Dear Newcomer, Welcome to Nerina! This is your first year at university, your first year in the adult world (sort of) and your first year of independance. It may seem
daunting
and
you
might
be
frightened
of
a
few
challenges that lie ahead but take heart - you are not alone! The most wonderful thing of living in a space such as Nerina Residence is the feeling of sisterhood that accompanies you through all the trials and tribulations - we do life together.
My hope is that BRUTUS will be a guiding light to help you through every term and season of your first year and that you will find comfort in the stories of those who are all too familiar with the struggles you are facing now.
My wish for you in your first year: May your coffees be flavoured with the laughter of your friends, may your smiles linger on in your dreams, may your feet tread paths you thought were impossible to reach, may your heart grow soft and warm with love, may your successes inspire others to grow and believe and may your roots be planted firmly for your bloom to unfold.

MUST-HAVES: A plastic bucket/container to carry your dishes to the sink - dropping and breaking them all isn't fun :) A drying rack is useful, since the dryers can be a bit temperamental.
CARE TIPS: Make friends with the cleaning staff - you never know when their readiness to help could be useful.
OTHER TIPS: Book your week's meals in advance, otherwise forgetting is real.

If possible, it helps to buy a textbook between two people and then to share it. Get yourself a "study buddy" to motivate you and keep you accountable.
SOCIAL TIPS: Don't be afraid to walk to the showers in only your towel - everyone does it! Be open to meeting and talking to many different people in the first few months - your best friends might come along a little bit later ;)

ACADEMIC TIPS:
A plastic container that can get wet to carry your toiletries to the shower. A warm night gown for the Stellenbreezy winters!
ROOMIE TIPS: If you and your roommate both make your own food, try and do it together. It works out much cheaper and it makes for some special roomie bonding time.
CARE TIPS: Put out an hour or so per week for "me-time" - not for admin or work but for pure relaxation and rechaging. You'll need it!
SOCIAL TIPS: Don't eat alone - use this time to socialise and catch up with your friends.
SOME RANDOM TIPS: THERE IS A BATHROOM ON EACH FLOOR OF THE LIBRARY! IF YOU ARE PRONE TO OVERSLEEP, GET A TRUSTED FRIEND TO WAKE YOU UP ON TEST DAYS! PRESS THE KNOB OF THE DRYER IN THE WASHING ROOM IN BEFORE TURNING IT - THEY AREN'T BROKEN DESPITE POPULAR BELIEF. YOU CAN SCAN, PRINT AND COPY (WITH YOUR STUDENT CARD) AT THE "MATIES COPY SHOP" IN THE NEELSIE.
