continue our journey in the Queensland hub. Our Club has become so much more than a group of players who play netball each week, we are family and along with you, the fans, members and partners we have become one big extended family. Your messages of support throughout this entire season has been extraordinary and inspiring. Our partner signage on court for our home-awayfrom-home games in Brisbane have provided the team with a sense of playing on a ‘home court’ and today is no different as we host the Minor Semi final.

FROM THE COACH This knockout semi final brings another challenge, but also a great opportunity for our team to deliver our Brand under the greatest of pressures and expectation. We face this opportunity united and aligned. The Swifts have an incredible amount of experience and are very efficient in attack and play a very effective possession style of game. They are relentless in their defence and bring a level of physicality that makes you aware they mean business. We know that each time we step out on court we need to be better than the previous performance.

KEY MATCH UPS Jhaniele Fowler v Sarah Klau Fowler is the competition’s best shooter and this week she achieves an incredible milestone, playing her 100th League game. She is a professional, she is determined and her performance has been on the highest level. Her stature and presence within the circle is likely to receive extra attention from Sarah Klau and the Swifts defenders. Klau continues to show she can threaten any attacking circle with quick footwork and contest on the ball. The challenge between Jhaniele and Sarah will be one to watch.
Verity Charles v Maddy Proud Verity Charles has reached a new level in her performance this year and as a result has been selected into the Diamonds squad. Charles’ attacking and defensive plays have been praised throughout the competition, but Charles continues to keep her head down and work
hard against her opponents as well as directing the play through the mid-court. The battle will be on as Verity could face multiple opponents with swifts likely to rotate Maddy Proud and Paige Hadley through their line-up.
Courtney Bruce v Sam Wallace Bruce will be looking to rebound from last week’s loss to the Adelaide Thunderbirds. Despite the one-goal loss, Bruce was solid in defence with nine deflections, six rebounds, 11 gains and three intercepts. Bruce and goal defender Stacey Francis will need to combine early if they are to impact the experience of the formidable Swifts attacking combination that boasts a line of internationals. Helen Housby was ruled out of last week’s game but is a recognised threat on the two-goal shot, which will challenge Stacey Francis to maintain a tag and reduce her impact. PREVIOUS MEETINGS

This is the knock-out round of the semi finals. West Coast Fever have notched some great wins on the board, but finals brings another round of challenges. In the last round of the season West Coast Fever lost to Adelaide Thunderbirds by one goal, 63-64, while NSW Swifts drew with Giants 77-all. This season both the clubs have had a win against each other, both ends of the court will be under plenty of pressure throughout the game. Goal Shooter Jhaniele Fowler will celebrate her 100th game, she is once again the League’s leading goal scorer with 795 goals at 94% accuracy.

Shooting Stars allows local Aboriginal women to give back to their local communities Willamena Beaman, a Wongi / Yamitji woman has returned to her local community of Leonora to join the Shooting Stars team as a mature aged Trainee Assistant Coordinator. In her mid-thirties Willamena has worked across various sectors, community, local government and corporate, however, was drawn to the Shooting Stars position for the opportunity to move back to Leonora and give back to her local community. “I love the fact that I’m a role model for the girls of Leonora and someone relatable they can look up to,” said Beaman. “I see a lot of the girls in Leonora not attending school regularly, whether it’s due to personal issues or perhaps a lack of responsibility and I really want to support these girls and be that person that creates a safe space for them at school.”
Cultural and family responsibilities and obligations are important to many Aboriginal people with young people often being encouraged to leave Country to study or work and orbit back to the community when they can contribute and give back. Shooting Stars provides career pathways for Aboriginal women in their local communities, allowing Aboriginal women to lead and support the ongoing development towards thriving and sustainable communities. Willamena is the sixth trainee Shooting Stars has employed for 2020 across all eight sites and the organisation is excited to see these women grow and develop in their leadership journey.
